An in-depth immersion in multiple facets of branding, including areas such as strategic brand-building, sonic branding and digital marketing, is facilitated by a team of academics who are experts in the field of branding. The teaching team is led by senior lecture and top place branding academic Dr Keith Dinnie, author of the world’s first academic textbook on the topic of nation branding. What will you study on the MA Strategic Branding and Stakeholder Communication?
The course begins by providing the core subjects of branding, focusing on strategy, stakeholders and communication, so as to embed a core understanding of the field. With this core knowledge you will progress onto two compulsory modules into the essential topics of analytics and digital, as well as two further optional modules which allow you to extend your understanding in areas of particular interest. Finally you will complete a dissertation project on a topic of interest that you select.

Modules

Core modules on the course will cover a variety of issues connected to corporate social responsibility, including international standards and regulations, managing local content, the Global Compact, stakeholder engagement strategies and the triple bottom line in corporate sustainability. Also covered will be issues such as supply chain management, building value through value chain analysis and effective monitoring and evaluation approaches.

Modules specific to the two different exit routes will cover the following:

Those undertaking the energy route will examine the relationship of energy to issues around global and national security and conflict management. The impact of energy on health from the perspective of those both working inside the energy sector and those outside it who are affected by its operations will also be studied.

Those undertaking the sustainable development route will examine the impact of globalisation on communities, how to manage community development projects and developing leadership skills.

All students will study research design and methodology in preparation for the dissertation. Food security exists when everybody has access to sufficient, nutritious and safe food at all times. However, various predictable and unpredictable challenges around the globe, including changes in climate (i.e. rising/falling temperatures, droughts and floods, diseases and pests), market tendencies, insufficient access to food for households, unequal distribution of resources and opportunities and inadequate food distribution channels, prevent the realisation of this idealistic and often oversimplified term.

Despite a growing number of large-scale, high-external input farms and enough food production to feed the world, post-harvest losses result in less optimal yields and (locally) produced foods are often used for other purposes, such as animal feed or biofuel. Consequentially, 795 million1 undernourished people around the globe do not have access to this lost and wasted food.

Ensuring access to food for everyone is the key to ending hunger, which will require improved collaboration between various stakeholders - producer (organisations), the private sector, governments, traders and development organisations. Structures, policies and programmes must be continuously adapted to a variety of external factors, such as the economy, environment and current social structures. Rethinking of informal rules and habits is another essential step in attaining food security, considering even members of the same household are not guaranteed equal access to food. In light of these external factors and challenges, this specialisation presents various interventions needed to combat hunger and ensure food security for everyone.

Marine spatial planning is now developing as a key component of marine management. It aims to deliver a more organised sharing of sea space between demands as diverse as nature conservation, tourism, ports and shipping, renewable energy, fishing, aquaculture and mineral extraction. It seeks to integrate social, economic and environmental uses of the coast and sea.

Marine planning is being taken up by coastal nations around the world, including Australia, China, the United States of America, South Africa and several European nations, such as Germany, Portugal, the Netherlands, Poland, Norway, Sweden and the United Kingdom. Some nations, such as the UK, now have statutory provisions for planning their coastal and marine waters and bodies and procedures for preparing marine plans and implementing them. Delivery and assessment

Delivery will be a mix of full day teaching and online resource support. Teaching days will be spread at regular intervals throughout each semester. One day per core module is a ‘Masterclass’ for the Social Enterprise Sector in Scotland. Students work with detailed case studies and input from industry representatives to provide a high-quality learning experience. This is further enhanced with a range of web-based resources to support and reinforce learning on the course.
Assessment will be through a mix of coursework, presentations, online participation and an important social enterprise research project. The project will contribute to the Social Enterprise Laboratory at Stirling.

The stakeholder relations manager, the corporate journalist, the digital promoter, the brand content manager - these are the jobs of the future, and the graduates filling these posts will need to know how to do their public relations in an integrated way.

The corporate narrative now has to compete with the user generated content. Traditional news and feature journalism is being pushed aside by citizen journalism and brand journalism, causing PR practitioners to re-think their influencer strategies. Advertisers who were once focused on campaigns in print media are now using rich online content, while native advertising is blurring the lines between public relations and advertising. Those who can surf the waves of this multifaceted world will be the most effective (employable) strategic communicators.

The programme -

As the roles of digital newsroom manager, multimedia advertiser, marketing professional, and corporate PR continue to converge, it is increasingly important that students gain first-hand experience of these functions. With opportunities for networking, live client briefs and portfolio development all built into the course, graduates leave Southampton Solent with a wealth of industry relevant experience to show potential employers.

The ‘Professional Development’ unit gives students work-placement and freelance opportunities, enhancing their professional skillset. Students will also be able to pitch for paid work at Solent Creatives, who specialise in connecting students with businesses who need creative support. Learners are encouraged to carry out additional work experience alongside their regular studies. The course team’s close links with industry have helped past students to negotiate placements at top local and national agencies.

Students also have the opportunity to access an extensive media loans service, where they can borrow high-end video production and photography equipment.

Course Content

Units include:

- PR in a Multimedia World (30 credits) - this unit covers how the theory and practice of PR changes as communication moves across paid, owned, shared and earned media. Paradigm shifts from traditional PR approaches are considered in the context of actual PR campaigns currently running.
- Multimedia Campaign Planning (30 credits) - students get the opportunity to develop and implement a number of campaign activities across a wide variety of platforms, testing their ability to integrate paid, owned, shared and earned media in a PR campaign.
- Media Measurement & Evaluation (15 credits) - this unit introduces students to the measurement techniques applied in advertising, marketing, promotion and PR sectors, including the evolution of RoE (return on engagement).
- Research Methods (15 credits) - this unit raises the students’ research skills to master’s level and includes SPSS software and other methodologies that are relevant to their particular areas of interest. This is a shared unit.
- Professional Development (30 credits) - this unit positions the MA programme in terms of the student’s career aspiration, identifying skill sets and development needs in a personal development programme. This forms the basis of a freelance/workplace project and informs the student’s choice of dissertation topic.
- Major Project/Dissertation (60 credits) - the culmination of this MA programme. Theory and practice learned in the previous units inform a final research project.

