With access to some of the UK's leading sports specialists and resources - from university sports teams to elite athletes - you will have the opportunity to provide therapy support on your placement, harnessing the experience and knowledge needed to be a successful sports therapist.

As well as building skills and knowledge in the assessment and treatment of injury alongside the management of rehabilitation, you will develop a further understanding of different aspects of research design. This course links together the extensive expertise from a range of sport and health academics and is accredited by the Society of Sports Therapists.

The course is designed for sports scientists (or similar graduates) who wish to apply their knowledge to a therapy setting and learn clinical skills. Completing the course provides eligibility for membership of The Society of Sports Therapists (SST) which gives you licence to practice as a sports therapist. In the most recent (2014-15) Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education (DLHE) survey, 100% of graduates from this course were in work or further study within six months.

More about this course

London Metropolitan is proud to have been one of the first universities in the UK to develop this ground-breaking degree. It tackles a growing demand for professionals, with sports-specific knowledge, and equips them with the tools necessary to become successful professional sports therapists.

This course focuses on giving you the ability to diagnose, treat and rehabilitate sports injuries or dysfunction to become a competent postgraduate sports therapist. It includes the development of practical, patient-handling and clinical decision-making skills. In addition, those who successfully complete the course are eligible for membership of the Society of Sports Therapists.

The University has a long history of teaching sports science and therapy courses, and an excellent record of graduate employment in these fields. You will benefit from a range of specialist resources within our £30m Science Centre including a fully-functioning public clinic.

After the course

Many former students work with professional, semi-professional and amateur sporting institutions. These include football, rugby, ice hockey and basketball teams, and professional cyclists. Roles have also been plentiful in private practice, providing sports therapy and rehabilitation services within health and leisure centres. There is also the option to pursue further research.

Moving to one campus

Between 2016 and 2020 we're investing £125 million in the London Metropolitan University campus, moving all of our activity to our current Holloway campus in Islington, north London. This will mean the teaching location of some courses will change over time.

Whether you will be affected will depend on the duration of your course, when you start and your mode of study. The earliest moves affecting new students will be in September 2017. This may mean you begin your course at one location, but over the duration of the course you are relocated to one of our other campuses. Our intention is that no full-time student will change campus more than once during a course of typical duration.

There is a wide range of equipment, including motorised and non-motorised treadmills, cycle ergometers, an isokinetic dynamometer, and blood and gas analysis equipment. In addition, at Medway Park, the School of Sport and Exercise Sciences has its own cutting-edge sports therapy clinic, rehabilitation gymnasium, sports science laboratories and a respiratory clinic.

There is also a hypoxic environmental chamber, and analytical chemistry, respiratory testing and psychobiology laboratories. These specialist rooms have been set up with over £700,000 of new equipment, including an anti-gravity treadmill, a 3D video analysis system, 2D force pedals, ultra-sound imaging, near-infrared spectroscopy and a gait analysis system.

Using a problem-based learning and practical skills development approach, you will gain an advanced understanding of: assessment, diagnosis and rehabilitation of a range of health and sports related conditions and develop these skills through supervised clinical experience. You will explore evidence-based practice, therapeutic interventions and rehabilitation combined with physiological, biomechanical and psychosocial factors, evaluating how they impact upon or are affected by health and exercise, sports injury, treatment and rehabilitation and you will apply your learning from these modules to conduct a self-initiated research project.

Professional accreditation

This course is the only one of its kind in the North of England to be accredited by the Sports Therapy Organisation and BASRaT.

What you study

Practical experience is an essential element of the programme and over the course of the programme you will attain 400 hours of supervised clinical experience in a range of settings. You will benefit from hands-on experience with local sports teams. Teaching

A wide variety of teaching strategies appropriate to each module is used, including formal lectures and tutorials, seminars, online learning, practical workshops, problem-based learning, work-based learning, guest speakers and student-led research projects.

You have the opportunity to develop continuing professional development throughout all modules on the programme. The delivery of modules is via blended learning, which uses a combination of face-to-face learning and online delivery. The modules have a site in the University’s virtual learning environment (Blackboard), which adheres as a minimum to the University’s Threshold Quality Standards.

