The Bond University Master of Sports Science is designed to develop specialist knowledge and skills relating to strength and conditioning and high performance science of elite athletes.

The program is suitable for graduates in exercise and sports science aspiring for a career in high performance sport, or for established professionals such as domestic and international strength and conditioning coaches, or high performance managers seeking professional updates.

This unique program places a strong emphasis on comprehensive practical experience and industry immersion, including a two semester full-time professional internship under the mentorship of a sports scientist.

Completed in only 1 year and 4 months (4 semesters), the first two semesters are comprised of specialist on-campus coursework, followed by the internship which incorporates applied sports science /strength and conditioning practice and a research component. This component is undertaken within a professional or semi-professional sporting organisation with whom Bond University has agreements for student internships. Alternatively, students may elect to undertake their internship with an external organisation or employer relative to their field of work, with prior approval from Bond University.  

The program will culminate with the submission of a peer-reviewed manuscript that may be eligible for publication, providing an additional pathway for you to progress to further postgraduate research.

The program provides you with exposure to authentic high performance sports science learning both on campus and in industry. The coursework component is delivered primarily at the world-class Bond Institute of Health & Sport, where you will gain exceptional, high-quality practical experience in our high performance gym, health science laboratories and sports science research laboratories. You will have access to specialised technology used in research to deliver a wide range of athlete testing and performance analysis. These facilities provide sports science testing and training services to a variety of elite and sub-elite athletes, providing an exceptional learning experience.

During coursework, you will be primarily located at the Bond Institute of Health and Sport, within the Cbus Stadium sporting precinct at Robina.

Internship and research

A unique feature of this program is the completion of an integrated professional placement and internship, under the mentorship of a sports scientist. This internship is completed full-time for 2 semesters, at a minimum of 500 hours with an elite sport organisation.

Bond University has affiliations with national and international elite sporting organisations and professional sports teams.

Research

Sport and exercise science research occurs within the world-leading Applied Sports Technology Exercise Medicine (A-STEM) Research Centre.

Significant research in diabetes and health as well as sedentary behaviour, physical activity, fitness, fundamental movement skills in childhood obesity is undertaken by a number of clinical exercise science staff.

Our elite sport performance group is leading a project supported by the European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Government to position Wales at the forefront of Science, Technology and Medicine in elite sport and to promote its wider application in health and education. This project represents a unique collaboration of leading Welsh academics, businesses and sport, with the overall objective of enhancing their respective performances.

Fundamental links integrating engineering and sport and exercise science research are being developed by the Sports Visualisation Group who analyse video material to rapidly produce data for immediate analysis of sports performance. Recently the Engineering Behaviour Analytics in Sport and Exercise (E-BASE) research group was set up to investigate the use of advanced sensor and processing technology to quantify training and activity in sport and clinical populations respectively.

We have international research links and projects with universities in Southern and Eastern Europe, Scandinavia, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, USE, Italy and Austria.

Overview

This programme advances your specialist knowledge and understanding of the scientific principles underpinning optimal performance in sport and exercise and provides opportunities to develop professional skills, including monitoring, analysing, evaluating and prescribing interventions for the optimisation of performance. Drawing on the expertise of Kent’s staff, many of whom are at the forefront of their fields, you have the opportunity to apply these skills in a real-world context by working with athletes.

Our areas of research are wide ranging, including sports training, performance, fatigue, nutrition, hamstring injuries, sport psychology, cardiac rehabilitation.

First-class sports facilities and State-of-the-art equipment

The School of Sport and Exercise Sciences has excellent purpose-built facilities. For exercise testing, the School has everything you would expect and more, including state-of-the-art treadmills, cycle and rowing ergometers, an isokinetic dynamometer, brain and muscle stimulators, and blood testing and gas analysis equipment, sport and exercise science laboratories, teaching and student clinics, multiple physiology laboratories, a biomechanics laboratory which is equipped with 3D motion capture cameras and force plates, two large therapy clinics and two rehabilitation gyms, a psychobiology laboratory and a respiratory clinic. We were the first university in the UK to install an anti-gravity treadmill in our rehabilitation gym. Using NASA technology, this treadmill is a valuable resource for professional athletes as they look to speed up their return to fitness. Within our neuromuscular laboratory, we have equipment for transcranial magnetic and direct current stimulation and peripheral muscle and nerve stimulation. These devices allow us to manipulate and test areas of the muscle and brain before and during exercise. Only a handful of universities in the UK have access to such state-of-the-art equipment.

We have a heat and altitude environmental chamber that can create various environmental conditions to stimulate the most extreme conditions found around the world. 

The facilities at Medway Park were specified to the highest standards in order to support athletes at pre-Olympic training camps and to enable world-leading research.

Excellent study resources

The general resources on campus are first class. The well-stocked Drill Hall Library has:

The course will involve online lectures, seminars and tutorials and during a residential week at the end of year 1 you will take part in lab classes. You will also take part in journal clubs, presentations and self-directed learning. The programme is made up of 60 compulsary credits and 3 x 20 credit options (X,Y and Z) plus a research project (60 credits).

