The tutoring team on Southampton Solent University’s MA Creative Enterprise programme believe that the best way to learn freelance and enterprise skills is to get involved with real commercial projects.

Our established industry links and on-site creative agency provide students with access to these projects, where they will be expected to take full responsibility for managing the client, communicating successfully and delivering projects to budget. The online executive MBA is a challenging and demanding program designed to accelerate the careers of mature, high-performance professionals with significant business experience, unlike traditional MBA programs which are geared primarily toward a less experienced audience. The online program, delivered via distance learning, covers the same rigorous curriculum as the on campus EMBA.

The program is ideal for creative, innovative individuals who have gained experience in the workforce. Students master executive skills such as strategic and cross–functional thinking and leadership. The executive MBA is an integrated, 15-month, cohort-based program designed to develop future leaders and general managers in organizations serious about improving customer satisfaction, product quality, and organizational success.

A team of faculty and executives from all sectors of business and industry designed the program for professionals with substantial career experience. Through the use of practical approaches to improving business results and increasing personal productivity, participants will:

- strengthen their leadership and interactive skills by collaborating with teams of professional peers and faculty;

- develop strategic perspectives consistent with the needs of customers, stockholders, employees, the community, and other organizational stakeholders;

- apply cross-functional approaches to enhance their analytical and decision-making capabilities; and

- obtain a solid foundation in the functional areas of business.

Students must have a minimum of six years of professional work experience. Participants work in teams, studying a curriculum that focuses on developing general management skills with a strategic focus. The program is structured in an interactive fashion, with an emphasis on cross-functional integration.

Plan of study

The program consists of 15 months of alternating weekends (all day Fridays and Saturdays), a one-week on-campus session, and a one-week international study trip.

The curriculum focuses on core business concepts, providing fundamental skills, knowledge, and perspectives in accounting, statistics, leadership, finance, and economics. The program develops skills in cross-functional analysis with an emphasis on strategy, marketing, technology, and international business. Interdisciplinary examples, case analyses, and an applied orientation are key components of the program.

Study is through a blended learning approach. For each module there are typically two study days attended on campus (alternative arrangements may be possible for distance students), weekly one hour tutorials in a virtual learning environment, and ongoing tutor support.

Assessment

The three main modes of assessment used on this programme are: studio projects, written assignments and seminar presentations The taught modules in Part 1 are assessed through a combination of these modes of assessment. Part 2 is assessed through the submission of either a practice biased project & report or a theoretical dissertation of not more than 15,000 words.

Assessment at postgraduate level is reflected by your ability to reformulate and use relevant methodologies and approaches to address problematic situations that involve many interacting factors. It includes taking responsibility for planning and developing courses of action that initiate or underpin substantial change or development, as well as exercising broad autonomy and judgement. Look around you and you will see examples of the power of brands - on the High Street, within organisations and in the media. From Coca Cola to Virgin, the most successful brands are worth billions.

This MA course focuses on the role of visual identity within branding. The aim is to produce versatile and creative practitioners who understand design within a business, social and cultural context.

It addresses the subject from a broad perspective, covering individual, group, cultural, national, international, corporate and commercial identities. You will be encouraged to look critically at the graphic elements which make up a contemporary visual identity. The emphasis is on practical design, supported by theoretical components and the application of clear research methodologies. As well as developing a deeper knowledge of branding and graphic design, you will gain an understanding of how to develop brand strategies and propositions. An important part of the course involves developing an independent personal project that investigates these principles and their application.

Learning at this level will be about research, intellectual engagement, discovery, interaction and change. The final product for us is not in itself the goal - it is the research, exploration, evaluation and intellectual understanding of branding and identity that makes this MA distinctive.

Students on the MSc Economics with reference to Africa will complete courses on macro, micro, quantitative methods and growth. In addition, students must complete two courses dedicated to the study of the economics of Africa, one focusing on microeconomic issues, the other on macroeconomic issues, as well as an optional module and a dissertation in applied economics with a focus on one or more African countries.

The objectives of the programme are:

- To enable students to apply the principles of economic analysis to the design of economic policy with reference to Africa
- To teach postgraduates the technical and analytical skills to qualify them to practice as professional economists
- To enable practising professional economists to improve and update their skills and knowledge

Teaching & Learning

The MSc includes eight taught modules plus a preliminary course in Mathematics and Statistics and an 8,000-word dissertation.

