The MSc in Sport Performance Analysis will help towards accreditation from International Society of Performance Analysis of Sport (ISPAS). The course is aligned to some of the key benchmarks for accreditation, and fulfils the initial requirements if the graduate would like to apply for accreditation.

Over the past few years, we have redeveloped both of our campuses so that you have the best facilities available as you study for your degree. The world-class Tudor Hale Centre for Sport is the focus of sporting activities, both academic and recreational, at the University. The Tudor Hale Centre for Sport incorporates a suite of state of the art sport science laboratories, a sports injury clinic, a strength and conditioning room and a fitness suite. In addition, there is a sports hall used for basketball, netball, trampolining, badminton, volleyball, cricket, soccer, table tennis, hockey and ultimate frisbee.  Located beside the Tudor Hale Centre for Sport you will find our brand new Sports Dome, incorporating four indoor tennis courts, our all-weather astro turf pitch, and grass rugby pitch.

We understand the importance of ensuring that you have the knowledge, skills and experience to compete successfully in today’s challenging jobs market.

We provide performance support for elite athletes and competitive teams. We consistently perform well against the elite of university sport. A high number of our performance teams compete in the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) programme at the elite level. Some of our graduates have gone on to secure jobs with England Netball, Southampton FC, AFC Bournemouth, Brighton FC, Bristol City FC, London Scottish RFC, Surrey County Cricket Club, amongst others.

Several teams are supported with high-level coaching, training facility support and sports science analysis. Numerous local and national sports clubs’ links with our student sports teams provide additional high-level playing opportunities.

Work placements

THE COURSE INCLUDES AN EXTENSIVE WORK PLACEMENT MODULE INVOLVING WORK RELATED LEARNING AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF SKILLS SPECIFIC TO THE WORLD OF COMMERCIAL SPORTS PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS. YOU WILL BE INVOLVED WITHIN AN ELITE, SEMI-PROFESSIONAL OR PROFESSIONAL SPORTS SETTING THROUGH ORGANISATIONS CONNECTED WITH THE UNIVERSITY, OR EVEN ONE OF YOUR CHOICE PROVIDING AN AGREEMENT IS ARRANGED. THROUGH THE DEPARTMENTS' CONSULTANCY WORK, THERE IS OPPORTUNITY TO WORK WITH A VARIETY OF CLUBS FROM VARIOUS SPORTS. THIS PLACEMENT HAS RANGED FROM A VARIETY OF SPORTS OVER THE YEARS INCLUDING FOOTBALL, RUGBY, CRICKET, BASKETBALL AND NETBALL.

The work placement module provides a platform for students to get involved in performance analysis in a real world situation, working closely with coaches, players, strength and conditioning coaches, physios and management support team. Students are expected to utilise this opportunity to practise skills learned in the university and use innovative ideas to provide the teams with advanced analysis services.

Teaching and assessment

To gain a Postgraduate Certificate in Sports Performance Analysis, students need to complete three modules. Each module is assessed by a 4,000-word assignment.

To gain a Postgraduate Diploma in Sports Performance Analysis, students need to complete six modules. Each module is assessed by a 4,000-word assignment.

To gain an MSc in Sports Performance Analysis, students need to complete six modules, and either a 12,000 word thesis or a 6,000 word journal article and an oral presentation.

We use a broad range of assessments, which are also novel and vocational to help enhance key employability skills i.e. job application, job interview, CPD portfolio, scout reports, and oral presentations, as well as scientific reports and independent research projects.

The online activities are supplemented by two blocks of one-week intensive teaching here at UW (currently delivered in September and January). The Bond University Master of Sports Science is designed to develop specialist knowledge and skills relating to strength and conditioning and high performance science of elite athletes.

The program is suitable for graduates in exercise and sports science aspiring for a career in high performance sport, or for established professionals such as domestic and international strength and conditioning coaches, or high performance managers seeking professional updates.

This unique program places a strong emphasis on comprehensive practical experience and industry immersion, including a two semester full-time professional internship under the mentorship of a sports scientist.

Completed in only 1 year and 4 months (4 semesters), the first two semesters are comprised of specialist on-campus coursework, followed by the internship which incorporates applied sports science /strength and conditioning practice and a research component. This component is undertaken within a professional or semi-professional sporting organisation with whom Bond University has agreements for student internships. Alternatively, students may elect to undertake their internship with an external organisation or employer relative to their field of work, with prior approval from Bond University.  

