This Engineering Doctorate is offered by the Advanced Manufacturing Industrial Doctorate Centre (AMIDC) (http://www.strath.ac.uk/afrc/amidc). The Centre, which focuses on developing new and enhanced manufacturing techniques within the forming sector is a joint collaboration between Strathclyde’s Advanced Forming Research Centre (AFRC) and the Department of Design, Manufacture and Engineering Management (DMEM). The AMIDC is the only established forging and forming research centre in the UK.

Students will undertake focused research to understand and develop solutions to the technical issues associated with manufacturing in an industrial context. The outputs from these projects will contribute valuable research to support the Manufacturing Industry, and working within sponsored companies will enable EngD candidates to help resolve issues and push the boundaries of current manufacturing techniques.

We are currently looking for outstanding graduates to join our September 2014 cohort who have achieved or are expected to achieve a first or second class Honours degree in Engineering, Science or Technology subject, or a Masters in Engineering.

The one year MPhil programmes in Criminology and Criminological Research regularly recruit around 40 students each year. The programmes have a high national and international standing, and the MPhil in Criminological Research is a recognised Doctoral Training Centre pathway towards a PhD and so candidates can apply to the Institute of Criminology for Economic and Social Research Council 1+3 funding.

The MPhil programmes consist of core modules and seminars on topics in key areas. The core modules are compulsory and familiarise students with current criminological thinking and research. The other seminars cover a range of topics which include criminal justice, comparative criminology, mental health and crime, a sociology of punishment, developmental criminology, a sociology of prison life, policing, social contexts of crime and crime prevention (please note that not all optional courses are run each year).

The basic aims of the MPhil programme are:

1. to offer an up-to-date and high-quality course, introducing students to some of the most important theory and research in criminology
2. to offer a sound foundation for more advanced work, such as that involved in research and teaching careers in criminology, and in particular for progression to the Institute’s PhD in Criminology
3. to provide those who wish to proceed to careers beyond academic or research contexts with a sound foundation of knowledge and methodological skills, which can be used effectively in relation to work in criminal justice agencies, the legal profession or other professional or voluntary organisations.

Learning Outcomes

Students should acquire:

- an understanding of core criminological and criminal justice theories; a critical awareness of current problems and debates within the field; originality in application of knowledge to current issues; and skills in critical evaluation of theoretical and empirical literature relevant to criminological and criminal justice research;

For progression from the MPhil to the PhD: the Institute strongly recommends that students who intend to register for the PhD apply for the MPhil in Criminological Research in the first instance. Progression to the PhD is dependent on a good performance on the MPhil programme.

The Institute of Criminology is pleased to be able to offer a number of Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) 1+3 or +3 studentships. Each of the studentships covers the cost of the University Composition Fee for four years, together with a maintenance stipend for each year. Starting in fall 2014, graduate students can enroll in the new Bioinformatics Specialization, as part of the Biochemistry & Molecular Biology Graduate Program. This unique program at the University of Calgary will provide students with advanced training in the development of computational approaches for understanding large-scale biomedical data.

Come study science in the Canadian Rocky Mountains! Research in our department is diverse, and at the forefront of many fields. Research interests span from biochemistry to molecular, cellular and developmental biology, genetics, immunology and bioinformatics, with applications to cancer and clinical research. Our departmental members are grouped into four "streams" with common research interests: Molecular and Developmental Genetics, Molecular Biology of Disease, Genomics Proteomics and Bioinformatics and Cell Signalling and Structure. Additionally our faculty are members of the Faculty of Medicine's research-based Institutes and Centres.

Our department offers outstanding graduate training leading to M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees and postdoctoral training. Effective April 1, 2014, guaranteed minimum stipends will be $23,000 for Ph.D. students and $21,000 for M.Sc. students. All students admitted into the BMB graduate program during the 2013-2014 year, and receiving the guaranteed minimum stipend, will receive a BMB Entrance Award. This award is valued at $5,000 for PhD students ($2,500 to be paid in their first year, and $2,500 to be paid in their second year), and $2,500 for MSc students. Entrance Awards will be reduced by any amount a stipend is over the program's minimum levels.

Those with outstanding achievement or potential will be eligible for additional support through scholarships and subsidies.

New students may spend their first six months in the program doing rotations in up to three different laboratories, although they may also apply to directly enter a research laboratory.

An MSc by research is taken in one year as a full-time student or in two years as a part-time student. The degree is awarded following the successful completion of a period of research, including the submission of a thesis and its subsequent examination, together with a seminar. The thesis is expected to display a particular knowledge of some part or aspect of the field of study, and to make a contribution to knowledge or understanding.

Course Structure

There are various milestones throughout the MSc year which will be assessed through formally required pieces of work. These include seminars, written work and oral deliverables.

Students should aim to submit a thesis at the end of the 12 months registration period. The final deadline for submission falls three months later. No oral examination is held, unless either supervisor or assessor requests one.

Part-time students can take an MSc by research over a two-year period, with the milestones distributed accordingly over this duration.

