What you will study

Core Modules:
- Research Project
This project aims to enable students to demonstrate the skills necessary to produce a scholarly, in-depth, empirical research study, resource, or report.

- Research Methods
This module will develop your ability to design and statistically analyse experimental, quasi-experimental and non-experimental quantitative studies. It will allow you to appreciate the strengths and limitations of the different quantitative and qualitative research designs used in coaching and sport, health and exercise science; and synthesize knowledge and competencies gained during taught modules to produce a scholarly, in-depth critical review and proposal for a research study.

- Effective Coaching
You will develop an advanced understanding of critical self-reflective skills through the use of video analysis, which includes identifying key coaching styles, behaviours and feedback techniques required in advanced coaching situations. In addition, you will develop an in depth understanding of the interdisciplinary approaches that contribute to the coaching process including your ability to recognise and develop current coaching practice and coaching philosophies.

- Professional Work Based Development
This modules provides an opportunity for students to observe and participate in work-based professional environments, including identifying a work problem for you to overcome, which will enhance your professional and vocational learning and inform your own everyday practice. As part of your studies you will critically reflect on your learning throughout the work placement. You will, together with the module team, identify an organisation or organisations that are relevant to your field of study and that will be able to provide 140 hours of work experience.

- Developing Expertise in Sport
This module aims to enable you to develop a systematic knowledge and critical understanding of how coaches develop and maintain expertise in sport and the ability to critically appraise coaching practice in the context of current approaches to skill development

- High Performance Environment
This module focuses on developing a multi-disciplinary perspective of factors that act upon the elite athlete and how these contribute to the development of elite performance. You will analyse how the coach, psychologist, conditioning coach, medical staff and nutritionist assist and complement each other in producing a high performance environment. The management of the performance environment will be discussed and the many issues that underpin successful implementation of elite sport science support will also be analysed.

- Strength and Conditioning
At the end of this module you will have developed your knowledge and critical understanding of concepts and theories regarding strength and conditioning. You will also have developed the ability to implement effective strength and conditioning programmes into a range of performance environments. The above have been closely linked to the professional standards required for accreditation by both the NSCA and the UKSCA.

- Movement Analysis
This module aims to develop your awareness of the analysis of sports performance, with particular emphasis on technique analysis and notation analysis. The use of systematic observation techniques in the analysis of sports performance will also be considered.

Learning and teaching methods

Teaching methods include lectures, video analysis, seminars and workshops, some of which will be student-led. Lectures will be held predominately held on a Monday between 2pm-8pm and /or a Tuesday depending on your module choice. A draft timetable can be requested from the course leader Melanie Tuckwell

The UK Vision for Coaching has clearly identified the need to develop Talent Coaches, Performance Coaches and High Performance Coaches. This course will provide opportunities for individuals to develop in these roles within their National Governing Body or sport.

The amazing feats of world-class athletes across the huge range of sports has projected the issues of performance into the public eye, and sports nutrition is now recognised as a key part of supporting training and competition at all levels of participation. The Masters degree in Sport and Exercise Nutrition at the University of Westminster offers the chance to study the science behind sports nutrition, and its applications for both the 'weekend warrior' and the elite athlete. It also puts the controversies surrounding the use of supplements under scientific scrutiny, looking at the key evidence for and against performance benefits. The aim of the course is to produce sports nutritionists who are strongly focused on the science behind the subject, but who also have some experience of the practicalities of delivering sound guidance to individuals and teams who are looking to use nutrition as part of their training programmes. To this end, a number of guest lecturers contribute their expertise in key related areas, and students are also given the opportunity of shadowing established sports nutrition practitioners.

The course covers the key principles of sports nutrition and exercise physiology, including the latest research papers, and aims to develop the ability to apply critical awareness to topics across the broad remit of sports nutrition, from measurement of exercise performance to the assessment of mental performance. The course can be studied full-time over one year, or in part-time mode over a varying time, up to five years.

Qualified sport and exercise nutritionists find employment in a number of areas, ranging from research, to public health nutrition, to performance training, and many eventually become self-employed and create their own consultancy companies which can be very successful. The course is designed to make transition into any of these areas as smooth and effective as possible.

