- Description -

Candidates enrolled for the Postgraduate Certificate (PgCert) in Nutraceuticals, Functional Foods and Supplements take 60 credit points of modules. Students wishing to proceed towards the Postgraduate Diploma (PgDip) take a total of 120 credit points of modules. After succeeding with all of the taught modules, candidates may chose to progress to the MSc (180 credit points) by completing an approved research project.

- Teaching and learning assessment -

The e-teaching is based on a virtual classroom model involving diverse activities online including; lectures, presentations, set reading. Students have opportunities to participate in discussion group, collaborative learning, coursework, and independent work. Masters students will complete a dissertation based on research according to their circumstances and supervisors expertise.

Assessment methods include presentations, reports, essays, quizzes, moderated on-line discussions and (for MSc) a written project report and supervisors comments.

- Work placement / study abroad -

The course is fully distance learning. Candidates taking the MSc must either arrange appropriate laboratory access at their location or can come to undertake their project at the Coleraine campus.

Career options

Successful completion of this course should enhance employment prospects within the functional foods, and general food and health sector from food manufacture to retail and legislation. The skills base is relevant also for nutritionists, dieticians, and members of pharmaceutical professions, Government services, teachers, Universities, higher education institutions, as well as independent or private laboratories. Graduates are expected to develop professional competencies related to either research and development, quality control, analysis, education or training. You will also develop essential skills in communicating and implementing your recommendations for clients as well as specialist and non-specialist audiences.

Fundamental Sport Nutrition

Covers the basics of sport nutrition, including a critical appraisal of the current thoughts with regards to carbohydrate, fat and protein requirements of athletes. The module involves traditional teaching and problem based learning.

Practical Sport Nutrition

As well as gaining professional accreditations in body composition assessment (ISAK), during this module you will be taught the key practical techniques required to work as a sport nutritionist – including diet analysis, assessment of energy expenditure, reflective practice and much more. The module will involve laboratory practicals, as well as classroom based teaching.

Research Skills

To equip you with the skills to perform an independent research project, fundamental research skills and statistical analysis are taught using practical sessions and problem based learning.

Exercise Metabolism

A comprehensive understanding of exercise metabolism is essential to fully understand sport nutrition. This module covers the basics of exercise metabolism, with the role of nutrition clearly embedded in the learning.

Supplements and Drugs in Sport

A sport nutritionist must be able to give accurate and professional advice to athletes with regards to the issues and concerns related to sports supplements. The role of WADA and UKAD will be examined, as well as how to set up safe supplement policies. At the end of the module students are encouraged to sit the free online UKAD anti-doping accreditation which is a requirement of entry onto the SENr register.

Applied Placement

All students engage in a 12 week placement provided by the university. Placements can be in high level sporting clubs such as premier league football or premiership rugby and super league rugby clubs, as well as with local sports clubs. Under mentorship from an experienced LJMU tutor, you will be guided through the process and gain hands-on experience working as a sport nutritionist.

Research Project

All students complete a research project in semester 3. This project can be individual or in small groups and can be on any topic of your choice related to sport nutrition. Some students choose to join current research projects running in the sport nutrition department whilst others prefer to fully design their own project.

The Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Photography is a 14-month, part-time distance learning course. It is one of only two part-time distance learning courses in the UK on offer to photographers employed in healthcare and it is the only course that supplements distance learning with face-to-face teaching.

Through a combination of theory and practice-based assignments, delivered through e-learning and face-to-face teaching methods, you will have the opportunity to advance your photographic skills and critical thinking through evidence-based, reflective practice.

Structure

Four days at the start of the course in September, two days in November and a further two days in June. During the study days, you will be taught through face-to-face teaching sessions, group discussions, student presentations and workshops. Students are required to have regular one-to-one tutorials with their tutor to discuss their work in progress.

Students enrolled on the programme are employed as photographers within the healthcare profession. This course is recognised nationally, with previous clinical photography students regularly achieving success in the Institute of Medical Illustrator’s Annual Awards and presenting at the Institute’s annual conference. On graduating from the course you are eligible to apply for full membership to the Institute of Medical Illustrators and entry onto the Committee for the Accreditation of Medical Illustration Practitioners (CAMIP) Voluntary Register.

If you wish to gain practical experience as a Sport and Exercise Nutritionist there is an opportunity to complete an extracurricular training programme during the first few weeks of the course. If you complete the entire programme you will be eligible to apply for an internship. This could provide you with an opportunity to gain experience in sport science working under supervision with our University's sports teams, sporting partners and elite performers, whilst studying for a masters degree.

