What you will study

This Masters course is delivered in three distinct stages which comprises of 180 academic credits. During your first stage you will be introduced to key management principles and theories, followed by a secondary stage that is designed to continue to build and develop your existing knowledge. The final stage of the course will focus research and application to live projects, alongside a critical understanding of concepts covered throughout.

Stage One

- Purchasing Principles and Management (20 credits)*
Compare and contrast the strategic links between procurement, purchasing and the notion of supply chain management, this module is aimed at developing your ability to effectively and ethically manage supply as a holistic process.

- Strategic Operations Management and Operational Research (20 credits)*
Develop your ability and skills in strategic operational management tools and techniques with an appreciation of operational processes, planning and control systems.

- Sustainable Supply Chain Management (20 credits)*
Explore the strategic need, role and value for logistics, purchasing and supply chain research within organisations in order to achieve sustainable supply chain networks in the future.

Stage 2

- Commercial Relationships (20 credits)*
Gain a critical understanding of the contribution of strategic accounting information to decision making in business. You’ll be introduced to major-themes underlying trading law with commercial and consumer contracts.

- Advanced Procurement (20 credits)
Examine the strategic internal and external relationships required to manage procurement and purchasing and supply, and the new and innovative cutting-edge procurement and purchasing principles and philosophies.

- Research Methods (20 credits)
Develop your understanding and research skills in a management and/or professional development context; critically reviewing a range of research methodologies and methods of providing management information for decision making.

Stage 3

- Dissertation in Purchasing, Logistics, Supply Chain (60 credits)
You’ll be required to produce an extended piece of written postgraduate research, involving a significant piece of student-directed learning, based on a detailed investigation into a key area.

Learning and teaching method

The teaching approach involves a blend of styles with an emphasis on an interactive environment. You will learn through lectures, seminars, group work, case studies, and analyses of contemporary issues in strategic procurement management. Part-time delivery is designed around the needs of practising industry professionals and takes place at weekends, where you come to the University’s Treforest Campus for one weekend every six weeks.

Students who already hold the CIPS Graduate Diploma, or equivalent, will be eligible for exemptions and entry to an 18-month fast-track programme (weekends) which starts in April.

The University also has the The Procurement Best Practice Academy which carries out research and consultancy. This means that the latest research and industry best practice are used to teach students.

All full-time members of staff in the purchasing and supply team are fellows or senior fellows of the Higher Education Academy.

Part 1

LLM in Public Procurement Law and Strategy (1 Year programme)

Part 1 will involve the study of 120 credits.

September intake: Part 1 will be undertaken in the period of September to June.

Teaching will mostly be seminar based which will promote group and individual interaction, which also ensures that every individual candidate is encouraged to contribute to discussions.


Executive LLM in Public Procurement Law and Strategy (2 Year programme)

Taught modules are undertaken over two academic sessions and will involve the study of 120 credits.

Teaching on the Executive stream will be in the form of structured lectures facilitated by the Lecturer and driven by class discussions and case study analysis.

Delivery will be on a block release basis with classes delivered over weekends – on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday – during two academic sessions. Accommodation for participants on the Executive stream is included in the programme fee. Participants will be accommodated at the Management Centre at Bangor University.
Collaborative learning will be an important part of the learning process for the stream.
The module will be taught using a combination of expert Procurement Law academic staff and legal practitioners from leading law firms and in-house legal departments.
Case studies will be used to help the candidates to contextualise active procurement legal problems against a background of realistic scenarios where they get the opportunity to apply the relevant rules of law that they will have been lectured on.
Candidates will be expected to have prepared essential reading on case law, legislation, and other procurement rules prior to the seminar, and will discuss the legal issues raised by the reading in an interactive fashion in order that the class can engage in problem solving facilitated by the lecturer.
Part 2

The Applied Procurement Research Projects (APRP) which is valued at 60 credits and is undertaken on successful completion of Part 1.

Candidates on the one year full-time programme undertake their project during the period of June to September (September intake).

