Our MSc Sports Performance analysis programme is designed for graduates seeking to develop specialist knowledge in Sports Performance Analysis. Within the past decade there has been a marked growth in the career opportunities available for sports performance analysts (e.g. professional sporting teams, nationally and internationally, World Class Support programmes, and teaching in Further and Higher Education). Coupled with this growth there has also been an increased need for appropriately qualified and accredited individuals to fill such positions.

The MSc in Sport Performance Analysis will help towards accreditation from International Society of Performance Analysis of Sport (ISPAS). The course is aligned to some of the key benchmarks for accreditation, and fulfils the initial requirements if the graduate would like to apply for accreditation.

The world-class Tudor Hale Centre for Sport is the focus of sporting activities, both academic and recreational, at the University. The Tudor Hale Centre for Sport incorporates a suite of state of the art sport science laboratories, a sports injury clinic, a strength and conditioning room and a fitness suite. We understand the importance of ensuring that you have the knowledge, skills and experience to compete successfully in today’s challenging jobs market.

We provide performance support for elite athletes and competitive teams. We consistently perform well against the elite of university sport. A high number of our performance teams compete in the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) programme at the elite level. Some of our graduates have gone on to secure jobs with England Netball, Southampton FC, AFC Bournemouth, Brighton FC, Bristol City FC, London Scottish RFC, Surrey County Cricket Club, amongst others.

Several teams are supported with high-level coaching, training facility support and sports science analysis. Numerous local and national sports clubs’ links with our student sports teams provide additional high-level playing opportunities.

Work placements
The course includes an extensive work placement module involving work related learning and the development of skills specific to the world of commercial sports performance analysis. You will be involved within an elite, semi-professional or professional sports setting through organisations connected with the University, or even one of your choice providing an agreement is arranged. Through the departments' consultancy work, there is opportunity to work with a variety of clubs from various sports. This placement has ranged from a variety of sports over the years including football, rugby, cricket, basketball and netball.

The work placement module provides a platform for students to get involved in performance analysis in a real world situation, working closely with coaches, players, strength and conditioning coaches, physios and management support team. Students are expected to utilise this opportunity to practise skills learned in the university and use innovative ideas to provide the teams with advanced analysis services.

To gain a Postgraduate Certificate in Sports Performance Analysis, students need to complete three modules. Each module is assessed by a 4,000-word assignment.

To gain a Postgraduate Diploma in Sports Performance Analysis, students need to complete six modules. Each module is assessed by a 4,000-word assignment.

To gain an MSc in Sports Performance Analysis, students need to complete six modules, and either a 12,000 word thesis or a 6,000 word journal article and an oral presentation.

We use a broad range of assessments, which are also novel and vocational to help enhance key employability skills i.e. job application, job interview, CPD portfolio, scout reports, and oral presentations, as well as scientific reports and independent research projects.

- Research Project
This project aims to enable students to demonstrate the skills necessary to produce a scholarly, in-depth, empirical research study, resource, or report.

- Research Methods
This module will develop your ability to design and statistically analyse experimental, quasi-experimental and non-experimental quantitative studies. It will allow you to appreciate the strengths and limitations of the different quantitative and qualitative research designs used in coaching and sport, health and exercise science; and synthesize knowledge and competencies gained during taught modules to produce a scholarly, in-depth critical review and proposal for a research study.

- Effective Coaching
You will develop an advanced understanding of critical self-reflective skills through the use of video analysis, which includes identifying key coaching styles, behaviours and feedback techniques required in advanced coaching situations. In addition, you will develop an in depth understanding of the interdisciplinary approaches that contribute to the coaching process including your ability to recognise and develop current coaching practice and coaching philosophies.

- Professional Work Based Development
This modules provides an opportunity for students to observe and participate in work-based professional environments, including identifying a work problem for you to overcome, which will enhance your professional and vocational learning and inform your own everyday practice. As part of your studies you will critically reflect on your learning throughout the work placement. You will, together with the module team, identify an organisation or organisations that are relevant to your field of study and that will be able to provide 140 hours of work experience.

