Applications are invited for a fully-funded part-time two-year MRes studentship at St Mary’s University, Twickenham, London, to begin on 30th August 2017 [completed proposal due 31st July 2017]. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Senior Lecturers to complete a MRes in the area of expert performance in dance, whilst also providing strength and conditioning (S&C) coaching support to the students of The Royal Ballet School, Covent Garden. Subject to ratification of contract.

A topic to investigate will be agreed through collaboration between the student, supervisor and Royal Ballet School Healthcare Manager. The studentship will provide part-time MRes student fees of £5,500 and a bursary of £11,000 p.a. Please note that the initial stipend payment will be paid upon successful registration in August 2017.

The successful applicant will split their time between the Royal Ballet School in central London and St Mary’s University in Twickenham. As a member of the S&C team working with the international students of The Royal Ballet School you will contribute towards the planning, delivery and evaluation of a programme of world-class S&C support. We are looking for a coach with experience of supporting young athletes in a high-performance setting and who understands how academic research can be used to inform training decisions in an S&C context.

Data collection will be alongside delivery of Strength and Conditioning (S&C) services to The Royal Ballet School’s students. Delivery will be a minimum of 18 hours per week, for 47 weeks per year.

Applicants should possess:
- an undergraduate degree (minimum upper second class) in sport science (or a similar subject)
- Scored a minimum of an upper second class in an undergraduate degree research project
- Hold professional accreditation with the UKSCA (inc. first aid qualified) or have the ability to achieve within 6 months
- Have at least 3 years S&C coaching experience
- Excellent teamwork and communication skills
- Knowledge of research methods and designing projects with a high-level of scientific rigor

This Engineering Doctorate is offered by the Advanced Manufacturing Industrial Doctorate Centre (AMIDC) (http://www.strath.ac.uk/afrc/amidc). The Centre, which focuses on developing new and enhanced manufacturing techniques within the forming sector is a joint collaboration between Strathclyde’s Advanced Forming Research Centre (AFRC) and the Department of Design, Manufacture and Engineering Management (DMEM). The AMIDC is the only established forging and forming research centre in the UK.

Students will undertake focused research to understand and develop solutions to the technical issues associated with manufacturing in an industrial context. The outputs from these projects will contribute valuable research to support the Manufacturing Industry, and working within sponsored companies will enable EngD candidates to help resolve issues and push the boundaries of current manufacturing techniques.

We are currently looking for outstanding graduates to join our September 2014 cohort who have achieved or are expected to achieve a first or second class Honours degree in Engineering, Science or Technology subject, or a Masters in Engineering.

Description:

An exciting Industrial Masters by Research opportunity has arisen out of the ongoing relationship between the University of Salford and Dyer Environmental Controls Ltd.

Highlighted by the recent flooding issues in the UK, Dyer Environmental Controls Ltd believes that there is a need for improved weather detection and is looking to design a low-cost , wireless weather sensor and transmitter to enable early warning sensing and quantitative data for analysis. Dyer believes this data can be used for many applications e.g. flood warning/defenses; agricultural irrigation control; building automation; and the data collection for future modelling.

The aim of this Industrial Masters project is to produce a trialed and tested working prototype unit which Dyer Environmental can then look to submit for commercial development.

The collaboration

The School of Built Environment at the University of Salford has a strong track record of working with industry. The placement will be with the Applied Buildings and Energy Research Group, which is home to the Salford Energy House. Over the last 5 years we have developed detailed knowledge of sensors to understand both internal and external environments that are used in both laboratory and field environments.

Dyer Environmental Controls Ltd has worked closely with the University of Salford for the past 8 years, completing a 2.5 year KTP project and also sponsoring a PhD student. Dyer has also worked on various projects with the University of Salford’s Energy House. Now celebrating its 25th year, Dyer has worked within the ventilation and building automation sectors and is constantly striving for innovation. Dyer’s success is through customer relationships and flexibility – providing the most efficient and most effective solution for their customer’s needs. The KTP project succeeded in bringing a new product to market and is now sold globally.

