Overview

This advanced course is designed for qualified Plastic Surgeons who want to develop their medical knowledge, clinical competence and patient skills within the Cosmetic and Aesthetic fields. Our accredited course will develop the clinical knowledge and skills you’ll need to practice safe, efficacious ethical surgery. By the time you graduate you’ll have a thorough grasp of the key surgical techniques and the ability to apply them appropriately, in line with clinical needs, ethical considerations and patients’ wishes. The course will also train you to critically evaluate emerging research and to incorporate it into your practice, and to lead clinical, technical and service developments.

Our course combines a significant practice component with research studies and a major dissertation. You’ll be assessed on the below elements by:
1) 2 vivas examining the case studies presented and reports you submit from the course’s practice component
2) your portfolio containing a further 30 case studies, which must cover the 14 compulsory procedures
3) your log book detailing the cases you’ve undertaken
4 ) An essay of 6,000 words exploring professional decision making
Your Major Project, which is a 15,000- word report or research paper including critical discussions and reflections on how your findings apply to practice.

The Plastic Surgeons under instruction will observe, assist, be assisted and then operate independently but under the supervision of an experienced University appointed preceptor. They’ll care for their own private patients some of whom will be referred from their preceptor Surgeon. The Preceptor Surgeons are also members of the British Association of Plastic Reconstructive Aesthetic Surgeons.

This course will equip you to develop your career in private practice as a specialist aesthetic and cosmetic plastic surgeon. For six months during the course you’ll receive one-to-one supervision from a qualified consultant aesthetic plastic surgeon who is a registered member of UKAAPS. During this time you’ll observe them at work and carry out procedures under their expert supervision. This will provide the basis for much of your written work on the course. Our course is accredited by the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons.

On successful completion of this programme, you will be awarded a Master of Surgery which entitles you to use MCh after your name. MCh is an abbreviation of Magister Chirurgiae, the Latin for Master of Surgery. Master of Surgery, rather than MCh, will appear on your certificate.

The theme of regenerative medicine and the teaching of practical skills through simulation runs through each of the specialist pathways and modules.

Orthopaedics and Regenerative Medicine

The specialist surgical field of orthopaedics has been central in the use of regenerative medicine. The focus in modern orthopaedics is changing as research exposes ever greater knowledge widening the spectrum of therapeutic options encompassing reconstruction, regeneration and substitution (Kim, S-J. and Shetty, A.A., 2011; Shetty, A.A. and Kim, S-J., 2013; Kim, J-M., Hans, J.R. and Shetty, A.A., 2014).

Research methods, studies in regenerative medicine and other emerging technologies feature poorly in the standard curriculum of the orthopaedic trainee. This limits the quality of research output, reduces the potential for innovation and slows the rates of adoption of transformative treatments for patients, while leaving the surgeon unable to critically evaluate new treatments.

This programme targets this deficiency with a strong emphasis on research methodology and critical analysis that is based on a platform formed of in-depth scientific knowledge and proven by translation into clinical practice.

Otorhinolaryngology

Otorhinolaryngology (Ear, Nose and Throat surgery – ENT) is a diverse surgical specialty that involves the management of both children and adults. In contrast to other surgical specialties the management of a significant number of conditions requires a non-surgical approach. An understanding of the pathogenesis and progression of pathology is essential. This surgical specialty is rapidly evolving. Significant progress has been made through regenerative medicine and technology, some locally through mobile platforms.

Entry into Otorhinolaryngology is competitive. This is often despite the fact that whilst at University many medical students may have had little, if any, formal training in ENT. Some junior trainees entering the specialty have had limited exposure which may affect their decision making.

The MCh in Surgery (Otorhinolaryngology) course aims to prepare a trainee to meet the challenges of the current and future challenges in Otorhinolaryngology. It provides an evidence based approach for the management of patients, and provides a foundation for those who will eventually undertake formal exit examinations in this specialty.

