Course Overview

The MSc in Economic and Financial Analysis aims to provide industry ready graduates equipped with the skills needed for success in a variety of banking, finance, analysis, local government, regional development and a wide array of further exciting careers.

You will be taught critical knowledge for economic and financial analyst positions plus have extended opportunities to develop highly valued skills using standard industry software (Bloomberg and Stata) in your analysis of real data to answer your own Economic or Finance research questions. All this will be done in a challenging and thought provoking manner, which questions the traditional assumptions underlying many mainstream models of societies and economies to arrive at more useful perspectives.

You will study Behavioural Finance, a cutting-edge subject that is still not common on Master’s programmes and which is becoming a critical skill for market analysis and to ensure you meet regulators’ expectations. You will additionally explore banking systems and financial instruments (swaps, obligations, securities and so forth) in terms of pricing, strategies and economic contexts. Systems and instruments are explored for fundamental systemic and regulatory weaknesses. Following this course you would have the ability to assess a new financial product or innovation in terms of not only its likely success or failure, but its overall effects on the financial system.

Behavioural Economics and Financial Decision Making

Behavioural Economics and Financial Decision Making is a cutting edge subject that is still rare on many UK business school Master’s programmes and which is becoming the key skill in regulatory positions.

Global Economic Analysis

There are two strands to this unit. You will examine key economic concepts and applied developments in areas such as employment, innovation, rationality, growth and the limits of markets. You will also learn key statistical techniques and how to implement them using the sophisticated STATA statistics programme. Mastery of this programme should significantly improve employment prospects given that same programme is used by analysis in Governments, financial and consultancy companies. The skills learnt will also be invaluable in supporting your research for your dissertation.

Financial Economics and The Banking Crisis

This is a contemporary unit that will give you a complete understanding of the causes, effects, legacy and possible solutions to the 2007-09 global financial crisis. Specifically we will explain the macroeconomic consequences of the crisis but unlike most postgraduate units we will link this to the features of the derivatives that made much of this financial crisis possible. In so doing we will review complex derivatives, their structure, risks and how they are both valued and priced.

Investigating Business Practice

This unit requires students to apply the skills and knowledge developed for an external client. The brief is to identify and draw from best practice as described in policy and academic literature and then provide detailed, well designed proposals on how to improve upon the organisation's issue.

Research Methods

The overall aim of the Research Methods unit is to introduce you to methodologies and philosophical approaches to help develop your critical and reflective skills when researching (unfamiliar) topics in your future career. Firstly the unit should help you appreciate the key debates in the philosophy and epistemology of science. Secondly, you will be introduced to the use and presentation of qualitative and quantitative data and finally be able to justify the relationship between your philosophical approach and choices of qualitative and quantitative methods.

Dissertation

Through the content and activities of the preceding units you should be well prepared for your Dissertation. This will normally take the form of an empirical piece of research conducted with academic guidance and supervision. The internationally recognised research expertise of the economics and finance department aids the student enormously in successful completion of a high standard research project. Many students directly tailor their dissertation into an area of desired employment allowing them to build a highly specialised knowledge base in a specific area or even on a specific firm or organisation.

The number of units you study will depend on if you choose the PgCert (60 credits), PgDip (120 credits) or MSc (120 credits of units + 60 credit dissertation).

Assessment

Many of the assignments for this course can be tailored to your chosen career path. You will be assessed through research orientated coursework rather than the traditional mix of exams and coursework which do not allow you to focus on your interests. Research and academic skills will be at the heart of the teaching to support the successful completion of your taught units and dissertation/research project.

It aims to provide a broad training in the theories and methods of demography and population sciences and their application to health, social welfare and economic development.

Overview

The course is designed for those interested in acquiring technical expertise in demography and understanding the interlinkages between population studies and health, including fertility, sexual behaviour, ageing, health inequalities and life expectancy.

Graduates from the course would be equipped to pursue careers in public health, academic research of a very wide nature, NGOs, reproductive health programmes, health services, government statistical offices, as well as policy and planning organisations.

It provides training in the theory and practice of statistics with special reference to clinical trials, epidemiology and clinical or laboratory research.

The PSI Andrew Hewett Prize is founded in memory of Andrew Hewett, an alumnus of the School and awarded by the PSI (Statisticians in the Pharmaceutical Industry) to the best student on the course.

For the MSc Medical Statistics it is preferred that students should normally have obtained a mathematically-based first degree which includes some statistics. Graduates from other fields who have quantitative skills and some familiarity with statistical ideas may also apply.

These courses provide a broad understanding of infectious diseases through the core modules in public health, biostatistics and epidemiology, and the biology and control of infectious diseases which are taken by all students, together with the subsequent opportunities for specialised study in areas of the student’s own choice. Most of the students are in-service health professionals working for example as doctors or laboratory staff, who take the courses in order to acquire new knowledge in infectious diseases, or to update their current expertise.