Candidates:

The preferred candidates must have a good understanding of:
• A suitable undergraduate level award in electronics/electronics engineering
• The design/implementation and construction of analogue and digital electronic circuits.
• A good working knowledge of C & C++ for embedded microcontrollers, wireless/ mobile communications and PCB layout and design.
• Should have a working knowledge of meteorological or environmental sensors

Candidates are asked to provide a personal statement describing their background, skills, academic interests and their motivation for doing a Masters in no more than 2 sides of A4. This should include evidence of being able to work independently to a high standard, collaborate with others, and excellent writing skills.

The one year MPhil programmes in Criminology and Criminological Research regularly recruit around 40 students each year. The programmes have a high national and international standing, and the MPhil in Criminological Research is a recognised Doctoral Training Centre pathway towards a PhD and so candidates can apply to the Institute of Criminology for Economic and Social Research Council 1+3 funding.

The MPhil programmes consist of core modules and seminars on topics in key areas. The core modules are compulsory and familiarise students with current criminological thinking and research. The other seminars cover a range of topics which include criminal justice, comparative criminology, mental health and crime, a sociology of punishment, developmental criminology, a sociology of prison life, policing, social contexts of crime and crime prevention (please note that not all optional courses are run each year).

The basic aims of the MPhil programme are:

1. to offer an up-to-date and high-quality course, introducing students to some of the most important theory and research in criminology
2. to offer a sound foundation for more advanced work, such as that involved in research and teaching careers in criminology, and in particular for progression to the Institute’s PhD in Criminology
3. to provide those who wish to proceed to careers beyond academic or research contexts with a sound foundation of knowledge and methodological skills, which can be used effectively in relation to work in criminal justice agencies, the legal profession or other professional or voluntary organisations.

Learning Outcomes

Students should acquire:

- an understanding of core criminological and criminal justice theories; a critical awareness of current problems and debates within the field; originality in application of knowledge to current issues; and skills in critical evaluation of theoretical and empirical literature relevant to criminological and criminal justice research;

For progression from the MPhil to the PhD: the Institute strongly recommends that students who intend to register for the PhD apply for the MPhil in Criminological Research in the first instance. Progression to the PhD is dependent on a good performance on the MPhil programme.

Continuation to the PhD programme will involve a separate application process, undertaken during the MPhil year. The Institute of Criminology is pleased to be able to offer a number of Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) 1+3 or +3 studentships. Each of the studentships covers the cost of the University Composition Fee for four years, together with a maintenance stipend for each year. Come study science in the Canadian Rocky Mountains! Research in our department is diverse, and at the forefront of many fields. Research interests span from biochemistry to molecular, cellular and developmental biology, genetics, immunology and bioinformatics, with applications to cancer and clinical research. Our departmental members are grouped into four "streams" with common research interests: Molecular and Developmental Genetics, Molecular Biology of Disease, Genomics Proteomics and Bioinformatics and Cell Signalling and Structure. Additionally our faculty are members of the Faculty of Medicine's research-based Institutes and Centres.

Our department offers outstanding graduate training leading to M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees and postdoctoral training. Effective April 1, 2014, guaranteed minimum stipends will be $23,000 for Ph.D. students and $21,000 for M.Sc. students. All students admitted into the BMB graduate program during the 2013-2014 year, and receiving the guaranteed minimum stipend, will receive a BMB Entrance Award. This award is valued at $5,000 for PhD students ($2,500 to be paid in their first year, and $2,500 to be paid in their second year), and $2,500 for MSc students. Entrance Awards will be reduced by any amount a stipend is over the program's minimum levels.

Those with outstanding achievement or potential will be eligible for additional support through scholarships and subsidies.

New students may spend their first six months in the program doing rotations in up to three different laboratories, although they may also apply to directly enter a research laboratory.