Urology

Urology is a surgical specialty dealing with the problems associated with the urinary tract and it deals with cancer, non-cancer, functional problems and diseases (Khan, F., Mahmalji, W., Sriprasad, S. and Madaan, S., 2013). In urology many problems can be managed with medications (for example treating erectile dysfunction and lower urinary tract symptoms have become largely by pharmaceutical agents) and this underpins the importance of understanding the basic science and molecular biology as applied to the specialty.

This surgical field is constantly evolving with technology being the main driver. Improvements have been made through lasers, optics, gadgets and robotics (Jeong, Kumar and Menon, 2016). Regenerative medicine is fast evolving in urology. The architectural simplicity of hollow structures (such as bladder) and tubes (such as the ureters and urethra) make them particularly amenable.

Despite the fact that many medical students may not have had a urology placement during their training (Derbyshire and Flynn, 2011) the specialty is very much sought after. Getting into urological training is very competitive. Doctors typically undertake research, obtain higher degrees and publish papers in peer-reviewed journals in order to advance their surgical training. A MCh in Surgery (Urology) will therefore be significantly valuable to you for not only your professional knowledge and skills but also to help you reach your goals of becoming a Consultant.

The MCh in Surgery (Urology) will prepare you to meet the challenges of current and future urologic medicine and surgery. All this provides a platform for further advancement of your scientific knowledge, innovative and forward thinking, career progression and camaraderie with fellow students.

Ophthalmology

Ophthalmology is a surgical specialty dealing with disorders of the eye and visual pathways. Although the treatment of eye conditions involves a range of therapeutic options, including medicine, laser and surgery, the surgical field in particular is constantly evolving with technology being the main driver. Improvements are being made through lasers, optics, and minimally invasive surgical procedures with enhanced outcomes for patients.

There is very little ophthalmology teaching in modern medical school curricula. However, the speciality is highly sought after with intense competition for a limited number of training positions. Therefore, doctors typically undertake research, obtain higher degrees and publish papers in peer-reviewed journals in order to advance their surgical training and improve their chances of achieving a training number. A MCh in Surgery (Ophthalmology) will provide you with a solid foundation and valuable qualification to enhance selection onto a career pathway in this highly competitive field, culminating in a Consultant appointment. The MCh in Surgery (Ophthalmology) will prepare you as a trainee surgeon to meet the challenges of current and future ophthalmology. Specifically, you will be taught to critically analyse and evaluate data through learning research methodology. You will then learn to apply this to clinical practice and to evaluate the different treatment options and new technologies with respect to patient benefit and outcomes. In order for you to be able to think in an innovative manner and to be prepared for modern challenges in surgery, this programme aims to develop your scientific insight into current and emerging technologies that will inform your clinical practice and help you to apply basic scientific discoveries to your clinical work for the benefit of your patients.

It aims to facilitate you to develop a critical understanding of current novel and potentially beneficial therapies that use regenerative medicine and digital health platforms in a way that will inspire and encourage you to use this knowledge and develop your own ideas. To be a competent, safe and compassionate surgeon, you need to be able to develop your critical, analytical and problem solving abilities.

The programme therefore will enable you to critically and analytically consider the evidence base presented to you, to confidently challenge this evidence and make comprehensive, considered and robust decisions on patient care. In doing so you will be enabled to think and work creatively and intellectually which in turn will stimulate you to search for new knowledge for the benefit of your patients and health care provision.

Teaching

The theory aspect of this programme is delivered in three block weeks at the University at the start of each semester. You also work with an identified consultant surgeon mentor in the field of cardiothoracic, general or orthopaedic surgery.

You are taught through five one-week study blocks in Year 1, and three one-week study blocks in Year 2. We use a variety of teaching methods in conjunction with practice-based learning in your workplace.

You are assessed through a variety of methods including practice-based competencies, a viva voce and written case studies.

Employability

On completion you are qualified as an SCP in cardiothoracic, general or orthopaedic surgery. These courses enable you to access a second specialist module independently, or progress to complete an MSc.

