This MSc is aimed at students who wish to pursue a geosciences-related career in the future energy sector, as it transitions from fossil fuels to a low carbon economy. The aim is to offer a programme that uses subsurface (geological) knowledge opening a diverse range of career pathways in lower carbon geoenergy technologies; the disposal of energy-related wastes and the hydrocarbon industry.

This MSc programme builds on the strength and reputation of the research groups operating in the School of GeoSciences on uses of the subsurface: carbon capture and storage (CCS); radioactive waste disposal; energy storage and extraction; unconventional and conventional hydrocarbons; wet and dry geothermal heat; and subsurface fluid tracing using noble gases and stable isotopes.

This programme will train students in the use of subsurface geological knowledge opening a diverse range of career pathways in lower carbon geoenergy technologies and the disposal of energy-related wastes. This year-long MSc mainly focuses on petroleum geoscience, but it is closely linked with other MSc programmes and research groups in petroleum engineering and reservoir geology at Heriot-Watt's Institute of Petroleum Engineering. About the programme

The MSc in Applied Petroleum Geoscience provides students with a thorough training in aspects of subsurface geology, geophysics and geo-engineering, relating to the exploration, appraisal and development of subsurface resources.

Although the programme mainly focuses on exploration for hydrocarbon resources, and delineation of hydrocarbon reservoirs in the subsurface, the skills and knowledge learned in this subject are applicable to all subsurface geoscience areas, including groundwater exploration, waste disposal or CO2 sequestration.

Project work, both as groups and individually is part of the programme. Two fieldtrips are also a permanent part of the course.

The UCD School of Earth Sciences run a one-year Petroleum Geoscience MSc. A range of geological and geophysical subjects are taught covering the hydrocarbon industry value chain from acquisition, exploration and appraisal to development and production. A multidisciplinary approach takes students through investigation of outcrop analogues as well as geophysical investigation of subsurface hydrocarbon systems.

The course is aimed at recent graduates as well as individuals with some industrial experience. Content is advised on by industrial partners with the aim of maintaining relevance to company needs. As part of the course training is provided in technical areas such as core logging and industry standard software. The most challenging and fulfilling aspect of the Reservoir Evaluation and Management programme is the project skills, particularly the team project, where students are tasked to propose a development plan for a real field. You will gain much from the strong emphasis on research in this programme. Besides enhancing knowledge and skills in numerous specialised courses, including a field-mapping course, you will conduct your own master’s thesis project within a research team (professor(s), postdoc(s), PhD-student(s)) and at the same time develop important scientific skills, such as reporting and presenting, needed in your future career.

Structure

The master’s programme offers 4 different majors: Geodynamics and Georesources, Surface Processes and Paleoenvironments, Geology of Basins and Soil and Groundwater.

  • In Geodynamics and Georesources, you will study rock-forming processes and mineral resources in the subsurface. The interaction between various physico-chemical processes in the Earth forms the core of this major. You will develop the ability to analyse and explain the complexity of the various interacting physical and chemical rock-forming processes and apply this knowledge to the exploration of natural resources.
  • In Surface Processes and Paleoenvironments, you will study the interaction between the geosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere and biosphere. The focus is on understanding present-day and past processes and placing these processes in a context of global change on various time scales. You will develop the ability to analyse and explain the complex interaction of surface processes relating to the variability of various aspects of the Earth’s surface.
  • In Geology of Basins, you will study the processes steering the genesis and evolution of sedimentary basins and the surrounding areas. Special attention is given to sedimentary fluxes, the spatial organisation of basins, the evolution of the paleoenvironment, dating of events and exploration strategies. You will develop the ability to analyse and explain the complexity of interacting processes that determine the evolution of sedimentary basins.
  • In Soil and Groundwater, you will study hydrogeological and pedological characteristics and processes with a focus on fundamental and applied aspects of soils and groundwater, including the response to external influences and aimed at sustainable management and protection of these resources. You will develop the attitude to analyse and explain the complexity of physical and chemical processes influencing soil and groundwater, and to come up with remedial measures. 

Departments

The programme is firmly rooted in the research of the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences (KU Leuven) and the Department of Geology (Ghent University). Both departments continuously develop and maintain innovative and widely recognised research programmes on fundamental and applied aspects of geoscience. The course is divided into two parts. The first part comprises of the lecture, workshop, practical and field work elements of the course, followed by a five-month independent research project. The course is a mixture of taught units and research project covering topics including site investigation, soil mechanics and rock mechanics, geotechnical engineering design, contaminated land, slope stability and rock engineering.

Here are the units you will study:

Rock and Soil Mechanics: These topics are integral to the role of an engineering geologist. You will gain an advanced understanding of the geo-mechanical behaviour of rocks and soils and how they behave under different geotechnical design scenarios. You will also develop key skills in the assessment, description and testing of geological materials in order to understand and quantify their behaviour, using current British and Eurocode standards.

