This course is designed to provide you with a high level education in Stylistics, taught by a strong team of leading scholars in the field.

It covers a range of topics based on staff expertise, including critical, cognitive, corpus and experimental stylistics. You will be given the chance to engage with cutting-edge research in your area, as well as to develop skills in common methodologies for stylistic analysis, such as corpus linguistics.

All of the modules on this course are taught by a new ‘block delivery’ method which allows you to come to Huddersfield for intensive teaching three times a year and spend the remaining weeks elsewhere if it suits your work/life situation. But if you wish to participate in the life of Linguistics at Huddersfield all year round there are many activities you can get involved with between the intensive weeks of teaching.

Your studies are led by experts who are renowned nationally and internationally for their excellence in teaching and research. In the recent Research Assessment Exercise, 20% of our overall submission was said to be 'world leading' and 53% to be internationally excellent'. (Research Excellence Framework 2014).

We have a vibrant research community of both national and international students. We regularly host conferences which reflect the research interests of our academic staff, and research seminars by our own students, staff and visiting guest speakers. This programme will equip you with Arabic-English and/or English-Arabic translation skills for different types of texts, as well as an understanding of the theory underpinning your practice.

You’ll work with a range of text types, including journalistic, administrative, technical and literary texts. You’ll also deepen your knowledge of methods, approaches and concepts in translation studies.

You’ll also choose optional modules that suit your interests and career aspirations, on issues in translation and language more generally, such as Arabic/English stylistics, translation for international organisations, computer-assisted translation, applied linguistics and genre analysis.

Taught by expert researchers and contracted practitioners, this programme makes use of the expertise across the Centre for Translation Studies and Arabic, Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies within the School of Languages, Cultures and Societies. It’s a great opportunity to learn valuable skills in a city full of cultural and linguistic diversity.

Specialist facilities

We have excellent facilities and resources to support your studies. Our Electronic Resources and Information Centre (ERIC) supports all of our translation programmes, complete with 59 high-spec PCs and a wide range of specialist software for translation and subtitling.

The Centre for Translation Studies is also constantly compiling and updating very large corpora of texts in digital form so you can analyse source texts and produce more idiomatic translations. If you want to try your hand at interpreting, you will have the option to do so in our state-of-the-art conference suites.

This programme is also available to study part-time over 24 months.

Course content

Throughout the programme you’ll develop your understanding of theories, approaches and methods in translation studies through a core module. You’ll then apply that knowledge in your specialised translation modules, when you’ll gain the intercultural skills to make sound translation decisions and build skills in computer-assisted translation.

You’ll complete the course with your choice from a range of optional modules to suit your interests and career plans. You could expand your knowledge of translation by studying translation for international organisations, comparative Arabic/English stylistics, or explore broader topics such as genre analysis in translation or different aspects of applied linguistics like language acquisition or syntax.

By the end of the course in September, you’ll submit work which showcases the skills you’ve acquired – this could be a long translation, long dissertation or shorter versions of both.

If you choose to study part-time, you’ll take fewer modules in each year and study over a longer period.

Learning and teaching

We use different teaching methods to help you develop a range of practical skills as well as a sound theoretical knowledge base. These include lectures and seminars, as well as practical classes where you’ll make the most of our facilities.

In addition, the Centre for Translation Studies and Arabic, Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies run a regular programme of Research and Professionalisation Talks from visiting speakers, many of whom are actually practicing translators, interpreters, subtitlers or project managers.

Assessment

You’ll be assessed using a wide range of methods. Translation tests are an important element, as areessays and individual and team projects. You’ll also be assessed on yourindividual summer project, which can be either a long annotated translation, a long dissertation, or a combination of a short annotated translation and short dissertation.

Career opportunities

This programme will equip you with practical translation skills between two major world languages which are increasingly valuable to a wide range of employers across industries.

It’s excellent preparation for working in fields where Arabic is a working language, or where translation in and out of Arabic is needed. These include foreign diplomacy, the media, NGOs and international organisations, the travel and tourism sector, teaching and areas of the publishing, cultural and marketing industries.

Other graduates progress to PhD research, or work as specialised freelance translators.

The MA by Research programme requires you to prepare a dissertation of up to 40,000 words on a topic of your choice, for which an academic staff member will provide expert supervision.

Corpus Linguistics

The University of Birmingham is one of the world’s leading centres for research in corpus linguistics.

Our research is characterised by a strong cross-disciplinary reach with a particular focus on corpus-based approaches to literary stylistics, discourse analysis, critical discourse analysis, second language acquisition, specialised discourses, psycholinguistics, cognitive linguistics, historical linguistics and statistics.

Cognitive Linguistics and Psycholinguistics

Our research expertise in cognitive linguistics and psycholinguistics includes figurative language, idioms, embodied cognition, language and perception, sign language, gesture, second language acquisition and construction grammar.

