The MSc Sports Marketing and Business Management programme offers you the opportunity to study core sport management disciplines of finance, enterprise, global sports business and strategy, while specialising in the area of sports marketing. The course is suitable both for professionals working within the sports industry and those with an appropriate undergraduate qualification who aspire to work in management and marketing roles within this sector. There is a dual focus on the marketing of sport and marketing through sport, with sports marketing being examined from the perspective of both rights holders (sports organisations) and sponsors. As the sports industry grows in size and complexity, there is increasing demand for qualified sports marketers and managers. Through a series of taught modules, a consultancy project and a dissertation, the course equips you with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills and understanding necessary to undertake a managerial career in the dynamic global sports market.

We regularly invite in guest speakers from industry to speak to students within the modules on this course. For example, we have had guest lectures given by representatives of Wigan Warriors Rugby League Club, Bolton Wanderers Football Club, St Helens Rugby League Club, David Lloyd Leisure and Preston City Council. Students have also visited the UK headquarters of Adidas, where they were given a lecture on the company’s marketing activities.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT

The teaching and learning environment will be interactive and challenging. It is organised to ensure that key concepts, theories and, where appropriate, practices relevant to marketing and management in the sports industry form a central role into your learning. Throughout the programme you will engage in a range of learning activities including lectures, seminars, debates, case studies, presentations, online activities, directed readings and group work.

Guest speakers from academia and/or the sports industry regularly contribute to modules, offering you additional practical and theoretical insight. The use of guest speakers on the course is designed to facilitate networking opportunities for students to meet with potential employers. The staff on the programme are friendly and supportive and they also have a considerable experience both within higher education and working in the sports industry.

Assessment on each of the modules is designed to maximise your learning in relation to both subject-specific knowledge and understanding and wider skills, including communication, problem solving and teamwork. FURTHER INFORMATION

Sport is now a multi-billion dollar global industry and the content of the taught modules is reflective of the global context in which sports organisations operate, with use made of a range of international case studies. The module 'The Sports Industry' explicitly examines the global business context of sport, while Principles and Practice of Sports Marketing incorporates international sports marketing as a key theme. Students will be given flexibility in assessments to draw on international materials, such as case studies of global and/or non-UK sports brands. Depending on the availability of suitable partners, students may be able to work on live international sports marketing consultancy projects, with either UK or non-UK-based organisations.

An integral part of the course is the Consultancy Project, which is an opportunity for students to work on a “live” sports marketing and business management project for an external client, agreed using a project specification negotiated between the student, client and academic supervisor. These areas complement a strong foundation of core courses that equip graduates with the skills and training necessary to maintain an advantage in the highly competitive sports job market and, once hired, add immediate value to sports industry employers. Beyond establishing a strong business foundation, the curriculum and faculty will challenge you to deepen your understanding in three key areas:

Program Structure

The program requires 36 points for degree completion, or 12 3-point courses. For required courses, you will take four core courses that provide an overview of sports business concepts and practices and how they are applied in real-world contexts. In addition, you will choose one required course from each of three categories: Sports Marketing, Sports Analytics, and Sports Projects. For your remaining five courses, you may customize your focus by choosing electives in a variety of disciplines or choose courses from among three elective groupings, or areas of focus:

The MSc Sports Business Management is designed to enable students to make a significant contribution to the dynamic and complex global sports industry. The course will develop and enhance students’ business management knowledge and skills in areas such as marketing, HRM, finance and enterprise, strategy and economics. It is completely taught within the sport context by staff with sport management and consultancy experience. Graduates of the programme have gone on to work for a range of UK and international sports organisations including: leisure trusts, local authorities, consultancies, commercial sport providers, sports governing bodies and professional sports clubs. Columbia University, a world-class Ivy League institution, and Instituto Superior de Derecho y Economía (ISDE), a Madrid-based leader in legal education, offer a companion degree program for individuals with a law background who are interested in a career in international sports.

Intensive study for the two professional degrees — Columbia’s Master of Science (M.S.) in Sports Management and ISDE’s Master in Global Sports Law — is completed on Columbia’s campus in New York City, the sports capital of North America, for 10 months during the fall, spring, and summer terms. The MA Sports Ethics and Integrity will equip students for high-level careers in sports administration and governance, with a focus on ethical sports, integrity and compliance. The MSc in Sports Performance is an innovative course designed to meet the needs of students who are interested in maximising sports performance. The course is designed to provide the necessary theoretical and practical skills for those who wish to work within the sport and exercise industry as a Strength and Conditioning Coach, applied sport scientist or a technical coach. It will allow you to be capable of training, test and coach performers to maximise their physical potential to help improve their sporting ability.

