Course Content

Master of Information Technology students will undertake a coherent programme of 180 credits approved by the programme manager and will follow one of two pathways.

Pathway 1

The first pathway is designed for students who want to undertake more course work and consists of four compulsory components:

- IT801 Managing ICT Projects and Systems
The student will develop knowledge and skills in managing ICT projects and systems. The student will also research into established frameworks that are relevant to current industry trends.
- IT802 Researching ICT Issues and Trends
The student will develop knowledge and skills in critiquing and undertaking research, assessing social impacts of ICT and analysing ethical issues in ICT practice.
- IT803 Research Proposal
The student will develop expertise in preparing research proposals, including reviewing relevant literature, selecting a methodology and exploring ethical issues.

Building Service Engineers help buildings to deliver on their potential by working with architects and construction engineers to produce buildings that offer the functionality and comfort we expect, with the minimum impact on our environment. They design the lighting appropriate for the space, the heating, cooling, ventilation and all systems that ensure comfort, health and safety in all types of buildings, residential commercial and industrial.

Building services engineering is an interdisciplinary profession. It involves the specification, design, installation and management of all the engineering services associated with the built environment.

With the growing complexity of engineering services in modern buildings and the significance of energy conservation and pollution control, the role of the building services engineer is becoming increasingly important.

As an interdisciplinary profession that involves the specification, design, installation and management of all the engineering services associated with the built environment, comfort and function also need to be combined – which calls for engineers with a wide range of knowledge and skills.

This MSc programme is for:

Recent engineering and technology graduates, moving into building services and related disciplines.

Energy Conversion Technologies
This element provides a broad introduction to the principles of energy conversion and thermodynamic machines and demonstrates their application to energy conversion and management in buildings. Emphasis is placed on refrigeration plant, energy conversion plant and energy management.
Refrigeration covers the basic principles and components of vapour compression systems, heat pumps and absorption systems.
Energy Conversion considers power cycles, combined heat and power, combustion processes, boiler plant, thermal energy storage and environmental impacts of plant operation.

Theme B - Renewable

Renewable Energy Technologies
This element includes: energy sources, economics and environmental impact, energy storage technologies, the role of renewables, solar thermal, solar electricity, wind power generation, hydro, tidal and wave power, biofuels, building integrated renewables.

The programme is taught via online learning by dedicated staff, experienced in guiding UK and international students through the programme via distance learning. Distance learning students will have access to our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) and have

Induction
It takes time for learners to get familiar with learning online and to get to know each other enough to fully participate. Part of the tutor’s role is introducing the different learning technologies and online learning practices to learners. The MA Education TESOL is a level 7 Masters level course that will be delivered full time over one year.

Core modules bear thirty credits each and include Methodology 1 & 2, Teaching English to Young Learners and English for Specific Purposes. The Methodology modules will provide an in depth study of the various methods that are used in current practice in English Language Teaching. Teaching English to Young Learners explores the pedagogical features of Teaching English to children and teenagers. The English for Specific Purposes module examines the theoretical basis for Specific Purposes in a variety of contexts including English for Academic Purposes, business English and English for Educational, Medical and Industry Professionals. There is also an addition​al non-credit bearing module on Research methods and dissertation preparation.

On this two year, part-time course we develop capable and resourceful public service managers with the skills to make evidence based decisions, take the lead on initiatives, collaborate with external agencies and solve complex problems within and across organisational boundaries. From the outset students will receive individual support in engaging with masters level study and are enabled to explore particular topics that are of personal interest to them. Every LMPS student has a personal tutor, typically a module leader, who will retain a mentoring role for the student throughout their studies. With support from their personal tutor students develop a personal ‘learning action plan’ which is intended to guide their studies on the LMPS programme.

About the course

The exploration of conceptual issues concerned with public service management is balanced with the development of practical skills concerned with the management of people, resources and change. This course has a strong focus on leadership, with each taught module exploring the challenges associated with leading public services from a different perspective. The diagram below provides an overview of the programme structure. Modules from the ‘concept’ and ‘technique’ blocks are classroom based whereas modules form the ‘research block’ are student led, supported by one-to-one tutoring and offering flexibility in terms of pace and topics of study.

Teaching and assessment encourages meaningful learning by applying theory to situations students encounter in their work environments. The assessment strategy ranges from written coursework assignments, to online examinations, in-class tests and practical exercises. Practical assessments include the use of techniques such as the ‘Learning Conversation’ where a structured dialogue between teacher and student is recorded and then assessed, as well as student led discussion sessions, seminars or presentations. Classes take place on three Fridays and Saturdays per semester and class sizes are typically around 12 – 20 students.

Teaching methods

We are constantly developing and refining our class room techniques. Class sizes are typically between 12 – 16 students which allows us to use a wide range of teaching and learning methods. These range from experiential learning techniques where delivery of content responds to student’s experience and class discussion, for example in our leadership and coaching skills modules. In other subjects, such as project management or performance management there is an emphasis on learning particular techniques or concepts and applying these to case studies. Whatever the topic, all our modules are delivered in an interactive way and based on contemporary approaches to teaching and learning as promoted by the Higher Education Academy.

In addition to group based learning in the classroom our students receive detailed one-to-one supervision during their individual research project. An academic member of staff supports the student in the development of research questions, the development of appropriate data collection and data analysis tools and the identification of relevant literature on the chosen topic.

Facilities

All masters students have access to a wide range of building simulation codes which include commercial software, as well as bespoke codes developed in-house. Students can run these codes on their personal laptops or access any one of our computer laboratories, including access to our recently commissioned 2000-node high performance computer cluster.

One of our key strengths at Loughborough is our experimental facilities which enable us to validate computer models. Our masters students have access to a vast range of experimental facilities, some of which are used during the taught modules and all of which are available for use by students during their research dissertations.