- Developing Expertise in Sport
This module aims to enable you to develop a systematic knowledge and critical understanding of how coaches develop and maintain expertise in sport and the ability to critically appraise coaching practice in the context of current approaches to skill development

- High Performance Environment
This module focuses on developing a multi-disciplinary perspective of factors that act upon the elite athlete and how these contribute to the development of elite performance. You will analyse how the coach, psychologist, conditioning coach, medical staff and nutritionist assist and complement each other in producing a high performance environment. The management of the performance environment will be discussed and the many issues that underpin successful implementation of elite sport science support will also be analysed.

- Strength and Conditioning
At the end of this module you will have developed your knowledge and critical understanding of concepts and theories regarding strength and conditioning. You will also have developed the ability to implement effective strength and conditioning programmes into a range of performance environments. The above have been closely linked to the professional standards required for accreditation by both the NSCA and the UKSCA.

- Movement Analysis
This module aims to develop your awareness of the analysis of sports performance, with particular emphasis on technique analysis and notation analysis. The use of systematic observation techniques in the analysis of sports performance will also be considered.

Learning and teaching methods

Teaching methods include lectures, video analysis, seminars and workshops, some of which will be student-led. Lectures will be held predominately held on a Monday between 2pm-8pm and /or a Tuesday depending on your module choice. A draft timetable can be requested from the course leader Melanie Tuckwell

The UK Vision for Coaching has clearly identified the need to develop Talent Coaches, Performance Coaches and High Performance Coaches. This course will provide opportunities for individuals to develop in these roles within their National Governing Body or sport.

The MSc in Sports Performance is an innovative course designed to meet the needs of students who are interested in maximising sports performance. The course is designed to provide the necessary theoretical and practical skills for those who wish to work within the sport and exercise industry as a Strength and Conditioning Coach, applied sport scientist or a technical coach. This Masters degree aims to provide an understanding of real life applications of theory. An initial session on career options is offered by the team from the Centre for Personal and Career Development through your induction process. You will be encouraged to ask appropriate questions and increase the use of feedback that you receive. We also encourage critical thinking, coinciding with the transition to less tutor-led and greater peer- and self-feedback, and `management of tutor. Towards the end of your studies you will be encouraged to make use of the Careers drop-in Centre at the Polhill campus.

Professional competencies are embedded throughout this course. Experiential learning will be promoted through case study and practical assessments of your competency, while work experience and placement opportunities are available both extra to the course and as part of formal learning in a Work Experience unit. The UKSCA is recognised as the lead organisation within Strength & Conditioning in the UK, while BASES is recognised as the lead organisation for sports scientists; there competencies are embedded within this course and will allow you to gain an understanding of and practice the UKSCA accreditation process. The university has a unique Centre of Performance Analysis and leads the world in this field. This programme, the first postgraduate degree in Performance Analysis in the world, is designed to meet the growing demand for performance analysis. The programme prepares skilled and experienced analysts with sound scientific principles on which to base their work.

The programme offers students the opportunity to develop their understanding of the theory behind their analyses, to gain experience of elite performance and the coaching process and feedback to enable them to apply their knowledge and skills to a variety of contexts. This programme is unique in its combination of theoretical ideas, practical experience and exposure to the growing spectrum of commercial hardware and software. Opportunities for work experience are also offered and contribute towards the degree.

The course will provide students with a balance of academic and experiential (Practical Labs) studies, which are focused through ensuring a comprehensive analysis of the research process.

Learning & Teaching​

​The course is delivered in the purpose built Performance Analysis Laboratory. Where logistically possible most lectures are scheduled for a Monday, however depending on module selection this my not be possible.

All modules, with the exception of the independent research project (dissertation) module are 20 credit modules. Allocated teaching timetabled (contact time) delivery for such modules usually equals a minimum of 30 hours of time supplemented with up to 60 hours of directed study time and up to 60 hours of independent study time. Contact time is normally made up of lectures, seminars, and individual tutorials.