The EPSRC Intelligent Games and Games Intelligence (IGGI) Centre for Doctoral Training is a collaboration between the University of York, the University of Essex and Goldsmiths College, University of London. It will train the next generation of researchers, designers, developers and entrepreneurs in digital games.

The Centre is a unique opportunity for students to undertake PhD research in collaboration with our 60 industrial games partners and world-leading academics.

The doctoral programme combines practical skills training with advanced teaching in cutting-edge research topics and the chance to contribute original research to a growing academic area. Students also undertake two industrial placements during the programme, giving first hand industrial experience that will influence their research projects. This MRes is a 1-year full-time postgraduate course run by the Faculty of Medicine, Dept of Oncology at the Hammersmith Hospital Campus of Imperial College London.

This course is designed both for BSc graduates with a suitable first degree in subjects such as Life Sciences or Biomedical Sciences and clinicians specializing in cancer related fields including medical or clinical oncology wishing to undertake a research degree to further their career in academic medicine.

Course objectives:
1) To provide science or medical graduates with an excellent introduction to the cellular and molecular biological basis of cancer.
2) To enable students to experience some of the most technologically advanced and diverse approaches currently being applied in the broad field of cancer biology through two independent 19-week research projects within the Faculty of Medicine, Imperial College.

Structure of the MRes in Cancer Biology:
The course comprises an initial eight week taught component in which the cellular and molecular basis of cancer biology are covered plus an introduction to the clinical and pathological aspects of carcinogenesis. Career opportunities:
The course is primarily designed to prepare students for an academic or industrial research career, with those students successfully completing the course ideally placed to apply for fellowships and register for a Ph.D.

Applications are welcomed from candidates with a first degree in an appropriate medical or science subject. Candidates are normally expected to hold a good first degree (upper second class or better) from a UK university or an equivalent qualification if obtained outside the UK. In line with Imperial College policy, students for whom English is not their first language will be expected to pass the British council IELTS test at grade 6.0 or above, with a score of 5 or above I each component. An alternative is the TOEFL Internet Based Test (minimal score of 90 overall, with required scores of 20 in Speaking and 24 in Writing).

This is a creative departure from the traditional Ph.D. offered elsewhere in much of Europe and is designed to produce rigorously trained, widely-read and well-rounded political scientists, able to take their place in the forefront of the profession. The programme combines an intensive set of courses on the substance and methodology of research along with a traditional emphasis on conducting original research. Political Science has eight full time academic staff and currently has thirty research postgraduate students.

In the first year students follow a number of courses in the qualitative and quantitative aspects of research, a course in political behaviour and comparative politics, which reflects the expertise and interests of most members of the department, and develops a research proposal for the final thesis. In the first year of the Ph.D programme, students are required to perform well on their coursework and to defend their draft thesis proposal successfully. In the second year of the Ph.D. programme, there are further optional courses and students start work on their thesis.

Successful applicants have a good honors degree in political science or a related discipline. Political Science seeks to recruit a varied mix of students from different disciplinary, cultural and educational backgrounds. Multiple awards are available each year for competitive candidates which cover fees and provide a stipend to meet living costs. The MRes in Biomedical Research: Bacterial Pathogenesis and Infection is a 12 month postgraduate course providing exemplary academic and research training. The Bacterial Pathogenesis and Infection stream is a specialised stream on a larger course (the MRes in Biomedical Research). This programme will provide research training in fundamental aspects of bacterial pathogenesis, host immunity and antibiotic resistance, with particular attention to the scientific, technical and professional acumen required to establish research independence. The emphasis will be on molecular approaches to understanding bacterial infection biology, as a function of bacterial pathogenic strategy and physiology, as well as resistance to host defences and antibiotic therapy, and is comprised of two 20-week research projects embedded within research-intensive groups and a series of lectures, seminars, tutorials and technical workshops.

Based in the MRC Centre for Molecular Bacteriology and Infection, the course provides an opportunity to learn directly from internationally-respected scientists through sustained interaction for the duration of the course. This programme will deliver training in: Molecular microbiology, including integration of molecular and cellular information to understand the genetic basis of virulence; modelling host and microbial aspects of infection to help characterise the host-pathogen interaction and immunity; functionality and physiological relevance of microbial virulence factors; mechanisms of antibiotic resistance and persistence; derivation of mechanistic approaches to problem-solving in molecular and cellular biomedical science.

Course Objectives
The emphasis is on molecular approaches to understanding infection as a function of bacterial pathogenic strategy and physiology. This research-oriented approach to training in biomedical science will comprise both theoretical and practical elements. The course will expose students to the latest developments in the field through two mini-research projects and a series of technical workshops. Students will gain experience in applying technologically advanced approaches to biomedical research questions.

Specifically the course will deliver research training in:

• Molecular bacteriology, integrating molecular and cellular information to understand the genetic basis of microbial virulence.
• Modelling host and microbial aspects of infection to help characterise the host-pathogen interaction and immunity.
• By experimentation, understanding the biochemical functions and physiological relevance of microbial virulence factors and antibiotic resistance.
• Derivation of mechanistic approaches to problem-solving in molecular and cellular biomedical science.