Systematic Evolution of Ligands by Exponential Enrichment (SELEX) enables the enrichment of oligonucleotide aptamers from highly diverse libraries of unique sequences. Nucleic acid aptamers are short, single-stranded oligonucleotides that form three-dimensional structures capable of high affinity binding to specific targets. High-affinity aptamers have been identified against a broad range of proteins, carbohydrates and small molecules. NGS technology and sophisticated bioinformatics analyses are applied to SELEX campaigns with the aim of early identification of aptamer families. The project will focus on the identification of novel aptamers to microbial targets. Bioinformatic analyses will be applied to understand and direct the outputs from SELEX screening campaigns.
Centauri Therapeutics is a UK-based biotechnology company focused on the discovery and development of novel molecules targeting life threatening diseases. We are interested in the application of SELEX technology to the identification of therapeutic aptamers. The flexibility of this two-year program gives you the freedom to take an interdisciplinary approach to intriguing questions, in a department that’s small enough to allow close interaction with faculty and fellow students, yet large enough to encompass a wide range of research interests.

Pursue your interests

This program allows graduate students to build on their academic backgrounds and interests through sustained study in a particular area. Our diverse faculty teaches a broad range of topics, and the program allows students to take courses in other departments, broadening their educational opportunities.

Format and assessment

Students may select of one two options: Plan I (consisting of 24 semester hours and a thesis) or Plan II (consisting of 30 semester hours).

All students take four required courses: American Experience I and II and American Studies Colloquium I and II. Students generally take these courses in their first year of the program. The American Experience courses survey American cultural history and introduce students to some of the prevalent texts, scholars, and ideas in the field of American Studies. The American Studies Colloquium, a sustained study that takes place over the course of two semesters, gives students the opportunity to develop a publishable paper on a topic of their choosing. In the course of this project, students do independent research, undergo peer review, and revise various drafts to produce a polished final paper.

In addition to the required courses, students can select from a range of elective courses. Student need at least six hours in seminar-style courses. Although the American Studies Department offers an array of courses each semester, students may choose to take up to nine hours outside of the department.

At the end of the program, students take comprehensive exams, which test their knowledge of the material that they encountered in their particular program of study. Many students find that comprehensive exams provide an exceptional way to review the things that they have learned in the program, and these exams also provide students who want to pursue a PhD with valuable experience doing this kind of exercise.

One of the unique aspects of the program is the opportunity to design and teach a course in your second year — to develop course ideas, design the syllabus, assign readings, and actually teach a subject you’re passionate about. In recent years students have taught courses on Woodstock, Walt Disney, Ronald Reagan, and modern gay America.

The moderate size of our department creates an environment in which faculty are open and accessible, able to build close relationships with their students. And because our program offers only a master’s degree, here you won’t have to compete with doctoral students for faculty members’ time and attention.

Our guiding principle is to ensure that each student receives the best possible education, providing a coherent course but with the flexibility to cater for individual needs.

All students in the year group attend the Theories and Methodologies in Japanese Studies Seminar, at which they meet regularly and are introduced to various disciplinary approaches in Japanese Studies. In addition they are guided through the various steps of academic research, writing, presentation and career development. They are free to choose two courses from a variety of options so that each student receives a tailor-made education. At the end of the MPhil programme, students will be expected to have:

- acquired the ability to read, interpret and translate primary sources in Modern and/or Classical Japanese;
- acquired a good knowledge of the general scholarship on Modern and/or Classical Japanese culture(s);
- acquired an in-depth knowledge of the secondary literature relevant to the subject of their dissertation;
- developed the ability to formulate original research questions and produce a well-constructed, argument to answer them, in the form of an independent piece of research based on the use of primary and secondary sources;
- acquired the skills to use library and internet resources independently.

