In the wake of globalisation, companies need to respond rapidly to change at all levels in order to maintain their competitive position and sustain growth.

The use of project management to do this, by implementing strategic objectives and managing overall operations – a practice now known as management-by-projects – has seen a commensurate growth in demand for qualifications which can deliver these skills and abilities. Strategic Project Management (SPM) differentiates itself from other project management offerings by providing greater emphasis on the strategic requirement in managing a portfolio of projects to deliver organisational goals.

Extensive links with industry have been created through the course's activities. The course runs popular conferences led by students work, and an international project management conference in association with Wuerzburg Fachhochschule University and the Association for Project Management's 'Inspire' project.

The Centre for Project Management has a UK wide presence, attracting students of project management from across the country. You will have the opportunity to publish papers in local and international conferences hosted by masters students. A research-led approach means that in addition to research developed by staff and students on the course, each individual will have many opportunities to investigate areas of particular interest and relevance.

If you feel that full-time study may be difficult given your other commitments, we offer two options to study part-time that continue to prove extremely popular with professionals from up and down the country. You can study 12 Sundays a year for two years as part of our full day workshops or, alternatively, you can study on weekday evenings on a more regular basis.

Managing several projects in a coordinated way to successfully implement a strategy is typically referred to as 'Programme Management'. Many project managers will have more than one project to deliver. You will complete a total of five units (including your dissertation) involving attendance of six or eight days for each unit. You will study several key topics covering areas of project management theory and methods, while gaining an insight into their practical application in a business context.

Here are the units you will study:

Project Environment and Planning: You will develop an understanding of the relationship between project and business management, as well as the project management environment and the factors that influence project outcomes. Strategic aspects of projects are addressed, including project selection and portfolio design. You will also learn how project managers must understand the benefits to be delivered by projects, the requirements of stakeholders and how to work within the constraints of cost, time and quality. Estimation methods and planning techniques are taught together with quality management. Approaches to the planning and control of projects that have been developed in different sectors are also covered, including agile methods and fast tracking.

Budgets and Commercial Management: This unit introduces you to raising project finance, building, monitoring and controlling project budgets and measuring Earned Value of project deliverables. It also covers the commercial aspects of procurement including tendering, contracting and the skills and practices of contract and bid negotiation, providing you with the tools and techniques for managing project budgets. The units also examines the key roles that project managers, budget managers and key project personnel play in managing project budgets.

People Management and Risk: This unit develops a critical understanding of individual, team and organisational working in order to deliver project goals successfully. It covers how individual characteristics such as personality, intelligence, ability and skills, motivation and attitudes affect individual performance. You will learn how to empower individuals and teams to achieve quality standards which enhance personal team and organisational performance, together with the development of creative and credible leadership. It also examines the key challenges in the application of risk management frameworks and models in project management, crisis management and corporate governance. Risk management strategies and the development of effective project mitigation and contingency action plans are critically evaluated.

Project Investigation and Systems Methods: This unit explores the investigation of project issues through the use of a structured research methodology and project management analysis tools to enhance the research process. Wider strategic issues are explored to place the research process into context and to illustrate how appropriate research methods can be identified for specific types of research problems. You will also look at tools for the modelling and analysis of complex problem situations (including systems thinking, soft systems methods and influence diagrams) and how these can be used to diagnose problem situations to identify relevant areas for further investigation. Project management methodologies including PRINCE2, Partnering and Programme Management as a wider context for project management research issues are examined. You will produce a research proposal that brings together the use of research methodology and project systems in identifying, justifying and investigating a research question that will feed into the research conducted in your final dissertation.

Dissertation: This unit enables you to deepen your understanding of an aspect of project management of your own choice. Many students choose to investigate topics which they intend to focus on in the next stage of their career. The unit is structured as a research project so you can demonstrate your ability to identify, design, plan and undertake research on a specific project management issue and effectively communicate your findings in an appropriate manner for a Master’s degree.

Programme Assessment

The units are structured as eight teaching blocks of three days of lectures, seminars and interactive syndicate work, with periods of self-managed study between blocks. Each of these will be assessed by coursework assignments. You will also produce a dissertation with guidance from a supervisor. The dissertation is structured as an independent research project to deepen your understanding of a chosen aspect of project management. Your choice of topic can contribute towards the next stage of your career by demonstrating your ability to identify, design, undertake and communicate your original research on a specific project management topic.

We've developed this course with three interconnected areas in mind of profession, practice and research. As a result, every module is built with an awareness of the requirements of project management bodies such as the APM (in the UK) and the Project Management Institute (in the USA). The bodies of knowledge of these organisations are combined with PRINCE2 project management methodology and MS Project, and applied to real world project assignments that will also require the application of a variety of methodologies and techniques to give you invaluable practical experience, which you can further enhance through work placements undertaken while studying for your dissertation.

Our academic team then take all of this knowledge and experience and develop and apply new theories and approaches as part of their research, which in turn influences how project management develops as a discipline. Lecturing staff have a history of publishing dissertations, with postgraduate students, in journals and conferences. To meet the educational and professional needs of each student, the programme offers three awards and exit points: Postgraduate Certificate; Postgraduate Diploma and MSc. The Industry Project Management module, which involves students undertaking a live consultancy project as a group. Employability & Careers

All students undertake a live consultancy project through the Industry Project Management module, which provides an opportunity to engage with employers in the industry. As part of this module, they have the opportunity to gain an accredited qualification from the Project Management Institute.

Student have the option to undertake the Internship module. The duration of this (unpaid) internship is either for a minimum of 20 days, which will normally be undertaken during term-time one day a week throughout semester one and semester two or in blocks of time during the semester breaks.