Candidates on the two year programme will undertake their project in the final year of their programme).

The research project comprises a two week work placement in a procurement function and the submission by candidates of either:

One essay with a maximum length of between 18,000 and 20,000 words OR
Two essays not exceeding 10,000-words per essay OR
Four essays not exceeding 5,000-words per essay.
The APRP will be used to familiarise candidates with a broad range of current themes in Public Procurement Law and Strategy. Indicative areas where candidates may undertake applied research projects include national and European Procurement Law, Litigation Strategies, relationship between European Internal Market Law and Public Procurement Law, International Procurement Regimes, Sustainable Procurement, Public Procurement and Innovation, Procurement Relations, Procurement Ethics, Risk Management in Public Procurement, and Contract Design and Management. Other topics proposed by candidates may be acceptable subject to ratification by the Course Leader.

Competency in project management has become a key part of the skills-set of every construction professional and executive, with many construction project managers functioning in a strategic and co-ordinating role in the delivery of the client’s physical development and investment programme.

Society continues to value and shape the built environment resulting in both public and private investment in construction assets and the successful completion of construction projects. As these projects become more socially and technically complex in a changing world dominated by a concern for sustainability, there has been a growing challenge to develop existing and new skills and expertise in construction project management. This challenge is not only national but global as the need for construction project management skills continues to grow internationally. Indeed, our student cohorts reflect this global challenge with students from across multiple continents.

We have been running programmes in MSc Construction Project Management for nearly 20 years. This arose from the need to extend the managerial remit to those activities that fall outside the construction phase to include areas such as financing, design and hand-over. The programme is therefore tailored for construction professionals looking for a more holistic perspective of construction project processes and the challenge of project management in complex building and infrastructure projects.

It considers the organisational, human and cultural impact of facilities and ways in which improved services can affect facility performance. Within the course, ongoing performance measurement systems are also described which enable the effective management of service contracts.

•Space Planning and Management - mandatory
This course provides a strategic overview of space from a business perspective. It identifies the supply and demand process in relation to property portfolios and considers tools and techniques that enable the effective modelling and use of space. It examines the concept of flexibility and reuse in the context of a changing organisational context. Alternative space strategies are examined in the course in tandem with new ways of working. It also considers how space can be used to support work-life balance strategies in organisations.

•Asset Maintenance Management - mandatory
This course examines the effective management and maintenance of operational property. Key aspects include: maintenance policy and standards; planned and responsive maintenance; asset appraisal and evaluation; information management; maintenance; property portfolios; acquisitions and disposals.

•Contracts & Procurement - mandatory
This course considers facilities management in the broader context of the construction cycle. The advent of new procurement methods such as the Private Finance Initiative (PFI) have inevitably drawn facilities managers into the larger issue of construction projects and their procurement, This course considers procurement arrangement options, principles of contract law, procurement through Public Private Partnerships, construction contracts, negotiation, as well as conflicts and disputes. Facilities managers have an ever increasing contribution to make in this process in the capacity of informed client.

•Sustainable Practices in Facilities Management - mandatory
This course examines a number of key issues in facilities management which are rapidly gaining significance within the industry. You will complete a total of five units (including your dissertation) involving attendance of six or eight days for each unit. You will study several key topics covering areas of project management theory and methods, while gaining an insight into their practical application in a business context.

Project Environment and Planning: You will develop an understanding of the relationship between project and business management, as well as the project management environment and the factors that influence project outcomes. Strategic aspects of projects are addressed, including project selection and portfolio design. You will also learn how project managers must understand the benefits to be delivered by projects, the requirements of stakeholders and how to work within the constraints of cost, time and quality. Estimation methods and planning techniques are taught together with quality management. Approaches to the planning and control of projects that have been developed in different sectors are also covered, including agile methods and fast tracking.