Professional recognition

The course is accredited by the Association for Nutrition (AFN). This allows students to take the title Associate Nutritionist, which is the first step on the professional recognition and registration ladder.

The Sport and Exercise Nutrition MSc has received the Recognition Award of the International Society for Sports Nutrition (ISSN), and students are encouraged to take the Certification of the ISSN (CISSN) exam towards the end of their period of study.

Fundamental Sport Nutrition

Covers the basics of sport nutrition, including a critical appraisal of the current thoughts with regards to carbohydrate, fat and protein requirements of athletes. The module involves traditional teaching and problem based learning.

Practical Sport Nutrition

As well as gaining professional accreditations in body composition assessment (ISAK), during this module you will be taught the key practical techniques required to work as a sport nutritionist – including diet analysis, assessment of energy expenditure, reflective practice and much more. The module will involve laboratory practicals, as well as classroom based teaching.

Research Skills

To equip you with the skills to perform an independent research project, fundamental research skills and statistical analysis are taught using practical sessions and problem based learning.

Exercise Metabolism

A comprehensive understanding of exercise metabolism is essential to fully understand sport nutrition. This module covers the basics of exercise metabolism, with the role of nutrition clearly embedded in the learning.

Supplements and Drugs in Sport

A sport nutritionist must be able to give accurate and professional advice to athletes with regards to the issues and concerns related to sports supplements. The role of WADA and UKAD will be examined, as well as how to set up safe supplement policies. At the end of the module students are encouraged to sit the free online UKAD anti-doping accreditation which is a requirement of entry onto the SENr register.

Applied Placement

All students engage in a 12 week placement provided by the university. Placements can be in high level sporting clubs such as premier league football or premiership rugby and super league rugby clubs, as well as with local sports clubs. Under mentorship from an experienced LJMU tutor, you will be guided through the process and gain hands-on experience working as a sport nutritionist.

Research Project

All students complete a research project in semester 3. This project can be individual or in small groups and can be on any topic of your choice related to sport nutrition. Some students choose to join current research projects running in the sport nutrition department whilst others prefer to fully design their own project.

On completion of the course, you are registered with the Association of Nutrition (AfN) as an associate nutritionist, which will allow you to use ANutr after your name.

After three years of relevant experience, associate nutritionists can become registered nutritionists. You can apply under one of five specialisms from public health, sports and exercise, nutrition science, animal and food.

The course team has a wide range of expertise ranging from whole body metabolic research, epidemiology, dietary assessment and clinical research to nutrition policy. These aspects are reflected in the course.

Assessment is by a combination of coursework and examination.

Professional accreditation

The course has been accredited by AfN since 2011.

Modular structure

The MSc is a one-year full-time course, involving 30 weeks of taught modules divided into two 15-week semesters commencing in either September or February. The part-time mode follows a similar pattern over two years.

Moving to one campus

Between 2016 and 2020 we're investing £125 million in the London Metropolitan University campus, moving all of our activity to our current Holloway campus in Islington, north London. This will mean the teaching location of some courses will change over time.

Whether you will be affected will depend on the duration of your course, when you start and your mode of study. The earliest moves affecting new students will be in September 2017. This may mean you begin your course at one location, but over the duration of the course you are relocated to one of our other campuses. If you wish to gain practical experience as a Sport and Exercise Nutritionist there is an opportunity to complete an extracurricular training programme during the first few weeks of the course. If you complete the entire programme you will be eligible to apply for an internship. This could provide you with an opportunity to gain experience in sport science working under supervision with our University's sports teams, sporting partners and elite performers, whilst studying for a masters degree.

There are no option modules on this course as it is designed to facilitate preparation for accreditation with the Sport and Exercise Nutrition Register. We will provide opportunities for the development of your professional skills relevant to a host of work across performance sport, physical activity, exercise and health. It will also cover the key theories of sport and exercise nutrition.

Assessment

Modules are assessed through a mix of coursework assignments, case studies, examinations, laboratory reports and presentations appropriate to the programme. Each module is assessed through the equivalent of 4,000 words.