Individuals who successfully complete the course will have developed the ability to:

• Demonstrate practical dexterity in the commonly employed and more advanced practical techniques of molecular and cellular microbiology

The Centre offers a challenging 4-year International Engineering Doctorate (EngD Int) programme in Sustainable Materials and Manufacturing with research projects that address industry-driven challenges. For example: establishing natural or recovered materials as feed-stocks, reducing process inputs and outputs without compromising performance or economic viability, extracting high value materials from waste streams, and ultimately establishing economic and environmental sustainability

The EngD International programme combines both academic and industrial expertise; offering industry relevant research projects supported by partner companies, taught modules resulting in an embedded MSc in Sustainable Materials and Manufacturing, and an international placement with our academic and industrial partners overseas.

Doctoral students will be based at either Warwick, Cranfield, or Exeter (depending on the research project they undertake), where they will be part of a leading research group and will be supervised by an academic in that institution and a mentor in their sponsor company. Structure

This course is presented as a one-year, full-time Master's level programme.

The programme takes place over two stages: In Part 1, you follow taught modules to the value of 120 credits, whilst Part 2 consists of a Dissertation or research project based module worth 60 credits.

Teaching

A wide range of teaching styles will be used to deliver the diverse material forming the curriculum of the programme, and you will be required to attend lectures and participate in examples classes.

A 10-credit module represents approximately 100 hours of study in total, which includes 24–36 hours of contact time with teaching staff. The remaining hours are intended to be for private study, coursework, revision and assessment.

At the dissertation stage, you will be allocated a supervisor in the relevant field of research whom you should expect to meet with regularly. Dissertation topics are presented via the Alacrity Foundation.

Learning Central, the Cardiff University virtual learning environment (VLE), will be used extensively to communicate, support lectures and provide general programme materials such as reading lists and module descriptions. It may also be used to provide self-testing assessment and give feedback.

Assessment

Achievement of learning outcomes in the majority of modules is assessed by a combination of coursework assignments, plus University examinations set in January and May. Examinations count for 60%–70% of assessment in Stage 1 of the programme, depending on the options chosen, the remainder being largely project work and pieces of coursework.

Award of an MSc requires successful completion of Stage 2, the Dissertation, with a mark of 50% or higher.

Career prospects

Career prospects are generally excellent with graduating students following paths either into research, business or related industry. After graduating, a number of students start their own businesses.

In terms of research, Cardiff University has many electrical, electronic and microwave related research areas that require PhD students if you wish to undertake further postgraduate study.

Placements

Applicants to the MSc programme will have the opportunity to make an additional application to the Alacrity Foundation. If successful, the five-month industrial project will be based within the Foundation in Newport and attract a tax-free stipend of £13,800 from month nine of their MSc programme.

Participants will then be required to commit to the Alacrity programme for an additional fifteen months.

Stream overview

This course is a stream within the broader MRes in Biomedical Research.

The Data Science stream provides an interdisciplinary training in analysis of ‘big data’ from modern high throughput biomolecular studies. This is achieved through a core training in multivariate statistics, chemometrics and machine learning methods, along with research experience in the development and application of these methods to real world biomedical studies. There is an emphasis on handling large-scale data from molecular phenotyping techniques such as metabolic profiling and related genomics approaches. Like the other MRes streams, this course exposes students to the latest developments in the field through two mini-research projects of 20 weeks each, supplemented by lectures, workshops and journal clubs. The stream is based in the Division of Computational and Systems Medicine and benefits from close links with large facilities such as the MRC-NIHR National Phenome Centre, the MRC Clinical Phenotyping Centre and the Centre for Systems Oncology. The Data Science stream is developed in collaboration with Imperial’s Data Science Institute.

Who is this course for?

Students with a degree in physical sciences, engineering, mathematics computer science (or related area) who wish to apply their numeric skills to solve biomedical problems with big data.

Stream Objectives

Students will gain experience in analysing and modelling big data from technologically advanced techniques applied to biomedical questions. Individuals who successfully complete the course will have developed the ability to:

• Perform novel computational informatics research and exercise critical scientific thought in the interpretation of results.

• Implement and apply sophisticated statistical and machine learning techniques in the interrogation of large and complex

biomedical data sets.

• Understand the cutting edge technologies used to conduct molecular phenotyping studies on a large scale.

• Interpret and present complex scientific data from multiple sources.

• Mine the scientific literature for relevant information and develop research plans.

• Write a grant application, through the taught grant-writing exercise common to all MRes streams.

• Write and defend research reports through writing, poster presentations and seminars.

• Exercise a range of transferable skills by taking short courses taught through the Graduate School and the core programme of the

MRes Biomedical Research degree.

A wide range of research projects is made available to students twice a year. The projects available to each student are determined by their stream.