Alternatively, the students can undertake an internship (paid or unpaid) for the duration of 10-12 weeks (usually engaging in a full time role in an organisation) and this will normally be completed during semester three which would mean that the engagement with the final project would be deferred until September when the internship is completed and 120 credits are awarded.

Students undertake operational, supervisory and if possible, management tasks and duties within the organisation; During their internship students are expected to follow the same work pattern as other employees in the organisation and to perform routine work consistent with that which they aspire to on successful completion of their programme of study. They will also undertake a work based project tailored to meet the needs of the organisation. Students can opt for an individual consultancy project as their final project.

The majority have students have progressed to managerial roles within the industries.

Project management is traditionally described in terms of the overall planning, control and co-ordination of a project from inception to completion, aimed at meeting a client's requirements and ensuring completion within specified constraints of time, cost and quality.

While this definition continues to provide a good starting point, the reality of modern project management is extremely complex. Client organisations are often pluralistic, comprising multiple stakeholders with different objectives. The complexity of the construction process thus leads to inherent uncertainty.

The role of the project manager is to integrate the various sectors of the industry in order to manage key interfaces throughout the project supply chain. Therefore, the successful project manager must have the ability to integrate and lead an interdisciplinary team in uncertainty. Effective leadership and sensitivity to human issues are vital. Modern clients demand an integrated and effective approach to the management of their construction projects. The discipline of project management continues to evolve and our MSc in Project Management is at the forefront of these developments.

The distinctive focus of the course is on the strategic management of projects, programmes and portfolios.

The aim of the course is to provide a coherent framework for the discipline and practice of project management. Each module includes a number of sessions delivered by leading practitioners. The course is continually informed not only by the latest developments in industry, but also by on-going international research.

A recurring theme throughout the course concerns the dynamic nature of construction projects. Not only is it necessary to set clear objectives at the beginning of a project, it is also important to update them continually as the project unfolds.

A further theme is provided by the need for project managers to provide leadership. This requires a high level of interpersonal skills to motivate diverse team members towards the realisation of project success. Effective project management requires a sound knowledge of tools and techniques. It also requires an ability to think strategically. Traditionally, notions of command and control have to be matched with an ability to manage 'soft' issues. People management is central to the art of project management.

A particular emphasis is given to the early stages of construction projects and the interface with complex clients; projects are rarely carried out in isolation.

Dissertation

The dissertation is a major individual research project. Guidance will be given on choosing a research topic, research techniques and the style and presentation of the finished document. Classes in research skills are provided as part of the dissertation module. Students will have their own carefully selected dissertation tutor whose role is to help them plan and successfully execute this key part of the programme.

Full-time

We offer a one-year, full-time modular course. It is taught with ten, one-week attendance periods at the University. The full-time programme starts in September each year.

Flexible part-time

As these projects become more socially and technically complex in a changing world dominated by a concern for sustainability, there has been a growing challenge to develop existing and new skills and expertise in construction project management. - Federated 3D Building Information Modelling (BIM)
The creation, deployment and use of aggregated and integrated models are key goals of collaboration through BIM. This module aims to deliver hands-on practical skills on the use of BIM technologies (i.e. design software and collaboration tools) for real-time co-creation and data sharing of federated/aggregated 3D BIM models. The concept of shared situational awareness within design teams/processes will be explored.

In addition to taught modules, students have the opportunity to do a dissertation which matches specific career aspirations. Alternatively, students have the opportunity to undertake a company internship (subject to meeting specific criteria1) which provides the chance to apply skills and management theory in carrying out real projects for host organisations.

The course also offers a module on project management methodologies which can lead to the Prince2 foundation certificate in project management (subject to passing the required exam), used extensively by the UK Government and widely recognised in the private sector, both in the UK and internationally.

Please note: Students will need to pass all Semester 1 modules and attend two compulsory employability skills workshops. After an interview with an internal panel of academics and formal presentation, successful students are selected by the host organisation.

Course overview

The MSc in Programme and Project Management is a three-year part-time programme that begins in January each year. The first two years are built around a series of nine intensive residential modules that are delivered over a series of three-day residential periods. You will also work on a group action consultancy project, spending three days working as a team, investigating current programmes within a modern organisation. The final year will be focused on your thesis.

Individual Project

The thesis is an opportunity for you to carry out rigorous research in programme and project management that is of particular interest to you and your organisation. You will work closely with a supervisor who will provide expert guidance, insights and support throughout the project, from the planning stage through to delivery.

Professional Portfolio is a 20 week, 45 credit point subject available to Masters of Project Management (Professional) students in the Faculty of Society & Design. This subject is strongly experientially oriented and encourages students to develop their professional skills in a real world environment. The subject will ensure that students combine self-analysis and reflective learning skills with professional methodologies, so as to expand analytic and strategic thinking capabilities. It will provide practical experience for students to develop their skills in a profession relevant to their Masters specialisation.

All students will complete a 2,000 word scoping document, and either undertake a work placement in Australia for 210 hours (which includes an employer’s report) and reflective journal (up to 5,000 words) OR complete a collaborative research project totalling up to 15,000 words. All students will submit a final professional portfolio collection of documents, highlighting their practical and theoretical expertise in their profession of choice.

Intensive mode delivery

The Master of Project Management (Professional) is delivered in intensive mode. Intensive mode delivery is a compact and time efficient way to complete a postgraduate qualification with minimal impact on professional and personal lifestyles. Subjects are generally delivered over two weekends during the semester with two sets of three-day sessions per subject, usually scheduled Thursday to Saturday (approximately six to eight contact hours per day) with a break of four or five weeks between session one and session two of each subject

Participants will receive 40 hours of combined lectures, discussion groups, case studies and workshops during contact hours. International students are required to be on campus every week.