There are no option modules on this course as it is designed to facilitate preparation for accreditation with the Sport and Exercise Nutrition Register. We will provide opportunities for the development of your professional skills relevant to a host of work across performance sport, physical activity, exercise and health. It will also cover the key theories of sport and exercise nutrition.

Assessment

Modules are assessed through a mix of coursework assignments, case studies, examinations, laboratory reports and presentations appropriate to the programme. Each module is assessed through the equivalent of 4,000 words.

It will provide you with a deep understanding of the complex relationships between nutrition and health, and the range and potential of nutritional management to postpone or treat disease.

PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

Nutritional medicine concerns itself with the part that nutrition plays in health, disease, lifecycle and ageing.

The aim of the programme is to inform and educate those to whom the public turns for advice on nutritionally-related aspects of health and disease and those involved in the manufacture of foods and food supplements.

It is appropriate for the in-service training of doctors, dietitians, pharmacists and healthcare workers.

The programme consists of three-day taught periods at the University, preceded by preparatory study, and followed by consolidation and assessment. It will teach you to take a critical and scholarly approach to the theory, practice, literature and research findings within the subject.

This programme is studied part-time. On successful completion of the programme students may apply for registration as a Nutritionist on the UK Voluntary Register of Nutritionists via the Association for Nutrition. EDUCATIONAL AIMS OF THE PROGRAMME

The aim of the programme is to provide Masters-level learning in Nutritional Science related to health and disease. Students will gain knowledge and skills necessary to investigate, understand and apply the concepts of Nutritional Medicine in relation to current health issues. Specifically, the programme aims:
-To further the students’ knowledge of the mechanisms underlying disorders with nutritional aetiologies at both the biochemical and molecular level
-To develop evidence-based knowledge and practice in students in healthcare roles, private practice or industry who provide nutrition-related care or advice

The Plant Biotechnology programme is the combination of different fields of the classical plant sciences (e.g. plant physiology, plant breeding, plant pathology) working with a whole new range of techniques and possibilities opened up by modern molecular biology.

Programme summary

Due to rapid technological developments in the genomics, molecular biology and biotechnology, the use of molecular marker technology has accelerated the selection of new plant varieties with many desirable traits. It also facilitates the design, development and management of transgenic plants. At present, plants are increasingly used to produce valuable proteins and secondary metabolites for food and pharmaceutical purposes. New insights into the molecular basis of plant-insect, plant- pathogen and crop-weed relationships enable the development of disease-resistant plants and strategies for integrated pest management. A fundamental approach is combined with the development of tools and technologies to apply in plant breeding, plant pathology, post-harvest quality control, and the production of renewable resources. Besides covering the technological aspects, Plant Biotechnology also deals with the ethical issues and regulatory aspects, including intellectual property rights.

Specialisations

Functional Plant Genomics
Functional genomics aims at understanding the relationship between an organism's genome and its phenotype. The availability of a wide variety of sequenced plant genomes has revolutionised insight into plant genetics. By combining array technology, proteomics, metabolomics and phenomics with bioinformatics, gene expression can be studied to understand the dynamic properties of plants and other organisms.

Plants for Human and Animal Health
Plants are increasingly being used as a safe and inexpensive alternative for the production of valuable proteins and metabolites for food supplements and pharmaceuticals. This specialisation provides a fundamental understanding of how plants can be used for the production of foreign proteins and metabolites. In addition, biomedical aspects such as immunology and food allergy, as well as nutritional genomics and plant metabolomics, can also be studied.

Molecular Plant Breeding and Pathology
Molecular approaches to analyse and modify qualitative and quantitative traits in crops are highly effective in improving crop yield, food quality, disease resistance and abiotic stress tolerance. Molecular plant breeding focuses on the application of genomics and QTL-mapping to enable marker assisted selection of a trait of interest (e.g. productivity, quality). Molecular plant pathology aims to provide a greater understanding of plant-insect, plant-pathogen and crop-weed interactions in addition to developing new technologies for integrated plant health management.These technologies include improved molecular detection of pathogens and transgene methods to introduce resistance genes into crops.

Your future career

The main career focus of graduates in Plant Biotechnology is on research and development positions at universities, research institutes, and biotech- or plant breeding companies. Other job opportunities can be found in the fields of policy, consultancy and communication in agribusiness and both governmental and non-governmental organisations. Over 75% of Plant Biotechnology graduates start their (academic) career with a PhD.

The MA in Early Childhood is based at Riverside Campus. The course has been structured to integrate with the work patterns of busy professionals. You will use web-based materials, email and scanned resources, and will be supported with direct contact concentrated in six Saturday schools throughout the year.

