Course description

The MSc in Construction Project Management prepares students for a professional role in the management of construction projects by providing students with an understanding of both the people-related and technical requirements necessary for the successful management of projects, as well as the organisational and strategic aspects; it also stresses the project control mechanisms of resource management, budgeting and cost management, change control, contract management and information management.

This MSc is one of four MSc courses within the Management of Projects Group of Programmes. The other MSc courses are: Management of Projects, Commercial Project Management and Engineering Project Management.

The School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering has a long history of delivering project management related masters courses and the staff who deliver the programme are drawn for a wide variety of backgrounds and industrial experience.

Teaching and learning

The Construction Project Management MSc is a full time course which is studied over 12 months, starting in September each year. The course comprises eight taught course units, each worth 15 credits, and a research dissertation worth 60 credits. Students on this particular MSc study four core units fundamental to project management, and which are shared by students on the other MSc courses. In addition, the Construction Project Management Professional Practice unit is programme specific unit which is designed to simulate the major challenges to delivering a successful construction/civil engineering project through the medium of a `live' case study approach. Students must also select three option units and carry out a Construction Project Management based dissertation.

Assessment of the taught part of the programme is via a combination of formal written examinations and coursework assignments, which will include group work and oral presentations. Some assessment is based on online material provided by the Association for Project Management (APM) and PRINCE2 (a process-based method for effective project management).

Graduates of the Construction Project Management MSc are highly regarded by industry. The MSc in Construction Project Management is listed by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM) as an Approved Further Learning Scheme for Chartered Engineer. The JBM represents the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Institution of Structural Engineers, the Institution of Highways and Transportation and the Institute of Highway Incorporated Engineers. This means that successful completion of the MSc will enable applicants with an accredited first degree at BEng level to become chartered engineers.
The School has a Partnership arrangement with the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and this MSc is accredited by the RICS Project Management Faculty.

Our Structural Engineering postgraduate programme is delivered by the Faculty’s own staff, together with practising engineers from consultancies and local authorities.

For practising engineers engaged in the planning, design and construction of structural engineering works, this programme provides an opportunity to update their knowledge of current design practice and to become familiar with developments in codes and methods of analysis.

Engineering is at the core of a successful economy and the infrastructure it develops directly affects the wellbeing of its citizens and the environment. Skilled, qualified project managers have a key role in this vital work.

There are two main challenges facing the engineering and construction industry:

1. Clients are increasingly requiring contractors to deliver projects using limited resources, at low cost, in short duration and to a high level of quality and safety
2. Much existing infrastructure is under severe strain due to a legacy of inadequate maintenance and rapid population growth.

The course examines these commercial pressures and will provide opportunities for students to develop and demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:

- The principles of strategic planning and risk analysis in successful project and infrastructure management
- The theoretical basis for the organisation of project infrastructure development and how management of budgets, human resources and supply chains can affect overall project success

The taught element of the course includes eight modules which approximates to 150 learning hours. For full-time mode of study, the programme is taken over 12 months. Formal lectures are used to deliver course materials and are supported by structured seminars and problem solving sessions to develop your knowledge and cognitive skills. The lectures give a broad overview of the main concepts and principles you need to understand, providing you with a framework on which to build and expand your knowledge on through private studies.

The application of theory and strengthening of knowledge of taught material is achieved through computing sessions, field trips and group projects. The latter is aimed particularly at enhancing your teamwork skills.

Our well resourced computing laboratories allow you to develop your knowledge and experience of appropriate planning and management software packages - and to apply this to project and infrastructure management problems. You also have access to computers outside scheduled laboratory sessions to allow you to learn at your own pace and time.

Learning from real-world examples forms a significant part of the course. You will visit project sites to understand the challenges and solutions of modern engineering projects.

Our staff are active in research and maintain close contact with industry to ensure that course materials are up-to date with commercial needs. We also invite leading industry figures to the University as guest speakers.

You will also be allocated a personal tutor who will be available to provide academic and pastoral support during the whole duration of your course.

Assessment

Each of the taught modules is assessed either by formal examination, an assignment, or a balanced combination of the two. Methods of assessing assignments include essay, individual/group report, oral presentation and short test.

Information on assignments in terms of the aims, learning outcomes, assessment criteria and submissions requirements are clearly specified at the beginning of the academic year. Detailed feedback on assignment is provided to students to assist them in achieving the required learning outcomes.

The research project is assessed by dissertation and oral presentation. You will be assigned to a project supervisor who will provide you with a one-to-one supervision on your work. The research project gives you the opportunity to take what you have learnt and to explore and develop specific interests by applying it to your own piece of research, which makes it possibly the most fulfilling aspect of the course.