Budgets and Commercial Management: This unit introduces you to raising project finance, building, monitoring and controlling project budgets and measuring Earned Value of project deliverables. It also covers the commercial aspects of procurement including tendering, contracting and the skills and practices of contract and bid negotiation, providing you with the tools and techniques for managing project budgets. The units also examines the key roles that project managers, budget managers and key project personnel play in managing project budgets.

People Management and Risk: This unit develops a critical understanding of individual, team and organisational working in order to deliver project goals successfully. It covers how individual characteristics such as personality, intelligence, ability and skills, motivation and attitudes affect individual performance. You will learn how to empower individuals and teams to achieve quality standards which enhance personal team and organisational performance, together with the development of creative and credible leadership. It also examines the key challenges in the application of risk management frameworks and models in project management, crisis management and corporate governance. Risk management strategies and the development of effective project mitigation and contingency action plans are critically evaluated.

Project Investigation and Systems Methods: This unit explores the investigation of project issues through the use of a structured research methodology and project management analysis tools to enhance the research process. Wider strategic issues are explored to place the research process into context and to illustrate how appropriate research methods can be identified for specific types of research problems. You will also look at tools for the modelling and analysis of complex problem situations (including systems thinking, soft systems methods and influence diagrams) and how these can be used to diagnose problem situations to identify relevant areas for further investigation. Project management methodologies including PRINCE2, Partnering and Programme Management as a wider context for project management research issues are examined. You will produce a research proposal that brings together the use of research methodology and project systems in identifying, justifying and investigating a research question that will feed into the research conducted in your final dissertation.

Dissertation: This unit enables you to deepen your understanding of an aspect of project management of your own choice. Many students choose to investigate topics which they intend to focus on in the next stage of their career. The unit is structured as a research project so you can demonstrate your ability to identify, design, plan and undertake research on a specific project management issue and effectively communicate your findings in an appropriate manner for a Master’s degree.

Programme Assessment

Project Teams (20 credits)
This module is concerned with the structure, development, leadership and management of teams that plan and deliver projects. The MSc in Commercial Project Management prepares students for a professional role in the management of commercial projects by providing students with an understanding of the both the people-related and technical requirements necessary for the successful management of projects, as well as the organisational and strategic aspects; it also stresses the commercial aspects of project management: for example, marketing and sales, financial management, procurement, bidding and contract management.

This MSc is one of four MSc courses within the Management of Projects Group of Programmes. The other MSc courses are: Management of Projects, Construction Project Management and Engineering Project Management.

The School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering has a long history of delivering project management related masters courses and the staff who deliver the programme are drawn for a wide variety of backgrounds and industrial experience.

Teaching and learning

The Commercial Project Management MSc is a full time course which is studied over 12 months, starting in September each year. The course comprises eight taught course units, each worth 15 credits, and a research dissertation worth 60 credits. Students on this particular MSc study four core units fundamental to project management, and which are shared by students on the other MSc courses. In addition, students on this course study Contract Management and programme specific unit, Commercial Management, where students work in teams to produce documents related to the buying and selling side of a case study activity. Students must also select two optional units and carry out a Commercial Project Management based dissertation.

Assessment of the taught part of the programme is via a combination of formal written examinations and coursework assignments, which will include group work and oral presentations. Some assessment is based on online material provided by the Association for Project Management (APM) and PRINCE2 (a process-based method for effective project management).

Career opportunities

The MSc Commercial Project Management Programme acquaints students with the basic processes of project management but focuses more specifically on the commercial aspects of project management, the establishment of stable, profitable and low-risk exchange relationships for project procurement or sales and the management of the contracts that represent these relationships in a range of project settings. Practical skills in the buy and side project procurement, contract management and conflict and dispute resolution are developed. Consultancy Project (full-time only)

For full-time students, there is a consultancy project opportunity which will help you gain valuable experience in real-life project management. The consultancy project will normally last between 6-8 weeks and run during the final semester, July to September.

Principles of Project Management (20 credits)
This module provides a generic introduction to and overview of the key principles, methodologies, tools and techniques of project management.

