This programme provides students with the specialiced knowledge and skills that are required to establish a company and prepares students to successfully establish their businesses in international markets.

Following the stages of the founding process, you will acquire in-depth knowledge that you can directly apply in your own start-up project such as Innovation Management, Law, Marketing or Risk Management. In order to found a business during your studies or upon graduation, the curriculum covers all four essential business foundation stages:

  • 1st semester: Conceptual Development
  • 2nd semester: Business Modelling
  • 3rd semester: Business Implementation
  • 4th semester: Business Growth

To complete your professional profile, you will also learn the entrepreneurial skills that are necessary to manage start-up businesses in the long term, such as Project Management, Business Ethics and Stakeholder Communication. Choose from 3 different tracks

All variations offer students the chance to earn a Master’s degree while simultaneously founding their own start-up. All 3 tracks last 4 semesters (2 years) and cater for a variety of entrepreneurial interests:

About the course

The results of unsustainable human development in the 21st century are evident as climate change, species extinction, pollution, poverty and inequality become inescapable global realities. The next big challenge for society is to transform our economy to incorporate the principles of sustainability. This presents an exciting opportunity to rethink, redesign and rebuild a positive future for business practice.

The MSc in Sustainability, Entrepreneurship and Design (with Professional Development) is an 18-month programme – 12 months for the study at Brunel followed by a six-month professional development phase. There is an option to complete the MSc in Sustainability,
Entrepreneurship and Design in 12 months (without the professional development phase) but students will be encouraged to engage with the professional development phase to achieve the maximum from the programme.

Brunel University also offers the Graduate Entrepreneur post-study visa, which represents a perfect opportunity for our international graduates to apply their new skills in the UK following graduation.

The course is jointly run between the College of Health and Life Sciences, the School of Engineering, Design and Physical Sciences, and Brunel Business School.

Aims

This programme will equip entrepreneurial minded graduates with two essential ingredients:

- firstly, the mindset and ability to play a key role in building a sustainable world – one that is not only prosperous, but also environmentally stable and socially inclusive

Teaching

The programme will be delivered beginning with an overview of core concepts and followed by progressively deeper consideration and application of the concepts later on through a self-directed learning approach. It is structured to provide leadership opportunities and move progressively from learning the "rules of the game" to "playing the game". This means that as the programme progresses it becomes less instructor-led and more student-led where students direct their learning towards their own needs and tap the collective wisdom of the group via project work.

There will be four integrated streams:

About this degree

Students learn all necessary skills using 'rapid prototyping' and 'lean' entrepreneurship tools together with inventive practices from the creative industries.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

Dissertation/report

All students undertake an independent research project working with a real-world mentor from the London creative start-up community and a supervisor from the Creative and Collaborative Enterprise MA teaching team. The project culminates in a 10,000-word dissertation and includes a high-quality business or new venture plan.

Teaching and learning

The programme is delivered through a combination of practical tutorials, lectures, seminars, masterclasses, and class discussion. Students are given the opportunity to attend weekly lectures from leading global entrepreneurs and venture capitalists. Assessment is through presentations, coursework, long essay, class participation, open-book and unseen examination, and the dissertation.

Careers

The MA is aimed at students who want to work in one of the nine creative sectors recognised by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport; these include advertising, architecture, IT, and the visual arts.

Employability

The creative sector now accounts for around 10% of the UK’s GDP. In recent years employment in the sector has grown four times faster than the workforce as a whole. By graduation students will have acquired a range of essential business skills, be well versed in developing and harnessing their creative powers, and will have learnt how to appreciate the environment within which their businesses will operate.

Strong demand for construction project managers means there will be significant opportunities for you to take up a well-paid, challenging and international career. The course is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), which gives it additional credibility in the eyes of potential employers.

In the second year, for one semester, you’ll undertake an internship, study in another country or join a research group. This valuable experience will enhance your employability and further develop your theoretical and practical skills.

Internship

This option offers the opportunity to spend three months working full-time in one of the many companies/industries with which we have close links. You may be able to extend this over more than one semester in cases where it is adjacent to a vacation period. We will endeavour to help those who prefer this option to find and secure a suitable position but ultimately we are in the hands of the employers who are free to decide who they take into their organisation.