Career Management Skills

This Masters degree aims to provide an understanding of real life applications of theory. You will encounter a range of examples of the application of enhancing athletic performance relevant to a future career in the sport and exercise industry or in a profession where such knowledge and skills acquired during the degree would be useful. Throughout the course you will have lectures and workshops given by the Centre for Personal and Career Development.

An initial session on career options is offered by the team from the Centre for Personal and Career Development through your induction process. You will be encouraged to ask appropriate questions and increase the use of feedback that you receive. We also encourage critical thinking, coinciding with the transition to less tutor-led and greater peer- and self-feedback, and `management of tutor. Professional competencies are embedded throughout this course. Experiential learning will be promoted through case study and practical assessments of your competency, while work experience and placement opportunities are available both extra to the course and as part of formal learning in a Work Experience unit. The UKSCA is recognised as the lead organisation within Strength & Conditioning in the UK, while BASES is recognised as the lead organisation for sports scientists; there competencies are embedded within this course and will allow you to gain an understanding of and practice the UKSCA accreditation process. Our Sports Physiotherapy teaching team have a wealth of professional experience, which has enabled them to develop a high level of expertise and work with an impressive range of clients. Our tutors have worked in the EIS, NHS and private practice in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, USA and the UK and at a wide range of events for different sporting disciplines. Examples include the Beijing Olympics, Commonwealth games, Paralympic World Cup and World University Games.

Methods of assessment

Each unit is individually assessed and may involve a mixture of written assignments, case studies, presentations and reflective discussion reports. Sports Physiotherapy in Practice 1 and 2 involve assessment of a portfolio of evidence relating to practice. There is a clinical exam during Phase 2, which takes place during the residential event at the University.

The MSc requires successful completion of an innovative research project and dissertation, including dissemination of findings to a target audience.

- Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL):
If you have studied for postgraduate units from another institution then you may be eligible to transfer credit for this prior learning (this is only the case if you have not already received an award for this prior learning).

Depending on the programme of study, you can gain APL for up to 50% of the total credits required (this credit must have been obtained within the previous five years).

About the department

The School for Health was established within the University of Bath in 2003, to centralise the high profile research and teaching in the health-related disciplines already taking place throughout the university, so creating a single entity through which links with the health sector at national and international level can be channelled, co-ordinated and developed.

In 2010 the School joined the Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences and became the Department for Health, providing excellent opportunities for academic teaching and research collaborations with other departments, such as Psychology and Social & Policy Sciences. This project aims to enable students to demonstrate the skills necessary to produce a scholarly, in-depth, empirical research study, resource, or report.

- Research Methods
This module will develop your ability to design and statistically analyse experimental, quasi-experimental and non-experimental quantitative studies. It will allow you to appreciate the strengths and limitations of the different quantitative and qualitative research designs used in coaching and sport, health and exercise science; and synthesize knowledge and competencies gained during taught modules to produce a scholarly, in-depth critical review and proposal for a research study.

- Effective Coaching
You will develop an advanced understanding of critical self-reflective skills through the use of video analysis, which includes identifying key coaching styles, behaviours and feedback techniques required in advanced coaching situations. In addition, you will develop an in depth understanding of the interdisciplinary approaches that contribute to the coaching process including your ability to recognise and develop current coaching practice and coaching philosophies.

- Professional Work Based Development
This modules provides an opportunity for students to observe and participate in work-based professional environments, including identifying a work problem for you to overcome, which will enhance your professional and vocational learning and inform your own everyday practice. As part of your studies you will critically reflect on your learning throughout the work placement. You will, together with the module team, identify an organisation or organisations that are relevant to your field of study and that will be able to provide 140 hours of work experience.

- Developing Expertise in Sport
This module aims to enable you to develop a systematic knowledge and critical understanding of how coaches develop and maintain expertise in sport and the ability to critically appraise coaching practice in the context of current approaches to skill development

- High Performance Environment
This module focuses on developing a multi-disciplinary perspective of factors that act upon the elite athlete and how these contribute to the development of elite performance. You will analyse how the coach, psychologist, conditioning coach, medical staff and nutritionist assist and complement each other in producing a high performance environment. The management of the performance environment will be discussed and the many issues that underpin successful implementation of elite sport science support will also be analysed.