The program will culminate with the submission of a peer-reviewed manuscript that may be eligible for publication, providing an additional pathway for you to progress to further postgraduate research.

The program provides you with exposure to authentic high performance sports science learning both on campus and in industry. The coursework component is delivered primarily at the world-class Bond Institute of Health & Sport, where you will gain exceptional, high-quality practical experience in our high performance gym, health science laboratories and sports science research laboratories. Teaching methodology

The Master of Sports Science program uses a teaching methodology that involves a combination of lectures, tutorials, seminars, examinations, projects, presentations, assignments, computer labs and industry projects. Examination formats may include objective structure practical examinations, theory papers, assignments and oral presentations. During coursework, you will be primarily located at the Bond Institute of Health and Sport, within the Cbus Stadium sporting precinct at Robina.

Internship and research

A unique feature of this program is the completion of an integrated professional placement and internship, under the mentorship of a sports scientist. This internship is completed full-time for 2 semesters, at a minimum of 500 hours with an elite sport organisation.

Bond University has affiliations with national and international elite sporting organisations and professional sports teams.

- Research Project
This project aims to enable students to demonstrate the skills necessary to produce a scholarly, in-depth, empirical research study, resource, or report.

- Research Methods
This module will develop your ability to design and statistically analyse experimental, quasi-experimental and non-experimental quantitative studies. It will allow you to appreciate the strengths and limitations of the different quantitative and qualitative research designs used in coaching and sport, health and exercise science; and synthesize knowledge and competencies gained during taught modules to produce a scholarly, in-depth critical review and proposal for a research study.

- Effective Coaching
You will develop an advanced understanding of critical self-reflective skills through the use of video analysis, which includes identifying key coaching styles, behaviours and feedback techniques required in advanced coaching situations. In addition, you will develop an in depth understanding of the interdisciplinary approaches that contribute to the coaching process including your ability to recognise and develop current coaching practice and coaching philosophies.

- Professional Work Based Development
This modules provides an opportunity for students to observe and participate in work-based professional environments, including identifying a work problem for you to overcome, which will enhance your professional and vocational learning and inform your own everyday practice. As part of your studies you will critically reflect on your learning throughout the work placement. You will, together with the module team, identify an organisation or organisations that are relevant to your field of study and that will be able to provide 140 hours of work experience.

Option Modules (choose three):
- Developing Expertise in Sport
This module aims to enable you to develop a systematic knowledge and critical understanding of how coaches develop and maintain expertise in sport and the ability to critically appraise coaching practice in the context of current approaches to skill development

- High Performance Environment
This module focuses on developing a multi-disciplinary perspective of factors that act upon the elite athlete and how these contribute to the development of elite performance. You will analyse how the coach, psychologist, conditioning coach, medical staff and nutritionist assist and complement each other in producing a high performance environment. The management of the performance environment will be discussed and the many issues that underpin successful implementation of elite sport science support will also be analysed.

- Strength and Conditioning
At the end of this module you will have developed your knowledge and critical understanding of concepts and theories regarding strength and conditioning. You will also have developed the ability to implement effective strength and conditioning programmes into a range of performance environments. The above have been closely linked to the professional standards required for accreditation by both the NSCA and the UKSCA.

- Movement Analysis
This module aims to develop your awareness of the analysis of sports performance, with particular emphasis on technique analysis and notation analysis. The use of systematic observation techniques in the analysis of sports performance will also be considered.

Learning and teaching methods

Teaching methods include lectures, video analysis, seminars and workshops, some of which will be student-led. The UK Vision for Coaching has clearly identified the need to develop Talent Coaches, Performance Coaches and High Performance Coaches. This course will provide opportunities for individuals to develop in these roles within their National Governing Body or sport.

COURSE SUMMARY

Throughout this course you will study the discipline of Performance Analysis in Sport and gain an understanding of how this vastly growing sector interacts with a multitude of Sports Science disciplines.

As a student on this programme you will have access to industry standard Performance Analysis equipment and you will learn how this exciting discipline is used across sports to enhance performance (Performance Analysis Module). You will generate an understanding of how Performance Analysis can be utilised in relation to sports injuries and how this can be measured (Injury Prevention and Performance Measurement Module).

You will also have the opportunity to conduct some primary research that could lead to publications, which may inform future Performance Analysis practice (Research Project Module).