The Infectious Diseases courses draw upon the School’s long tradition in the study of clinical and epidemiological aspects of infectious and tropical diseases. Providing a broad understanding of infectious diseases, together with developing strategies for their control and treatment, the courses will be of particular relevance to in-service health professionals, such as doctors or laboratory staff who either wish to acquire new knowledge in infectious diseases or update their current expertise.

These courses are aimed both at recent graduates who wish to pursue an advanced degree, and at people who took their first training some time ago and wish to update their knowledge in this rapidly evolving field or who wish to change career direction.

- EPM101 taster session This 10-minute taster session is taken from EPM101 Fundamentals of Epidemiology, the first core module of this Distance Learning Epidemiology course. It will introduce you to some epidemiological ideas and invite you to answer some of the questions that faced John Snow when he investigated the 1848 London cholera epidemic.

- EPM307 session on Cancer Epidemiology This 2-3 hour session is part of our Distance Learning Epidemiology module on the Global Epidemiology of Non-Communicable Diseases. The session was jointly developed by the School and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). The session covers how data about cancer are collected and used, how secular and geographic variations in cancer burden can be interpreted, the most common risk factors associated with cancer globally, and how cancer can be prevented and controlled. Note that this session includes video clips and may take a few minutes to open.

Assessment varies from module to module but will include a combination of unseen written examinations and written assignments. Details are given in the module specifications.

You receive your study materials after you register. Flexible study

We know that if you have a full-time job, family or other commitments, and wish to study at a distance, you will have many calls on your time. The course allows you to study independently, at a time and pace that suits you (subject to some course-specific deadlines) using the comprehensive study materials provided, with support available from academic staff.You have between 1-5 years in which to complete the Postgraduate Certificate, and between 2-5 years in which to complete the Postgraduate Diploma or the MSc.

The study year for most modules runs from the beginning of October through to the June exams, while two modules run from the beginning of January through to assignment submission at the end of August. Tutorial support is available throughout this time. Students carrying out projects are assigned personal supervisors to support their project work which is mostly carried out between June and the end of September in their final year.

Blended learning: taking modules in London

After successful completion of a minimum number of core modules, Postgraduate Diploma and MSc students may also be eligible for the 'blended learning option', which allows for the study of up to two modules only (from a restricted list) at the School in London during the Spring or Summer terms in place of distance learning modules. The MSc Economics course is a twelve-month taught course that provides rigorous training in the main theoretical and empirical aspects of economics.

The course is designed to provide a foundation for a career as a professional economist or for study towards a PhD in economics.

A strong emphasis is placed on the core areas of microeconomics, macroeconomics and econometrics. However, you also have the opportunity to choose optional modules in a wider range of areas, including financial economics, growth theory and environmental economics.

Research skills are developed throughout the course, especially during the dissertation, which you work on over the summer under the supervision of a member of staff.

A special aspect of our course is a dedicated unit in research methods, which provides extensive training in a range of software packages, including EViews, Stata and Matlab.

The need for rigorous evaluation of components of health care is increasingly recognised worldwide. An important type of evaluation is the randomised controlled clinical trial. These courses will give students an understanding of trials which will equip them to work in this increasingly important field.

You will meet the English language requirement if you have passed, within the past three years:

- Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English when a minimum overall score of B or 190 is achieved;

Method of assessment

Assessment varies from module to module but will include a combination of unseen written examinations and written assignments. Details are given in the module specifications.

Examinations take place once a year in June (please note: it is not possible to hold examinations at other times of year). These are normally held in a student’s country of residence. We have examination centres in over 180 countries worldwide (for details please visit the assessment and examinations section).

The SF6D utility index for valuing health status was developed at Sheffield. This index is used by decision-makers around the world to evaluate the cost effectiveness of health care interventions.

We’re one of the few stand-alone economics departments in the north of England and we’re not part of a large business school. This means you will be part of an economics community, where you will get to know your tutors personally and build friendships with the other students on the masters courses.

Our building is in the heart of the campus in the city centre and has undergone a £3.5 million refurbishment. You will have access to the latest economics computer software such as STATA and MATLAB. Our building is close to The Diamond and the Information Commons which are state-of-the-art facilities for private study with access to the latest economics books and journals.

Our courses

We offer a range of masters courses both full-time and part-time. All of our courses give you a thorough technical grounding in economic theory and the techniques of applied economic analysis.

Our courses allow you to specialise in a number of different areas, for example finance and financial economics. If you want to advance your knowledge in one of these areas, Sheffield is one of the best places in the UK.

For each course you’ll need to pass eight taught modules over two semesters, four in each. Modules will be taught mainly through lectures, tutorials and computer labs. Assessment is mostly by exams but also includes some coursework. The compulsory dissertation gives you the chance to conduct your own research over a ten week period.
