What you will study

This course focuses on strategic entrepreneurial marketing and the development of new business models and value propositions based on in-depth insights of both customer and industry/market sector analysis.

It has a clear emphasis on the strategic utilisation of digital marketing theory, strategy, tools and tactics as well as analysis and evaluation of key analytics and metrics in meeting organisational key performance indicators.

You’ll study 180 credits on the course. These credits are made up of the following modules:

- Digital Marketing Management (September – December)
On this module you will learn key aspects of strategic digital marketing planning as well as the changing nature of customer markets and strategic business models. You will be expected to set strategic digital marketing objectives to meet strategic business aims.

- Strategic Entrepreneurial Marketing (September – December)
Gain an understanding of key constructs associated with Strategic Entrepreneurial Marketing, Strategic Entrepreneurial Marketing interfaces with business strategy; and the differentiation between Strategic Entrepreneurial Marketing, and normative marketing planning and management.

- Content Marketing and PR (January to March)
You will be provided with a solid foundation for writing and factual story-telling as well as verbal communication within a marketing and PR context.

- Digital Tools, Technologies and Metrics (January to March)
You will learn about how digital tools and technologies can be used to engage and influence customer conversations and interactions as well as customer retention. You’ll also understand and critique best practice and relevant tools and technologies, application, remuneration and controls to deliver results and find out about how digital tools and technologies interface with business activities to meet strategic aims and objectives.

- Campaign Planning for Marketing and PR (April – May)
On this module you will learn about key constructs associated with Campaign Planning for Marketing and PR; and how strategic digital Campaign Planning for Marketing and PR interfaces with overall organisation strategies and actions.

- Research Methods
Develop your understanding and skills of research in a management and/or professional development context whilst undertaking a critical review of research methodologies and methods.

- Dissertation
A significant piece of research into an appropriate area of study.

Learning and teaching methods

The course is delivered full-time daily and is term-based. Part time students, depending on prior qualifications and experience will be counselled on the flexible options available to them.

You will study through a series of lectures, workshops and internship/work-based learning. The course team work closely with digital marketing professionals who co-deliver elements of the course.

Teaching staff come from a range of academic and practitioner backgrounds. Their expertise comes from a wide range of private and public practice areas as well as academic and research-focussed subjects.

Alumni form an important part of delivery through communicating experiences and inspiring our students. Through social media, we have captured graduates who have studied the course and related modules. It is hoped that this group will facilitate networking and information sharing. What you will study

This Masters course is delivered in three distinct stages which comprises of 180 academic credits. During your first stage you will be introduced to key management principles and theories, followed by a secondary stage that is designed to continue to build and develop your existing knowledge. The final stage of the course will focus research and application to live projects, alongside a critical understanding of concepts covered throughout.

Stage One

- Purchasing Principles and Management (20 credits)*
Compare and contrast the strategic links between procurement, purchasing and the notion of supply chain management, this module is aimed at developing your ability to effectively and ethically manage supply as a holistic process.

- Strategic Operations Management and Operational Research (20 credits)*
Develop your ability and skills in strategic operational management tools and techniques with an appreciation of operational processes, planning and control systems.

- Sustainable Supply Chain Management (20 credits)*
Explore the strategic need, role and value for logistics, purchasing and supply chain research within organisations in order to achieve sustainable supply chain networks in the future.

Stage 2

- Commercial Relationships (20 credits)*
Gain a critical understanding of the contribution of strategic accounting information to decision making in business. You’ll be introduced to major-themes underlying trading law with commercial and consumer contracts.

- Advanced Procurement (20 credits)
Examine the strategic internal and external relationships required to manage procurement and purchasing and supply, and the new and innovative cutting-edge procurement and purchasing principles and philosophies.

- Research Methods (20 credits)
Develop your understanding and research skills in a management and/or professional development context; critically reviewing a range of research methodologies and methods of providing management information for decision making.

Stage 3

- Dissertation in Purchasing, Logistics, Supply Chain (60 credits)
You’ll be required to produce an extended piece of written postgraduate research, involving a significant piece of student-directed learning, based on a detailed investigation into a key area.

Footnote: *Exemptions are available on the above modules to holders of MCIPS and the CIPS Graduate Diploma with the option of entry onto a 18 months Fast Track programme block delivered on weekends.

Learning and teaching method

The teaching approach involves a blend of styles with an emphasis on an interactive environment. You will learn through lectures, seminars, group work, case studies, and analyses of contemporary issues in strategic procurement management. Part-time delivery is designed around the needs of practising industry professionals and takes place at weekends, where you come to the University’s Treforest Campus for one weekend every six weeks.

Students who already hold the CIPS Graduate Diploma, or equivalent, will be eligible for exemptions and entry to an 18-month fast-track programme (weekends) which starts in April.

The University also has the The Procurement Best Practice Academy which carries out research and consultancy. This means that the latest research and industry best practice are used to teach students.

All full-time members of staff in the purchasing and supply team are fellows or senior fellows of the Higher Education Academy.

Work Experience and Employment Prospects

Providing you with the transferable skills to develop in a strategic role in a growing field of business, this qualification will enable you to build a sustainable and rewarding career in private and/or public sector organisations.

The Masters in Strategic Hotel Management is an intellectually rigorous programme, drawing on a range of our subject and industry experts, that is relevant to the needs of future senior managers, executives and professionals in the hotel industry.

As the preparations for the New Urban Agenda by UN Habitat III signals, the agenda of urban planners in the 21st century will become tighter. Cities and city regions will continue growing in size and function. Challenges derive directly from ‘external’ processes like globalisation, climate change and migration. The city and city region is also inscribed as central element into the growth model of the modern society.