Assessment methods include assignments, critical review, presentations, portfolios and practical examinations.

These methods allow you to demonstrate a critical and systematic understanding and application of the relevant curriculum. Professional and key transferable skills are also developed through these assessments. You are required to undertake appropriate research, using the skills developed in the core modules and this provides the impetus for the development of your project proposal. The programme commences with a comprehensive induction where you will be introduced to the other students, the staff on the programme and the VLE where all learning materials and programme documents will be situated, and through which online activities will be conducted. Teaching

A range of face-to-face contact and online learning, teaching and assessment strategies will be employed in the various modules. The key methods of learning and teaching are a mix of online activities and face-to-face Professional development workshops.

Online activities will include individual and group problem based learning, facilitated online via Wiki, discussion workshops supported via [email protected] CPD workshops will require attendance at the University and will involve practical workshops and problem based learning activities. No previous online learning experience is needed as you will be introduced to and practice all the tools we will use during the induction period and first taught element.

Assessments vary from CPD portfolio, essay / report, e-presentation, critical review, journal article to give a wide variety of experience in presenting your research in a various media formats.

Teaching/learning method:
Self-directed learning. Each student will be assigned a supervisor and required to complete a team project. A study plan (learning contract) will be formulated in the beginning of the study, according to the interest of the student and the supervisor. The Human Performance Laboratory (HPL) at QMUL combines the expertise of sports medicine clinicians, surgeons, engineers and sports scientists with state-of-the-art physiological testing and motion analysis equipment. This collaborative venture offers clinical, educational, research and athlete support service applications in the laboratory or field based settings.

The capabilities of the HPL can be broadly divided into two areas: musculoskeletal biomechanics and physiological testing.

Musculoskeletal biomechanics
The HPL carries 4 Codamotion Cx1 infra-red scanning units that are used extensively for 3-dimensional motion analysis. This system is fully integrated with 2 ground embedded Kistler force plates and a 16 channel wireless EMG system. The integration of these systems allows for full analysis of movement, forces associated with movement and measuring muscular effort during movement. In addition, the HPL also boasts a 64 channel EMG system for multichannel work and an isokinetic dynamometer, which can be used for both research and rehabilitation.

Physiological testing
Detailed analysis of pulmonary gas exchange can be made using an online gas analysis system, in addition to cardiac monitoring using a 12-lead ECG system, during exercise on a treadmill or the electromagnetically braked cycle ergometer. Measures can also be made out in the field, from simple tests of flexibility, strength, speed, power and cardiorespiratory fitness, to comprehensive measurement of expired air using the portable on-line gas analysis system.

This well-established MSc Sport & Exercise Physiotherapy course aims to develop sports physiotherapy practitioners to work at a specialist level within their field.

The course is suited to individuals working in a wide variety of sectors that involve managing people with sport or exercise related injuries, whether at high performance sport level or in a physiotherapy clinic.

The course has evolved thanks to input from national organisations such as the Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Sports Medicine (ACPSM) and international organisations such as the International Federation of Sports Physical Therapy (IFSPT).

It is designed to help you develop towards ACPSM Gold standard level, using competencies defined by IFSP, as well as developing the knowledge, skills and behaviours that could help you pursue a career in sport and exercise.

The course aims to develop your evaluative, critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and to increase your practical and theoretical knowledge of sports science and injury, so that you can apply these skills in the further advancement of your career.

Structure

The programme is modular, with four taught modules and a dissertation. Full-time students undertake the taught modules in one academic year, earning 120 credits, and a postgraduate diploma award. A dissertation module (60 credits) then leads to an MSc (180 credits total). After the taught modules, as a full-time student, you have up to a further six months to complete the dissertation.

Part-time students undertake the taught modules over two academic years and then have a further two years to complete the dissertation.

Teaching

Self-study contributes to approximately 75% of the notional learning hours.

At the dissertation stage of the MSc, you are also required to undertake a research project involving data collection and some degree of originality.

Assessment

A variety of assessment procedures include written assignments, oral presentations, poster presentations and small projects.

This was balanced with teaching me how to highlight personal areas of strengths and weakness in order to direct my own learning, a skill that has been invaluable in ensuring I continually learn and develop in the highly competitive environment of Professional sport.
