The programme has been designed to be flexible and responsive to the specific needs of those training, ensuring it is relevant to their particular work circumstances.

The varied professional backgrounds of students facilitates lively discussion and in-depth consideration of the application of psychotherapeutic concepts to their supervision, consultation and coaching practice.

Teaching is provided both by academic staff and experienced practitioners, who use a variety of training methods, including experiential exercises, audio-visual recordings, formal lectures and seminars.

Different psychotherapeutic and psychological approaches to supervision, consultation and coaching are taught so that practitioners can better satisfy the needs of individuals, teams and organisations seeking their services.

Programme structure

The MSc in Supervision and Consultation is studied over two academic years and is part-time. All MSc students are initially registered for one academic year, and successful completion of all modules in the first year leads to progression into year two.

This is a specialised training course which leads to advanced knowledge and practice in the supervision and coaching of staff, and consultation to teams and organisations.

The School of Psychology is a hub of energy, information and support. You will have access to the following facilities:

  • Video and audio editing (image and audio manipulation; interview and telephone recording; transcription equipment)
  • Seminar and classrooms (three fully equipped rooms for presentations and an observation suite (video and audio recording)

Supervision and consultation practice

It is essential that, during the training, you are in a position to provide ongoing supervision and consultation within your workplace. You will also need to be able to present that practice within different teaching contexts on the programme and receive advice and feedback on your practice from other trainees and staff.

Your practice during the Supervision and Consultation Practice module will be overseen via feedback forms, small group consultation, audio/video review and live observation.

Applicant profiles

There are three pathways to entry on the programme:

  • A professionally qualified psychologist registered with the Health & Care Professions Council
  • A qualified psychotherapist or counsellor (psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioural, systemic, integrative) eligible to be registered with the UKCP, BPC, BABCP or BACP
  • Qualification in a relevant profession with knowledge of psychology at an undergraduate/postgraduate level (teaching, medicine, nursing, human resources, social work, occupational therapy)

All candidates should have experience of providing supervision and consultation or, as part of their employment, are required to supervise and consult to others.

Supervision makes an important contribution to the professional development and quality assurance of consultants and executive coaches. It can be a key differentiator in the marketplace and is increasingly central to many formal consulting and coaching qualifications.

About the programme

This 14-month part-time programme was developed by experienced practitioners who have a combination of supervision, research, psychological and organisation development (OD) experience.

The qualification will give you the skills, credibility and confidence to offer a new service to your clients. It is designed to build your status as a senior practitioner and supervisor of coaches and consultants.

Aimed at experienced OD consultants and executive coaches, this is an opportunity to be supervised on any aspect of your work, individually and as part of a group of equally experienced coaches. You will learn how to supervise other consultants and coaches effectively.

As with all Ashridge coaching programmes, this programme takes a relational perspective. It develops your theoretical knowledge of the psychological underpinnings of supervision and your critical evaluation of supervision models and theories.

It is structured around three modules. The first two are based on a series of six intensive workshops, spread across the 14 months - each lasting two days. The third is the accreditation module.

This postgraduate course offers training in the skills and theoretical awareness that are necessary to be an effective supervisor of counsellors and psychotherapists.

The course is structured to provide the opportunity to critically evaluate and apply current models in the theory and practice of counselling supervision. You will develop the appropriate skills to become a more effective and informed counselling supervisor and will be able to reflect on current issues that relate to counselling supervision practice.

The course is delivered over six days of six hours duration (36 hours contact). The teaching is based on lecture, discussion, tutorials and small group discussions. It will also involve experiential work with dyadic/triadic group work and visual digital recording. Students will have formative assessment feedback from the course tutors during ‘live’ supervision sessions from within the student cohort.

The delivery of the Masters is through blended learning, combining stimulating experiential weekends and home study which provides flexibility to working professionals. Study comprises of a combination of home study packs that are accessible online and attending six once-a-month two-day teaching sessions at the University of South Wales. On the block teaching sessions you will experience workshops demonstrating creative approaches to practice, skills practice in small groups and group presentations. The M.Sc./P.Grad. Diploma in Clinical Supervision part-time course is aimed at practitioners in the helping professions who normally hold an honours degree in psychology or a related field and relevant post-graduate experience. It is specifically aimed at practising psychologists, (counselling, clinical, educational, health, work and organizational, etc.) psychotherapists, counsellors and mental health professionals who wish to further their professional development, reflective practice capability and train as supervisors.