This MSc is one of four MSc courses within the Management of Projects Group of Programmes. The other MSc courses are: Commercial Project Management, Construction Project Management and Engineering Project Management.

Teaching and learning

The Management of Projects MSc is a full time course which is studied over 12 months, starting in September each year. The course comprises eight taught course units, each worth 15 credits, and a research dissertation worth 60 credits. In addition, the Applied Project Management unit is course-specific unit which uses simulation exercises supplemented by guest speakers to provide students with hands-on practical experience of managing a project throughout its life cycle. September entry students have a choice of management dissertation topics in addition to aerospace engineering projects, and January entry students have a choice of aerospace engineering projects.

Projects

To complete the MSc degree you must undertake a project worth 60 credits. This is an integral part of the MSc programme and many have a technical or business focus.

The project will integrate subject knowledge and skills that you acquire during the MSc programme. It is an important part of your MSc where you can apply your newly learned skills and show to future employers that you have been working on cutting edge projects relevant to the industry.

You can choose a topic from a list of MSc projects in Aeronautical Engineering or the Management portion of your degree. Alternatively, should you have your own idea for a project, department members are always open to discussion of topics.

Through a system of specialisations and electives, the subjects taught go beyond the classic business areas to deal with current topics and issues relevant to present global challenges. Students can opt for one of two specialisations:

International Management explores current issues in general international management as well as applied topics of concern in networked global business such as entrepreneurship or media.

International Tourism Management offers students the chance to study international challenges in a sector which is especially exposed to social and structural change and, at the same time, is highly networked internationally. This applies equally to domestic tourist operators competing on the internal German and European markets as much as to tourist companies active on the international stage.
The Berlin School of Economics and Law (BSEL) awards successful students on this programme the internationally recognised M.Sc. (Master of Science) in International Business Management.

Target Group
This postgraduate programme is designed for applicants from Germany and overseas with a first degree and at least one year of work experience. The programme is especially suitable, for example, for graduates in subjects closely related to business administration such as business informatics, business communication or media management who have attended state and private universities and are interested in a postgraduate degree in general international management.

Content

The programme is structured around 12 modules, each ending with an exam. The programme provides fundamental cross-sector and cross-functional skills and knowledge in international management. These facilitate an analytical problem-solving expertise allowing for cultural factors, and which can also support personal and career development. Creative solution finding in a team as part of the practice-based projects encourages thinking outside the box and, in this way, promotes successful project management.

Students complete a sequence of optional and compulsory modules, plus a final dissertation, before graduating with the 180 credit Master of Science degree.

This degree is your opportunity to establish or consolidate your career as a civil or structural design engineer. The course is accredited for the Further Learning Programme (formerly ‘Matching Sections’) at Chartered Engineer (CEng) level by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE), the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (CIHT), and the Institute of Highway Engineers (IHE).

There is also an opportunity for working professionals to progress towards CEng status through a tailor-made route. This will help you accelerate to the remaining steps of CEng status by working with your employer in the process. This is a unique feature of a Masters course and significantly reduces the period required to achieve Chartered status.

To provide the latest specialist knowledge and technical competence, all design-related modules are taught in accordance with the new structural Eurocodes. As well as developing your analytical and problem-solving skills, tuition covers project planning and contract management. Learning and teaching methods

The course is delivered in three major blocks that offer an intensive but flexible learning pattern, with two entry opportunities for applicants each year – February and September. You will learn through lectures, tutorials and seminars, as well as guest lectures and seminars with prominent industry experts. You will complete a research project using our excellent laboratory facilities and a dissertation on a chosen topic of interest.

Work Experience and Employment Prospects

On completion of this course, you will be able to develop a career as a structural engineer, technical manager, or research and development manager. These roles can be with leading international consultancies, contractors, national and local consulting companies, as well as international research and government organisations.

Assessment methods

Some modules are assessed through coursework, others by a combination of design projects and a formal examination. If you want to continue working in industry, you can apply to study individual modules as short courses on a day-release or block-delivery basis.

We’ve just completed a £130m investment programme in new buildings and facilities, including significant investment in the Faculty of Computing, Engineering and Science. The University has also announced a further investment of £28m ensure that you’re using equipment and software that is state-of-the-art and industry-standard, we continually evaluate our labs and teaching spaces and regularly re-fit and re-equip them. A recent refurbishment of a number of our Civil and Mechanical Engineering labs is part of this programme of continuous enhancement of our facilities.