Ergogenic Practices & Nutritional Manipulation in Sport & Exercise (20 credits)

Physiology & Biochemistry for Performance (20 credits)
You will develop a critical understanding of the metabolic and endocrine responses to different types of exercise, their time course and scope for training and detraining adaptations. It will also facilitate the development of laboratory data collection skills.

Research & Professional Practice (20 credits)
This module will equip you with an understanding of the skills and experience necessary to operate as a sport and exercise scientist in a range of professional settings.

This programme provides a postgraduate pathway for graduates who are interested in pursuing a career in the area of sport and exercise nutrition.

- Format and assessment -

The programme is delivered by blended learning (combined distance learning and on campus modules). Students enrolled for the PgDip Sport and Exercise Nutrition course need to undertake modules to a total of 120 credit points and for the MSc undertake an additional research project of 60 credit points. Career options within sport and exercise nutrition are expanding and include becoming a freelance sports nutritionist/performance nutritionist or working with sporting/government organisations. As an accredited course, the programme achieves the competencies required for graduate registration with the British Dietetic Association (BDA) Sport and Exercise Nutrition Register (SENr) meaning those students graduating with the PgDip/MSc are automatically eligible to register with the SENr as a graduate registrant, and following appropriate professional experience graduates are encouraged to pursue full registration.

The program is for students seeking a terminal degree as well as for those seeking a strong foundation for further study and research. The program offers three entry points throughout the academic year, and courses are scheduled to allow an efficient timeline to degree completion for full-time students. Having published more than 100 papers and abstracts, and secured several hundred thousand dollars in funding over the last three years, the students and staff working in the UT Human Performance Research Lab have become nationally and internationally recognized. This MSc in Human Nutrition will be delivered on a one year full-time basis. Core modules in the science of food, nutrition and human health will underpin an advanced understanding of links between diet and health at the individual, population and strategic level. The Master of Science in Horse Science at MTSU centers on a curriculum designed to prepare graduates for the multi-faceted equine industry. Programs are tailored to students’ interests and produce graduates able to adapt to and thrive in this dynamic field. Students may choose from Equine Education, Equine Physiology or Industry Management concentrations. Only the top qualified applicants are invited for an interview at the applicant’s expense, prior to final acceptance into the program. Faculty members mentor students in curriculum development and provide training in scientific methods, principles of equine student education and instruction, and general industry practices. All M.S. degree candidates share a common core of coursework in statistics, research methods, and multiple disciplines in horse science and animal science. A significant number of elective credit hours are available, permitting each student to customize the program with courses in other departments. A limited number of graduate teaching assistantships are available.

Degrees

The Master of Science in Horse Science is offered with three concentrations:

Equine Education includes interdisciplinary courses in coaching and sports management to strengthen knowledge for careers as collegiate riding instructors, equestrian team coaches, horse judging team coaches, or agents for the Cooperative Extension Service.

Equine Physiology emphasizes an interdisciplinary, science-based curriculum structured to build knowledge of scientific principles and apply these principles to a thesis research project related to equine science. Students successfully completing the concentration are prepared for admission into an animal science or equine science Ph.D. program. Students entering this concentration must have a strong foundation in undergraduate biology and chemistry, including organic chemistry.

Industry Management allows students to complete interdisciplinary courses in business management, marketing, and/or sports management to tailor their curriculum for specific industry-related careers.

Equine Education or Industry Management students may choose a research-based thesis or a non-thesis equine experiential learning option. Equine Physiology students must complete a research-based thesis.

The selection procedure is a two-phase process. Based on a review of applications to the M.S. Horse Science program, qualified students are invited for an interview at their expense. Not all applicants are invited for the personal interview.

Nutritional medicine concerns itself with the part that nutrition plays in health, disease, lifecycle and ageing.

The aim of the programme is to inform and educate those to whom the public turns for advice on nutritionally-related aspects of health and disease and those involved in the manufacture of foods and food supplements.

It is appropriate for the in-service training of doctors, dietitians, pharmacists and healthcare workers.

The programme consists of three-day taught periods at the University, preceded by preparatory study, and followed by consolidation and assessment. It will teach you to take a critical and scholarly approach to the theory, practice, literature and research findings within the subject.