Format

1: Dissertation (50 % of the grade)

In their dissertation, students will be required to demonstrate research competence using Japanese-language sources, and to conduct research that addresses contemporary and/or historical issues of relevance to Japan. Prospective students are asked to contact potential supervisors before applying to Cambridge to ensure that an appropriate supervisor is available.

2: Three papers (50% of the grade)

Each of the three papers (a paper is an exam for which teaching is provided) is assessed either by a research essay of maximum 5,000 words or an alternative exercise agreed by the Degree Committee and counts for one sixth of the total grade (i.e. 16.67 percent). Please note that papers are usually only offered if there are at least two takers.

2.1: MPhil in Japanese Studies - Theories and Methodologies in Japanese Studies

The theory and methodology seminar meets throughout the first two terms, connecting Japanese Studies to various disciplinary approaches and theories. Students will also receive training on sources and resources, library searches, academic writing, analysis and presentation skills, writing a research proposal or grant application, career planning etc., and will have opportunities to engage in peer review as they present their dissertation proposals.

Assessment

- For the MPhil in Asian and Middle Eastern Studies (Japanese Studies), students will submit a thesis of not more than 15,000 words, including footnotes and appendices but excluding bibliography on a subject approved by the Degree Committee. All MPhil dissertations must include a brief Abstract at the start of the dissertation of no more than 400 words.

- For the MPhil in Asian and Middle Eastern Studies (Japanese Studies), students submit essays as part of their degree:

Most papers are assessed by essay, as described in Form and Conduct. Essays are not more than 5,000 words, including footnotes, but excluding bibliography. Candidates may apply to the Degree Committee for approval of an equivalent Alternative Exercise.

Continuing

Those who would like to apply for the PhD after the MPhil will be expected to have scored at least 67% or above (or the equivalent from an overseas University) in their Master's degree which should be related to the PhD programme they wish to pursue. All applicants should submit with their GRADSAF (graduate application) a workable and interesting research proposal and demonstrate that they have the required academic knowledge and skills to carry out their project.

Admission is at the discretion of the Degree Committee, which judges each graduate applicant on his or her own merits and in accordance with its own set rules and regulations.

Format

We offer a variety of theoretical and skills based training to support our wide range of topics and streams of research. A personalised training programme will be agreed for each incoming student in the first few weeks of the degree period. This will cover an agreed timetable of attendance at the various seminars, the research project planned, amd the formal review points throughout the degree.

The MPhil at the CBU is achieved by supervised research and is under the jurisdiction of the Degree Committee for the Faculty of Biology. The provision of supervision and teaching is overseen by the Graduate School of Life Sciences. Within the CBU, the internal Graduate Committee is responsible for all aspects of the running of the degrees. A suitable project falling within the interests of the supervisor, and sustainable within the limits imposed by the facilities available at the CBU, is agreed by both student and supervisor, and endorsed by the Graduate Committee. Each graduate student has a primary Supervisor, who will supervise the main body of their research, and an Advisor who acts as a supplementary source of advice and support. We also have two pastoral tutors who offer personal support and counselling throughout a student’s time at the Unit.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the programme, students will have:

• a comprehensive understanding of techniques, and a thorough knowledge of the literature, applicable to their own research;

• demonstrated originality in the application of knowledge, together with a practical

understanding of how research and enquiry are used to create and interpret knowledge in their field;

• shown abilities in the critical evaluation of current research and research techniques and methodologies;

• demonstrated some self-direction and originality in tackling and solving problems, and acted autonomously in the planning and implementation of research.

There is no automatic progression from a CBU MPhil degree to a CBU PhD. MPhil students will need to apply to be considered for a PhD place alongside all other candidates.

For eligible applicants, several MRC funded studentships are available (see MRC eligibility details), which pay the University Composition Fee, and a small but liveable stipend (currently £13,726 p.a.), however it should be noted that this money has never been allocated to an MPhil student as we always have excellent eligible PhD students whose funding takes priority.