Teaching, learning and assessment -

Work experience:

One unit (Professional Practice) requires a work placement or freelance project to be completed. Students are encouraged to source their own client (through Solent Creatives) or to find a work placement that is appropriate to their career ambitions. The course team will be available to provide support and guidance as necessary.

The placements and projects vary in length, depending on client needs. The minimum required is a two week placement, but on average the client projects last much longer.

Assessment:

Assessment methods include essays, practical portfolios, reflective reports, and campaign outputs. The major project/dissertation unit includes a presentation during the early stages of development. ‘PR in a Multimedia World’ includes an exam.

Our facilities -

We have a fully equipped IT centre with both PC and Mac computers. These feature industry-standard image manipulation, video and audio editing software. Access to camera equipment and professional recording devices for podcast and video creation is highly likely, and access to photographic equipment is always available.

Web-based learning -

Solent’s virtual learning environment (VLE) provides quick online access to assignments, lecture notes, suggested reading and other course information. The unit materials are posted on the VLE and students are expected to have reviewed them prior to attending class. The materials include journal articles, videos and web-based resources.

Delivery Model

This program is delivered through our blended model which features a short introductory online period, a five-day on-campus residency and online course work. This flexible model enables students to benefit from an on-campus learning experience while maintaining personal and professional responsibilities.

Residency
The on-campus residency is an intensive period of collaborative study which enables students to become acquainted with RRU, their teachers and their cohort with the aim of preparing students for the rest of the program. The normal schedule for residencies is from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. with homework, readings and team assignments completed outside of these hours, so it is recommended that students keep their evenings available for these activities.

Online Learning
The online portion of our Graduate Certificate programs takes place over the Internet. Several different information delivery methods are used, including textbooks, articles, case studies, interactive learning and 'chat' bulletin boards for corresponding with team members. Courses contain assignment due dates and team work, requiring students to plan carefully to meet course timelines.

The two online courses are taken consecutively and each course lasts for a period of 10 weeks. Each course requires a level of effort of approximately 20 hours per week. During the first online course, the amount of time required may be higher as students familiarize themselves with our online learning platform. LEAD 580, the residency course, continues online at the same time as the first online course (EXMN652). This is to complete the final assignment in LEAD580.

You will examine the ways in which businesses can improve their environmental performance and enhance their social responsibility.

Gain a well-grounded and critical understanding of the factors that shape the relationships between business, environment and society, and understand the wide range of policy frameworks and management initiatives that relate to environmental management and corporate social responsibility.

Examine perspectives from government, business and stakeholder groups (such as pressure and community groups), drawing on the expertise of researchers, practitioners and researchers.

During your studies, you will be introduced to a range of management tools and shown how they are applied in practical situations. Examine the factors that shape the success or failure of these initiatives – both from a corporate as well as a societal perspective.

This course is ideal if you wish to develop corporate responsibility strategies and enhance an organisation’s social and environmental contributions. It can also lead you to careers in government or non-governmental organisations working in partnership with, or trying to influence business practice.

The demands placed upon managers in the library and information profession are increasingly complex. Library and information managers have to cope with rapid change and development. This CILIP accredited degree (Diploma and Masters) has been devised as a response to the needs of the profession for Continuing Professional Development: to help professional practitioners cope with the demands placed upon them, and to prepare mid-career practitioners for the next stage in their career. It is therefore not designed to provide the student with a first qualification in information and library studies, but to update and progress existing knowledge and qualifications.

The university has a proud tradition of research excellence, as demonstrated in the most recent Research Excellence Framework (2014) assessment. It placed the university in the top 50 institutions for research power and intensity. It submitted 77% of eligible staff and 95% of the university's research was of an internationally recognised standard.

Course detail

The objectives of the MSc in Management of Library and Information Services course are to:

- enable senior library and information service staff to manage key resources through an understanding of their organisational value;
- provide managers with specific skills in core activities;
- offer an academic component to the career advancement of professionals;
- enable employers to support Continuous Professional Development without the need for breaks in employment.

Format

This programme is offered in flexible distance learning mode as it is recognised that prospective students will not wish a mid-career break in order to update their qualifications. The length of the degree scheme is normally three years, but students may take between two and five years to complete their studies. Normally, the first two years (Part One) consist of a taught element, whereby students complete 120 credits. Those wishing to finish study at the end of the taught element will be eligible for a Diploma (120 credits). The remaining period (Part Two) is to complete a dissertation (60 credits), to gain the Master’s qualification (180 credits).

Students on this course will be required to attend two compulsory residential study schools in Aberystwyth. The first will be in September at the commencement of the course, and is designed to prepare students for the taught element (Part One) of the programme. The second is a research study school (offered during April and September) and is designed to prepare students for the dissertation (Part Two).

Contact time can be arranged remotely with your tutor. Attendance at at least two study schools is required and these provide the main contact.

Assessment

There is a variety of assignments in Part One, including reports, presentations, essays, critical reviews and case studies which enable you to relate theoretical knowledge to your own workplace. Part Two, is assessed on the Dissertation.

Completion requires accumulation of 120 credits for the award of the Diploma and 180 credits for the award of the Master’s degree.
