COURSE OVERVIEW

This course commences in January each year. This course provides a thorough education in editing skills in a professional filmmaking environment. Editing students are encouraged to consider their craft as part of the whole process of film and television production and not merely as the final stage, making them true collaborators, not just efficient technicians.

The emphasis of the Editing curriculum is firmly on storytelling and the relationship between editor and director. Students learn to apply their craft to the demands of fiction, documentary and animation, creating visual narratives while working with sound, music and, where appropriate, special effects. Workshops with other departments develop concepts of visual storytelling, mise-en-scène, storyboarding, sound design, music and scriptwriting.

Editing graduates have a high rate of employment on feature films, shorts and television programmes. Many new graduates quickly become editors on independent productions or assistant editors on features or TV drama, while others gravitate to visual effects, promos and i-dents. One recent graduate was joint winner of the Best Young Editor Award at Broadcast Magazine's B+ Awards. Recent graduate editing credits include Florence Foster Jenkins, Our Kind of Traitor, The Queen, Hannibal Rising, Reprise at the cinema and Downton Abbey, Paul Merton in China, Holby City, Hustle, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and Spooks on television.

Unlike other schools, all production costs are met by the School. In addition you will be given a cash Production Budget. NFTS students are engaged in more productions as part of the curriculum than any of our competitors.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

The Editing course is part of the Post Production department, where we are looking to assemble a group of students with diverse and varied backgrounds. There is no 'typical' student or perfect candidate who conforms to a mandatory list of qualifications.

You are likely to have some Industry experience or training in your chosen field. Your background may be in the arts or other media, you might be looking for a further professional qualification or wish to broaden your knowledge of film and video editing, taking you to a higher level of work.

APPLY WITH

- A DVD no more than 15 minutes running time, of material originally shot on film or video edited by you the applicant. If dialogue is not in English or the DVD does not have subtitles you should send a dialogue transcript in English via email.

- A creative video montage on DVD of found images (obtained from the television, the internet or another source) or existing film footage edited with a soundtrack. The montage should be between 2 and 5 minutes running time, edited by you the applicant. If you do not have access to an editing facility please create a montage of collected photographs which when laid out together tell a story.

The MA Independent Filmmaking programme will engage you in the production of advanced digital film products.

You will study modules in the production and technology of videography (shooting, editing, post-production), together with specialist modules in film industry practices, music video commissioning and film history and context.

Students will also be taught theoretical and historical/contextual analysis and creative processes such as visualisation and storyboarding. Graduates of this programme will have acquired the tools of critical analysis, ideas-generation and industry understanding to go on to produce successful practical projects.

The inter-relationship between theory, creativity and practice is increasingly valued by employers, and the programme builds on a strong School tradition of integrating theory and practice. This MA in Independent Filmmaking will enable you to produce cinematic projects that will be technically effective whilst being strong on content.

The MA Independent Filmmaking programme is not a ‘conventional’ film programme providing training for either narrow specialist skills or the production of 35mm feature films. Rather, it will fully prepare you for the ‘brave new world’ of film and video production in the digital age.

In the School of Media, Design and Technology we are active in getting students real work experience to coincide with their degree to develop a vast portfolio of work throughout their studies with us. To support this we have established a Digital Media Working Academy in facilitating students to work on film, television, interactive media, games and animation projects. The academy delivers up to 50 projects per year for a variety of companies, enabling students to add work experience to their CV whilst working in a professional environment.

Our partner, the National Media Museum, offers our students added value in its world-class research archives, academic and industrial conferences and symposia, screenings, festivals and exhibitions.

Learning activities and assessment

The MA Independent Filmmaking programme uses a variety of learning and teaching strategies, all of which are intended to facilitate to development of independent learning. After some initial theoretical, research and creative modules, practice will be facilitated through a series of core and optional modules that help you develop your own project ideas in partnership with tutors and supervisors. A great deal of autonomy is integrated into this programme whilst maintaining as much of a taught component as is necessary for theoretical and contextual studies.

Learning and teaching strategies include formal lectures, practical workshops, seminar and tutorial work. The types of assessment that these strategies involve (discursive essays, oral presentations, assessment of practical videographic and photographic/still image projects etc.) will allow you to effectively and independently integrate theory, creativity and practice, a key aim of the programme. As is common practice in arts and media education, and due to the creative nature and negotiated aspects of the programme, formal examinations are not used as assessments.

Career support and prospects

The University is committed to helping students develop and enhance employability and this is an integral part of many programmes. Specialist support is available throughout the course from Career and Employability Services including help to find part-time work while studying, placements, vacation work and graduate vacancies. Students are encouraged to access this support at an early stage and to use the extensive resources on the Careers website.

Discussing options with specialist advisers helps to clarify plans through exploring options and refining skills of job-hunting. In most of our programmes there is direct input by Career Development Advisers into the curriculum or through specially arranged workshops.

This course will prepare you for a career in film and television production in research, content creation, scriptwriting, camera, sound, lighting, editing, studio and location management, production management, producing and directing. Graduates have also gone on to develop their own independent film companies and teacher training.