Programme structure

The programme runs on a semester basis over 2-4 years and involves approximately 10-15 hours of study each week, in a flexible modular manner.

The programme is delivered using a purpose-built learning environment that supports a variety of learning styles, and allows students flexibility in their study patterns.

Courses within the programme are also offered as Continuous Professional Development (CPD).

Year 1

Core modules in each area of vascular and endovascular surgery are aligned to the ISPC Curriculum. These are taught and assessed using a clinical problem-based approach, supported by systems-based review of the course material, which should mirror ‘in-the-workplace’ activities.

Component courses include Principles of Vascular Practice, Aneurysms, Venous & Lymphatic Disorders, Vascular Trauma and Principles of Endovascular Practice. Each semester, courses are taught concurrently such that a student may be engaged in 5-6 asynchronous discussions at any one time (one per course). Students will spent 10-15 hours on programme-related study each week (activities include reading the discussion thread, reading around the topic, contributing to the discussion).

Knowledge and understanding will be assessed in the second year, following completion of core modules, with a formal written examination (MCQs and EMIs) that will replicate the trainees upcoming exit exams.

Year 2

Academic modules will explore research and teaching methodology, whilst enabling students to develop the ability to analyse published evidence and enhance their interactive and written clinical communication skills.

Students are required to complete a dissertation based on original research or a systematic review in a relevant area of work. Alternatively, an individual with a number of peer-reviewed journal publications may undertake an academic critique of their work.

Career opportunities

The programme will offer an alternative to clinical / laboratory research training for those students who do not wish to take time out of surgical training. It will develop the trainee's academic portfolio and facilitate surgical research projects essential to a research active career.

This course is ideal for dentists with a range of experience, from those new to the discipline to those with considerable implant exposure.

You will develop the requisite knowledge and skills to undertake implant surgery and prosthodontic reconstruction with predictable long-term success while studying a comprehensive range of course units.

Coursework and assessment

Assessment is via written exams, essays, case presentations and viva voce.

The PGCert, PGDip and MSc courses run in succession. The PGCert offers a foundation in implantology, and the PGDip builds on this, offering a diverse range of contemporary experiences and techniques.

A research dissertation is required for the MSc qualification, many of which are published in international peer-reviewed journals.

Unit assessment methods include:

  • Research Methods: two tutor-marked assignments and participation in specified online group activities;
  • Biostatistics: two tutor-marked assignments;
  • Dissertation: an independent research project with a written report of 10,000-15,000 words.

Course unit details

There are four components to the course:

Research Methods unit: Training in skills related to the design, execution and interpretation of clinical and clinically related research.

Biostatistics unit:  Training in skills in data collection, simple analysis and interpretation of clinical and clinically related research.

Specialist Clinical units:  Gain an understanding of the scientific basis of implantology, with particular emphasis on current theories relevant to the diagnosis, treatment planning and clinical management of adult patients.

Research unit: This unit aims to give you skills in the identification, formulation and implementation of a specific research project and to give you experience of working independently.

Year 1 course content

Dissertation areas include the writing of a systematic review in any field of implant dentistry or lab-based research projects.

Completion of Years 1 and 2 provide the 180 credits needed for the Dental Implantology MSc.

COURSE SUMMARY

This course has been produced in consultation with clinical specialists to ensure that it provides the appropriate content for orthopaedic trainees and advanced therapists to progress in orthopaedics in the current climate. Not only will you have input from our own, highly experienced staff, you will also be taught by clinical experts who are in current practice.  

Key lectures and case discussion sessions will be delivered on campus days by the consultant faculty, who will also guide the distance learning element of the course. This course will also give you access to expertise in clinical assessment, rehabilitation, spinal pathology and biomechanics as well as specialist surgical skills workshops.

Modules can also be taken as stand-alone courses for continuing professional development.

