This MSc is designed to give clinicians and practitioners a deeper understanding of sports medicine, sports injuries and exercise medicine. The programme covers the evidence-based management of sports medicine and musculoskeletal injuries, and emphasises the vital role of physical activity in the prevention and treatment of chronic disease. This MSc can be taken full time over one year, part-time over two years, or via flexible distance learning.

Degree information

The programme focuses on sports injuries and their prevention and treatment, and provides a thorough grounding in relevant areas of anatomy, biomechanics, exercise physiology and psychology, as well as the fundamentals of exercise in maintaining and improving health. Students develop essential research skills through an independent research project.

All students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme consists of seven core modules (105 credits), one optional module (15 credits) and a research project (60 credits). Clinical sessions are spread over the year: commitment is equivalent to one half-day per week over three 12-week semesters. Clinic options include sports injury, physiotherapy and podiatry, exercise testing, and team visits.

A Postgraduate Diploma (120 credits, full-time nine months) is offered.

Dissertation/report
All MSc students undertake an independent research project from a diverse range of available topics, which culminates in a dissertation, an oral examination and a presentation.

Teaching and learning
Teaching is delivered through a combination of formal lectures, hands-on practical sessions, small group seminars, clinics and field trips, and will be delivered by lecturers who are highly experienced in their field. Up-to-date, evidence-based practice will be emphasised throughout and students' contribution through discussion is considered key. Assessment is through written examination, presentations, coursework and Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE), as well as the dissertation and viva voce (oral) examination.

Programme Structure

To complete the MSc Sports Digital and Media Technologies, students must complete 8 x 15 credit modules. Here at the Institute for Creative Leather Technologies (ICLT), you will cover the science and technology of leather manufacture in a way designed to suit graduates for senior tannery positions. Whilst developing the critical mind it provides an excellent base for a move into Research and Development departments within chemical companies, tanneries and brands or into academic careers.

Leather is returning to prominence as nearly all alternatives require using up non-renewable carbon-based materials. Scientific advances in conjunction with environmental responsibility have transformed the leather manufacture industry into a modern scientific process, creating a highly sustainable material with high value in many sectors such as sports, automobiles, luxury goods and fashion.

Course content

The MSc Leather Technology (Professional) course is unique in that it aims to provide the opportunity to acquire and/or enhance technical skills within the subject of leather technology. Students will study within an environment that encourages the development of intellectual creativity as well as providing transferable skills to undertake research with respect to advanced technologies, developing skills and flexibility necessary to discriminate between technical and entrepreneurial issues and relating these to the needs of the leather industry such as successful management of the commercial operations.

This course offers students the opportunity to work and learn in a state-of-the-art teaching tannery for some of the modules, and will also be working with staff with a mix of academic and industrial experience. Many of the staff carry out research in various leather subjects and over the last 20 years Northampton leather research has built a leading world-wide reputation.

Industry leaders are frequent visitors to meet students and provide knowledge on current technical and commercial aspects of leather and its fascinating chain from farm to fashion or one of its many other end uses.

The MSc Leather Technology (Professional) course is delivered to meet student flexibility. In order for you to complete Master’s level qualification, you must complete up to seven modules and an independent research dissertation. During the course, you will complete six compulsory modules and choose up to two optional modules. The amazing feats of world-class athletes across the huge range of sports has projected the issues of performance into the public eye, and sports nutrition is now recognised as a key part of supporting training and competition at all levels of participation. The Masters degree in Sport and Exercise Nutrition at the University of Westminster offers the chance to study the science behind sports nutrition, and its applications for both the 'weekend warrior' and the elite athlete. It also puts the controversies surrounding the use of supplements under scientific scrutiny, looking at the key evidence for and against performance benefits. The aim of the course is to produce sports nutritionists who are strongly focused on the science behind the subject, but who also have some experience of the practicalities of delivering sound guidance to individuals and teams who are looking to use nutrition as part of their training programmes. Our program consists of core courses that equip students with the basic theme and foundation on intelligent building technology and management concepts, and a variety of electives that cover topics from safety and health issues, risk management, energy management, to impact analysis and use of advanced building materials, indoor air quality, facility management, etc. The program aims to provide a balance between both frontier technology updates and management strategies, in both a quantitative and qualitative way.

Curriculum

All students are required to take a total of 30 credits to complete the MSc(IBTM) program. The program consists of two core courses that all students are required to take. The remaining credits will be taken from the elective courses. Subject to the approval of the Program Director, students may take a maximum of nine credits of non-IBTM courses, which may include a maximum of six credits of CIEM courses from the MSc program in Civil Infrastructural Engineering and Management and a maximum of six credits of MESF or MECH courses offered by the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering as partial fulfillment of the graduation requirement.

Before you start the course, we supply you with an induction pack that includes a reading list to introduce you to the general management and specialist modules. We also run an induction programme to prepare you for the course. During the induction we assess your existing study, IT and language (for international students) skills. This assessment leads to an individual learning plan to improve and develop your skills. We also provide language tuition as needed, if your first language is not English. Dissertation workshops help you to prepare for your dissertation.