Research

If you take this option, you will be assigned to our Architecture and Built Environment Research Group. There is every possibility that you may contribute to published research and therefore you may be named as part of the research team, which would be a great start to a research career.

Study Abroad

We have exchange agreements with universities all over the world, including partners in Europe, Asia, the Americas and Oceania. If you take the Study Abroad option you will spend a semester at one of these partners, continuing your studies in English but in a new cultural and learning environment. Please note that this option may require you to obtain a visa for study in the other country.

The course is particularly aimed at people with at least some background in the construction industry. If you have a different background you may wish to consider our MSc Project Management.

Teaching And Assessment

Your tutors will use a variety of teaching methods including lectures, seminars and workshops. As this is a Masters course there is a major element of independent learning and self-motivated reflection.

During the second year you’ll undertake an internship or consultancy project for a whole semester. These can be related to any business and management discipline, given the generic content of this Masters programme. Research-Rich Learning

As a Masters student you’ll develop your research skills to a new and higher level. Your research supervisor will help you submit a proposal for your Masters dissertation or consultancy project and then discuss its development through to completion in the final semester.

If you decide on a Masters consultancy project, rather than a dissertation, you’ll still undertake primary and desk research. Through your reading, reflection and research, you’ll be expected to show a deep understanding of the issues that are involved in the client brief.

One of the key challenges facing any student planning to undertake a business-related degree is how to compete in the job market with business graduates around the world who are also trying to ignite their business career. We know from experience and talking to employers that international awareness is a key differentiator. Many of our students have already taken the first step by travelling hundreds or thousands of miles to study in an unfamiliar environment. However the international exchange option takes that to the next level. We are developing exchange opportunities in Asia, Europe and South America that will give students the opportunity to create a truly unique selling proposition to future employers. Students spend one semester studying business (taught and assessed in English) in another international domain. Internship

This option offers the opportunity to spend three months working full-time in one of the many companies/industries with which we have close links. You may be able to extend this over more than one semester in cases where it is adjacent to a vacation period. We will endeavour to help those who prefer this option to find and secure a suitable position but ultimately we are in the hands of the employers who are free to decide who they take into their organisation.

Research

If you take this option, you will be assigned to our Engineering, Physics and Materials Research Group. There is every possibility that you may contribute to published research and therefore you may be named as part of the research team, which would be a great start to a research career.

Study Abroad

We have exchange agreements with universities all over the world, including partners in Europe, Asia, the Americas and Oceania. If you take the Study Abroad option you will spend a semester at one of these partners, continuing your studies in English but in a new cultural and learning environment. Please note that this option may require you to obtain a visa for study in the other country.

Advanced Practice stage

The Advanced Practice version of this course offers you a valuable opportunity to secure a work placement or complete a group consultancy project, giving you experience of the workplace environment or live business issues, and an excellent way to put your learning into practice. This stage of the programme will take place between your second and final semester, and is a semester long (15 weeks) in duration. Internships as part of the Advanced Practice stage may be paid or unpaid. The alternative consultancy module allows you to work in teams with a business organisation working on consultancy-based projects on real business scenarios. Whether you choose the internship or consultancy project you will successfully develop your business skills and further enhance your employability.

September starts

If you choose to start your Masters in September, your programme will last for up to 21 months. You will have a summer break after Semester 2, and commence your Advanced Practice stage in September.

January starts

If you choose to start your Masters with Advanced Practice in January, your programme will run for 16-18 months. You will commence the Advanced Practice stage of the programme in September, immediately after your second semester. Please note that there is no summer break included in this programme for those starting in January.

May starts

For those starting your Masters with Advanced Practice, you will start the Advanced Practice stage of the programme in January, straight after you have completed your second semester. Your programme will run for a total of 16-18 months. Please note that there is no summer break included in this programme for those starting in January.

How will I be taught and assessed?

You will be taught through a mix of lectures, seminars and workshops to enable you to grow your knowledge of the business world. In addition, you will be expected to engage in independent study involving directed and self-directed learning.

You will meet this tutor at regular intervals across your period of study.

Careers and further study

Graduates will be well suited to join a wide range of businesses, including graduate training schemes or even start up their own businesses or begin a professional qualification with one of the marketing industry bodies.

Upon successfully completing your course, you may undertake further professional development and training through Professional Pathways programmes.