COURSE DETAILS

The course runs full-time over one year and part-time over three years giving you the chance to exit with the following awards:

  • Postgraduate Certificate: two modules
  • Postgraduate Diploma: four modules
  • Master's: four modules plus a dissertation

Part-time study with elements of distance learning is delivered in blocks for those involved in busy clinical practice.

Observational clinical placements in hospitals and sports clubs are arranged for full-time students in the specialist areas of spinal orthopaedics, lower limb orthopaedics and upper limb orthopaedics.

TEACHING

Delivery is by full-time (one year) and part-time attendance (three years) at the University. Please note: international applicants are only able to apply for the full-time route.

A programme of formal lectures, case discussion seminars and workshops, together with online learning is delivered to students by a team of orthopaedic consultants, radiologists, advanced therapists and other specialists. Attendance is approximately five to six days per module with distance on-line learning released weekly and live webinars. Both full and part-time students are taught together.

All supportive material from the taught days is recorded on our virtual learning environment, Blackboard.

Each of the three clinical modules, upper limb, lower limb, and spinal, covers the advanced assessment and differential diagnosis of orthopaedic and sports-related disorders, including pre-operative, intra-operative and post-operative surgery management and rehabilitation strategies.

For those attending full-time, additional observational placements are an integral part of the course. These are arranged for specialist areas of spinal orthopaedics, upper limb orthopaedics and lower limb orthopaedics. Placements are offered in key orthopaedic departments and sports clubs.

Research skills sessions are integrated throughout the course.

This course allows for a variety of assessments, depending on

the module you will be undertaking and can include:

The course is delivered in new state of the art practical and workshop facilities. Extensive on-line resources are available to aid study.

This course has been produced in consultation with clinical specialists to ensure that it provides the appropriate content for orthopaedic trainees and advanced therapists. You will gain the skills and qualification to compete for specialist posts in orthopedics within the NHS and private practice.

This course addresses the needs of orthopaedic trainees and of experienced non-medical health professionals who have been training/developing in their clinical roles.  

Many doctors have advanced to higher posts in surgery as a result of completing the MSc.

The course works with a number of orthopaedic companies to provide specialist workshops.

There are also a number of bursaries available through these companies.

It promotes the development of expert perioperative practitioners with the ability to think critically utilising a relevant evidence base.

It also aims to promote a multi disciplinary/professional team (MDT/MP) approach to perioperative management, meeting the requirement of the Department of Health Practitioner Programmes.

Course overview:
The course is aimed at people who wish to develop their role within the surgical team, supporting the team in the delivery of high quality patient care.

As well as developing your ability to respond and be proactive in the complex assessment and management of patients undergoing surgery in a variety of settings, you will examine how to develop, enhance and improve the quality of perioperative management within the health care arena in order to provide improved care provision through the development of appropriate knowledge and skills.

One of the real strengths of this course is its flexibility. You can choose to study the whole Postgraduate Diploma or you can simply pick and choose the modules that suit your aspirations and those of your organisation.

Entry Requirements:
• You need to be a professionally registered health practitioner, with current registration as a health care professional
• You must also possess either a degree or equivalent level qualification, or provide evidence of relevant experience of working in perioperative management. (This will be assessed prior to or during interview).
AND
• You and your employer will have identified and obtained the full agreement of a Consultant Surgeon who will act as your clinical supervisor during the Course.

By the end of the course you will be able to:
• Identify and appraise current literature in relation to perioperative care management and identify the appropriate use of literature in relation to perioperative management.
• Identify and critically evaluate the diverse needs of the patient in the perioperative arena and the need to ensure appropriate channelling of resources, appreciating diversity in culture and lifestyle amongst patients in a variety of health care settings.
• Act innovatively in relation to perioperative services and to provide leadership in your specific area of practice.
• Deliver expert and creative approaches to perioperative management, educational enhancement and the development of strategies for evaluation and research in perioperative management.

Dissertation/report

All MA students submit either a dissertation or a report.

The dissertation is based on original empirical research, whereas the report is based on secondary research, often taking the form of a literature review.
