The UCL Division of Psychiatry is pleased to offer this programme focused on clinical practice in mental health and its evidence base. The Clinical Mental Health Sciences MSc integrates biological, psychological and social perspectives on mental health and caters both for psychology graduates and for clinicians wishing to undertake a broad-based, rigorous and flexible higher degree.

Degree information

Students will develop an in-depth understanding of current evidence regarding mental health problems and the interventions provided to address them, as well as enhancing their research skills. A wide range of options from across the School of Life and Medical Sciences at UCL allows students to tailor a programme that fully fits their needs.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme consists of 1–2 core double modules (30–60 credits), 4–6 optional modules (60–90 credits) and a dissertation/report (60 credits). A diploma may be awarded to students who complete the equivalent of 8 taught single modules, amounting to 120 credits. A certificate may be awarded to students who complete the equivalent of 4 taught single modules, amounting to 60 credits.

-Core Principles of Mental Health Research (double module)
-Clinical Mental Health (double module – compulsory only for those who do not have at least six months’ full-time experience, or the equivalent, of working in mental health settings).

Research project/report
All students undertake a final project. This may be a research project, to be reported as a paper of 6,000-8,000 words ready for submission to a specified journal, a blog of 1,000 words and a 20-minute talk, or a clinical project of 10,000 words reporting on a clinical topic or service evaluation.

Teaching and learning
The programme is delivered through lectures, seminars and workshops, with considerable use of supporting online learning. Assessment methods include one unseen examination, coursework including designing questionnaires and protocols and analysing data, giving talks and presenting posters, and a final report in the format of a journal paper or brief for clinicians or service planners.

Placement
The programme team support students in obtaining volunteer placements in relevant mental health care and research settings, but this is not a formal part of the course and is entirely optional.

Careers

For non-clinicians, the programme will be an excellent grounding for clinical training, such as in clinical psychology, or for embarking on a research career in mental health. Many graduates go on to research assistant, clinical support worker or assistant psychologist posts as a first destination. For clinicians, this is a great opportunity to gain a higher qualification through a programme based in a leading university department which can be closely tailored to your interests across clinical, research and management fields.

Employability
Students will be taught by leading experts in their fields, will gain a strong clinical understanding of mental health, and will be able to develop their skills in research, service design and evaluation, and writing and presenting. Previous Division of Psychiatry Master’s graduates have been enthusiastic about their career enhancement, both through their programme and the connections they have made through it. A large proportion of our first cohort of graduates have gone on to paid employment in relevant areas of mental health, especially research assistant, clinical support worker, psychological wellbeing practitioner and assistant psychologist posts. Facilities

The University has made significant financial investment in the Psychology Division over recent years upgrading accommodation, facilities and equipment used exclusively for the provision of our psychology courses and for research. We have a first class undergraduate teaching laboratory suite and a second teaching laboratory specifically catering for postgraduate students.

In addition there are specialist suites dedicated to particular areas of interest in psychology, including:

social interaction, group work and interviewing
computer gaming and cyberpsychology
eye-tracking
cognitive modelling and visual analysis
psychophysiology.

Alongside these are new flexible cubicles for student project work, a psychometric test bank library, and a technical workshop.

Delivery and assessment

The course is delivered through lectures, interactive workshops, small group teaching and one-on-one supervision. There will also be an expectation that students will engage in independent study during the course. All staff teaching on the course is research-active in their field of interest which includes members from the Communication for Inclusion Research Unit (CIRU) and the Specific Language Impairment Research Unit (SLIRU). Students will also have access to the extensive new facilities within the Division of Psychology and the University's Virtual Learning Environment.

International students in psychology can also access additional language and study skills support, as well as help in acclimatising, via our own International Student Support Officer.

Career opportunities

Students generally choose the MSc Applied Child Psychology because they wish to pursue a career working with children (as a teacher, support worker, and so on).

Many already work with children and complete the course in order to improve their prospects of promotion and career progression. Others see the qualification as a means of helping to secure a path to teacher training or a doctoral training place in educational psychology. It is also possible to pursue an academic and / or research career in child / developmental psychology following graduation (by working as a research assistant or associate, for example, or by studying for a PhD).