COURSE DETAILS

This is the only Performance Analysis master's degree in the North West of England. The online theoretical content will provide the basis for the ‘on campus’ sessions, in order to put your learning into practice and provide some context to the theories.

COURSE STRUCTURE

The MSc course is offered on both a full-time and part-time basis.

The full-time course runs over three academic semesters (October through to September the following year), whilst  giving you the chance to exit with the following awards:

  • Postgraduate Certificate: completion of one module
  • Postgraduate Diploma: completion of two modules
  • Masters: completion of two modules plus a dissertation

In order to achieve an award of MSc Performance Analysis in Sport you must successfully complete the modules Performance Analysis and Injury Prevention and Performance Measurement, along with producing a thesis for the dissertation module.

TEACHING

This course is available both part-time and full-time and is delivered via a blended learning approach, which includes:  

  • Workshops (three days per module, per semester). These are interactive, discursive, reflective, participatory, collaborative and practice related sessions that employ a variety of teaching and learning methods. As the course progresses these will become progressively more student led, with you presenting case studies for peer and tutor review.  
  • Individual scholarly activity.
  • Self directed learning, personal reflection, practice based application and reflection, including peer and tutor review.  
  • Distance learning resources.
  • Delivery of supporting resources such as study guides and lecture material online. 
  • Facilitated group work, including tutor and peer evaluation are a key component of this course. 
  • Personal tutor and peer support, to provide an academic, practice based and personal support mechanism alongside facilitated networking.

As well as increasing your theoretical and empirical knowledge within the area, our course comprises core modules that are designed to provide opportunities to enhance your abilities in a range of transferable skills, and also to develop the basic competencies that will aid your personal development should you wish to pursue accreditation in the future, for example with BASES, UKSCA or ISPAS.

The course is taught by an experienced team of tutors who have specialist research interests and publications within the subdiscipline pathways. All teaching has an applied focus, with full use made of the BASES-accredited sports science laboratories.

The above critical elements of teaching excellence and research, combined with the applied practical experience of many of the staff who have worked with national and international athletes and teams, means that during all lectures you will not only be challenged intellectually but will also gain experience and knowledge of how research informs and is informed by practice.

The requirement for an experiential learning placement within the course means that our course provides invaluable practical experience that provides you with the opportunity to apply your knowledge within an applied sporting environment, as well as developing key interpersonal skills while working alongside applied practitioners.

This course is suitable for: (i) students who wish to embark upon a career in the sports sciences domain and who are seeking postgraduate study with the opportunity of supervised experience; (ii) practitioners already working in the field (coaches, trainers, analysts and physiotherapists); (iii) those looking to extend their knowledge before moving into the research and academic sectors.

What will I learn?

Over the year, full-time students will take six taught modules, including: Research Methods; two sports science generic modules designed to examine practitioner skills (The Applied Sports Scientist Core Competencies) and allow you to gain field-based experience of working in an applied setting (Experiential Learning in Applied Sporting Performance); and the pathway-specific module of Performance Analysis of Sport. You will also complete one triple-module Research Project.

How will I be taught?

The course is located on the Parkgate Road Campus across a range of lecture rooms and dedicated sports science and computer laboratories.

You will learn and be taught by means of: lectures, seminars, group work and laboratory practical sessions.
The number of contact hours for full-time students is typically six to seven hours per week, plus ad-hoc tutorials. The total study time expected for each module is 200 hours.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment of modules is varied, and comprises a combination of coursework, research reports and presentations. There are no exams.

The advent of this course is in response to the marked growth in career opportunities available to sports coaching scientists across a range of sporting clubs and organisations. This is exemplified by the large number of job vacancies advertised on websites such as SportsCoachUK, UK Sport, BASES, County Sports Partnerships and LinkedIn.

**Candidates must hold at least a Level Two Governing Body of Sport coaching award; having currently (within the last 3 years) attended a Safeguarding and Protecting Children workshop and hold current coaching insurance and a current DBS check.

We provide performance support for elite athletes and competitive teams. We consistently perform well against the elite of university sport. A high number of our performance teams compete in the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) programme at the elite level.

Several teams are supported with high-level coaching, training facility support and sports science analysis. Numerous local and national sports clubs’ links with our student sports teams provide additional high-level playing opportunities.

