This course is suitable for anyone with a first degree in any subject who wants to be a firstclass magazine journalist. Students must have excellent general knowledge and be prepared to work across print and digital platforms with a variety of content. Students will have passion for communicating in words and pictures - and an appetite for fun and hard work is essential.

Objectives

This hugely successful, well-established course will prepare you for a broad range of magazine scenarios, from writing for a glossy men’s magazine; to researching a story for an online business-to-business publication; to reviewing a play for a national newspaper supplement and much in between.

You'll learn the essential skills of reporting, feature writing, subbing, interviewing, researching, and design and layout. You'll produce print and online magazines, and complete at least seven weeks' work experience.

The course will give you a thorough grounding in print and multimedia journalism. You will develop professional skills in reporting, interviewing, research, feature writing and production (print and online), benefitting from the experience of leading magazine and specialist journalists and around 30 visiting editors, commissioning editors and editorial directors from the UK’s leading publishing houses.

Graduates from the course have won the Professional Publishers Association’s ‘Most Promising Postgraduate Student of the Year’ for the last nine years.

We have been running Journalism courses at City since 1976. In the years since, over 5,000 students have graduated and are now working in the media in the UK and internationally.

Academic facilities

You will gain practical skills in our state-of-the-art digital television studio, digital editing suites, radio studios and broadcast newsrooms.

In 2014 we completed a £12m development projects for our Journalism facilities. These facilities were developed in consultation with experts from the BBC and ITN, and were praised by the BJTC. Our facilities include:
-A television studio: enabling simultaneous multi-media broadcast and a major expansion in the number of news and current affairs programmes produced.
-Four radio studios: enabling an increase in output and the potential to explore a permanent radio station.
-Two radio broadcast newsrooms: high-tech facilities that enable you to learn how to produce a radio programme.
-Two digital newsrooms: impressive modern facilities that enable you to learn the skills required to produce newspapers, magazines and websites.
-Two TV editing and production newsrooms: state-of-the-art facilities that enable you to learn about TV production.

Placements

Work placements are an integral part of all Journalism MA courses, giving you the chance to put your learning into practice and, more importantly, make contacts in the industry. You are encouraged to seek work experience while you study on this course.

Teaching and learning

Some modules are taught in lecture theatres, but most are small-group workshops that allow you to develop your journalistic skills and knowledge with the support of our expert academics.

Our students have the option of taking part in a Teeline shorthand course alongside their studies. This costs £100 (refundable if you reach 100 words per minute) and runs across two terms.

Assessment

All MA Journalism courses at City are practical, hands-on courses designed for aspiring journalists. As a result, much of your coursework will be journalistic assignments that you produce to deadline, as you would in a real news organisation.

Assessment is part of learning, and course assessments vary to reflect the learning being achieved. They include workshop exercises, studio work, oral presentations, essays, reflections, exams and production (making journalism products), and different forms (written, oral, visual, aural), as well as being individual and team-based.

The magazine industry has never been more exciting and challenging. This course prepares you for the exciting world of magazines which may be more varied than you imagine - whether it's writing a feature for a glossy men's magazine, podcasting an interview, or researching and crafting a story for the newsdesk of a business-to-business publication.

The strength of the Master in Fashion Communication and Styling is the combination of theoretical contents, analysis and study of the manufacturers of the most successful fashion, and practical activities, carried out in collaboration with companies and industry professional practitioners in an international context.

The course aims to form a Fashion Communication Coordinator, a professional able to create and carry on a communication strategy for a fashion brand. Since the visual communication of the brand has now become essential, the course gives special emphasis to the study of styling, elaborated by practical exercises, designed to represent the market values and the aesthetics of the brand effectively.

The fashion communication expert must have a good understanding of the trends of a particular sector of the market, being able to develop new techniques of dissemination of information and to manage communication processes typical of the fashion world.

After an initial study of the fashion industry from an historical, cultural and visual perspective, participants acquire knowledge about the communication process of fashion: from the structure of a press office with his organization and its activities, to the organization and management of a fashion show as a moment of visibility and strengthening of a brand identity up to the publishing world and events.

The teaching methodology examines the communication through different media and forms of expression linked to them (publishing, styling, web, new media, advertising, corporate events).

Part of the course is dedicated to the activities of the stylist: from the structure of a photographic set - organization, technical tools for professional photography and the lights, the still life study - to the iconographic research. The realization of photographic services allows participants to gain experience in the field, applying the theoretical knowledge and practical tools acquired during the course.

The Master culminates in a presentation of the final project, a summary of all the classes in which the student develops the insights gained during the educational pathway.

Course Overview

The Contemporary Dialogues portfolio offers an exciting and innovative re-thinking of Postgraduate provision that reflects the strategic thinking of Swansea College of Art. The portfolio facilitates migration between diverse thematic disciplines, exploring new ideas and conceptual approaches to allow young artists and designers to confront the issues that face society today and into the future.

The portfolio’s ethos of collaborative dialogues through material practices provides an innovative model of design, fine and applied arts education. This development allows students from all pathways to experience and share creative practices and innovative mind-sets through inter-disciplinary and trans-disciplinary dialogues. The main modes of assessment used on this programme are; studio projects, written assignments and seminar presentations.

Assessment at postgraduate level is reflected by your ability to reformulate and use relevant methodologies and approaches to address problematic situations that involve many interacting factors. It includes taking responsibility for planning and developing courses of action that initiate or underpin substantial change or development, as well as exercising broad autonomy and judgement. We strive to ensure a sustainable future in Surface Pattern for our graduates through a rigorous programme underpinned by skills in employability, creative enterprise and professional studies.

There are opportunities to undertake work placements and address live briefs. Most recently our students have completed briefs with M&S, Tigerprint, Hallmark and Freshwest design companies.

Students are encouraged to establish links with industry and engage in collaborative projects. There is also the option to study abroad with the Erasmus programmes currently running with Universities in Barcelona, Norway and Sweden.

The programme has an excellent track record in design competitions, awards and industry events such as Indigo (Paris) and New Designers.

Graduates from the Surface Pattern programmes have been extremely successful and continue to be recruited in a highly competitive market. Employment roles for graduates from the programme are varied and wide reaching and include:

Freelance working for textiles for fashion studio, fashion brands, designers, retail, interiors studios, on bespoke commissions for clients, producing own name products, large-scale design retail operation. Also formal employment as textiles designer, designer within design brand or retail operation, Stylist, Trend forecasting, Buyer for design related operations, Visual Merchandising.