This programme will provide students with a broad knowledge and understanding of human nutrition developing scientific skills to master's level. Two taught semesters provides study in core modules in human nutrition. The human nutrition research project is an integral part of this programme where students undertake an independent research project under close supervision.

PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

Our MSc Human Nutrition programme will develop your scientific research skills to an advanced level and fuel your interest in this fascinating and vital discipline.

You will develop a deep understanding of current issues in the field of human nutrition – all taught elements emphasise the evidence-based links between diet, health and disease, and are underpinned by a full appreciation for the nutritional mechanisms involved.

Our excellent links with industry will help you to pursue a successful and rewarding career. The programme also forms an excellent foundation for those who wish to pursue further education via a PhD or research post in industry following graduation.

MSc students may apply for Associate Nutritionist status on the UK Voluntary Register of Nutritionists.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

This programme is studied full-time over one academic year. It consists of eight taught modules and an original research project. WHO IS THIS PROGRAMME FOR?

Our MSc programme caters for the following applicants:
-Surrey biosciences graduates wishing for an opportunity to convert to postgraduate study within Surrey
-Home/EU nutrition graduates from other institutions wishing to further their nutrition training via taught postgraduate study
-Overseas graduates with equivalent of a nutrition degree from a non-UK institution wishing to obtain a recognised UK postgraduate qualification in nutrition
-Home/EU graduates from a related subject (for example, a biological science including biochemistry and physiology) or registrable qualification (for example, medicine, dentistry) seeking a postgraduate qualification as way of conversion into nutrition

WHY CHOOSE TO STUDY HUMAN NUTRITION?

The University of Surrey has long been regarded as a UK centre of excellence for teaching in nutrition and dietetics through our long-running and successful undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.

Staff within the Department of Nutritional Sciences have an internationally recognised expertise in areas such as diabetes, lipid metabolism, cardiovascular risk, bone health, Vitamin D, selenium and iodine, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, obesity and energy balance.

As a postgraduate student, you will be taught by a variety of lecturers who are actively researching the topic being covered, or have a wealth of experience in that particular area. You will also have the opportunity to undertake independent research via a project, guided by a dedicated and experienced supervisor. Projects are available across a range of topics representing the strength and depth of the Department and wider Faculty. You will be working alongside staff, PhD students and post-doctoral researchers to ensure that you receive the full research experience.

This will form an excellent foundation for those MSc students wishing to pursue further education via a PhD or research post in industry.

EDUCATIONAL AIMS OF THE PROGRAMME

-Provide a fundamental understanding of nutritional science, which takes a critical and scholarly approach to relevant theory, practice, literature and latest research findings on the importance of nutrition in diet-health- disease relationships
-Provide new knowledge and understanding of the role of nutrition in both individual and community health
-Discuss the role of diet in the development of disease
-Evaluate the potential, efficacy and scope of nutritional methods in health and disease
-Examine current knowledge of the specific roles of individual macro- and micronutrient deficiencies and imbalances on short- and long-term disease risk
-Explore the concept of optimal nutrition in various special situations
-Develop an understanding of research methodology in the area of Human Nutrition
-Design, undertake, communicate and defend an original research project in nutrition
-Meet the required standards of competency for registered nutritionists as outlined by the Association for Nutrition

-The main principles of current human nutrition
-The methods and approaches used for the purposes of nutritional assessment
-Human metabolism in health and in the pathogenesis of disease
-The main principles of public health in relation to diet and nutrition, both nationally and internationally
-Analytical skills to allow interpretation of data or evidence and formulate conclusions
-The application of nutrition principles to sport and exercise
-The influence of nutrition at the molecular/genetic level
-The therapeutic use of nutrition in the management of disease

Intellectual / cognitive skills
-Find and critically evaluate scientific literature and other appropriate sources of material
-Critically evaluate research design and the methods commonly used in nutrition research
-Use acquired knowledge and appropriate skills to make professional judgements
-Design relevant experiments to test formulated hypotheses

-Demonstrate competence in commonly used nutrition research methodology
-Gather, analyse and interpret qualitative and quantitative data
-Effectively communicate both orally and in writing

-Take responsibility for planning and organisation of work both their own and in a team
