Module Details

This well-established course comprises four units followed by a dissertation:

Business Transformation through Quality Management introduces you to the fundamental concepts of Total Quality Management and Organisational Behaviour, focusing on the application of these concepts in the organisation. It includes driving a culture of continuous improvement and managing change.

Quantitative and Research Methods evaluates concepts of quantitative methods and the application of specialist statistics to aid decision-making within organisations. It also covers the theory and application of research methodologies to support organisational improvement activities. These skills are further developed in the dissertation.

Business Operations – the Quality Management Perspective will give you knowledge of business systems for quality planning, quality standards and the benefits accruing from integrated management systems and their application in the workplace to generate organisational efficiencies. It shows you how tools such as SERVQUAL, FMEA, QFD and Benchmarking can help evaluate how an organisation is performing against their strategic vision and goals.

Strategic Organisational Excellence looks at the links between concepts of excellence (as used by EFQM and other excellence models) and their use in the strategic management of an organisation. Teaching - how is the MSc Strategic Marketing taught?

Lectures

Lectures are a useful way to discuss key material or approaches, deal with issues, explore questions, concepts and theories, or introduce business case study material. During lectures, note taking and listening are essential as they will help you to make sense of what you have seen and heard, to identify and remember key points to understand difficult concepts and organise your material by making links and associations with other material.

Seminars

For small groups – these are structured, student-led sessions in which you might explore ideas in discussion, carry out practical tasks, or practice your research skills. All of these sessions are intended to provide forms of space in which you can discuss and share ideas; as well as develop skills and materials in preparation for assessments. In seminars, reading module materials, note taking and participating in discussion are essential. Actively participating and engaging in seminar discussion enhances presentation skills and the articulation of arguments and ideas and helps you prepare materials for assessment tasks.

Group or individual tutorials

Self-directed/ independent learning

Much of your learning at university takes place outside class sessions. This encourages autonomous learning, providing you with the opportunity for critical self-reflection or space for self-directed reading or research. An example might be a research or practical project linked to a module's learning outcomes that you undertake independently or with a small group supported by your tutor.

Assessment
You will be required to complete a number of coursework assignment for assessment. The coursework can be individual, such as plans, reports, memorandum and essays, or group which will involve activity including presentations and reports. Tutorials will also feature formal and informal feedback.

Delivering excellence in health and social care at an individual, team and organisational level is not just desirable but achievable.

Course details

The philosophy of this programme is that for excellence to flourish every member of staff must be committed to, and play their part in, an integrated governance approach. This is where people-centredness and people-centred approaches to care are afforded the same esteem and recognition as finance, performance, risk management, safety and quality.

The programme is designed to develop and equip critical champions and ambassadors for quality, safety and governance in health and social care. It enables you to apply your comprehensive knowledge, understanding, expertise and advanced skills to lead evidence-based enhancement of quality, safety and governance in your health and social care settings and evaluate the impact of this. The programme is suitable for individuals from the public, independent and voluntary sectors from any professional background, including clinical and support services.

What you study

Year 1 focuses on the transition to mastery and explores the context of safety, quality and governance in terms of policy, theory and experience, at a personal, local, national and international level. You also study different types and sources of evidence. You use these to identify a quality, safety or governance issue of relevance to your role based on an in-depth study of the principles, practices and tools of safety and governance in health and social care. You then develop and justify a business case for change based on this.

The modules studied in Year 1 make up the Advancing Quality Improvement in Health and Social Care, PgCert.

In Year 2, you plan and implement a change project based on your business case presented at the end of Year 1. To help you achieve this you study topics such as a human factors approach, strategic change management, action learning and leadership and evaluation methodologies. You then develop and critique an evaluation study proposal in Year 2 which you take forward during your dissertation module in Year 3. The modules studied in Year 2 make up the Advancing Human Factors in Health and Social Care, PgCert.

Course structure

Year 1 core modules

  • Principles and Practice of Safety and Governance in Health and Social Care
  • Using Evidence to Advance Quality, Safety and Governance in Health and Social Care

Year 2 core modules

  • Leading Person-centred Quality Improvement in Health and Social Care
  • Using a Human Factors Approach to Quality Improvement in Health and Social Care

Year 3 core modules

  • Dissertation: Evaluating Impact

Modules offered may vary.