The courses are taught in seminar groups and lectures. The degrees are awarded on the basis of assessed coursework, examinations and the dissertation.

The MSc degrees are taught over a period of twelve months of full-time study within a structured programme. In the case of part-time study, the degrees will be taught over two or three years. Four modules are studied each year, with the dissertation normally being completed in the second year.

Most courses involve a 50-minute lecture as a key component with linked tutorial classes.

- Seminars

At Masters level there is particular emphasis on seminar work. Students make full-scale presentations and are expected to write papers that often require significant independent work.

- Dissertation

Students are required to complete an 8,000-word dissertation in applied economics.

Our MSc programmes attract students with a wide range of backgrounds including many who have worked for a few years before coming to SOAS. Our popular quantitative courses are designed to be accessible to all of our students including those with a relatively small quantitative component in their first degree. Our well-received quantitative courses focus on applying basic methods used in empirical research. They equip students to carry out their own high quality empirical work and critically evaluate research, with relatively little emphasis on advanced econometric theory and mathematical proofs.

Our quantitative methods teaching begins with a three-week preliminary course in mathematics, statistics and computing. The objective of the course is to review the basic quantitative skills assumed once formal teaching commences. This course is compulsory.

A postgraduate degree in Economics with reference to Africa from SOAS equips students with a range of important skills to continue in the field of research as well as a portfolio of widely transferable employability skills valued by a wide range of employers. During your first stage you will be introduced to key management principles and theories, followed by a secondary stage that is designed to continue to build and develop your existing knowledge. Learning and teaching method

The teaching approach involves a blend of styles with an emphasis on an interactive environment. You will learn through lectures, seminars, group work, case studies, and analyses of contemporary issues in strategic procurement management. Part-time delivery is designed around the needs of practising industry professionals and takes place at weekends, where you come to the University’s Treforest Campus for one weekend every six weeks.

Students who already hold the CIPS Graduate Diploma, or equivalent, will be eligible for exemptions and entry to an 18-month fast-track programme (weekends) which starts in April.

The University also has the The Procurement Best Practice Academy which carries out research and consultancy. This means that the latest research and industry best practice are used to teach students.

All full-time members of staff in the purchasing and supply team are fellows or senior fellows of the Higher Education Academy.

Stretch intellectually

This course is for people who want to develop their capacity to think strategically and are ready for a new and personally stretching intellectual challenge. Subjects studied include principles of strategic communication and the impact of technology on communication. You will study rhetoric as the art of speech, and theories and concepts relating to internal communication. The course covers aspects of the management of strategic communication and research methods.

The Design Management course provides the opportunity for you to develop an advanced understanding of the practical application of design thinking and design strategy applied within an organisational, business and global context.

In the corporate world design managers oversee the development of products and services and manage the innovation process workflow. However, they also have a significant strategic role in managing the articulation of a business strategy, product and service values, requiring continuous improvement of the customer experience and often involving the management of external specialists. Additionally, they may be engaged in broader organisational development issues.

Students studying Design Management Innovation will focus on design thinking, research methods and the development of management, leadership and change management skills. In addition to operational management they will also focus on design thinking approaches to organisational change, behavioural change and transformation programmes.

The MDes Design Management Innovation draws on current Ravensbourne research. This includes rapid prototyping (an increasingly important operational aspect of the design process); business start up; team building and team dynamics; and the more strategic area of new business model development.

You will work regularly with peers from different disciplines to develop interdisciplinary skills and develop your own approach to design leadership, management and innovation. Major emphasis is placed on developing your own specialist subject in order to create original solutions to social challenges, consumer behaviour, organisational and leadership issues. You will be encouraged to engage proactively in the wide range of activities and events and in the opportunities for cross-disciplinary learning offered at Ravensbourne. Of particular importance is industry engagement through live project briefs and work placements.

- To understand the role of design management as a business discipline balancing both leadership roles in terms of innovation, the creation of vision and future directions and management roles in terms of using specific tools, methods and techniques.
- To approach leadership, organisational and enterprise development from the perspective of design thinking and creative innovation.

Stage One: developing a knowledge base and new reference points - introduces you to a range of theories and practices in the strategic use of design and innovation, with a particular focus on the method of design thinking in the global context and how it relates to design management.

Stage Two: putting new learning into a professional context – develops the practical application of design thinking with a focus on innovation and industry-oriented professional practice based on design management. It also extends your innovation and leadership toolkit.