Project Teams (20 credits)
This module is concerned with the structure, development, leadership and management of teams that plan and deliver projects. It deals with relations, interactions and communications within and beyond the team. The particular contexts of high performance, self -directed, dispersed and virtual teams are also considered.

Project Strategy (20 credits)
This module examines the different ways in which businesses and organisations make use of projects. It considers the strategic role of projects in a variety of organisational contexts and analyses methods for project selection and project portfolio management.

You can choose form one of the following three pathways:

Environment pathway

Commercial Management of Construction (20 credits)
This module will provide you with critical appreciation of how commercial projects balance competitiveness against profitability particularly in the value of human resource. The module will cover the procurement and risk management techniques used in the construction industry.

Urban Development (20 credits)
This module will provide you with the critical analytical tools to determine the value of development appraisals, net present value techniques, residual land valuations and the role these play in the acquisition, disposal and evaluation of development opportunities. The module will consider the role construction technology and environmental services related to the projects viability and worth.
The module will consider the project management issues faced by a client over the whole project with the separate built environment module considering the construction phase issues.

Computing pathway

Information Systems Project Management (20 credits)
Project management related to information systems is ever growing in importance within a wide range of private and public sector environments, operating with an ever increasing need for efficient budgetary controls and successful completions on time.

The module provides you with a comprehensive appreciation of the associated good practise for Project Management, the skills and professional techniques used in preparation for their related roles and interactions within or associated to commercial project teams. The life cycle of any project needs to be appreciated by all stakeholders and thus the students within their studies will be further equipped in order to support and encourage others to see successful completion.

Consultancy and Technological Innovation (20 credits)
This module provides you with the skills to understand and operate in the complex multi–sourced environment of supporting business change supported by global technologies and apply these concepts to a real implementation case study using programme management concepts. You will examine the organisational structure of IT including systems integrators and consultancy and overview of the IT Consulting world, its principles and practice using the strategic management of leading edge technology initiatives as a focus area.

Enterprise Management pathway

Management of Organisational Change (20 credits)
This module is concerned with managing change within organisations. Organisational change is a complex process that occurs in specific organisational contexts. The module therefore critically considers the nature and experience of change from the perspective of the multiple organisational factors involved in the process: including the role of the change agent, the impact on individuals (including the potential for resistance), the building of receptive contexts, and the importance of organisational culture, power and politics.

Strategic Innovation Management (20 credits)
This module is concerned with the ways in which organisations and their extended supply chains can develop new processes, products and services that add real value. It focuses on the meaning of innovation, types of innovation, sources of innovation and innovation best practice in context.

Research

Professional Enquiry Methods (20 credits)
This module is designed to introduce the essential components of undertaking professional enquiry and postgraduate research. As such, it develops skills and knowledge that will contribute to successful completion of a dissertation. It also provides a basis for assessing the validity of procedures employed and results obtained in any research presented to participants in the future

Research in the Real World (40 credits)
This module is concerned with conducting a piece of original research or professional enquiry related to the overall field of projects and project management. It requires reporting of research results and their analysis in the form of a written structured dissertation.

This programme offers a unique curriculum in which project management is embedded into logistics and supply chain process management, including procurement, production, distribution and customer service, with a diverse range in design and structures.

It embraces the latest information and communications technology skills applied to logistics, and covers global supply chain management business strategies for organisations doing business in the global arena.

This programme offers a unique curriculum that includes many practical examples of logistics and supply chain management (SCM) in action. We are one of very few university programmes in the UK which has been accredited by both the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) and the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply (CIPS). This means that students are recognised by these professional bodies as holding their professional qualifications to full professional status level 6 upon completion of the Masters programme. Students participate in CILT and CIPS activities including the CILT annual student conference. Students will visit industrial locations, have seminars given by guest speakers from industry and collaborate with business partners for dissertation projects.

In the final stage of the programme, all students will undertake a consultant project organised by the university, which has been highly valued by previous students.