Teaching

How you learn

In Years 1 and 2 the programme is taught in short study blocks spread across the academic year over a total of 14 days. We use a range of teaching methods including lectures and workshops, student-led seminars, action learning, real-life scenarios and case study analysis, interactive and online learning activities, directed and self-directed study activities. Year 3 is mainly guided self-directed study with the support of a dissertation supervisor. You are supported by module tutors with extensive experience in this subject area and the programme leader who is a member of the founding cohort for the NHS England and Health Foundation Q initiative.

How you are assessed

We use a range of assessment modes throughout the programme. These include an essay on the nature and use of evidence, analysis of a quality, safety or governance issue using a human factors approach, a business case and the final dissertation evaluating the change you have implemented.

Other modes of assessment include a poster presentation and defence, and an oral presentation with questions and answers.

The programme is supported by a critical friends stakeholder support forum which consists of service users and carers, employer representatives and academic staff. Members of this group participate in student assessment as well as supporting programme design and delivery as a means of ensuring the person-centred approach pervades all aspects of the programme and to maximise employer/organisational benefit.

Employability

On successful completion of this programme you are equipped with a range of knowledge, expertise and experiences such as advanced reasoning and decision-making skills. You are also able to work collaboratively, present and research. And you have strong ICT skills that are highly sought by employers. The programme is relevant for you if you are working in or would like to work in a specialist quality, safety or governance role, or one covering these issues.

Enhance your career in the food industry with advanced skills in Food Safety and Quality

With a Master of Food Safety and Quality, you will play a key role in managing food safety and quality in any food manufacturing company.

Food safety and quality are essential to the success of all food manufacturing companies and critical for New Zealand’s economic success. Why? Because food manufacturers need absolute confidence in the safety and quality of their products. To work in this exciting field, students can choose to study full time or part time with a programme supported with an on-line learning environment.

In big demand by employers around the world

Internationally, food safety is a growth industry.

Food companies have a growing need for expertise in food safety and quality. If they do not have this expertise themselves, consultants with the relevant qualifications provide them with services. You have the opportunity to start your own consultancy business or to work for the government department overseeing food safety in your country. In New Zealand, the government department is the Ministry for Primary Industries.

Internationally recognised and unique

Massey University is ranked as one of the top 50 universities worldwide for Food Science & Technology (out of 300), according to ShanghaiRanking's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects.

We have been producing highly-skilled graduates for the New Zealand and international food industries for more than 50 years. The lecturers have extensive industry experience supported by a strong academic research base.

Massey University also hosts the New Zealand Food Safety Centre with access to the latest expertise in food safety.

Work on real food industry issues

The Master in Food Safety and Quality provides practical skills and a depth of knowledge to enable you to manage problems in food manufacturing and develop preventative tools designed to provide confidence in the quality and safety of food.

World-leading facilities

At Massey University, you have access to the latest modern food processing and analytical equipment to undertake research that is applied and practical to the food industry including:

  • A fully equipped pilot plant operating under a risk management programme to enable the export of foods of assured safety and quality
  • Specialist equipment for both thermal and non-thermal processing
  • Laboratories equipped to analyse microbial, chemical and foreign matter contaminants, including a PC2 laboratory enabling you to work with foodborne pathogens
  • Instruments to measure food composition

Massey guarantees you research expertise in meat, fish and dairy technology, fruit and vegetable postharvest storage and processing, food formulation, additives and ingredients.

Why post graduate study?

Postgraduate study is hugely regarding and empowering. The Master of Food Safety and Quality will push you to produce your best creative, strategic and theoretical ideas. Our experts are there to guide you as you undertake in-depth and independent study to prepare you for a senior technical or consultancy role in the food industry.

Not just more of the same

Postgraduate study is not just ‘more of the same’ undergraduate study. It takes you to a new level of knowledge and expertise, especially in planning and undertaking research.

This specialisation will focus on the strategic and visionary elements of what might be called the ‘new’ planning enterprise.

As the preparations for the New Urban Agenda by UN Habitat III signals, the agenda of urban planners in the 21st century will become tighter. Cities and city regions will continue growing in size and function. Challenges derive directly from ‘external’ processes like globalisation, climate change and migration. The city and city region is also inscribed as central element into the growth model of the modern society.

These challenges translate into the domain of planning, with newly emerging forms of collective plan-making and new governance arrangements taking shape. In a positive sense, urban development is negotiated and created in urban future laboratories. How can planners deal with these changing circumstances, and add value to both the bottom-up emerging local initiatives and revise the top-down approaches towards managing spatial development.

How can they safeguard common values of a shared city or regional identity, a functioning ‘spatial fabric,’ or an equitable access to public services? These and other questions are addressed in the Master's specialisation in Strategic Spatial Planning.