Your qualification in psychology is likely to be popular with a whole range of potential employers because you will have demonstrated an ability to write essays and reports, to master advanced statistics and to talk and present in front of other people (amongst other transferable skills).

This MSc gives students a grounding in the nature, history, content and context of psychoanalytic theory, as used by practising psychoanalysts. It provides a comprehensive introduction to current psychoanalytic thinking, rooted in the history and development of ideas and with attention to the application of psychoanalytic ideas to other fields.

Degree information

Students learn about the medical and cultural context in which psychoanalysis began, through to contemporary clinical and theoretical perspectives. The teaching programme has a firm basis in the works of Sigmund Freud, but represents the breadth of the British psychoanalytic traditions, as well as major international contributions, the interface with the arts, and how psychoanalysis fits in with modern science.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme consists of four core taught modules (120 credits) and a conceptual research dissertation (60 credits).

Teaching and learning
The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars and tutorials. The various seminar series are organised by experienced psychoanalysts or academics who are experts in the field concerned. Student performance is assessed through unseen written examination, coursework in the form of essays, and the dissertation.

Careers

This MSc provides a very good background to formal clinical training in psychoanalysis, adult or child psychotherapy or counselling and nearly half of our graduates pursue these options. A similar number continue with their academic studies either at UCL or elsewhere, often registering for a PhD in either psychoanalytic theory or empirical research. Some graduates progress to the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology, often at UCL which has the largest programme in the UK.

If you have a degree in early childhood studies, pre-school education or a related subject, our MA offers a great opportunity to explore aspects of young children’s lives in more depth, examining current policies and practices to build on your existing knowledge. If that’s you, why not take this opportunity to boost your skills and knowledge? You’ll be able to link your newly-learned theories and research with your practice from the start, boosting your contribution to your workplace and enhancing your career prospects. Taught by experienced tutors who are passionate about using insights from research to enhance the lives of young children and their families. The course focusses on early childhood education from birth until eight years old and you'll graduate with a valuable postgraduate qualification.

Teaching times: Tuesday evenings (5-8pm) plus day time study for full-time students; Tuesday evenings only for part-time students. For all part-time students and for full-time students starting in January, there are two Saturday day schools and a daytime summer school in the last week of July in trimester 3.

For the June intake you can only choose to study part-time.

There are no formal work placements for this course. If you’re already working in an early years environment then you can immediately put your new skills and experience into practice. Our course also gives you the opportunity to visit different early years settings thanks to our links with local nurseries. If you’re interested in gaining experience as a researcher you may be able to get involved with research projects run by our Department of Education and the Early Childhood Research Group.

Developed in collaboration with academic staff and expert practitioners, the course provides an exceptional distance learning programme supported by high-quality personal tutoring. Working closely with your tutor, you will undertake a thorough self-evaluation to identify gaps in your knowledge and understanding. This will help you link your learning to your professional practice and allow you to steer the direction of your development.

A virtual learning environment will enable you to connect with your personal tutor and share your experiences with your peers. You will be encouraged to collaborate with fellow students on the course and colleagues in your school in order to refine your knowledge and get the most from the programme. You will be provided with online resources, including recorded expert presentations, and key information throughout the year to help you meet the learning outcomes for your course.

Adult Nursing aims to provide graduates holding a health-related degree the opportunity to study at Level 7 – the theory that underpins nursing practice and develops knowledge and skills through evidence-based learning. Practice experience is gained in both hospital and community settings. On successful completion of this programme students will be able to enter Part one (Adult) of the Register held by the NMC.

MSc Mental Health and Clinical Psychology is designed for those with interests or experience in the field of mental health and clinical psychology, and has a distinctive emphasis on the experiences of people who live with distress.

You'll develop expertise in the psychology of mental health and the related area of clinical psychology. The course focuses on psychosocial approaches to the study and 'treatment' of mental distress, in both clinical and community settings. You'll explore the social and cultural context from which mental distress occurs, and the responses of those who have experienced distress first hand and develop an understanding of psychological approaches to prevention, treatment and community means of social support and guidance.