Modules are usually taught through a combination of lecture type and interactive seminar where group discussions and tasks are frequently used. Student learning is supported through the use of our Virtual Learning Environment, Moodle, which provides learning resources to complement the reading lists. All students are supported with access to a personal tutor, who is normally the Programme Director.​

Assessment

The assessment is a rich mixture of practical evidence of absorbing the content, embracing presentations, edited video, experimental essays, reports, and critical reviews.

Due to the demands of National Governing Bodies, satellite and terrestrial TV companies, soccer clubs, rugby clubs, Welsh Institute of Sport, the English Institutes (regional centres) of Sport there has been an increase in the range of career opportunities in the field of performance analysis. Over the year, full-time students will take six taught modules, including: Research Methods; two sports science generic modules designed to examine practitioner skills (The Applied Sports Scientist Core Competencies) and allow you to gain field-based experience of working in an applied setting (Experiential Learning in Applied Sporting Performance); and the pathway-specific module of Performance Analysis of Sport. You will also complete one triple-module Research Project.

How will I be taught?

The course is located on the Parkgate Road Campus across a range of lecture rooms and dedicated sports science and computer laboratories.

You will learn and be taught by means of: lectures, seminars, group work and laboratory practical sessions.
The number of contact hours for full-time students is typically six to seven hours per week, plus ad-hoc tutorials. The total study time expected for each module is 200 hours.

The programme -

Built on a successful and popular undergraduate programme, this high-level master’s degree helps to prepare students for a career in the sports industry by delivering hands-on professional skills and adopting an interdisciplinary approach to coaching.

During the course, students will explore key areas such as talent identification, long-term athlete development, performance analysis, strength and conditioning, peak performance, technical and tactical development, marginal gains, and injury prevention and management.

To complement their studies, students are expected to undertake work placements relevant to the course within professional sport and exercise organisations. Working at all levels, from elite athletes to schools or rehabilitation patients, students will gain valuable ‘real-world’ experience working alongside leading experts. Work placements are expected to have been organised prior to joining the course; if students have been unable to organise a placement, the University will support them in finding a suitable opportunity.

Students have full access to the University’s leading, fully-equipped sports science facilities, which boast a BASES-accredited physiology laboratory, as well as biomechanics, health and exercise, and psychology laboratories. Many of these facilities are regularly used by professional athletes, including players from Southampton FC.

Past students have benefitted from a guest speaker programme which has featured lectures from professionals from the highest level of a variety of sports, who have shared their advice, knowledge and experience of the industry.

The course team has strong industry links and the University is a partner of Southampton FC. The University also works with other top sports organisations, including Reed’s High Performance Academy, British Swimming, Hampshire Rugby, Crystal Palace FC, London Irish RFC and GB Wheelchair Rugby.

Course Content

Technical Development in Sport: On this unit you will critically analyse coaching methods and how skill is acquired, building your understanding and use of technology for developing, monitoring and testing athletic performance.

Psycho-Social Development in Sport: The aim of this unit is to analyse the theories underpinning talent identification and long-term athlete development, and to examine the psycho-social factors affecting performance throughout an athlete’s career.

Physical Preparation in Sport and Exercise: This unit examines the science behind effective training, injury prevention and rehabilitation in a practical setting. You will focus on physical and mental loading, and on the key fitness components of strength, speed, endurance and flexibility.

Tactical Development in Sport: This unit focuses on performance analysis techniques, providing practical opportunities to collect, assimilate and analyse tactical, technical and time motion information, with the aim of improving performance.

Marginal Gains for Peak Performance: This unit identifies past, current and future methods of obtaining potential marginal advantage in performance, with a chance to build first-hand experience via off-site learning.

Individual Project: The project provides an opportunity to undertake a sustained, intensive and independent investigation into a topic of your choosing, presenting your work in a peer-reviewed journal format.

Teaching, learning and assessment -

The course combines theory-led sessions with practical sessions, working individually and in groups in both the laboratory and the field. On all units you’ll work with real-life clients, in a placement either organised yourself or by members of the course team.

