Applications are invited for a fully-funded part-time two-year MRes studentship at St Mary’s University, Twickenham, London, to begin on 30th August 2017 [completed proposal due 31st July 2017]. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Senior Lecturers to complete a MRes in the area of expert performance in dance, whilst also providing strength and conditioning (S&C) coaching support to the students of The Royal Ballet School, Covent Garden. Subject to ratification of contract.

A topic to investigate will be agreed through collaboration between the student, supervisor and Royal Ballet School Healthcare Manager. The studentship will provide part-time MRes student fees of £5,500 and a bursary of £11,000 p.a. Please note that the initial stipend payment will be paid upon successful registration in August 2017.

The successful applicant will split their time between the Royal Ballet School in central London and St Mary’s University in Twickenham. As a member of the S&C team working with the international students of The Royal Ballet School you will contribute towards the planning, delivery and evaluation of a programme of world-class S&C support. We are looking for a coach with experience of supporting young athletes in a high-performance setting and who understands how academic research can be used to inform training decisions in an S&C context.

Data collection will be alongside delivery of Strength and Conditioning (S&C) services to The Royal Ballet School’s students. Delivery will be a minimum of 18 hours per week, for 47 weeks per year.

Applicants should possess:
- an undergraduate degree (minimum upper second class) in sport science (or a similar subject)
- Scored a minimum of an upper second class in an undergraduate degree research project
- Hold professional accreditation with the UKSCA (inc. first aid qualified) or have the ability to achieve within 6 months
- Have at least 3 years S&C coaching experience
- Excellent teamwork and communication skills
- Knowledge of research methods and designing projects with a high-level of scientific rigor

The Centre, which focuses on developing new and enhanced manufacturing techniques within the forming sector is a joint collaboration between Strathclyde’s Advanced Forming Research Centre (AFRC) and the Department of Design, Manufacture and Engineering Management (DMEM). Students will undertake focused research to understand and develop solutions to the technical issues associated with manufacturing in an industrial context. The outputs from these projects will contribute valuable research to support the Manufacturing Industry, and working within sponsored companies will enable EngD candidates to help resolve issues and push the boundaries of current manufacturing techniques.

Industrial Doctoral Centre for Offshore Renewable Energy is a partnership of the Universities of Edinburgh, Strathclyde and Exeter, the Scottish Association for Marine Science and HR-Wallingford. The Centre is funded by the Energy Technologies Institute and the RCUK Energy programme.

IDCORE offers a four year EngD (Engineering Doctorate) programme. EngD students are known as Research Engineers. They follow a programme based on three elements: postgraduate-level training, transferable skills and engineering leadership, and research. As a Research Engineer you will spend your first nine months of the four-year degree attending an intensive programme of 12 taught courses delivered by internationally renowned academic staff from the Universities of Edinburgh, Strathclyde and Exeter in Edinburgh. These first two terms provide you with skills needed to survive in industry and to get started on your research activities. You will be taught by staff from across the consortium and experts from industry. Practical courses will teach you important laboratory and fieldwork skills; while a group design project will help you to develop team working skills and use knowledge gained during the taught programme.

The one year MPhil programmes in Criminology and Criminological Research regularly recruit around 40 students each year. The programmes have a high national and international standing, and the MPhil in Criminological Research is a recognised Doctoral Training Centre pathway towards a PhD and so candidates can apply to the Institute of Criminology for Economic and Social Research Council 1+3 funding.

The MPhil programmes consist of core modules and seminars on topics in key areas. The core modules are compulsory and familiarise students with current criminological thinking and research. The other seminars cover a range of topics which include criminal justice, comparative criminology, mental health and crime, a sociology of punishment, developmental criminology, a sociology of prison life, policing, social contexts of crime and crime prevention (please note that not all optional courses are run each year).

The basic aims of the MPhil programme are:

Description:

An exciting Industrial Masters by Research opportunity has arisen out of the ongoing relationship between the University of Salford and Dyer Environmental Controls Ltd.

Highlighted by the recent flooding issues in the UK, Dyer Environmental Controls Ltd believes that there is a need for improved weather detection and is looking to design a low-cost , wireless weather sensor and transmitter to enable early warning sensing and quantitative data for analysis. Dyer believes this data can be used for many applications e.g. flood warning/defenses; agricultural irrigation control; building automation; and the data collection for future modelling.

The aim of this Industrial Masters project is to produce a trialed and tested working prototype unit which Dyer Environmental can then look to submit for commercial development.

The collaboration

The School of Built Environment at the University of Salford has a strong track record of working with industry. The placement will be with the Applied Buildings and Energy Research Group, which is home to the Salford Energy House. This unique program at the University of Calgary will provide students with advanced training in the development of computational approaches for understanding large-scale biomedical data.

Come study science in the Canadian Rocky Mountains! Research in our department is diverse, and at the forefront of many fields. Course Structure

There are various milestones throughout the MSc year which will be assessed through formally required pieces of work. These include seminars, written work and oral deliverables.