CONSUMER SCIENCES

Students must complete 30 hours of coursework. A minimum of 24 semester hours of course credit, including HES 509, two courses in statistics, and 15 hours in courses in the area of specialization are required. Students must complete 6 credit hours of thesis research and write a thesis. A final oral examination is required upon completion of the thesis, and a manuscript of publishable quality based on the thesis research is expected of each Plan I degree candidate.

FAMILY FINANCIAL PLANNING AND COUNSELING

In the financial planning specialty within the 30-hour Master of Science degree program, students will study economic and social influences on the family and learn how to help individuals and families achieve their financial goals. Coursework includes 24 hours of financial planning coursework and 6 hours of electives in the area of specialization. By taking two courses each semester, students may complete this M.S. degree in less than two years. The program is offered both in Tuscaloosa and by distance.

CONSUMER CONFLICT MANAGEMENT, NEGOTIATION, AND MEDIATION

The certificate requires the successful completion of 15 hours of course work, in addition to the hours required for the masters in the student’s discipline. All 15 hours may count toward the master’s degree. Students must apply and gain admission to the UA Graduate School. Students must adhere to all UA Graduate School admission policies and deadlines. Students who wish to complete the Graduate Certificate in Conflict Management, Negotiation, and Mediation must meet admissions criteria for the Master’s degree in General Studies in Human Environmental Sciences with a 3.0 or higher GPA. This is an intensive, full time programme leading to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) alongside your academic PGDE award. University-based study includes: a full time block of three weeks at the start of the course; one day per week until January; week-long, full time study blocks between January and June and a number of conference days.
Placements are organised in our Partnership schools in the Greater Merseyside area. For the majority of the training you will gain your teaching experience in a “Home School” with a six week placement in an “alternative” school after Christmas. This innovative model ensures that you feel genuinely part of the staff whilst on school placement and can monitor and gain satisfaction from your impact on your pupils’ progress over time.

You will also be allocated a Teacher Mentor who will organise and supervise your school-based training. Your Mentor will be supported by your LJMU Tutor who will visit your school several times to monitor your progress. Additional professional development sessions are organised in school during placements.

Tutorial support is an important part of the LJMU learning process and you will receive a personalised service that will enable you to set targets and achieve your potential. Your Personal Tutor will support your academic and professional development and will meet with you formally during the year.

What is this course about?

There has been a growing demand for Strength and Conditioning practitioners outside of professional sport structures, with the increasing professionalisation of amateur sports such as the GAA. The 'fitness trainer' of a decade ago that tended to be assume sole responsibility for the physical conditioning of inter-county Gaelic football and hurling/camogie teams, has now been replaced by 'Strength and Conditioning teams'. There is also a pattern of Strength and Conditioning practitioners working closely with special populations (paediatric & seniors), physiotherapists, sports rehabilitators and athletic therapists in both prevention and rehabilitation of athletes to return them to performance from injury. This new two year part-time programme will provide an opportunity for students to study for a MSc in Strength and Conditioning, corresponding to a Level 9 Qualification (90 ECTS credits). The overall aim of the programme is to provide an intellectually challenging applied postgraduate programme of study that will give graduates advanced knowledge, understanding and practical coaching skills in Strength and Conditioning. This will enable them to work with both elite athletes and specialist population groups. Graduates of the programme will be eligible to apply for membership to the Irish Institute of Sport (IIS), United Kingdom Strength and Conditioning Association (UKSCA) and the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) based in the United States of America.

Programme Details:
The first part of the programme is designed to develop the knowledge, skills and analytical techniques in the sub-disciplines of Advanced Resistance Training, Explosive Conditioning, Metabolic Conditioning, Sports Nutrition and Periodisation. With the primary emphasis on preparing athletes and players for optimum sports performance, these modules combine more advanced theoretical and practical elements of Strength and Conditioning, providing students with the skillls to operate as a Strength and Conditioning Practitioner in a sports performance environment. The elective options of the programme provide the opportunity for students to develop further specialist skills; ranging from Injury Rehabilitation and Reconditioning and High Performance Testing, to the emerging fields of Strength and Conditioning for paediatric and geriatric population groups. Big data is poised to change the way enterprises function and a society operates, and is changing the way science and engineering is conducted. The MSc program in Big Data Technology jointly offered by the Departments of Computer Science and Engineering and Mathematics integrates different disciplines together to allow students to know all the important aspects of the big data and how it is used in the real world.

Programe Objectives

The program is aimed at educating students about big data and issues related to big data. The students are expected to be familiar with the workflow of big data systems and social and societal implications of big data systems.

The program helps to integrate different disciplines together and students in this program will learn the major components of big data:
-Big data infrastructure
-Big data integration
-Big data storage
-Big data modeling and management
-Big data computing systems
-Big data analytic and mining systems
-Big data security, policy and social implications, as well as human factors
-Big data applications in various fields (data science)

Curriculum

Students must complete 30 credits of coursework, with 12 credits of core courses and 18 credits of elective courses. Students shall take ten 3-credit taught courses or eight to nine 3-credit taught courses plus independent project(s) offered from the program. Each course listed below carries 3 credits. Subject to the approval from the program director, students may take a maximum of 6 credits of CSIT courses offered by the MSc in Information Technology program as partial fulfillment to meet the graduation requirement of the program.