- Strength and Conditioning
At the end of this module you will have developed your knowledge and critical understanding of concepts and theories regarding strength and conditioning. You will also have developed the ability to implement effective strength and conditioning programmes into a range of performance environments. The above have been closely linked to the professional standards required for accreditation by both the NSCA and the UKSCA.

- Movement Analysis
This module aims to develop your awareness of the analysis of sports performance, with particular emphasis on technique analysis and notation analysis. The use of systematic observation techniques in the analysis of sports performance will also be considered.

Learning and teaching methods

Teaching methods include lectures, video analysis, seminars and workshops, some of which will be student-led. Learning and teaching

Attendance is compulsory and will be approximately one and a half days a month (you will not be expected to be in every week). Recorded lectures of shared modules with other courses will be available to be viewed online, along with specified eLearning material.

Seminars will be recorded, where appropriate. Some practical sessions, group tutorials and specific teaching sessions will be compulsory.

Placements at appropriate professional clubs and NHS clinics will be organised, with some flexibility to negotiate clinic dates and times, and contacts will be provided for self-organised additional experience opportunities. Compared to an undergraduate course, you will find that this Masters requires a higher level of commitment and independent working. The course aims to stretch your creativity and maximise your sense of personal fulfilment.

In Stage 1 and Stage 2, you will have approx 22/23hrs teaching per week. This is arranged so that you have Friday off each week. We encourage you to publish your work. The department has strong relationships with local and national media including Johnston Press, NCJ Media and Room 501 Publishing.

The facilities at the David Puttnam Media Centre help you gain skills in areas such as writing, page design, online research, managing production, IT, and time management and presentation skills.

The mediaHUB
Throughout your time in Sunderland you will have an outlet for your creative talents in the mediaHUB, a bustling multimedia newsroom on the top floor of our David Puttnam Media Centre that will give you a real taste of life as a working journalist. The mediaHUB runs websites covering sport, news, entertainments and fashion, provides the content for news bulletins on our award-winning Spark Radio and is responsible for writing and editing Spark magazine.

Journalism/PR suites
We have four journalism suites, each with 18 Apple Mac workstations with design applications and video editing. There’s an additional open access project completion suite with 20 more workstations and colour laser printing.

Broadcast Journalism Newsroom
The Broadcast Journalism Newsroom has 20 workstations plus a Sky feed with two 40” plasma screens. Each workstation has industry-standard software including Newscutter, Burli and ENPS.

Technical support
The Journalism Newsroom has another 20 Mac workstations and offers drop-in sessions run by a rota of working journalists who can advise on projects, assignments and your personal portfolio. These sessions are available every day of the week during term time. In addition, technicians are available to help you use all the software and equipment.

Radio studios
We have six radio studios including a transmission suite for 107 Spark FM, our student-run community radio station and a city centre hub.

TV studios
We have two broadcast-quality TV studios complete with green room and changing facilities. Equipment includes four Steadicam rigs plus dolly, track and mini crane. We have over 40 full HD tapeless field camera systems.

Other media facilities
We have a live Sky feed and off-air recording facility, including DVD and Blu-ray recording, plus extensive footage archive/library. There is also a 203-seat cinema with full HD projection, 7.1 surround sound facility and the capability to play 3D feature films.

University Library Services
We’ve got a wide range of books, journals and e-books on relevant topics, with many more available through the inter-library loan service. Some useful resources for your studies include:
-Lexis, which provides full-text newspaper articles as well as access to legal information
-JSTOR (short for ‘Journal Storage’), which provides access to important journals across the humanities, social sciences and sciences
-Archival Sound Recordings with over 12,000 hours of recordings
-British Universities Film and Video Council (BUFVC), which provides resources for the production, study and use of film and related media in higher education and research

Employment & careers

On completing this course, you will be equipped for employment at an advanced level, with opportunities throughout the sports journalism industry. Potential roles include various positions across the communications, media, marketing and sports industries.

The course’s accreditation by the National Council for Training of Journalists (NCTJ) will boost your employability within journalism. You can choose, at an additional cost, to gain the NCTJ’s Diploma in Journalism.

Recent Sunderland graduates are now working with organisations such as Sky Tyne and Wear and Durham County Cricket Club.

During the course we encourage you to gain industry experience which will enhance your skills, build up a valuable network of contacts and boost your employability. The Department has close links with regional organisations including North East Press and NCJ Media. The North East is famous for its sport and you will have opportunities for match visits, press conferences and interviews at local clubs including Sunderland AFC, Newcastle United, Newcastle Falcons and Durham CCC.