The course is normally scheduled to take place on Saturdays (maximum two per month) and occasional Friday afternoons (approx five per year) to facilitate students who have work commitments. All students register on the M.Sc. course in the first instance. Students may choose to exit with a Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Supervision on successful completion of Year 1 course requirements. The Postgraduate Diploma as an exit qualification is equivalent to 60 ECTS. Students who successfully complete all the required elements of the M.Sc. course will be awarded the M.Sc. in Clinical Supervision.

Course Content:

The M.Sc. comprises eight modules including a supervised Professional Clinical Practice Module and a Dissertation. This innovative new course has been designed in response to the General Medical Councils (GMC 2012) policies around the selection, recognition and approval of clinical and educational supervisors in postgraduate medical education settings. It is mapped to relevant GMC Academy of Medical Educator (AoME) and Committee of Postgraduate Dental Deans and Directors (COPDEND) standards for clinical and educational supervisors. (It is anticipated that the course gain AoME recognition.)

The course has a blended learning approach, with interactive on-line learning being supported by four study days over the course of two semesters (typically running from October to June). Assessment strategies have a practical focus but are also designed to foster an informed, critical stance to key issue in Postgraduate Medical and Dental Education.

Assessment

The assessment strategy for this course combines formative and summative elements. Assessment is an integral part of your learning experience and we provide a range of opportunities for you to develop your assessment ideas with your allocated tutor(s). We have designed the assessment strategy to allow you to experience a range of approaches to assessment and make links between your experiences as learners on this course and those of your trainees. For example, you will keep a journal where you record your reflections on course learning experiences, with these being the basis of two reflective narratives submitted for summative assessment. Each of the assessments has been designed to allow you to make strong connections between your learning on the course and your practice as a medical educator. Each unit has three assessment points, linked to the end of blocks of themed learning. The table below summarises the assessment methods used on each unit.

You will be provided with a detailed assessment brief for each task and will have access to a named tutor who can provide guidance and support. Some tasks include opportunities to rehearse assessment activities. You will be provided with written feedback on all summative assessments with guidance on how to improve your performance on similar tasks in future.

Programmes

Master of Laws by coursework

You'll take one core course—Advanced Legal Study LAWS 581 worth 10 points—and make up the rest of your 120 points from a choice of other 500-level LAWS courses. Up to 40 points can be replaced by equivalent courses from another faculty or another university.

500-level LAWS courses differ from year to year and are either taught in block format, intensive format or seminars. Look at the course timetable to see when the intensive and block courses are offered. The seminar courses are mainly led by you and the other students who will prepare papers in advance.

Internship

International students can also choose to do a 20-point one-trimester internship. You'll work with a community, government or private sector organisation under the joint supervision of a Faculty member and an outside professional. Assessment is based on the work you produce, a journal and your performance at fortnightly seminars.

Master of Laws by dissertation and coursework

You'll take LAWS 581 Advanced Legal Study (10 points), a further 20 points from the Master of Laws course-selection and LAWS 592, a 90-point dissertation of 35,000 words.

The Master of Laws by thesis requires you to complete a 120-point 50,000 word thesis on an area of law that interests you. You'll also do the course Advanced Legal Study LAWS 581 at no extra cost.

Master of Laws by research portfolio

This is a more flexible combination of coursework and research on an approved topic. You'll take the 10-point Advanced Legal Study LAWS 581 and the 90-point Research Portfolio LAWS 593.

The research portfolio consists of two courses that include two research papers of 12,000 words each on related topics. You'll also complete a 2,500-word linking paper to establish and justify your research, as well as a further 20 points from Master of Laws courses.

Flexible study

Designed to be flexible, the Master of Laws offers courses that are taught in different formats. Some courses meet weekly, others are taught in a more compact format.

Block courses are taught in a concentrated manner over a one-to-two week period, and intensive courses are broken into chunks of eight to twelve hours. They are often taught over two-to-three consecutive evenings or in Friday afternoon and Saturday sessions, with a break of two-to-three weeks between sessions.

Workload and duration

The Master of Laws can be completed in one year of full-time study, or in up to three years part time.

If you are studying full time, you can expect a workload of 40–45 hours a week for much of the year. Part-time students doing two courses per trimester will need to do around 20–23 hours of work a week. Make sure you take this into account if you are working.

