You'll learn to link theoretical and practical knowledge with analytical skills, communicate complex ideas, and design, plan, organise and deliver a research report reflecting professional standards. You'll also gain membership to the Chartered Management Institute (CMI).

The course is assessed through a 5,000 word research proposal, with marks awarded according to the University guidelines, and a 8,000 to 10,000 word dissertation.

Modular structure

This course is delivered online. Research Methods comprising a series of lectures is followed by a four-week period during which students will write a research proposal. The dissertation will be written over three months.

Modules:
-Research Methods (20 credits). This module will consist of looking at various issues such as research philosophy, developing research questions, literature sources, understanding of qualitative and quantitative methods, and exploring ethical issues.

Moving to one campus

Between 2016 and 2020 we're investing £125 million in the London Metropolitan University campus, moving all of our activity to our current Holloway campus in Islington, north London. This will mean the teaching location of some courses will change over time.

Whether you will be affected will depend on the duration of your course, when you start and your mode of study. The earliest moves affecting new students will be in September 2017. Programme structure

The programme is delivered in a modular format and is next commencing in September 2018. The main taught part of the programme is delivered over 21 months, followed by completion of a Capstone Project. Participants will complete the full programme within 27 months.

The design of the modules reflects consideration given to the balance between participant and employer investment and maintaining work-life balance. For most participants, attending modules will mean taking one day a month from their normal working week and one day from their weekend with modules commencing Friday lunchtime and ending early Saturday evening.

Most of the core courses will run over three months, with one day per course on each of three weekends (with the exception of Strategic Leadership which will be taught in a series of three blocks across both years). Option courses will be delivered in the middle of Year 2 and will be taught in intensive one-week blocks. Between modules, participants will work on assignments and undertake further reading and study, supported by online resources and discussion forums.

The Executive MBA is primarily delivered in a classroom format, but learning is supported by extensive electronic resources and the opportunity to discuss ideas and concepts with colleagues and tutors through regular discussion forums. This Executive MBA is not a distance-learning programme: on-campus attendance at courses is required at regular intervals as outlined in the programme structure. You should verify your eligibility to study in the UK before applying.

The programme combines rigorous academic study with practical application. This is achieved both in the classroom through case studies but also via assessments that directly relate to the participants’ own organisations. There will also be opportunities to undertake consultancy-style project work with external organisations, to broaden participants’ insights into alternative business models and approaches.

The MSc in Educational Leadership (with Specialist Qualification for Headship) is a work-based Master’s course designed to enable aspiring school leaders and managers to gain a Master’s degree which contributes to the development of the knowledge, understanding and skills required to allow them to articulate and enact informed strategic vision, values and aims in relation to professional practice.

The MSc in Educational Leadership course has at its heart the Specialist Qualification for Headship (SQH) which is embedded in the Into Headship modules. This element of the programme will be accredited by the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS) and so this work-based Master’s course incorporates both a professional and academic award.

The development of the Into Headship modules is the result of an ongoing formal collaboration with the Scottish College for Educational Leadership (SCEL), Local Authorities, the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS), Education Scotland, four other Universities and the highly successful SQH Western Consortium (Universities of Glasgow, Stirling and Strathclyde). Building on the success and impact of previous programmes, including the MSc in Educational Leadership (with Scottish Qualification for Headship), this new programme is designed to take account of current policy and the professional standards framework (GTCS, 2012) to offer participants an opportunity to develop strategic leadership and management competencies.

The programme, which is introduced for the first time in 2015, offers an opportunity for participants to further develop their professional learning and strategic leadership and management practices in a supportive, flexible, creative and challenging learning environment.

Accreditation

The Into Headship modules EDUP021 (Into Headship 1) and EDUP022 (Into Headship 2) will be accredited by the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS).

Structure and content

The MSc in Educational Leadership (with Specialist Qualification for Headship) programme will comprise three stages:

Middle Leadership
Into Headship
Extended Induction

Prior to 2018 candidates may undertake EDUP021 Into Headship 1 and EEDUP022 Into Headship 2 as a Postgraduate Certificate. After 2018 these modules will form the Diploma stage of this qualification.

Stage one: Middle Leadership

The aim of this stage is to develop an understanding of the principles underpinning middle leadership for those aspiring to lead and manage the improvement of educational practices which impact on outcomes for children and young people in their setting and/or wider educational community. During stage one students will undertake one of the core modules, either EDUP001 Engaging critically with professional practices (20 credits at SCQF level 11) or EDUP007 Examining Professional Practices: Work-Based Learning (20 credits at SCQF level 11), then complete the Postgraduate Certificate with EDUP003 Middle Leadership: principles and practices (40 credits at SCQF level 11).