Work experience -

Prior to starting the course you’ll be expected to have a placement organised that will last throughout your studies; this can be in more than one organisation if required. The placement should be in a role relevant to the course, and might include (but not limited to) coach, sport scientist, performance analyst, strength and conditioning coach, exercise physiologist, biomechanist, laboratory technician, etc.

If you’ve been unable to organise a placement, the course team will support you in finding a placement, potentially with university partners Southampton FC or a range of other top sports organisations, including Reed’s High Performance Academy, British Swimming, Hampshire Rugby, Crystal Palace FC, London Irish RFC, GB Wheelchair Rugby and more.

Assessment -

Assessment will be a range of written coursework, viva, presentations, reports and practical tests.

Sport and exercise science research occurs within the world-leading Applied Sports Technology Exercise Medicine (A-STEM) Research Centre.

Significant research in diabetes and health as well as sedentary behaviour, physical activity, fitness, fundamental movement skills in childhood obesity is undertaken by a number of clinical exercise science staff.

Our elite sport performance group is leading a project supported by the European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Government to position Wales at the forefront of Science, Technology and Medicine in elite sport and to promote its wider application in health and education. This project represents a unique collaboration of leading Welsh academics, businesses and sport, with the overall objective of enhancing their respective performances.

Fundamental links integrating engineering and sport and exercise science research are being developed by the Sports Visualisation Group who analyse video material to rapidly produce data for immediate analysis of sports performance. Recently the Engineering Behaviour Analytics in Sport and Exercise (E-BASE) research group was set up to investigate the use of advanced sensor and processing technology to quantify training and activity in sport and clinical populations respectively.

We have international research links and projects with universities in Southern and Eastern Europe, Scandinavia, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, USE, Italy and Austria.

The Human Performance Laboratory (HPL) at QMUL combines the expertise of sports medicine clinicians, surgeons, engineers and sports scientists with state-of-the-art physiological testing and motion analysis equipment. This collaborative venture offers clinical, educational, research and athlete support service applications in the laboratory or field based settings.

The capabilities of the HPL can be broadly divided into two areas: musculoskeletal biomechanics and physiological testing.

Musculoskeletal biomechanics

The HPL carries 4 Codamotion Cx1 infra-red scanning units that are used extensively for 3-dimensional motion analysis. This system is fully integrated with 2 ground embedded Kistler force plates and a 16 channel wireless EMG system. The integration of these systems allows for full analysis of movement, forces associated with movement and measuring muscular effort during movement. In addition, the HPL also boasts a 64 channel EMG system for multichannel work and an isokinetic dynamometer, which can be used for both research and rehabilitation.

Physiological testing

Detailed analysis of pulmonary gas exchange can be made using an online gas analysis system, in addition to cardiac monitoring using a 12-lead ECG system, during exercise on a treadmill or the electromagnetically braked cycle ergometer. Measures can also be made out in the field, from simple tests of flexibility, strength, speed, power and cardiorespiratory fitness, to comprehensive measurement of expired air using the portable on-line gas analysis system.

Graduates from this sports MRes will be able to use their skills and knowledge to successfully increase their level of integration of sport and exercise medicine within their respective professions and disciplines at an advanced practitioner level. Graduates will be able to contribute to team work with a greater understanding of the inter-relationship between movement mechanisms, the fundamental nature of human performance at all levels and clinical outcome.

Aims of the programme

After completing the course, you will be able to demonstrate:

Expert knowledge on the roles of physical activity and sports exercise in rehabilitation.
The means and techniques to ensure athletes and sports people can perform to their maximum capacity whilst limiting the injury process.
The ability to use your skills and knowledge to successfully increase your level of integration of sport, biomechanics, exercise medicine and rehabilitation within your respective profession or discipline.
The skills and knowledge to undertake a substantive research project in your specialty. You will gain new insights and also the foundations for studying for a higher research degree.

What you will study

The MRes programme consists of five mandatory modules.

