Moving to one campus

Between 2016 and 2020 we're investing £125 million in the London Metropolitan University campus, moving all of our activity to our current Holloway campus in Islington, north London. This will mean the teaching location of some courses will change over time.

Whether you will be affected will depend on the duration of your course, when you start and your mode of study. The earliest moves affecting new students will be in September 2017. This may mean you begin your course at one location, but over the duration of the course you are relocated to one of our other campuses. Our intention is that no full-time student will change campus more than once during a course of typical duration.

All students will benefit from our move to one campus, which will allow us to develop state-of-the-art facilities, flexible teaching areas and stunning social spaces.

The MSc in Educational Leadership (with Specialist Qualification for Headship) is a work-based Master’s course designed to enable aspiring school leaders and managers to gain a Master’s degree which contributes to the development of the knowledge, understanding and skills required to allow them to articulate and enact informed strategic vision, values and aims in relation to professional practice.

The MSc in Educational Leadership course has at its heart the Specialist Qualification for Headship (SQH) which is embedded in the Into Headship modules. This element of the programme will be accredited by the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS) and so this work-based Master’s course incorporates both a professional and academic award.

The development of the Into Headship modules is the result of an ongoing formal collaboration with the Scottish College for Educational Leadership (SCEL), Local Authorities, the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS), Education Scotland, four other Universities and the highly successful SQH Western Consortium (Universities of Glasgow, Stirling and Strathclyde). Building on the success and impact of previous programmes, including the MSc in Educational Leadership (with Scottish Qualification for Headship), this new programme is designed to take account of current policy and the professional standards framework (GTCS, 2012) to offer participants an opportunity to develop strategic leadership and management competencies.

The programme, which is introduced for the first time in 2015, offers an opportunity for participants to further develop their professional learning and strategic leadership and management practices in a supportive, flexible, creative and challenging learning environment.

Accreditation

The Into Headship modules EDUP021 (Into Headship 1) and EDUP022 (Into Headship 2) will be accredited by the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS).

Structure and content

The MSc in Educational Leadership (with Specialist Qualification for Headship) programme will comprise three stages:

Middle Leadership

Into Headship

Extended Induction

Prior to 2018, candidates may undertake EDUP021 Into Headship 1 and EEDUP022 Into Headship 2 as a Postgraduate Certificate. After 2018 these modules will form the Diploma stage of this qualification.

Stage one: Middle Leadership

The aim of this stage is to develop an understanding of the principles underpinning middle leadership for those aspiring to lead and manage the improvement of educational practices which impact on outcomes for children and young people in their setting and/or wider educational community. During stage one students will undertake one of the core modules, either EDUP001 Engaging critically with professional practices (20 credits at SCQF level 11) or EDUP007 Examining Professional Practices: Work-Based Learning (20 credits at SCQF level 11), then complete the Postgraduate Certificate with EDUP003 Middle Leadership: principles and practices (40 credits at SCQF level 11).

Stage Two: Into Headship

The aim of this stage is to foster a future orientated strategic stance to initiate and lead change for improvement through engagement with the school community. This will be achieved through building and applying sound knowledge and understanding of strategic leadership and management theories and practices in the context of the role of the headteacher. The modules will enable participants to develop an understanding of the place of values in leading a school community and explore ways of addressing some of the challenges this poses as well as enhancing the interpersonal and personal skills, confidence and resilience for those preparing to move into headship. This stage will provide an opportunity to develop practice in the use of critical enquiry and reflection to enhance participants’ strategic leadership practices and to evaluate and strengthen the impact of these practices on the school community. This stage is designed to enable participants to develop the strategic leadership and management competences as specified by the by the appropriate professional standards provided by the GTCS in Scotland to facilitate their transition into headship.

Stage Three: Extended Induction

During stage three participants will complete the MSc in Educational Leadership (with Specialist Qualification for Headship) through undertaking the final two modules in the programme EDUP023 Extended Induction 1 (20 credits SCQF level 11) and EDUP024 Extended Induction 2 (40 credits SCQF level 11)

Career path

Emergencies and disasters have increased globally over the past 20 years and this trend is set to remain high. Organisations across the UK including the National Health Service (NHS), the emergency services, local government, HM Armed Forces and the private sector need to develop the ability to respond to a variety of major incidents and to manage recovery locally, regionally or nationally and internationally within the context of the UK Civil Contingencies Act (2004) and other international legislation.

Each major organisation will have in place a Major Incident Plan that is built upon the principles of risk assessment and emergency planning skills. Most organisations have set up emergency planning departments and career opportunities exist in working in the field of emergency planning at local, regional and national and international levels. This course will give you the advanced underpinning theories, principles and concepts of emergency planning resilience and response and enable you to engage with strategic and national and international guidelines in practice.