Study Support

The Programme Leader is the academic tutor responsible for each students enrolled onto the programme. Students are expected to meet twice per semester with their Programme Leader, in a timetabled slot, but have the opportunity to see them more often via a weekly, drop-in office hour.

The pathways combine both fiction and documentary elements, and encompass a variety of new options such as script and project development, web drama, online content, and social activist filmmaking, alongside the more traditional media skills, to reflect the changing trends and diversity in the current media landscape.

Whichever pathway you choose, you'll receieve specialised film, television and multi-platform industry training. You'll also be able to produce films alongside others working in art, theatre and social media.

You'll learn how to critique existing forms and trends – pioneering creative new products that will make waves in the media and wider world. And you can benefit from an invaluable year-long mentorship with an individual or company within the industry.

Screen Lab

As well as specialist teaching, all MA Filmmaking students will attend Screen Lab, where they will advance their collaborative skills by working in teams with fiction and documentary producers and sound and edit students, on a variety of projects and at least three scheduled films across the year.

This programme is aimed at aspiring filmmakers intent on carving out a career in the creative and cultural industries through the production and distribution of fiction film content across multiple platforms. The creative industries are presently undergoing a period of radical transformation and new modes of practice are emerging. You acquire traditional celluloid filmmaking skills and also engage with digital cinema technology and practice. Explore the relationship between literature and film in an exceptionally broad array of contemporary and historical contexts, and from a variety of different perspectives. You discover cutting-edge approaches to cinematic and literary aesthetics, adaptation, and relationships between different media, reception contexts, ethics, and interfaces between theory and practice.

On our course you gain a deep understanding of the theoretical and practical interactions between literature and film, choosing specific areas of literary and cinema studies to complement your preparation for a creative practice or theoretical dissertation project of your choice. You will forge and develop connections between audio-visual and textual media. Focusing a variety of cultural productions and diverse forms of enlightenment, and entertainment, you will encounter parallel and sometimes more densely intertwined media histories, discovering the complex ways in which media anticipate, interfere with, and draw on one other.

Course detail

The course is based at Bower Ashton Campus, part of City Campus, where exceptional facilities and resources include state-of-the-art digital media, production and fabrication workshops offer a combination of traditional tools and the latest technology.
Based in Bristol, a global centre of excellence in animation, film and television production, it attracts students from around the world. Bristol is the place to study animation, home to Aardman Animations, A Productions, Arthur Cox and other internationally renowned animation companies.

Structure

The full Master's course comprises of 180 credits divided into three 60 credits stages: Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma, and Masters. Students work incrementally through the three stages and must pass all modules at each stage in order to progress to the next.

The course is taught via practical workshops, a rolling programme of guest lecturers and industry speakers and there are opportunities for work experience within the industry.

With the increased acceptance of 3D visualisation and animation in everyday use in areas as diverse as computer games development, film and television special effects, online virtual world development, architecture, product design, industrial design and marketing, the MA 3D Design for Virtual Environments is designed to enable you to develop advanced skills, knowledge and understanding within the field of 3D visualisation and computer based animation.

The programme is oriented towards current industrial needs, technology and practice and provides the key skills required to develop both practical and theoretical proficiency in any specialist area of 3D animation. The programme addresses the demand for visual designers with the creative vision and technical skills needed to support core design skill sets that exploit the animation and visualisation processes.

Working in a predominately digital environment, you will also explore the relationships between the use of video and animation materials within digital video, multimedia and web publishing. This allows for the experimentation with interactive media types and techniques in order to enhance understanding, learning and product conceptualisation.

This course commences in January each year. During this extremely practical modular course, you will spend a lot of time learning techniques “on set”, in addition to learning in front of a computer. You will work closely with students from all the other NFTS MA disciplines, creating 2D/3D VFX, CG 3D FX or Colour Grading and Onlining the entire production, on a diverse range of NFTS film and television projects – many of which go on to become international award-winners.

This course shares a common first year, allowing you to specialise in the second year in one of three areas:

COLOUR: For those who aspire to be:

At the time of writing, all the previous Digital FX graduates are in employment from Soho to São Paulo. Some are 3D CG TDs at Framestore, Double Negative and MPC in London, others SFX producers at Millennium FX, others 2D/3D compositors at The Mill, Cinesite and The Senate, others working in software development and as product specialists at Filmlight, Image Systems, Assimilate and The Foundry, and others as freelance conform editors and colourists.

CURRICULUM

This unique modular course has been designed to keep pace with changes in technology and Industry practice.

You’ll control many of your own projects from start to finish. You learn by ‘doing’ as well as understanding theory, developing a variety of practical and creative skills from planning, budgeting, storyboarding and pre-visualisation through filming, CGI creation, VFX creation and finally post production and delivery.

Several modules are shared with other departments within the NFTS - such as the popular Take One Painting project - and the Digital FX students participate individually, or as teams, on many of the other NFTS students’ film and TV projects.