You can estimate your workload by adding up the number of points you'll be doing. One point is roughly equal to 10–12 hours work.

Systemic approaches to psychotherapy and family therapy have been the cornerstone of the Family Institute’s clinical practice, teaching and research since 1967. The programme aims to offer students opportunity to:
- develop in-depth understanding of conceptual frameworks underpinning systemic theory and practice applied to counselling;

Learning and teaching methods

The award integrates practice-based evidence with evidence-based practice and offers excellent training in research methods. You will study through a mixture of lectures, group discussion via action learning and independent study. Assessment will involve directed study assignments, analysis of practice in supervision and video or audio review.

Practice based learning is a central component to this award and is embedded in the philosophy of the award. The award has been designed to develop the professional requirements of counsellors from a variety of professional backgrounds and takes into account current British Psychological Society criteria for Chartered Counselling Psychologists.

Staff delivering this award have extensive experience of designing and teaching Family Therapy and Systemic Practice programmes at postgraduate level (UKCP accredited) as well as Counselling programmes leading to a BSc Hons in Counselling (BACP accredited). There is an increase in the demand for counsellors and there is a corresponding need for supervision and continuing professional development. More about this course

The course aims to produce competent, informed, reflective, and ethically and professionally sound practitioners of forensic psychology who are able to work in different settings. There will be a synthesis between taught workshops and your practical placements. Trainees are required to demonstrate core forensic psychology competencies at an advanced level and to complete D-level research. In addition to general forensic competencies and research, key areas of the course include consultancy, teaching and training, and assessments and interventions.

The course is delivered by a combination of professional workshops, supervised practice, research, and individual, group, and peer supervision. Course leaders are registered forensic psychologists with experience working in prisons, secure hospitals, and independent forensic practise in the UK and the US. Because working in multidisciplinary environments is increasingly important, some lectures are taught by registered psychologists in other fields, including health, occupational, and counselling psychology.

Throughout the course, critical reflection is encouraged on current discourses within contemporary forensic issues. We expect you to adopt a questioning stance to forensic practice that constantly looks to the multplicity of clients’ needs and expectations.

The course is assessed through a thesis portfolio (46,000 words in total) and a Viva Voce that assesses the thesis portfolio. Components that make up the portfolio include the following:

Professional accreditation

The course is approved by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), meaning that students who successfully complete the course are eligible to apply for registration as a forensic psychologist.

Modular structure

All teaching takes place in small groups, including presentations, visiting experts, seminars and workshops. Training begins with a two-week Induction period, during which time seminars will be given both morning and afternoon Wednesday through Friday. Subsequently, workshops take place every three to four weeks on a Friday.

Individual supervision sessions are arranged at the convenience of trainees and supervisors. As a trainee, you can expect supervision every 3-4 weeks during your first year and every 1-2 months during your second year. You will meet with your supervisory team at least four times a year. Supervisors will also provide telephone and email supervision throughout the year. We also expect trainees to take part in peer supervision through group meetings and through the use of Weblearn discussion forums.

The course does not have a module structure. However, several essential themes are addressed by lectures, supervision, and teaching and learning exercises throughout the course. These include, for example:
-Working with clients, eg developing a working alliance, giving feedback/cultural diversity, Intervention approaches, risk assessment approaches, trauma-informed intervention
-Working with other professionals, eg leadership and group process, multidisciplinary working and case conferences, providing supervision and directing the work of others
-Ethical and reflective practice, eg ethical decision making, reflective thinking and writing, evaluating practice including quality control
-Research skills, eg systematic review, writing for publication.

After the course

You can expect to go into careers within the prisons service, health service, charity sector, or academic sector in a professional capacity as a chartered psychologist and registered forensic psychologist.

Moving to one campus

Between 2016 and 2020 we're investing £125 million in the London Metropolitan University campus, moving all of our activity to our current Holloway campus in Islington, north London. This will mean the teaching location of some courses will change over time.

Whether you will be affected will depend on the duration of your course, when you start and your mode of study. The earliest moves affecting new students will be in September 2017. This may mean you begin your course at one location, but over the duration of the course you are relocated to one of our other campuses. Our intention is that no full-time student will change campus more than once during a course of typical duration.

All students will benefit from our move to one campus, which will allow us to develop state-of-the-art facilities, flexible teaching areas and stunning social spaces.
