This MSc is aimed at students who wish to pursue a geosciences-related career in the future energy sector, as it transitions from fossil fuels to a low carbon economy. The aim is to offer a programme that uses subsurface (geological) knowledge opening a diverse range of career pathways in lower carbon geoenergy technologies; the disposal of energy-related wastes and the hydrocarbon industry.
This MSc programme builds on the strength and reputation of the research groups operating in the School of GeoSciences on uses of the subsurface: carbon capture and storage (CCS); radioactive waste disposal; energy storage and extraction; unconventional and conventional hydrocarbons; wet and dry geothermal heat; and subsurface fluid tracing using noble gases and stable isotopes.

This programme will train students in the use of subsurface geological knowledge opening a diverse range of career pathways in lower carbon geoenergy technologies and the disposal of energy-related wastes. Other pathways include working in environmental and regulatory aspects of energy storage involving potential pollution; tracking subsurface fluids in the event of leakage from subsurface facilities and ground water resources.

This taught Masters Course will provide an ideal opportunity to get ‘hands-on’ experience with subsurface and related data, to acquire the necessary technical knowledge and transferrable skills, and to interact and work closely with fellow students and staff, all within a highly supportive environment. The course will reflect the multi-disciplinary nature of petroleum geoscience, with coursework extending from the geological and geophysical through to reservoir engineering, along with very significant components of fieldwork and practical experience of industry-style work. It is anticipated that the course will act as focal point for industry recruitment, with co-opted industry instructors contributing to some modules, presenting case studies and attending and participating in some of the field courses.

Both departments continuously develop and maintain innovative and widely recognised research programmes on fundamental and applied aspects of geoscience. As a Master in Geology you may be involved in development tasks, research or management functions. This course is designed for engineering graduates who intend to enter or enhance their career prospects in the oil or natural gas industry. It will be re-accredited by the IGEM in 2016.
The course explores the geology, exploration, drilling, production (surface and subsurface), reservoir engineering and management, distribution and transmission of oil and gas from practical and theoretical viewpoints.
You will develop the knowledge and the skills for problem solving in terms of development, design, business and economics management in oil and gas engineering which will assist you to make management and scientific decisions in the workplace.
On completion of this course you may be eligible to join the Institution of Gas Engineers & Managers or Society of Petroleum Engineers which may enable you to qualify as a Chartered Engineer.

Petroleum and Gas Engineering students are required to attend all of the modules. There are seven examination sessions. Students must pass all the modules studied with an overall average of at least 50% in the module programmes and in the course assessed work.
All laboratory and course assessed work must be submitted on time and to the required standard.
Students admitted to the course at Diploma level with examination and coursework of 50 % may proceed to MSc level. (120 Credits)
MSc Students must undertake a dissertation (60 Credits) on any aspect of the natural gas business either experimentally or computationally. The project can frequently relate to research work already in the school and or natural gas engineering and management.

This course is offered online with each module running with tutor support for a three month period during the academic year, and available the rest of the time for preview and revision.