Taught modules: 90 credits

Research Project: 90 credits

Module 1: Research Design and Medical Statistics
Module 2: Biomechanics in Sport
Module 3: Measurement Systems in Motion Analysis
Module 4: Management of Soft Tissue and Sports Injuries and Rehabilitation
Module 5: Research Project
After completing the research project, the Master of Research (a minimum of 180 credits) will be awarded.

How you will be taught

Teaching of this MRes Sports Biomechanics and Rehabilitation will primarily be through a combination of flexible learning modules and formal lectures.

Assignments and coursework will foster the development of an enquiry-led, self-directed student approach to learning.

Assessment of modules 1-4 will be by examination upon completion of each individual module and a summative assessment on completion of all four modules. Assessment is weighted - 80% exam and 20% coursework.

During the research project, learning will be partly experiential, partly directed and partly self-directed. The research project will be assessed through the presentation of a dissertation, and the final mark will be moderated through an oral exam in Dundee (90 credits).

Careers

This MRes Sports Biomechanics and Rehabilitation will prepare graduates for a research-focused clinical graduate career in either the NHS or academia, and is particularly well positioned to prepare for entry into a clinical academic career path if you are a clinical graduate. Those students not already in academia or the NHS will broaden their scope of being able to do so and additionally benefit from the multitude of opportunities in the public and private sectors involving sport and exercise.

About the programme

You will develop your conceptual and theoretical understanding in the field of sports coaching and learn practical skills in a range of scientific disciplines to enhance the coaching process. You will critically reflect upon contemporary principles and practices in sports coaching with an emphasis on students becoming effective and reflective practitioners. A significant proportion of the programme is vocationally focused and student driven.

Lectures normally account for 50% of class contact time with the remainder consisting of seminars, practical sessions, laboratory sessions, oral presentations, case studies and poster presentations. You will also have the opportunity to gain experience observing and participating in the service delivery of high performance sport with organisations including St. Mirren FC and The Scottish Institute of Sport.

Practical experience

Practical sessions are supervised and take place in our exercise physiology, strength and conditioning, and sports analysis laboratories. Classes involve observation, demonstration, participation, problem-solving and reporting while others are field-based,
providing necessary practical skills to successfully intervene in an athlete’s physical development. All programme units are explicitly devised to address the optimisation of performance.

MSc

Upon successful completion of the taught modules, students will undertake a project which leads to the MSc award.

Graduates are equipped to collaborate with performers as a coach, strength and conditioner, or in sport science support. The MSc can prepare elite performers to study their own performance and to develop the necessary skills to help their future performance, or prepare them for work opportunities after retirement from sport.

Professional accreditation

The programme provides the necessary foundation knowledge and skills for professional accreditation with a number of bodies including the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES), the United Kingdom Strength and Conditioning Association (UKSCA) or appropriate higher coaching awards (Level 3 or above).

Note: To obtain the MSc, students will usually take 9 months to gain the Postgraduate Diploma and then normally an additional 3 months of study to gain the MSc, from the date of commencement of the project.

UWS School of Science and Sport academics are experts in their field, many with international profiles in science, health and sport and experience with organisations such as the Olympic and Commonwealth bodies, the Scottish Football Association and the Welsh Rugby Union. We also work with a range of partners including Glasgow School of Sport, the Scottish Football Association and we have links with organisations such as Sport Scotland, BASES, UK Sport and many more.

First-class facilities

Our Institute for Clinical Exercise and Health Science provides the underpinning science for our sport programmes. Newly developed
facilities, spanning four floors of the Almada Building at Lanarkshire Campus, are equipped to carry out cutting-edge research and deliver state-of-the-art instruction.

Labs and learning areas include an exercise physiology laboratory, strength and conditioning laboratory, exercise biochemistry laboratory, blood analysis laboratory, EMG-ECGUltrasound laboratory, biomechanics laboratory, social psychology laboratory, a computer laboratory equipped with the latest in student research and learning software,
along with a traditional sports hall.