Students should aim to submit a thesis at the end of the 12 months registration period. The final deadline for submission falls three months later. No oral examination is held, unless either supervisor or assessor requests one.

Part-time students can take an MSc by research over a two-year period, with the milestones distributed accordingly over this duration.

Structure of the MRes in Cancer Biology:

Within this period will also be a series of workshops covering key transferable skills such as statistics, bioinformatics and grant writing. This is followed by two separate 19-week research placements in the Faculty of Medicine, Imperial College London.


Career opportunities:
The course is primarily designed to prepare students for an academic or industrial research career, with those students successfully completing the course ideally placed to apply for fellowships and register for a Ph.D.

Entrance requirements:
Applications are welcomed from candidates with a first degree in an appropriate medical or science subject. Candidates are normally expected to hold a good first degree (upper second class or better) from a UK university or an equivalent qualification if obtained outside the UK. VIBOT is a two-year International Masters of Excellence in Vision and Robotics sponsored by the European Union under the Erasmus Mundus framework. Built as collaboration between three leading universities in Europe (Heriot-Watt University in Scotland, the Universitat de Girona in Spain and the Université de Bourgogne in France), it is a truly international degree where students not only learn cutting edge science and engineering but are also exposed to different cultures. Over 50 countries have been represented on the Vibot programs since its inception in 2006.

This is a highly competitive programme aiming at attracting the best European and Overseas students to study robotics and computer vision. A number of very attractive grants (up to €42000) covering the University fees and a stipend for living and travel expenses are offered to the best students in the limit of the available grants (typically 16/year). On average, one in ten student applying is selected for a grant.

In recent years, the amount of digital image information to be stored, processed and distributed has grown dramatically. The generalisation of the use of digital images, in video surveillance, biomedical and e-health systems, and remote sensing, creates new, pressing challenges, and automated management tools are key to enable the organisation, mining and processing of these important knowledge resources. The key subject areas taught are computer vision, pattern recognition and robotics. Research in these areas is very dynamic and relevant to a wide range of sectors, such as the autonomotive industry, autonomous systems, medical imaging and e-health. The course is over two years, students spend the first semester in France, the second in Spain and the third in Scotland. The fourth semester is reserved for Masters thesis.

Career Prospects:
All of our graduates find work in industry or research very quickly and are sought after by research laboratories and leading blue chip companies alike. More and more of our graduates choose an industrial career.

Started in 2006, the VIBOT program has become the leading computer vision and robotics program in Europe. A majority of the VIBOT students have graduated with distinction and around 50% of them continue on to PhD studies.

Links with industry:
Strong links with industry have been established and companies now routinely welcome our students for their final year project. Recently, a 2007-2009 VIBOT student won the BAe Systems Chairman Bronze award for his contribution to autonomous navigation of terrestrial robots, demonstrating that our student are well prepared not only for high academic achievement but also for industry.

The MRes (Master of Research) in Molecular Biophysics at King's College London offers an integrated training programme ideally suited to learn biophysical techniques crucially important to meet this challenge. We deliver an excellent foundation for students wishing to pursue careers in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry, medical research, scientific administration within research councils or scientific publishing.

- Course purpose -

Our programme is designed for outstanding graduates in the life and physical sciences (Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Physics) who want to apply their knowledge to biological problems at the research level.

- Course format and assessment -

Taught modules cover biophysics and molecular biology techniques with elements of bioinformatics. We offer a wide selection of research projects to prepare students for a PhD degree. Students have also the exciting option of carrying out their research project at the National University of Singapore (NUS), with which we have partnered to move forward outstanding science.
MRC Advanced Course Master's studentships are available providing tuition fees and a stipend. All UK and specific EU applicants who meet the MRC’s eligibility requirement for these studentships will automatically be considered for these awards. For EU students, the programme carries 90 ECTS credits.

The MRes in Biomedical Research: Bacterial Pathogenesis and Infection is a 12 month postgraduate course providing exemplary academic and research training. The Bacterial Pathogenesis and Infection stream is a specialised stream on a larger course (the MRes in Biomedical Research). This programme will provide research training in fundamental aspects of bacterial pathogenesis, host immunity and antibiotic resistance, with particular attention to the scientific, technical and professional acumen required to establish research independence. The emphasis will be on molecular approaches to understanding bacterial infection biology, as a function of bacterial pathogenic strategy and physiology, as well as resistance to host defences and antibiotic therapy, and is comprised of two 20-week research projects embedded within research-intensive groups and a series of lectures, seminars, tutorials and technical workshops.

Based in the MRC Centre for Molecular Bacteriology and Infection, the course provides an opportunity to learn directly from internationally-respected scientists through sustained interaction for the duration of the course. This programme will deliver training in: Molecular microbiology, including integration of molecular and cellular information to understand the genetic basis of virulence; modelling host and microbial aspects of infection to help characterise the host-pathogen interaction and immunity; functionality and physiological relevance of microbial virulence factors; mechanisms of antibiotic resistance and persistence; derivation of mechanistic approaches to problem-solving in molecular and cellular biomedical science.
