The Master of Design in Strategic Foresight and Innovation is creating a new kind of designer: A strategist who sees the world from a human perspective and re-thinks what is possible; An innovator who can imagine, plan and develop a better world.

Recognizing the increasing importance and need for new thinking skills to positively impact society, enhance business success and manage organizational change, this innovative program was launched in 2009 to address these issues and opportunities. Emphasis is placed on teaching complex problem finding, framing and solving, to envision and develop sustainable futures.

With an interdisciplinary, co-creative approach only possible at an art and design university, the entrepreneur, social scientist, artist, designer, and engineer will develop together the skills required for leading innovation. Our program prepares graduates to think holistically - exploring, challenging and finding meaning in order to reframe and guide both present and future actions.

Small class sizes and access to outstanding faculty and experts foster new learning opportunities: students practise foresight to envision possible futures; study systems to see the bigger picture; and explore human factors for a broader understanding of motivation and behaviour. This allows students to lead innovation, generating insight-driven ideas that will result in new possibilities, new outcomes and new opportunities for the world.

Program options

The MDes in Strategic Foresight and Innovation is offered as:

a part-time two-year (seven-semester) program
a full-time 16-month (four-semester) program (as of September 2013)
Both programs consist of 7.5 credits.

Objectives

Students will develop design-thinking skills that include analysis, synthesis and strategic and creative thinking, which are critical for professionals in the public, private and voluntary sectors. The program will develop students’ expertise in foresight, research and innovation methodologies and will enable them to acquire sufficient contextual knowledge to develop intelligent, innovative, visionary and future-enhancing solutions in their culminating projects.

Upon completion of the course, students will be ready to tackle the complexity of real-world issues as future-conscious developers of ideas and solutions, and entrepreneurial co-creators.

The program will enable students to:

explore and test innovative methods of organization, creation and production from a human perspective;
develop strategic, innovative and anticipatory solutions (strategic foresight) and implementation plans for design, business or policy innovations, or for organizational or infrastructural change;
navigate complex problems and find solutions that will lead to the development of new and sustainable futures.

Students will be engaged in a collaborative, co-creative studio environment in their core directed studio classes. Working in trans-disciplinary teams on many projects, students will benefit from the diverse backgrounds of their faculty and fellow students.

Programme structure

The Glasgow MBA begins with laying the foundations of leadership through three core-learning experiences. You are then given the opportunity to specialise in finance, marketing or strategy. You may also explore additional business subjects such as business analytics, entrepreneurship, supply chain management and business sustainability. An important part of our MBA is the team-consulting project that happens towards the end of the year and is an opportunity for you to bring theory into practice and tackle real life business scenarios. The final stage of your MBA is your dissertation. You will work on this from May to September on a topic agreed between you and your supervisor.

Core courses

1. Decision making under uncertainty

You will learn about the intellectual perspectives and methods that underpin the practice of making decisions essential for business management. In this course you will explore the many different disciplinary and methodological traditions that should inform effective analyses of the business world. You will also learn how informed thinking and analysis will assist you in making decisions and delivering better business outcomes.

2. Business strategic management

This course integrates five key business disciplines from a strategic perspective which are covered in modules. These are strategy (dynamic strategic management), HR and operations (developing your leadership through people and resources), marketing (strategic marketing), finance (financial analysis and decision-making), and business environment (global economics). You will develop the skills expected of senior managers and be capable of developing a career in any leading organisation. This learning experience ends with a week-long intense team-consulting project where you will be challenged to cover and to integrate the areas/subjects studied both in the core courses as well as in the electives.

3. Strategic foresight

This course is designed to broaden your perspective by encouraging you to listen and think about tangible strategic challenges, in both local and international contexts, which are presented to you by experienced business leaders, entrepreneurs, consultants and/or public servants. Guest speakers cover issues such as:

  • How is technology and innovation shaping organisations? Is it disruptive?
  • Is globalisation still alive in the twenty-first century?
  • How are millennials changing or influencing organisational cultures?
  • To what extent do local (national) procedures and regulations support or inhibit a business internationalisation agenda?
  • How do risk management and responses to uncertainty present themselves in day-to-day strategic implementation?
  • How are Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), Environmental Protection and/or Ethical Behaviours embraced and introduced during strategic discussions?