Research

Sport and exercise science research occurs within the world-leading Applied Sports Technology Exercise Medicine (A-STEM) Research Centre.

Significant research in diabetes and health as well as sedentary behaviour, physical activity, fitness, fundamental movement skills in childhood obesity is undertaken by a number of clinical exercise science staff.

Our elite sport performance group is leading a project supported by the European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Government to position Wales at the forefront of Science, Technology and Medicine in elite sport and to promote its wider application in health and education. This project represents a unique collaboration of leading Welsh academics, businesses and sport, with the overall objective of enhancing their respective performances.

Fundamental links integrating engineering and sport and exercise science research are being developed by the Sports Visualisation Group who analyse video material to rapidly produce data for immediate analysis of sports performance. Recently the Engineering Behaviour Analytics in Sport and Exercise (E-BASE) research group was set up to investigate the use of advanced sensor and processing technology to quantify training and activity in sport and clinical populations respectively.

We have international research links and projects with universities in Southern and Eastern Europe, Scandinavia, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, USE, Italy and Austria.

The Human Performance Laboratory (HPL) at QMUL combines the expertise of sports medicine clinicians, surgeons, engineers and sports scientists with state-of-the-art physiological testing and motion analysis equipment. This collaborative venture offers clinical, educational, research and athlete support service applications in the laboratory or field based settings.

The capabilities of the HPL can be broadly divided into two areas: musculoskeletal biomechanics and physiological testing.

Musculoskeletal biomechanics

The HPL carries 4 Codamotion Cx1 infra-red scanning units that are used extensively for 3-dimensional motion analysis. This system is fully integrated with 2 ground embedded Kistler force plates and a 16 channel wireless EMG system. The integration of these systems allows for full analysis of movement, forces associated with movement and measuring muscular effort during movement. In addition, the HPL also boasts a 64 channel EMG system for multichannel work and an isokinetic dynamometer, which can be used for both research and rehabilitation.

Physiological testing

Detailed analysis of pulmonary gas exchange can be made using an online gas analysis system, in addition to cardiac monitoring using a 12-lead ECG system, during exercise on a treadmill or the electromagnetically braked cycle ergometer. Measures can also be made out in the field, from simple tests of flexibility, strength, speed, power and cardiorespiratory fitness, to comprehensive measurement of expired air using the portable on-line gas analysis system.

On this unit you will critically analyse coaching methods and how skill is acquired, building your understanding and use of technology for developing, monitoring and testing athletic performance.

Psycho-Social Development in Sport 

The aim of this unit is to analyse the theories underpinning talent identification and long-term athlete development, and to examine the psycho-social factors affecting performance throughout an athlete’s career.

Physical Preparation in Sport and Exercise

This unit examines the science behind effective training, injury prevention and rehabilitation in a practical setting. You will focus on physical and mental loading, and on the key fitness components of strength, speed, endurance and flexibility.

Tactical Development in Sport 

This unit focuses on performance analysis techniques, providing practical opportunities to collect, assimilate and analyse tactical, technical and time motion information, with the aim of improving performance.

Marginal Gains for Peak Performance 

This unit identifies past, current and future methods of obtaining potential marginal advantage in performance, with a chance to build first-hand experience via off-site learning.

Individual Project 

The project provides an opportunity to undertake a sustained, intensive and independent investigation into a topic of your choosing, presenting your work in a peer-reviewed journal format.

The course's strong focus on research skills provides an ideal platform for further study at PhD level. It is also an important first step into employment and can open many other doors into further training.

Sport scientists

Sport scientists support athletes or sports clubs, they generally provide advice and support, designed to monitor and improve sport performance, alongside a team of specialists including coaches, psychologist, performance managers and medical staff. Areas of expertise include • strength and conditioning • physiology • nutrition and analysis of movement and tactical performance.

Exercise scientists

Exercise scientists are more concerned with improving a person's health and helping them recover from illness through a structured programme of physical activity and other health-based interventions. They are also involved with preventative treatments and work closely with GPs and primary care trusts or private healthcare organisations. Exercise scientists might be employed by local authorities to run community based health and exercise initiatives.

It may be possible to move into a particular clinical area, such as cardiology, or work as a health promotion specialist for a local authority or healthcare trust. Our close links with the National Centre for Sport and Exercise medicine, part of which is based in Sheffield, will provide additional opportunities to those wishing to pursue careers in this area.
