There is currently a high demand for specialisation in the field of applied sports and exercise nutrition. This high demand has partly been driven by employers seeking nutritionists who work within sport to have a higher specialist degree, the continued professional development requirements from professional bodies and be on the Sport and Exercise Nutrition Register (SENr).

The MSc in Applied Sports Nutrition is achieved through the completion of 180 credits: 120 from the taught modules as below and a further 60 credits for the dissertation.

Fundamental Sport Nutrition

Covers the basics of sport nutrition, including a critical appraisal of the current thoughts with regards to carbohydrate, fat and protein requirements of athletes. The module involves traditional teaching and problem based learning.

Practical Sport Nutrition

As well as gaining professional accreditations in body composition assessment (ISAK), during this module you will be taught the key practical techniques required to work as a sport nutritionist – including diet analysis, assessment of energy expenditure, reflective practice and much more. The module will involve laboratory practicals, as well as classroom based teaching.

Research Skills

To equip you with the skills to perform an independent research project, fundamental research skills and statistical analysis are taught using practical sessions and problem based learning.

Exercise Metabolism

A comprehensive understanding of exercise metabolism is essential to fully understand sport nutrition. This module covers the basics of exercise metabolism, with the role of nutrition clearly embedded in the learning.

Supplements and Drugs in Sport

A sport nutritionist must be able to give accurate and professional advice to athletes with regards to the issues and concerns related to sports supplements. The role of WADA and UKAD will be examined, as well as how to set up safe supplement policies. At the end of the module students are encouraged to sit the free online UKAD anti-doping accreditation which is a requirement of entry onto the SENr register.

Applied Placement

All students engage in a 12 week placement provided by the university. Placements can be in high level sporting clubs such as premier league football or premiership rugby and super league rugby clubs, as well as with local sports clubs. Under mentorship from an experienced LJMU tutor, you will be guided through the process and gain hands-on experience working as a sport nutritionist.

Research Project

All students complete a research project in semester 3. This project can be individual or in small groups and can be on any topic of your choice related to sport nutrition. Some students choose to join current research projects running in the sport nutrition department whilst others prefer to fully design their own project.

The Masters degree in Sport and Exercise Nutrition at the University of Westminster offers the chance to study the science behind sports nutrition, and its applications for both the 'weekend warrior' and the elite athlete. It also puts the controversies surrounding the use of supplements under scientific scrutiny, looking at the key evidence for and against performance benefits. The aim of the course is to produce sports nutritionists who are strongly focused on the science behind the subject, but who also have some experience of the practicalities of delivering sound guidance to individuals and teams who are looking to use nutrition as part of their training programmes. To this end, a number of guest lecturers contribute their expertise in key related areas, and students are also given the opportunity of shadowing established sports nutrition practitioners.

The course covers the key principles of sports nutrition and exercise physiology, including the latest research papers, and aims to develop the ability to apply critical awareness to topics across the broad remit of sports nutrition, from measurement of exercise performance to the assessment of mental performance. Qualified sport and exercise nutritionists find employment in a number of areas, ranging from research, to public health nutrition, to performance training, and many eventually become self-employed and create their own consultancy companies which can be very successful. The course is designed to make transition into any of these areas as smooth and effective as possible.

Professional recognition

The course is accredited by the Association for Nutrition (AFN). This allows students to take the title Associate Nutritionist, which is the first step on the professional recognition and registration ladder.

The Sport and Exercise Nutrition MSc has received the Recognition Award of the International Society for Sports Nutrition (ISSN), and students are encouraged to take the Certification of the ISSN (CISSN) exam towards the end of their period of study.

This MSc in Human Nutrition will be delivered on a one year full-time basis. This Masters is available as both a full time course and as a two year part time course.

During your studies you’ll focus on the following modules:

You’ll attend a two-day Immediate Care in Sport course in your induction week and arrange MSK clinics and club placements to give you the opportunity to apply your knowledge through practical experience.

You’ll also have access to our brand new sports facilities and labs, where Olympic athletes train.

The course will equip you with strong team working skills through its interdisciplinary approach to training. You’ll be equipped to work in teams of professionals with complimentary expertise such as strength and conditioning, team coaches, physiotherapists and acute injury settings.

Learning and teaching

Attendance is compulsory and will be approximately one and a half days a month (you will not be expected to be in every week). Recorded lectures of shared modules with other courses will be available to be viewed online, along with specified eLearning material.

Seminars will be recorded, where appropriate. Some practical sessions, group tutorials and specific teaching sessions will be compulsory.

Placements at appropriate professional clubs and NHS clinics will be organised, with some flexibility to negotiate clinic dates and times, and contacts will be provided for self-organised additional experience opportunities. Predominantly we use a case based approach; the eLearning each week will have a relevant case or scenario identified, and required reading and practical tasks set.

There will be a variety of assessments, appropriate for vocational character of the course and the nature of the subjects studied. These will include

You'll have access to a wide range of supervised experience via placements. They are available at NHS Bradford & Airedale MSK clinics; York City FC, Leeds United FC, Hull City FC; options also include GB Swimming, GB Basketball and more.

Career opportunities

This course is designed to train enthusiastic professionals wishing to pursue a career in the relatively new discipline of Sports and Exercise Medicine (SEM). With this Masters, you'll be able to apply what you have learned to any physical activity, exercise or sporting event that requires qualified SEM cover, with immediate effect.

Overall, the course aims to equip you with the skills and expertise to enhance the value of previous training to those organisations.

Employment opportunities exist within NHS musculoskeletal and private sports medicine clinics, as well as sports clubs. Sports and Exercise Medicine is now a recognised training route by the GMC for clinicians.

More about this course

On completion of the course, you are registered with the Association of Nutrition (AfN) as an associate nutritionist, which will allow you to use ANutr after your name.

After three years of relevant experience, associate nutritionists can become registered nutritionists. You can apply under one of five specialisms from public health, sports and exercise, nutrition science, animal and food.

The course team has a wide range of expertise ranging from whole body metabolic research, epidemiology, dietary assessment and clinical research to nutrition policy. These aspects are reflected in the course.

Assessment is by a combination of coursework and examination.

Professional accreditation

The course has been accredited by AfN since 2011.

Modular structure

The MSc is a one-year full-time course, involving 30 weeks of taught modules divided into two 15-week semesters commencing in either September or February. The part-time mode follows a similar pattern over two years.

Career opportunities include employment in the food industry, research, the media and charitable organisations. Graduates are well placed to apply for research studentships with a view to completing a PhD. Career opportunities are increasing in both fields.

Moving to one campus

Between 2016 and 2020 we're investing £125 million in the London Metropolitan University campus, moving all of our activity to our current Holloway campus in Islington, north London. This will mean the teaching location of some courses will change over time.

Whether you will be affected will depend on the duration of your course, when you start and your mode of study. The earliest moves affecting new students will be in September 2017. This may mean you begin your course at one location, but over the duration of the course you are relocated to one of our other campuses. Our intention is that no full-time student will change campus more than once during a course of typical duration.

The program is for students seeking a terminal degree as well as for those seeking a strong foundation for further study and research. The program offers three entry points throughout the academic year, and courses are scheduled to allow an efficient timeline to degree completion for full-time students. Having published more than 100 papers and abstracts, and secured several hundred thousand dollars in funding over the last three years, the students and staff working in the UT Human Performance Research Lab have become nationally and internationally recognized.