Our current research projects are designed to ensure that the work we conduct has a significant impact on the lives of people outside academia. This includes the role played by metaphor and other types of figurative language in advertising and the ways in which it is understood by people from different cultures. We are also working on a Global Challenges project which explores the use of metaphor by people who have experienced pregnancy loss or stillbirth (and those who support them).

Stylistics and Discourse Analysis

Our research expertise includes the impact that gender, institution, and nationality have on the dominant patterns of form and function in various kinds of discourse. We have particular strengths in the analysis of academic, workplace and professional discourse and the application of this.

Our research often combines discourse analysis with corpus analytic methods. Ongoing projects reflect our interdisciplinary and intradisciplinary work, including research into language of the media, education, the language of evaluation and embodied interaction. We also have a long tradition of work in literary stylistics (especially of prose fiction) and narratology.

The MA in Linguistics at Kent offers an excellent opportunity to explore the broad spectrum of linguistics and its sub-disciplines.

The programme is designed for graduates with a background in language and related areas (for example, English, Modern or Classical Languages, Linguistics, Psychology, Anthropology), looking to explore the theory and methodology of linguistics in-depth, from the study of sound (phonetics and phonology) to the study of words (morphology), sentences (syntax) and meaning (semantics and pragmatics). It draws upon the considerable expertise of staff in the Department of English Language & Linguistics.

Students choose four modules each in the Autumn and Spring terms, including core modules on Sounds, Structure, and Meaning, supplemented with options on, for example, psycholinguistics, language acquisition, language learning and teaching, sociolinguistics and stylistics, which allow students to develop areas of interest, and engage with aspects of their chosen discipline which are informed by the latest research and scholarship. They then complete a research dissertation of up to 15,000 words over the summer.

The programme is ideal for those with a keen interest in language in the broadest sense, and a willingness to explore theories of language critically. The programme also offers a smooth transition to doctoral work for those who wish to pursue their studies further.

About the Department of English Language and Linguistics

English Language and Linguistics (ELL), founded in 2010, is the newest department of the School of European Culture and Languages (SECL). ELL is a dynamic and growing department with a vibrant research culture. We specialise in experimental and theoretical linguistics. In particular, our interests focus on quantitative and experimental research in speech and language processing, variation and acquisition, but also cover formal areas such as syntax, as well as literary stylistics. In addition to English and its varieties, our staff work in French, German, Greek, Romani, Korean, Spanish and Russian.

Staff and postgraduates are members of the Centre for Language and Linguistic Studies (CLLS), a research centre that seeks to promote interdisciplinary linguistic research. We also have links with research networks outside Kent, and are involved with national and international academic associations including the Linguistics Association of Great Britain, the British Association of Academic Phoneticians, the Linguistic Society of America, the Association for French Language Studies and the Poetics and Linguistics Association.

Course structure

The programme comprises eight 15-credit modules.

The four core modules, Sounds, Meaning, Structure and Research Skills, provide you with a solid grounding in linguistic theory and methodology, while a range of optional modules either develop themes covered in the core module, or explore the relationship between language and other disciplines, such as literature (stylistics), the mind (psycholinguistics), and society (sociolinguistics).

Teaching in the MA in Linguistics takes the form of lectures, tutor-led and student-led seminars and tutorials, as well as problem-based workshops allowing students to engage with linguistic data and theory. You also have the opportunity to attend subject-related conferences and talks by visiting speakers.

Assessment

Assessment consists of a combination of written coursework, practical/experimental work (where appropriate) and seminar presentations.

On successful completion of the taught modules, students write a 15,000-word research dissertation (included in their final grade) on a topic agreed with their supervisor.

Taught at our Parkgate Road Campus in Chester, our cutting-edge MA course is delivered by a dynamic team of linguists, each with their own research specialisms. What will I learn?

These core areas of study are supplemented with options which may include the role of English in education (e.g. phonics and grammar in the classroom), language and identity, language change and speech disorders.

How will I be taught?

In most modules you will attend a lecture and discuss ideas in smaller seminars and workshops.
Full-time MA contact hours are approximately four hours per week with 20 hours per week of additional independent study, during term time. Further contact hours with lecturers are in the form of dissertation supervision and personal tutorials.

How will I be assessed?

Assessments are tailored for each module and include exercises in grammar and phonetics/phonology, discourse analysis essays, seminar papers (including presentations), discursive essays, extended data collection and analysis projects, lesson plan and commentary, portfolio, and an extended thesis (dissertation). A successful dissertation is also an essential requirement. There are no exams.

This programme looks at language from a sociocultural perspective. It's designed for anyone with an interest in the relationship between language, culture and society but also provides a solid understanding of English language and linguistics.

The MA develops your understanding of historical and contemporary debates in (socio)linguistics and discourse analysis and enhances your analytic and linguistic skills by introducing different approaches to the analysis of written and spoken language use from a range of everyday and institutional contexts.