A number of our graduates are employed in senior sports science positions with national sporting bodies and professional sports clubs. The School of Sport and Exercise Sciences is one of the most exciting and innovative sports schools in the UK.

The School is based on the University’s award-winning Medway campus and has well-equipped, state-of the-art sports science laboratories, sports therapy clinic, sports rehabilitation gymnasium and respiratory clinic.

The University of Kent has recently benefited from the development of Medway Park, an £11 million project to create a regional centre of sporting excellence that was an approved pre-Olympic training camp venue for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The School of Sport and Exercise Sciences has recently invested heavily in its equipment and other resources, and has world-class sports therapy and sport science facilities. Campus facilities include a 12-couch teaching clinic and state-of-the-art sports science laboratories. There is a wide range of equipment, including motorised and non-motorised treadmills, cycle ergometers, an isokinetic dynamometer, and blood and gas analysis equipment. In addition, at Medway Park, the School of Sport and Exercise Sciences has its own cutting-edge sports therapy clinic, rehabilitation gymnasium, sports science laboratories and a respiratory clinic.

There is also a hypoxic environmental chamber, and analytical chemistry, respiratory testing and psychobiology laboratories. These specialist rooms have been set up with over £700,000 of new equipment, including an anti-gravity treadmill, a 3D video analysis system, 2D force pedals, ultra-sound imaging, near-infrared spectroscopy and a gait analysis system.

The School operates a commercial sports injury and rehabilitation clinic, respiratory clinic and sports performance services from Medway Park to support elite athletes, regional squads and local residents. As a postgraduate student, you have the opportunity to develop your professional skills as you work with clients in the clinic and laboratory under staff supervision.

Staff publish regularly and widely in leading scientific journals. Among others, they have recently contributed to: Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise; American Journal of Sports Medicine; Journal of Applied Physiology; and British Journal of Sports Medicine.

What is the role of sport in a world facing pressing social challenges? How do we understand the opportunities and challenges of sport and sport sciences as a means for social change? How can we look critically at the development of sport in relation to social processes such as globalisation, migration and urbanisation? 

Sport Science: Sport in Society is a one-year master’s programme that tackles these questions and prepares students to work with sport and sustainable development. Throughout the programme, students develop applied skills and perspectives to work with sport, leisure and health industries as platforms for social change.

The programme is tailored for those who have undergraduate experience in sports science, physical education, health science and management. During the programme, you will be schooled in the latest theories and be given the opportunity to apply these theories and concepts to real-life projects through individual assignments and group projects. 

What makes this programme unique?

Located in the dynamic Öresund Region, the programme is linked to Malmö's urban environment and its position as a multicultural, innovative and sustainable city. Throughout the programme, both Scandinavian and international contexts are used as case studies, and the programme is carried out in close collaboration with industry partners and external organisations.

The programme strives to offer an international classroom environment and bring together students from different backgrounds and experiences. This allows students to deepen their knowledge and gain an overview based on the academic backgrounds and practical experience of other students, which will allow them to be able to work transcultural in their future professions. 

What career will I be prepared for?

After completing the programme, you will have significantly deepened your knowledge and understanding of sport in relation to society's change processes, and have the competence, knowledge and understanding required to work with sport in relation to sustainable development and social change.

The education is relevant for a wide range of jobs and roles where sport is used in the context of change, ranging from working with elite athletes to sporting federations or public health sectors. 

Content

The programme aims for the student to develop applied skills and a critical knowledge base in order to work with sport, leisure and health industries as sites for social change. Emphasis is placed on an in-depth ability to use different theories and methods for understanding, analysing, changing and using sport towards a sustainable and equal society. 

The concept of sustainable society includes social, economic and environmental perspectives. Furthermore, the programme aims at providing local, regional, national and international perspectives on sports, sports science and a sustainable society. Urban and innovative local environments, with associated challenges and initiatives, are used as living case studies. The students also actively contribute with experiences from different countries and sports cultures. Based on these, the students problematize the Swedish and Scandinavian sports context. 

The student is given the opportunity to develop skills and in-depth knowledge suitable for a wide range of jobs, entrepreneurship, and research in fields where sports and health are used, for example, to meet or create changes and contribute to social development. The student works for this in close dialogue with stakeholders external to the university. 

In addition, the education prepares for research studies. The education is closely linked to the sports science research environment at Malmö University and its research areas, which are focused upon the social sciences. Emphasis is placed on highlighting and working with the multidisciplinary nature of sport science and the position and opportunities of those with a sport science education in society. 

Structure 

The programme consists of 60 higher education credits and contains compulsory courses. Teaching is based on scheduled tasks such as lectures and seminars as well as self-study. Some elements require on-campus attendance while others can be carried out remotely. In the programme, we work with a wide variety of educational forms and materials, using digital communication channels.