Stage Two: Into Headship

The aim of this stage is to foster a future orientated strategic stance to initiate and lead change for improvement through engagement with the school community. This will be achieved through building and applying sound knowledge and understanding of strategic leadership and management theories and practices in the context of the role of the headteacher. The modules will enable participants to develop an understanding of the place of values in leading a school community and explore ways of addressing some of the challenges this poses as well as enhancing the interpersonal and personal skills, confidence and resilience for those preparing to move into headship. This stage will provide an opportunity to develop practice in the use of critical enquiry and reflection to enhance participants’ strategic leadership practices and to evaluate and strengthen the impact of these practices on the school community. This stage is designed to enable participants to develop the strategic leadership and management competences as specified by the by the appropriate professional standards provided by the GTCS in Scotland to facilitate their transition into headship.

Stage Three: Extended Induction

During stage three participants will complete the MSc in Educational Leadership (with Specialist Qualification for Headship) through undertaking the final two modules in the programme EDUP023 Extended Induction 1 (20 credits SCQF level 11) and EDUP024 Extended Induction 2 (40 credits SCQF level 11)

Delivery and assessment

This course is offered on a part-time basis only. The period of study is normally three years for the MSc, although this programme is unlikely to be taken over three consecutive years. Candidates must complete six modules for the MSc degree. The modules will be delivered through a blended learning format designed to facilitate both individual and collaborative work. The format is a mix of face-to-face seminar days, guided self-study, online and work-based learning.

Employability

Flexible study routes

The MBA with a specialism in Leadership Studies can be taken as part of the Flexible Learning route. It’s designed to fit with your demanding work responsibilities.

Usually, you'll take the course part-time on a modular basis over three years but it can also be taken from between two years and six years.

Based on the core curriculum of the Strathclyde MBA, the programme uses a combination of formal courses, self-study through supported distance learning, practical training and project work.

Accreditation

Less than 1% of business schools in the world hold "triple accreditation", and Strathclyde is one of them. The three international accrediting bodies are:
- The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business
- The European Quality Improvement System
- The Association of MBAs

Entry requirements

Our selection process is designed to identify talented professionals from a wide range of academic, business and cultural backgrounds.

While there are formal requirements for entry listed below, we take into consideration:
- your potential
- your interpersonal and team working qualities
- the range and nature of your managerial experience

In order to assess these skills we ask you to complete a number of essays outlining your experience and aspirations alongside references supporting your work experience and academic record.

We may ask you to undertake a formal interview to discuss your achievements and aspirations. We would encourage you to visit the school or centre you’re applying to and to ask as many questions as you need to clarify your decision.

Qualifications & experience

For entry to the MBA with a specialism in leadership studies programme you must:
- hold a degree from a UK university, or equivalent academic qualification from a comparable non-UK institution. If you studied for your undergraduate degree at a non-UK institution we will need a copy of your degree transcript. Professional qualifications will also be considered.
- be at least 28 years of age.
- have a minimum of three years' full-time postgraduate experience where the management of people and resources has played a significant role.

Admissions testing

Although the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) is not a standard requirement of our admissions process, strong verbal reasoning and numerical abilities are critical for the MBA and we may ask you to undertake such a test.

Competence in English

The MBA programme is highly interactive and requires a high level of competence in English speaking, writing, reading and understanding.
A minimum score of 6.5 in IELTS is required for applicants whose first language is not English. We may consider applicants who fall slightly below these standards if they're willing to undertake pre-sessional study.

Computer competence

In order to undertake the Diploma/MBA you need to be competent in word processing, the use of spreadsheets and in report writing.

Learning & teaching

A mix of teaching and learning methods are used. There is distance learning via texts, case studies, exercises and tutor support. There's also residential days at the Leadership Trust Foundation and intensive seminars at Strathclyde Business School.
The whole programme requires about 1,800 hours of course and workshop attendance, private study and project work over three years. You should allow five to ten hours a week for private study.

What you will study on the MSc Strategic Marketing?

Teaching - how is the MSc Strategic Marketing taught?

Lectures

Lectures are a useful way to discuss key material or approaches, deal with issues, explore questions, concepts and theories, or introduce business case study material. During lectures, note taking and listening are essential as they will help you to make sense of what you have seen and heard, to identify and remember key points to understand difficult concepts and organise your material by making links and associations with other material.

Seminars

For small groups – these are structured, student-led sessions in which you might explore ideas in discussion, carry out practical tasks, or practice your research skills. All of these sessions are intended to provide forms of space in which you can discuss and share ideas; as well as develop skills and materials in preparation for assessments. In seminars, reading module materials, note taking and participating in discussion are essential. Actively participating and engaging in seminar discussion enhances presentation skills and the articulation of arguments and ideas and helps you prepare materials for assessment tasks.