The MA Sports Coaching degree is the new programme developed to support the strategic objectives outlined in the UK Coaching Framework. Sports Coach UK have provided the strategy for the UK to be considered the number one coaching system in the World by 2016. Our challenge is to support this and produce postgraduates with a high degree of knowledge and understanding so that they can challenge and innovate their own coaching practice. This will require knowledge of leadership, communication, pedagogy, allied sport sciences and relevant management principles. Students will be afforded the opportunity to work in an environment relevant to their developmental needs.

INDUSTRY LINKS

The School of Sport, Tourism and The Outdoors has strong links with a large number of sports organisations, including professional sports teams, public and private sector sports providers and grassroots sports clubs. We regularly invite guest speakers from industry to speak to students within the modules on this course.

This represents a valuable opportunity for students to meet potential employers and learn about life in the sports industry. For example, we have had guest lectures given by representatives of Wigan Warriors Rugby League Club, Bolton Wanderers Football Club, Blackburn Rovers Football Club, Lancashire Football Association, The Rugby Football League and Preston City Council.

The MA Sports coaching also benefits from a number of unique opportunities within the school. Within the school there are strong links with The Institute of Coaching and Performance (ICaP) which is Chaired and Directed by David Collins. The school is also responsible the delivery for the PGDip in Elite Coaching (UKCC Level 4 Coach Education: Pentium Group). As both ICAP and PGDip are central to the school there are a number of opportunities to share current research and practice from within the elite coaching environment.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT

All face-to-face delivery will use several types of media to encourage learning. The main vehicles will be through seminars, debates, practical workshops and problem-based learning. This will be supported with some electronic learning activities and resources. Those who choose the blended mode of delivery will be taught through a combination of interactive electronic learning activities and face-to-face delivery on residential blocks (for example weekends).

The use of guest speakers on the course is designed to facilitate networking opportunities for students to meet with potential employers.

Every effort will be made to apply theory to practice, and in some cases, practice to theory. There will be a requirement for independent learning throughout the programme, culminating in the Dissertation.

There are no examinations on this course. Every effort has been made to ensure that assessments are relevant to the coaching sector. For example, coach reports, case study reports, debates, critical reflections and presentations are used throughout the programme.

FURTHER INFORMATION

The full-time MA in Sports Coaching course is a 12 month programme comprising three parts. The first two parts are the taught element and the final part is the research element. The taught element focuses on key aspects of sports coaching. In addition, students will have the opportunity to engage in consultancy or sport-specific placement. For full-time students, the taught element is normally completed over a nine month period starting in October. Part-time students will normally attend on a one day per week basis and complete the taught element in two years. Students who complete the taught element of the programme, in part or in its entirety, may graduate with either a Postgraduate Certificate or Diploma in Sports Coaching.

Students wishing to complete the MA in Sports Coaching must complete the research element. The research element comprises a dissertation. Full-time students will normally complete this in the three months that follow the taught element, whilst part-time students complete this during the course of an academic session.

An integral part of the course is the Consultancy Project, which is an opportunity for students to work on a “live” sports coaching / coaching science project for an external client, agreed using a project specification negotiated between the student, client and academic supervisor.

It is aimed at law graduates, law practitioners, sports administrators and sports agents. You learn the important elements of assistance, advice and representation in sporting relationships and you gain an expertise in unlocking and resolving sporting disputes, as well as understanding the regulation of sporting activities and relationships.

The programme offers 3 unique pathways of • anti-doping law • football law • international sports marketing and sponsorship. You gain an insight into the practice and procedure of sports law with an emphasis on the practical elements of unlocking complex sporting disputes.

Experts guide you through the practice and procedure of the highest and most important sports law forums, such as the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), FIFA’s Dispute Resolution Chamber (DRC), UK Anti-Doping and many others.

Emphasis is given to case studies, with a continuous analysis of the practical aspects of sports law. You analyse important current cases with your tutors and you are offered the opportunity to work with them in real-life sporting scenarios. Examples include anti-doping litigation, football contracts with emphasis on employment and European competition law aspects, injuries on and off the field, intellectual property rights, sponsorship contracts negotiation and alternative dispute resolution.

You explore placement opportunities and you maximise your career development opportunities, through Sheffield Hallam's unique external links with experts and sporting organisations throughout the world. Continuing professional development opportunities are also available for practitioners.