Students undertaking this course may already be working in the field of emergency planning or on the front line in accident and emergency services, etc. It is envisaged that students will develop strategic leadership skills and develop further their multi-agency working. The course is built upon best practice and will enable students to gain the knowledge and skills to implement the strategies outlined in the Civil Contingencies Act (2004) and other national policies and guidelines.

Many of our students go on to achieve new jobs and/or promotion as a result of their studies. Often this happens during their course not only after completion. Participating in academic study at all levels will encourage analysis and criticality and hence will improve the opportunity for promotion and advancement. Successful completion of an academic qualification will facilitate students in providing a justification for progression through the skills escalator and will often act as a catalyst to enable the student to pass through the band gateways. This may be an opportunity for you to move into this area of work on completion of your studies.

Teaching - how is the MSc Strategic Marketing taught?

Lectures

Lectures are a useful way to discuss key material or approaches, deal with issues, explore questions, concepts and theories, or introduce business case study material. During lectures, note taking and listening are essential as they will help you to make sense of what you have seen and heard, to identify and remember key points to understand difficult concepts and organise your material by making links and associations with other material.

Seminars

For small groups – these are structured, student-led sessions in which you might explore ideas in discussion, carry out practical tasks, or practice your research skills. All of these sessions are intended to provide forms of space in which you can discuss and share ideas; as well as develop skills and materials in preparation for assessments. In seminars, reading module materials, note taking and participating in discussion are essential. Actively participating and engaging in seminar discussion enhances presentation skills and the articulation of arguments and ideas and helps you prepare materials for assessment tasks.

Group or individual tutorials

Self-directed/ independent learning

Much of your learning at university takes place outside class sessions. This encourages autonomous learning, providing you with the opportunity for critical self-reflection or space for self-directed reading or research. An example might be a research or practical project linked to a module's learning outcomes that you undertake independently or with a small group supported by your tutor.

Assessment

As a leader of people or projects you and your work-related practice will take centre stage throughout the duration of your Master’s degree. Experienced staff members will guide your development and encourage you to think about the effectiveness of your practice and how to develop strategies to ensure that you and your organisation achieve your ambitions.

With a focus on strategic sport leadership, the reflective sport leader and leading research/ work based evaluation, the course aims to provide you with the confidence to analyse sport and education related practices and to equip you with further knowledge and skills for a successful career in contemporary sports environments.

FURTHER INFORMATION

Workshop attendance will be expected every four weeks on a Friday (9.30am-4.30pm, full-time) and (9.30am-12.30pm or 1.30pm-4.30pm, part-time). Eight sessions in total in the academic year plus an induction.

Workshops will be supplemented with online resources.

The course consists of four modules followed by a dissertation / work based evaluation. The first two modules are: Strategic Sport Leadership and The Reflective Sport Leader. By completing these two modules you would be eligible for the Postgraduate Certificate in Sport Leadership and Professional Development.

The Strategic Sport Leadership module aims to develop critical awareness of various leadership approaches and frameworks in order to critically appraise their relevance and effectiveness within an appropriate sporting environment. The module also aims to enable students to critically analyse theory and practice in relation to prevailing cultures within organisations and the implications of change.

The aim of the Reflective Sport Leader module is to provide students with the opportunity to become better critical thinkers, critically reflective leaders and problem solvers. It aims to help leaders to develop confidence in their perceptions and learn to question their values, beliefs, assumptions and interpretations of their leadership context from their position of competence.

These are followed by the Research Foundations for Sport Leadership and Research Methods for Sport Leaders modules. By completing these two additional modules students would be eligible for the Postgraduate Diploma in Sport Leadership and Professional Development.

The Research Foundations for Sport Leadership module focuses on developing awareness of conducting ‘insider’ practitioner inquiry and informing methodological decisions. It seeks to broaden the students’ appreciation of how these foundations should influence the collection of data and subsequent analysis. The module seeks to develop an understanding of research ethics and tensions and the value of reflexivity within their research.

The aim of the Research Methods for Sport Leaders module is to enable students to critically analyse a range of methods that are used in practitioner research, to be able to locate these beside methodological decisions and critically analyse approaches that are adopted to analyse data in order to inform practice. The module will also aim to support the students’ development as researching practitioners and help them to refine a research strategy.

The programme will culminate in the completion of the dissertation/ work based evaluation. The aim of this module is to allow sport leaders to relate the knowledge and understanding that they have acquired on the programme in order to undertake a significant piece of research/work based evaluation within a relevant sports setting. It also aims to provide the students with an opportunity to exhibit their skills to enhance and develop an area of their work and to make a meaningful contribution in practice. Upon successful completion of this module participants will be awarded the Master’s degree.