Group or individual tutorials

Include structured, formal and informal feedback from your tutors on work in progress or on your ideas for a specific module assignment or project task.

Self-directed/ independent learning

Much of your learning at university takes place outside class sessions. This encourages autonomous learning, providing you with the opportunity for critical self-reflection or space for self-directed reading or research. An example might be a research or practical project linked to a module's learning outcomes that you undertake independently or with a small group supported by your tutor.

​The 20Twenty Leadership Programme, supported by funding from ESF, is designed specifically for Small and Medium Sized Enterprises. The overall aim of the programme is to promote sustainable business growth by developing the critical leadership and business skills that employees need to meet the formidable expansion challenges facing businesses in Wales. More than 240 companies have benefited from the programme so far, with more than 90 percent reporting an increase in sales turnover, employment, productivity and profits.

​Course Content​

The programme duration is 10 months and this is divided into six, two day workshops. The first half of the programme is designed to acknowledge and develop your own leadership style through a series of practical workshops and individual executive coaching. In the second half of the programme, a series of Master classes are provided on innovation and new thinking on a variety of business themes - including, Lean processes, creating a brand, maximising sales and making the business 'investor ready'.

The practical elements introduced throughout the programme are supported by opportunities to achieve a range of qualifications from the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) including a CMI level 7 Certificate in Leadership together with a Postgraduate Certificate (PgC) in Sustainable Leadership. Following successful completion of the PgC, 60 Master-level credits will be obtained and these credits can be used towards the new Executive MBA​. Students also have the option of continuing their studies to achieve the designation Chartered Manager or 'CMgr'.

However, the main objective of 20Twenty Leadership programme is to get participants to develop a three-year growth strategy for their business. Hence all the workshops and assignments are based around the needs of the business in driving sustainable growth. This is what makes this programme different from other leadership development programmes - it will provide sustainable results with tangible benefits.

Each group of participants partake in a series of Workshops, Action Learning Sets, Master-Classes, Business Mentoring and Executive Coaching, focusing on key areas such as:

The Educational Leadership PGCert is for practising educators in any educational sector, particularly those in leadership roles or aspiring leaders. You will develop both 'know how' and 'know why' in relation to educational leadership.

On completing the course you will have a good, critical understanding of:
-Current thinking and key issues of leadership and strategic management of educational institutions
-Relevant leadership theories and their significance for educational leadership

The course will help you to use approaches of practitioner enquiry as a means for professional practice, educational effectiveness and improvement of educational organisations.

At the beginning of the course, you will be asked to complete a formatively assessed written task to tailor the teaching and reading list to your development needs. This personalised approach has been identified by previous students as a particular strength of the course.

Through the educational leadership enquiry task you will acquire a critical understanding of research methodologies, methods and theory of research, and practical experience in approaches to encourage educational effectiveness and improvement.

Course tutors are active scholars, have had or hold leadership roles within the education sector and all teach and supervise across a range of courses. This provides them with a wide knowledge base and a genuine concern for the challenges of educational contexts. The PGCert in Educational Leadership is led by the director of the North Leadership Centre, René Koglbauer.

The course draws on the expertise developed in the North Leadership Centre and the Research Centre for Learning and Teaching which are based in the School of Education, Communication and Language Sciences.

The North Leadership Centre is one of the seven founding partners of NETSP (North East Teaching Schools Partnership), which holds the license for the National Leadership Curriculum by the National College for Teaching and Leadership:
-National Professional Qualification for Middle Leadership (NPQML)
-National Professional Qualification for Senior Leadership (NPQSL)
-National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH)

Delivery

The course is made up of two modules. The first module is taught in evening sessions (from 4.30pm to 7pm) during the autumn term. The second module is taught in two full days and an evening session during the spring term. In addition, you will have the opportunity to attend tutorials with the module leaders.

Sessions are taught interactively. Weekly tasks are built into the course so that you actively contribute to each session. The learning from the modules extends into practical and reflective engagement with the workplace.

Modules can be combined with other Master's level credits (including the PGCE), to complete a full Master's with a dissertation.

Placements

You are expected to work or volunteer in a professional educational setting. This provides the context for much of your practitioner enquiry.

You undertake 360-degree diagnostic appraisal and personal action planning to develop your effectiveness. You also use action learning to help you lead a real service-improvement project that’s relevant to your role and your organisation.

You will develop the necessary knowledge and skills to achieve this by studying topics such as improvement science, tools and techniques, a multi-perspective approach to determining and measuring performance, project design and audit, and evaluation research methods.