Unique course delivery

Experts by experience (sometimes referred to as service users) are heavily involved in the delivery of the course and design of the overall course structure. Jacqui Dillon (chair of the Hearing Voices Network) is a consultant on the design and implementation of this unique programme.

Clinical placements

All students complete a clinically relevant placement. LSBU has excellent links with various mental health organisations. Previous students have had placements as honorary assistant psychologists at NHS organisations including South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust and Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust.

Previous placements outside the NHS have included a support worker at Cyrenians (a voluntary organisation supporting individuals with mental health difficulties, living in the community), and a recovery worker at Camden MIND. We can assist you in finding a suitable placement.

We have placed employability at the heart of the psychology courses and the teaching and learning ensure you develop skills valuable to future employment. You could go on to work in a number of areas including clinical psychology, psychotherapy, care coordination, social work, mental health nursing, and occupational therapy. The course could help with senior roles and responsibilities, management and supervision, or senior roles within charities or NGOs.

Please note that successful completion of the programme does not qualify you to practice as a clinical psychologist in the UK and will not allow you to register with the Health Professions Council as a 'practitioner psychologist', nor to use the protected title 'clinical psychologist'. If you wish to apply for UK Doctoral training you must still have a BPS accredited undergraduate degree in Psychology (a good upper second is often a minimum requirement). This Masters course does not substitute the BPS accreditation requirement.

The MSc in Psychology is a conversion course for individuals already possessing an undergraduate degree in a field other than Psychology but who wish to develop a professional career in Psychology. Previous study of psychology is not required.

By providing the requisite knowledge and skills for post-graduate education and training, this conversion course is the key gateway to a career in clinical, counselling, forensic, health, educational, occupational or other areas of Psychology.

Our previous Graduate Diploma level conversion course was accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS) and satisfied the requirements for the Graduate Basis of Chartership of the BPS. This new Masters level conversion course is awaiting accreditation by the BPS and we expect to achieve accreditation by June 2017.

Psychology is an exceptionally versatile degree because it offers understanding of many aspects of human behaviour, applicable to many sectors of society, such as education, health, business and social welfare. The course is amongst the first in the UK to teach the core curriculum in an integrated fashion, which brings together different approaches to psychology within each module and thereby provides a deeper and richer understanding of human behaviour.

Employability

As most psychology graduates will go into a wide range of careers, there is no such thing as a traditional career path for graduates. A majority of psychology graduates decide to pursue careers in other fields and as psychology graduates, they leave with an almost unmatched range of transferable skills, from excellent written and analytical skills to an understanding of how people behave.

However if you do want to stay in psychology, then a conversion course, accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS), together with an appropriate qualification within the specific field of psychology could lead you to a career as a Chartered Psychologist in clinical, forensic, educational or occupational psychology. Although our previous conversion course and all our existing undergraduate courses are accredited by the BPS, this new Masters level conversion course is awaiting accreditation from the BPS and we expect this to be achieved by June 2017.

This course will teach you excellent written, analytical and numerical skills which will enable you to pursue a wide range of careers in areas such as counselling, teaching, the probation and court services, market research, human resources and business.

Careers support

Our department provides careers support and advice for the time our students study with us and beyond. We organise various careers activities such as talks and seminars, and have arranged work placements in collaboration with many organisations. For example:

• NHS clinics and hospital units (psychosexual, forensic and clinical psychology units)
• brain damage units
• addiction rehabilitation units
• charitable organisations working with stroke patients
• children with disabilities
• young offenders

We also hold an annual careers fair for our second and third year students and work closely with London South Bank University alumni who have gone on to successful careers in Psychology.

Career progression

Recent graduates have gone onto roles such as Assistant Psychologist (Clinical), Research Assistant, Social Worker, Mental Health Support Worker, and Mental Health Nurse.

If you graduate from this course, you'll be able to apply for further study at postgraduate level. The academic strength of this course means that you can also consider entering the field of academic research (e.g. a recent student has just started studying for a PhD)

If you gain significant professional practice experience you would be able to consider a practitioner MSc course such as our part-time MSc Addiction Psychology and Counselling.