Soil and Rock Engineering: This unit will give you an advanced understanding of engineering and design in soils and rock masses, including fundamental design principles associated with common geotechnical solutions encountered on engineering geological and civil engineering projects.

Contaminated Land and Groundwater: These are important considerations in all types of construction and so an understanding of both is essential. You will learn key techniques for the identification and assessment of contaminated land and groundwater resources in an engineering geological context.

Ground Models: You will train in the development of geological ground models and geomorphological terrain models within the content of engineering geological practice, essential parts of any investigation.

Ground Investigation Techniques: You will gain advanced experience of ground investigation using invasive techniques, in-situ tests and geophysical methods – essential to an engineering geologist's skill base.

Landslides and Slope Instability: On this unit you will develop an advanced understanding of landslide systems, types of slides in soils and rocks and methods for identification and numerical analysis.

Field Reconnaissance and Geomorphological Mapping: The techniques covered on this unit are integral to the course and an essential skill for any graduate wishing to work in this area. You will have fieldwork training in techniques such as geomorphological mapping and walk-over surveys combined with interpretation of remote sensing and aerial photography imagery.

Spatial Analysis and Remote Sensing: On this unit you will cover the key tools for terrain evaluation and be trained in the acquisition and interpretation of aerial photography and satellite imagery, and the integration and analysis of spatial datasets using GIS.

Independent Research Project: This give you the opportunity to undertake an original piece of research to academic or industrial standards, typically in collaboration with research staff in the department or external industry partners. In addition to submission of a thesis report, you also present the results of your project at the annual postgraduate conference held at the end of September.

Another related complementary course is our MSc Offshore Oil and Gas Engineering which is aimed at students who wish to work in the Oil and Gas Industry with particular focus on offshore operations such as exploration, drilling and production. An advantage of these two courses is that they are designed to have the same first four stage 1 modules introducing the Oil and Gas industry so that students, having gained more understanding of the industry, can compare the courses and swap between courses during stage 1, as they decide which course they would prefer to follow in stage 2. This flexible approach offers students the advantage of more choice during their study.

COURSE SUMMARY

This course is designed for engineering graduates who intend to enter or enhance their career prospects in the oil or natural gas industry. It will be re-accredited by the IGEM in 2016.

The course explores the geology, exploration, drilling, production (surface and subsurface), reservoir engineering and management, distribution and transmission of oil and gas from practical and theoretical viewpoints.

You will develop the knowledge and the skills for problem solving in terms of development, design, business and economics management in oil and gas engineering which will assist you to make management and scientific decisions in the workplace.

On completion of this course you may be eligible to join the Institution of Gas Engineers & Managers or Society of Petroleum Engineers which may enable you to qualify as a Chartered Engineer.

COURSE DETAILS

As well as studying the topics outlined in the following modules you will be expected to develop, to a professional standard, a number of transferable skills such as numeracy skills by way of quantitative mathematical analysis, problem solving skills, communication skills during group work, laboratory report writing and time management skills.

ASSESSMENT

Petroleum and Gas Engineering students are required to attend all of the modules. There are seven examination sessions. Students must pass all the modules studied with an overall average of at least 50% in the module programmes and in the course assessed work.

All laboratory and course assessed work must be submitted on time and to the required standard.

Students admitted to the course at Diploma level with examination and coursework of 50 % may proceed to MSc level. (120 Credits)

MSc Students must undertake a dissertation (60 Credits) on any aspect of the natural gas business either experimentally or computationally. The project can frequently relate to research work already in the school and or natural gas engineering and management.

A comprehensive course
This comprehensive course combines academic and practical teaching to prepare you for, or further, your career in the petroleum industry. Having received accreditation from the Geological Society of London, you can be confident that the course is topical and well regarded across the sector.

If you’re an international student, you must apply for the full masters course and study it over one year, starting in September. If you’re a UK or EU resident, you can study full-time or part-time. Modules are offered in four-week blocks to allow short periods of study leave from work.
Experienced teachers
Our tutors all have extensive experience and will give you a real insight into the oil industry. Teaching takes place in the classroom, laboratory, and in the field. You’ll also receive professional training to make sure your communication skills are up to industry standards.

Learning stages
The Postgraduate Certificate stage is an intensive 12-week course taught in the Autumn semester. The high degree of industry involvement means that you’ll benefit from the latest thinking in the areas of petroleum geology, petroleum techniques, and geological and commercial risk. Because it’s a short course, UK/EU students may choose to leave after gaining the Certificate and apply for entry-level work.

Alternatively, you can take the three Postgraduate Diploma modules in sequence in the Spring semester and then move on to the Independent Project for your MSc in May. If you choose to study part-time, you’ll need to be in Derby for four-week periods for each module.

The MSc stage will give you specialist knowledge and experience, because your independent project will involve working with data to address a current industry issue. You can study full-time for four months at Derby during the summer semester, or part-time while you work.