Through guided discussions after each presentation and case-discussions complementing these topics, you will learn to develop skills to articulate previous and potential future responses to strategic challenges, and the likely effectiveness of these responses. 

Following the core courses you will pick five optional courses, enabling you to specialise in finance, strategy or marketing. The courses on offer vary each year and are taught by a range of leading academics and practitioners, based on their research or personal experience of the corporate world.

What's covered in the course?

The course is founded on the principal that participants intend to attain membership of the RICS. The programme therefore embraces the values of the RICS and reflects the requirements of the professional body in terms of core technical and professional skills and attributes. All students are expected to be student or graduate members of the RICS.

The course content and delivery is underpinned by the need to respond to the RICS Strategic Foresight 2030 report, including incorporation of the seven strategic pillars for the future within learning, teaching and assessment.

Course structure

Delivery of the MA in Global Media Business is divided between Beijing and Westminster’s Harrow campus. The first semester is taught by UK faculty staff making regular visits to Beijing. They deliver the programme in intensive teaching blocks, typically of 2-4 days teaching.

Block mode teaching is interspersed by guided independent study and project work. Downloadable lectures and supplementary information is provided via the University’s Virtual Learning Environment. Tutors are also available for remote tutorials using services such as Collaborate, Skype or WeChat.

The MSc in Integrated Product Design course focuses on the design of innovative products, emphasising the balance between the interest of users, industry and society. It covers the whole design process, integrating all aspects relevant to product development, in particular global new product design.

It meets industrial demand by integrating technology, management, aesthetics, environmental sustainability, ergonomics, marketing, business and design methods – to produce highly qualified and sought after designers able to cope with the challenges the global economy presents.

Specifically, the course aims to:

Provide an integrated programme of study across a broad range of knowledge and skills in product/industrial design
Develop design and technology research skills related to the design process through practicing applied research
Develop advanced design skills, enabling graduates to practice as an independent design professional and to further develop design and professional skills in product/industrial design engineering
Nurture scientific rigour as well as creativity to enable graduates to follow a successful career in product/industrial design and assume leadership roles in national and international companies and institutions.

Aims

Students master all aspects of integrated product design advancing their design skills and knowledge by applying systematic state-of-the-art theories and methodologies, and by integrating user, technology and business aspects. This not only opens up dynamic career options, but equips students with a comprehensive skillset to take into the commercial world.

The primary aim of this programme is to provide students with the practical knowledge and transferable skills required to be at the forefront of global product and services design research and development, in either an industrial or academic environment.
Graduates of this MSc will also have the independent learning ability required for both continual professional development and the acquisition of new skills at the highest level.

The course provides an integrated approach and promotes advanced studies in design theory, creativity and aesthetics, innovation methods, advanced design techniques, human factors and applied ergonomics, engineering, material and production science, sustainability and research methods.

Course Content

The first term includes three taught modules worth a total of 45 credits plus one double module of 30 credits which continues into the second term alongside three further modules. The thick module, Professional Design Studio, will include guest lectures, research seminars and group or individual project. The projects can be based on design research or product/industrial design.

The ‘Design Futures’ module will introduce the importance and potential value of future foresight techniques and develop a vision of the future and critically evaluate its implications for design, innovation and enabling technology.

The ‘Computer Aided Design and Manufacturing Techniques’ module will introduce CAD and graphics based design modelling, rendering techniques and tools, product design simulation techniques and tools, rapid prototyping and manufacturing techniques.

For the final four months of the programme (June to September), students can either continue their projects to greater depth as their dissertation project, or undertake a new subject. Students are encouraged to form industrial links as part of this project.

Assessment

Work in each module is predominantly assessed through practical project assignments including both individual and group work. The dissertation makes up a third of the overall degree and may include a substantial practical design element, but in all cases will be assessed through a final 20,000 word submission.