You learn what to do and then get a chance to do it for real. Problem solving is paramount.

Year One begins with a series of core modules shared by all three Digital FX disciplines (Compositing, Colour, CG 3D) which the whole cohort of students undertake:
The Common Agenda; The Fundamentals (inc. Motion Graphics);3D CG (Maya); Introduction to Tracking /Match Move; Take One Painting (Maya & Nuke); 2D/3D Compositing (Nuke); Previsualisation; Physical and Practical SFX.

After 9 months of common tuition, students would then choose to specialise further in one of three areas:

Compositing or Colour or CG 3D
To cement students’ choice of specialisation and to prepare them for their second year of MA studies, students would undertake one further common module on ‘Transmedia Storytelling’ and then three units related to their specialisation:

Compositing
Year 1: Motion Capture/Adv. Maya + Nuke; Transmedia storytelling; Green Screen Module (with Prod. Design)
Year 2: Compositing + Prosthetics shoot/post; Compositing + MoCo Workshop/Models/Miniatures

Colour
Year 1: Colour Management on set and in post; Transmedia storytelling; Colour Grading
Year 2: Colour Grading Prosthetics project; Online Editing and deliverables

CG 3D
Year 1: Motion Capture/Adv. Maya + Nuke; Transmedia storytelling; Prosthetics and SFX Make-Up

As with all other MA specialisations at the NFTS the Digital FX students would complete a dissertation over the period of the course informing and reflecting on their practice, and work on the 2nd Year Graduate Film and TV Productions.

For the duration of the course, every Digital FX student has a dedicated computer workstation loaded with the latest 2D and 3D software applications including Maya, Nuke, PF Track, After Effects/Photoshop and many other specialist applications.

Working closely with Industry partners, students will also benefit from a wide range of workshops and masterclasses run by Industry professionals. Carefully selected practical work placements may also be available.
Unlike other schools, all production costs are met by the School. In addition you will be given a cash Production Budget. NFTS students are engaged in more productions as part of the curriculum than any of our competitors.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

The course covers such a diverse range of subjects that there is no typical candidate. Your background may be in the arts or other media or you may be a recent graduate or Industry professional looking to fast-track or switch your career.

Although not strictly necessary, you are likely to have some Industry experience or training in your chosen field and you must already understand the basic technical and operational use of computers.

An ideal candidate should have a mixture of creative and technical skills. Communication, people and management skills are also desirable.

Your application should be supported by a brief outline of your particular interests in the Compositing, Colour Grading or CG 3D fields including any relevant experience, either academic or practical.

You must indicate in your application which specialism you wish to study during the second year:

either Compositing or CG 3D or Colour.

Our definition of animation is broad, covering almost any treated or stop frame technique. Many students work in a combination of techniques. Students are encouraged to push the boundaries to find a new look, a fresh approach or a different angle within the narrative structure.

Learning to build and work with a team is central to the course. Collaborative workshops with other filmmaking disciplines help animation directors understand the roles of each crew member and the skills they bring to the filmmaking process.

Our aim is to educate and prepare our graduates to go out into the Industry with a wide range of practical skills, experience and industry contacts. To achieve this in two years we have a curriculum of workshops, masterclasses, set projects and an MA dissertation.

CURRICULUM

Students develop their animation and storytelling skills by exploring relationships between animation, narrative and film language. Through experimenting with different techniques they will broaden and enhance their personal style.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

We are looking for people with a desire to tell stories, a strong visual sense and an enthusiasm for film and television culture and history. Successful applicants may have a degree in a relevant subject, such as animation, graphics, illustration or fine arts, or may have taken intensive short animation courses or may have worked in the industry and now want to develop their own work.

- A DVD with a maximum total running time of 20 minutes. This should include more than just simple exercises.
Your submission must include an animated film created by you. It should also contain a narrative or a sequence of information (eg animatic). It may also include commissioned work.
Up to five minutes of other materials may be included at the end of the disc, provided the total running time of the DVD does not exceed 20 minutes.

The International Film Production MA is an exciting programme which allows you to develop your filmmaking skills to a professional level, by working closely with the Creative Media Skills training centre at Pinewood Studios; one of the UK’s most important production facilities. This course focuses on games and animation but is also suitable for students interested in related areas such as film, comics and illustration. You will undertake project based course work supported by dedicated staff with a wealth of practical experience of both the commercial and academic worlds.

Your teaching is supported by close links to industry. In previous years we have had a range of visiting lecturers – a senior concept artist from Double Negative, an art director from Ubisoft, the director of Atomhawk and representatives from Dreamworks and Microsoft. We have also had visits from a range of freelancers specialising in areas such as character design, storyboarding and matte painting. Industry experts are actively involved in setting you tasks and providing feedback.

What you study

The postgraduate course covers specialist areas – character design, environment design and storytelling. You also focus on core drawing skills including regular life drawing classes. The course concludes with a final project – we support you to create a brief that enables you to specialise in your chosen area of interest.