How you will learn

You will learn through a carefully balanced combination of lectures, in-class guided workshops, hands-on computer modelling, field measurements and independent research. Students have access to a wide range of air flow and thermal modelling software as wells as extensive laboratory facilities. Following nine taught modules, students pursue a research dissertation of their choice which draws on the skills developed during the taught modules.

Students are assessed by a combination of traditional written exams, coursework and assignments. This split is typically 70/30 (exam/coursework) or 50/50, although some modules, such as research methods and concept design are assessed entirely based on coursework which comprises individual presentations and group work.

Scholarships

The University offers over 100 scholarships each year to new self-financing full-time international students who are permanently resident in a county outside the European Union. These Scholarships are to the value of 25% of the programme tuition fee and that value will be credited to the student’s tuition fee account.

Course structure

An innovative alternative to a MBA, this one-year, full-time course is designed for graduates of any subject with or without work experience. Case studies, live client projects, company visits and the option of paid work experience help prepare you for management by putting the latest academic thinking and business strategies into practice.

Teaching takes place over three terms, from late September to early June, with breaks after assessments in mid-December to early January and late March to mid-April.

Class attendance averages 14 to 18 hours a week, plus time for group work and independent study, with variations as you progress through the course. There are some special intensive workshops on topics such as leadership, management and research, and a one-week tutor-led international study visit to companies in another European country.

COURSE SUMMARY

This course offers you an exciting opportunity to join one of the world’s most dynamic growth sectors, with relevance to areas including property, transport, shipping insurance, credit cards, wealth management and home and commercial mortgages.

The fast-paced subject of financial services management also offers significant opportunities in banking and finance as these arenas have recognised the need to re-think their strategies. COURSE DETAILS

The programme is block delivered and there are six entry points per year.

This course will provide you with the appropriate advanced-level skills and knowledge you need to contribute to the growing and sophisticated international banking and finance industries.

On completion you will be able to place yourself favourably in a managerial or consulting role. You will be equipped with the skills and understanding necessary to effectively and efficiently perform tasks relevant to your organisation. You'll learn to develop your ability to work effectively in teams and independently, to evaluate critically, think creatively and communicate effectively with respect to issues in the industry; and to recognise good practice in the analysis, planning and management of international banking and finance products and services. You'll also develop an advanced level of understanding of research methods and their application to a wide range of international banking and finance problems.

TEACHING

The course is currently delivered in four blocks of three-day intensive study periods, followed by independent study and online support through the University’s virtual learning environment, Blackboard. Each module is taken and assessed over a six week block. 

From September 2017, this delivery format will change. Students will continue to study a single module for a 6 week period. Face to face teaching will be delivered on campus for two half days each week. In addition, you will attend the taught element of the Business Innovation Programme each Wednesday afternoon during the 6 week blocks, with independent study completed in your own time through Blackboard.  Individual student timetables will be provided during induction week.

ASSESSMENT

Over the duration of your course a range of assessment techniques will be used. Types of assessment include; essays, assignments, exams, multiple choice tests, online tests, group reports, and portfolio work. The weighting between exams and coursework varies between modules and years, but exams still play a major role.

In addition to a highly regarded formal qualification, you’ll gain personal and organisational management skills that will enhance your career prospects. Recent Salford Business School graduates have gained employment with organisations including Ernst & Young, British Airways, BMW, the NHS, BUPA and KPMG.

The global burden of disease and challenges of safe and accessible health services means that more than ever practitioners and researchers need skills for developing, testing, evaluating and implementing evidence-based health care in highly complex situations.

This programme provides you with the skills and knowledge to tackle these challenges.

You will be taught by a multi-disciplinary team of expert tutors and guest lecturers from a diverse range of clinical and research backgrounds, with a blend of tutorials, work-based training and research exchange visits. Topics such as patient and public involvement, collaborative working, evidence-based practice, complex interventions, health economics, clinical trials and medical statistics will provide a common thread that runs throughout the programme.

The programme has been designed to be flexible and well-defined with four integrated and mandatory modules (each 30 Masters level credits) plus a dissertation (60 Masters level credits) that can be studied on a part-time or full-time basis.

Course detail

Each student must complete a minimum of 30 credit hours. All students are required to complete satisfactorily a core curriculum composed of one graduate course in at least three of the four fields of anthropology:

- ANT 501 (Anthropological Linguistics);
- ANT 625 (Survey of the History of Archaeology);
- ANT 636 (Social Structure) or ANT 641 (Culture);
- and, ANT 670 (Principles of Physical Anthropology).

Additionally, a seminar in Research Methodology (ANT 600) is required.

These four core courses should be taken during the student’s first year in residence. Remaining credit hours are based on coursework in the student’s area of interest, and thesis hours for students taking the thesis option (see below).

Format and assessment

There are then three options for completing the degree. In a thesis option, the student writes a thesis based on original research. In the research paper option, the student either submits a paper for publication or presents a paper at a national meeting. In the non-thesis options, the student completes additional coursework. Any student interested in study beyond the master’s level should only take the thesis or research paper options.

All students must take and pass comprehensive examinations on their knowledge of the field of anthropology. The student will take three-hour written exams in at least three of the four subdisciplines. The selection of the three areas will be made in collaboration with the faculty advisor. All anthropology faculty will participate in composing the exam questions. The examinations are evaluated by the entire faculty of the department, and performance on the exam is certified by the student’s committee.

Admission

Entering students must provide evidence of having taken introductory-level courses in each of the four fields before taking the graduate courses. A student who has not had an introductory course may be required to take or audit the appropriate undergraduate course before enrolling in the graduate course.

Each student is required to demonstrate competency in either a foreign language or research skill (especially statistics).