These challenges translate into the domain of planning, with newly emerging forms of collective plan-making and new governance arrangements taking shape. In a positive sense, urban development is negotiated and created in urban future laboratories. How can planners deal with these changing circumstances, and add value to both the bottom-up emerging local initiatives and revise the top-down approaches towards managing spatial development.

What you’ll study

The MSS is in two parts—a taught and a research component.

The taught component starts with a core course and a range of approved courses.

As well as Strategic Studies courses, you can choose from selected International Relations and Political Science courses.

For the research component you can choose between a 60-point dissertation and a combination of a 30-point research essay or project and approved taught courses.

You may get permission from the head of school to do a 90-point thesis in place of the part two research component and some part one courses.

Postgraduate Diploma in Strategic Studies

You can choose to study only the taught courses and get a PGDipSS. If you later complete the research courses you’ll receive your MSS in place of the PGDipSS.

Workload

If you are studying full time you can expect a workload of 40–45 hours a week for much of the year. Part-time students doing two courses per trimester will need to do around 20–23 hours of work a week. Make sure you take this into account if you are working.

You can estimate your workload by adding up the number of points you'll be doing. One point is roughly equal to 10–12 hours work.

Duration

The MSS will usually take 12 months for full-time students and 24 months for part-time students.

The PGDipSS generally takes two trimesters full time or four trimesters part time.

Our MSc Strategic Quality Management has been adopted by Hewlett Packard (HP) since 2010 to build on its Lean Sigma Black Belt training for specially selected staff. The course is very flexible. You can either study full-time or part-time in Portsmouth in a classroom environment.

This well-established course comprises four units followed by a dissertation:

Business Transformation through Quality Management introduces you to the fundamental concepts of Total Quality Management and Organisational Behaviour, focusing on the application of these concepts in the organisation. It includes driving a culture of continuous improvement and managing change.

Quantitative and Research Methods evaluates concepts of quantitative methods and the application of specialist statistics to aid decision-making within organisations. It also covers the theory and application of research methodologies to support organisational improvement activities. These skills are further developed in the dissertation.

Business Operations – the Quality Management Perspective will give you knowledge of business systems for quality planning, quality standards and the benefits accruing from integrated management systems and their application in the workplace to generate organisational efficiencies. It shows you how tools such as SERVQUAL, FMEA, QFD and Benchmarking can help evaluate how an organisation is performing against their strategic vision and goals.

Strategic Organisational Excellence looks at the links between concepts of excellence (as used by EFQM and other excellence models) and their use in the strategic management of an organisation. It explores issues raised by variations in culture and sector, both within the organisation and in its relationships with its stakeholders. It will also introduce you to Corporate Social Responsibility and Quality in the Supply Chain.

The Dissertation provides the opportunity to demonstrate your ability to identify, design, plan and undertake research and effectively communicate your findings in an individual research project. Your dissertation will focus on a specific quality management issue of your choice, which may relate to a work situation. You will receive one to one supervision during the dissertation.

Programme Assessment

The course uses a range of teaching methods including formal lectures, tutorials, in-class exercises and work based assignments. Classes are also interactive with the use of case studies and invited speakers. The University’s virtual learning environment (VLE) further supports student study by hosting a range of activities and resources online. There will be staff-led online tutorials with other students for distance learning. We encourage and develop critical thinking and self-directed study, with academic support from University Tutors.

Our MSc Strategic Quality Management has been adopted by Hewlett Packard (HP) since 2010 to build on its Lean Sigma Black Belt training for specially selected staff. It provides an academic dimension which encourages strategic thinking and critical awareness leading to more effective and sustainable improvement solutions. HP has reported significant benefits and major financial returns. This annual arrangement has also benefited the University with current practice within the technology sector feeding into the course.

Portsmouth Business School is a member of the European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM),) and the British Quality Foundation (BQF). On completion of the course, students are able to use their MSc qualification as part of their portfolio of evidence to apply for individual membership of the Chartered Quality Institute (CQI).

Module Details

This well-established course comprises four units followed by a dissertation:

Business Transformation through Quality Management introduces you to the fundamental concepts of Total Quality Management and Organisational Behaviour, focusing on the application of these concepts in the organisation. It includes driving a culture of continuous improvement and managing change.

Quantitative and Research Methods evaluates concepts of quantitative methods and the application of specialist statistics to aid decision-making within organisations.

Business Operations – the Quality Management Perspective will give you knowledge of business systems for quality planning, quality standards and the benefits accruing from integrated management systems and their application in the workplace to generate organisational efficiencies. It shows you how tools such as SERVQUAL, FMEA, QFD and Benchmarking can help evaluate how an organisation is performing against their strategic vision and goals.

Strategic Organisational Excellence looks at the links between concepts of excellence (as used by EFQM and other excellence models) and their use in the strategic management of an organisation. It explores issues raised by variations in culture and sector, both within the organisation and in its relationships with its stakeholders. It will also introduce you to Corporate Social Responsibility and Quality in the Supply Chain.

The Dissertation provides the opportunity to demonstrate your ability to identify, design, plan and undertake research and effectively communicate your findings in an individual research project. Your dissertation will focus on a specific quality management issue of your choice, which may relate to a work situation. You will receive one to one supervision during the dissertation.

Programme Assessment

The course uses a range of teaching methods including formal lectures, tutorials, in-class exercises and work based assignments. Classes are also interactive with the use of case studies and invited speakers. The University’s virtual learning environment (VLE) further supports student study by hosting a range of activities and resources online. There will be staff-led online tutorials with other students for distance learning. We encourage and develop critical thinking and self-directed study, with academic support from University Tutors.
