Course objectives

Public relations courses at the University of Stirling are designed for students from a variety of degree backgrounds to develop the appropriate intellectual skills at Master's level for a management-level career in Public Relations, Communication Management, Corporate Affairs or Public Affairs. The course helps students develop a critical appreciation of the role of public relations in society and to develop key analytical and professional skills.

Our approach is founded on the following principles:
- Public relations contributes to the effectiveness of organisations by improving organisational relationships and facilitating public conversations and debate.
- Public relations has a remit for corporate social responsibility through its issues management function and responsibility for reputation, which necessarily means that it has to help organisations change to meet new agendas of sustainability.
- Teaching strategic public relations can facilitate better public understanding of the occupation, and thus mitigate contemporary cultural stereotypes and prejudice (much fostered by journalists who have an interest in purveying negative images), as well as diffusing core concepts that can benefit Scotland’s private and public sector enterprises: small, medium and large. Improved understanding of this organisational function can aid government and NGOs in political and policy communications.
- In understanding public relations practitioners as being, in some aspects, ‘discourse workers’ it becomes easier to see that the functional role has the potential to contribute to a more enlightened and better-informed society.

Public relations takes place at points of change and moments of transformation in complex contemporary societies. Typically, public relations activity clusters around (i) public policy formation (ii) organisational change and development (iii) public issues such as the environment (iv) major global shifts such as conflict, unstable international environments, globalisation, natural disasters or human disasters such as war or global financial collapse.
Bearing all this in mind, public relations education is necessarily embedded in the contemporary issues of the day in a very wide range of environments (political, economic, technological, socio-cultural, regulatory/legal) and contexts (sports, health, religion, tourism, development, regeneration).
Our courses are regularly restructured to improve their effectiveness and efficiency in meeting both academic and professional requirements. Modules relate to the Public Relations Education and Training Matrix developed with, and endorsed by, the Chartered Institute of Public Relations and the Public Relations Consultants Association.

The MA International Public Relations and Global Communications Management is a unique one year course that develops the skills and techniques required to practice public relations and communications at an international level.

Public relations, at its heart, is about communication between an organisation and its public(s), but 21st century public relations - with the advent of new media - is embedded in everything from politics and business to celebrity. PR is now firmly at the heart of strategic organisational planning.

Aside from gaining valuable practical skills, you are introduced to business, organisational and PR theory so that you can apply critical thinking to professional scenarios to further the effectiveness and quality of public relations that is practiced in industry. This synthesis of theory and practice culminates in a final dissertation of 15,000 to 20,000 words where you have the opportunity to apply what you have learnt to an area of personal PR interest. CIPR Diploma in Public Affairs students learn alongside and MSc Strategic Communications and Public Relations students ensuring that you benefit from sharing experiences and developing a network of colleagues. Assessment is through submission of a 6,000 word research project. Support is offered with research project preparation.

Accreditation of prior learning:

Students who have already been awarded a Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) Diploma receive 45 credits towards the MSc Strategic Communication and Public Relations, exempting them from specified parts of the course. Students who have already been awarded the CIPR Internal Communication Diploma/ CIPR Public Affairs Diploma receive 30 credits exempting them from specified parts of the course.

This new CIPR qualification will allow you to gain an advanced understanding of professional practice, including PR strategy and planning, content management, media and engagement, measurement and evaluation, and PR leadership. All underpinned by reference to ethics and the code of conduct.

You’ll also put your learning into practice, evaluating a wide range of PR concepts and techniques and applying them practically to your own work and sector. The course is for experienced PR professionals who are ready to progress towards a senior management position, or individuals who have previously studied the CIPR Advanced Certificate in Public Relations.

Teaching, learning and assessment

On campus teaching comprises a variety of approaches including lectures, workshops, case study and group work. The course is split into three units and you will submit one assignment for each.

The CIPR Professional PR Diploma syllabus is based on professional practice underpinned by core PR principles, models and concepts.

The syllabus incorporates three separate units.

  • The first unit is focused on the PR strategy and planning process, with an emphasis on research that establishes robust communication objectives, related to the organisation’s goals.

Part 1

LLM in Public Procurement Law and Strategy (1 Year programme)

Part 1 will involve the study of 120 credits.

September intake: Part 1 will be undertaken in the period of September to June.

Teaching will mostly be seminar based which will promote group and individual interaction, which also ensures that every individual candidate is encouraged to contribute to discussions.


Executive LLM in Public Procurement Law and Strategy (2 Year programme)

Taught modules are undertaken over two academic sessions and will involve the study of 120 credits.

Teaching on the Executive stream will be in the form of structured lectures facilitated by the Lecturer and driven by class discussions and case study analysis.

Delivery will be on a block release basis with classes delivered over weekends – on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday – during two academic sessions. Accommodation for participants on the Executive stream is included in the programme fee. Participants will be accommodated at the Management Centre at Bangor University.
Collaborative learning will be an important part of the learning process for the stream.
The module will be taught using a combination of expert Procurement Law academic staff and legal practitioners from leading law firms and in-house legal departments.
Case studies will be used to help the candidates to contextualise active procurement legal problems against a background of realistic scenarios where they get the opportunity to apply the relevant rules of law that they will have been lectured on.
Candidates will be expected to have prepared essential reading on case law, legislation, and other procurement rules prior to the seminar, and will discuss the legal issues raised by the reading in an interactive fashion in order that the class can engage in problem solving facilitated by the lecturer.
Part 2

The Applied Procurement Research Projects (APRP) which is valued at 60 credits and is undertaken on successful completion of Part 1.

Candidates on the one year full-time programme undertake their project during the period of June to September (September intake).

Candidates on the two year programme will undertake their project in the final year of their programme).

The research project comprises a two week work placement in a procurement function and the submission by candidates of either:

One essay with a maximum length of between 18,000 and 20,000 words OR
Two essays not exceeding 10,000-words per essay OR
Four essays not exceeding 5,000-words per essay.
The APRP will be used to familiarise candidates with a broad range of current themes in Public Procurement Law and Strategy. Indicative areas where candidates may undertake applied research projects include national and European Procurement Law, Litigation Strategies, relationship between European Internal Market Law and Public Procurement Law, International Procurement Regimes, Sustainable Procurement, Public Procurement and Innovation, Procurement Relations, Procurement Ethics, Risk Management in Public Procurement, and Contract Design and Management. Other topics proposed by candidates may be acceptable subject to ratification by the Course Leader.

You will gain a solid grounding in all the key concepts, techniques and skills needed to develop effectively as a PR practitioner. It is a qualification in its own right, but also prepares you for the CIPR Diploma. You will be taught at one of the most prestigious centres for public relations in Europe, and you will have access to our full range of specialist resources such as online journals and our Library with 24/7 access.

Students, who are mainly (but not exclusively) working in public relations or a related occupation, attend several sessions, with options to begin in Autumn or in Spring.

Mature Applicants

Our University welcomes applications from mature applicants who demonstrate academic potential. We usually require some evidence of recent academic study, for example completion of an access course, however recent relevant work experience may also be considered. Please note that for some of our professional courses all applicants will need to meet the specified entry criteria and in these cases work experience cannot be considered in lieu.

Professional development (Personal development)
This module provides an introduction to management skills and to reflective professional practice that will help you assess and develop a dynamic career in public relations.

In this module you will become familiar with the primary tactics used in public relations, and some of the tools used to plan and manage them in the managerial role.