How will I be assessed?

We use a variety of assessment methods, including digital presentations, essays and critical reflections, which all enable you to apply the topics studied to your own area of personal interest.

It is recommended that you spend some time each week working on your degree, which could involve reading, researching or writing. In addition, tutors are available for tutorial support whenever is convenient, in face-to-face meetings, by phone/Skype or by online tutorial. This supplements the taught sessions which take place on six Saturdays throughout the year.

The amazing feats of world-class athletes across the huge range of sports has projected the issues of performance into the public eye, and sports nutrition is now recognised as a key part of supporting training and competition at all levels of participation. The Masters degree in Sport and Exercise Nutrition at the University of Westminster offers the chance to study the science behind sports nutrition, and its applications for both the 'weekend warrior' and the elite athlete. It also puts the controversies surrounding the use of supplements under scientific scrutiny, looking at the key evidence for and against performance benefits. The aim of the course is to produce sports nutritionists who are strongly focused on the science behind the subject, but who also have some experience of the practicalities of delivering sound guidance to individuals and teams who are looking to use nutrition as part of their training programmes. To this end, a number of guest lecturers contribute their expertise in key related areas, and students are also given the opportunity of shadowing established sports nutrition practitioners.

Course content

The course covers the key principles of sports nutrition and exercise physiology, including the latest research papers, and aims to develop the ability to apply critical awareness to topics across the broad remit of sports nutrition, from measurement of exercise performance to the assessment of mental performance. The modules studied are designed to underpin the subject, and create a sound base for the development of ideas for the research project, which offers students a wide degree of flexibility to pursue their personal interests. The course can be studied full-time over one year, or in part-time mode over a varying time, up to five years.

Associated careers

Qualified sport and exercise nutritionists find employment in a number of areas, ranging from research, to public health nutrition, to performance training, and many eventually become self-employed and create their own consultancy companies which can be very successful. The course is designed to make transition into any of these areas as smooth and effective as possible.

Professional recognition

The course is accredited by the Association for Nutrition (AFN). This allows students to take the title Associate Nutritionist, which is the first step on the professional recognition and registration ladder.

The Sport and Exercise Nutrition MSc has received the Recognition Award of the International Society for Sports Nutrition (ISSN), and students are encouraged to take the Certification of the ISSN (CISSN) exam towards the end of their period of study.

The American Graduate School in Paris and Arcadia University jointly offer an accelerated Dual Masters program allowing students to earn two US-accredited Master’s degrees in three years:

Each program followed individually normally extends over two years, which would make a total of four years to earn the two degrees separately. Thanks to curricula combinations, the accelerated dual program allows students to earn both degrees in three years.

Students in this program spend three semesters in Paris, France, at the American Graduate School in Paris, and three semesters in the United States, at Arcadia University, in the greater Philadelphia area. They may choose to start the program at either of the two institutions. Each portion of the program provides a different cultural and academic experience, while both have in common a challenging and student-dedicated learning environment.

Description of the M.A. in International Relations and Diplomacy

The curriculum of the M.A. in International Relations and Diplomacy teaches the cornerstone theories that explain interactions between countries, and also examines current world affairs through the various lenses of international relations: political, diplomatic, economic, environmental, cultural, and social. A range of area electives supplements this global approach allowing each student to gear the program towards his or her field of interest and professional goals.

Courses take place at AGS in Paris. They are taught in English and follow the American system of higher education while taking advantage of the school’s location in France, with guest speakers and visits to embassies, international organizations headquartered in Paris and European Union institutions. No knowledge of French language is necessary to attend. The International Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR) degree offers an innovative curriculum giving students a sophisticated understanding of today’s international issues by bridging the various sub-disciplines of this emerging field: human rights, international law and organizations, mediation and conflict transformation, public health issues, economic development, and environmental sustainability.

The coursework provides strong theoretical and analytical foundations and is complemented with hands-on experiences, including travels to key sites of the history of international conflict, and an internship allowing students to gain professional practice while developing a network of useful contacts.

Courses take place at Arcadia University in the United States, in Glenside, in the greater Philadelphia area (Pennsylvania). The faculty and staff at the International Peace and Conflict Resolution Department are committed to addressing the individual needs of each student, and work closely with them to make every component of the program fit their interests and career goals.

In order to complete the dual degree program and graduate with the M.A. in International Peace and Conflict Resolution and the M.A. in International Relations and Diplomacy, students are required to successfully complete 65-68 graduate credit-hours.