Option modules

You may choose two linguistic options or one linguistic option and one option from other MA programmes within the College, where specifically approved by the Programme Co-ordinator.

You may also choose one non-linguistics module, either from our own department (English and Comparative Literature) or from another department. Please note that availability of options across the College varies, but typically you can choose from the following selection.

Please note that your choice of option module from another department needs to be discussed with the Programme Co-ordinator of the MA Sociocultural Linguistics in advance. 

Dissertation

You also produce a dissertation. Dissertation topics in the past have included:

The best (UG or MA) linguistics dissertation is rewarded every year with the Hayley Davis Prize. 

Approach to teaching

Our lecture/seminar sessions are designed to combine discussions of preparatory reading materials with tutor-led input and hands-on analyses of data/texts by students. We also tend to invite guest lectures as part of option modules and GoldLingS Seminar Series.

Our MA group is usually very tight-knit, students and student reps organise study/revision groups, online discussion forums, outings to lectures across London, and a number of social events.

Skills

Transferable skills, including enhanced communication and discussion skills in written and oral contexts; the ability to analyse and evaluate a wide variety of spoken and written texts from informal as well as institutional settings; an understanding of the concept of communicative competence; the ability to organise information, and to assimilate and evaluate competing arguments.

This MA focuses on the description and explanation of the English language, including its structure, functions and social contexts of use. English language here refers to the study of English as an academic subject, not the practice of English.

It is designed to appeal to a wide audience (including U.K. teachers of the English Language A level).
Each of the six modules, spread over two years, begins with a Saturday face-to-face session at Lancaster University and is completed in distance mode. Assessment is via coursework.

The final year involves a dissertation supported by an individual supervisor.

The MA in English Language and Literary Studies is ideal for you if you would like to combine your studies of English Language with the study of literature and literary theory. This MA is taught jointly by the Department of Linguistics and English Language and the Department of English and Creative Writing, allowing a great deal of flexibility to follow your own interests.

It consists of six credit-bearing modules, including at least two from each department, at least one research methods course and a dissertation. Support for your studies is provided by the non-credit Postgraduate Academic Study Skills module, which runs in terms 1, 2 and 3.

It covers the core areas of linguistics (including phonetics, phonology, semantics, syntax) and reflects staff specialisms (including prosody, clinical and corpus linguistics, critical discourse analysis, stylistics). The course is suited to English Language and/or Linguistics graduates who wish to pursue advanced-level study either as an end in itself or as preparation for a PhD. This is a student-driven course for those who would like to take a master’s degree either as preparation to studying at PhD level or to gain research skills and knowledge of a specific area of English studies for professional development.

This course enables you to research an aspect of English literature (Renaissance to the present), language, critical theory or a combination of these, as well as develop skills as a researcher and specialist in your area. You work towards the submission of a 30,000 word dissertation, on a topic agreed between you and your supervisors. It is also ideal for those who want to pursue a specific topic or research area in detail.

Current staff research interests can be seen in our staff pages and includes work on • digital humanities • science and literature • law and literature • children’s literature • sentimental literature • the short story • multiculturalism in literature and language • politeness, gender and sexuality • social interaction • literary linguistics • dialectology • pragmatics and stylistics.

The English department has expertise in the following areas

You are supported by an experienced supervisory team with expertise in your chosen area of study who will work with you on a one-to-one basis. They guide you through the course, including providing the necessary research tools and skills. Initial discussion between you and your supervisor establishes the focus and scope of the topic, and confirms the research questions to be addressed.

The supervisor helps you to conduct a literature survey, and engage with theoretical, methodological and critical issues relating to the topic. You are also be encouraged to attend workshops on research methods and approaches relevant to your project.

The course is designed as a flexible degree for those who need to combine work and professional development. Supervision sessions are arranged individually with your supervisory team ensuring that content is tailored to your individual needs.

This course is designed to develop your knowledge of how language works, in particular the English language, enabling you to describe and analyse English and other languages with accuracy and insight.

You’ll gain a solid understanding of phonetics and phonology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics, and explore how that knowledge can be applied to the practical analysis of spoken and written, literary and non-literary texts.

We place particular emphasis on analysing language in real-world contexts. Modules reflect staff expertise, which means you have the opportunity to engage with cutting-edge research in your area of interest.

We have a vibrant research community of national and international students, who often collaborate on projects and present their work within the supportive environment of our annual postgraduate conference. We hold a regular research seminar programme, with presentations by staff, students and visiting guest speakers, and organise and host conferences reflecting our own research interests.

Our staff have links with scholars at many top-ranking universities worldwide, from the United States of America to the Far East. Members of staff are on the committees of significant professional organisations such as PALA – the Poetics and Linguistics Association, and edit major journals such as the internationally reputed peer-reviewed academic journal East Asian Pragmatics and the leading stylistics journal, Language and Literature.
