Postgraduate study in Applied Sports Nutrition will not only upgrade your academic and professional skills, but allow you to practice skills and competencies needed to work as a sports nutrition practitioner.

There is currently a high demand for specialisation in the field of applied sports and exercise nutrition. This high demand has partly been driven by employers seeking nutritionists who work within sport to have a higher specialist degree, the continued professional development requirements from professional bodies and be on the Sport and Exercise Nutrition Register (SENr).

Applied Sports Nutrition at St Mary’s is delivered by an effective mix of experienced sports nutrition practitioners and academics, ensuring practical skills and competencies are enhanced.

The course is accredited by the Sport and Exercise Nutrition Register (SENr) as one of their approved programmes and facilitates the preparation of those wanting to join the Register. Practical experience opportunities are encouraged throughout the degree.

This degree has been accredited by the Sport and Exercise Nutrition Register (SENr) as an approved programme.

The MSc in Applied Sports Nutrition is achieved through the completion of 180 credits: 120 from the taught modules as below and a further 60 credits for the dissertation.

Depending on your initial academic background you will take one of the following two modules:

You will also develop essential skills in communicating and implementing your recommendations for clients as well as specialist and non-specialist audiences.

Fundamental Sport Nutrition

Covers the basics of sport nutrition, including a critical appraisal of the current thoughts with regards to carbohydrate, fat and protein requirements of athletes. The module involves traditional teaching and problem based learning.

Practical Sport Nutrition

As well as gaining professional accreditations in body composition assessment (ISAK), during this module you will be taught the key practical techniques required to work as a sport nutritionist – including diet analysis, assessment of energy expenditure, reflective practice and much more. The module will involve laboratory practicals, as well as classroom based teaching.

Research Skills

To equip you with the skills to perform an independent research project, fundamental research skills and statistical analysis are taught using practical sessions and problem based learning.

Exercise Metabolism

A comprehensive understanding of exercise metabolism is essential to fully understand sport nutrition. This module covers the basics of exercise metabolism, with the role of nutrition clearly embedded in the learning.

Supplements and Drugs in Sport

A sport nutritionist must be able to give accurate and professional advice to athletes with regards to the issues and concerns related to sports supplements. The role of WADA and UKAD will be examined, as well as how to set up safe supplement policies. At the end of the module students are encouraged to sit the free online UKAD anti-doping accreditation which is a requirement of entry onto the SENr register.

Applied Placement

All students engage in a 12 week placement provided by the university. Placements can be in high level sporting clubs such as premier league football or premiership rugby and super league rugby clubs, as well as with local sports clubs. Under mentorship from an experienced LJMU tutor, you will be guided through the process and gain hands-on experience working as a sport nutritionist.

Research Project

All students complete a research project in semester 3. This project can be individual or in small groups and can be on any topic of your choice related to sport nutrition. Some students choose to join current research projects running in the sport nutrition department whilst others prefer to fully design their own project.

The amazing feats of world-class athletes across the huge range of sports has projected the issues of performance into the public eye, and sports nutrition is now recognised as a key part of supporting training and competition at all levels of participation. The Masters degree in Sport and Exercise Nutrition at the University of Westminster offers the chance to study the science behind sports nutrition, and its applications for both the 'weekend warrior' and the elite athlete. It also puts the controversies surrounding the use of supplements under scientific scrutiny, looking at the key evidence for and against performance benefits. The aim of the course is to produce sports nutritionists who are strongly focused on the science behind the subject, but who also have some experience of the practicalities of delivering sound guidance to individuals and teams who are looking to use nutrition as part of their training programmes. To this end, a number of guest lecturers contribute their expertise in key related areas, and students are also given the opportunity of shadowing established sports nutrition practitioners.

The course covers the key principles of sports nutrition and exercise physiology, including the latest research papers, and aims to develop the ability to apply critical awareness to topics across the broad remit of sports nutrition, from measurement of exercise performance to the assessment of mental performance. The modules studied are designed to underpin the subject, and create a sound base for the development of ideas for the research project, which offers students a wide degree of flexibility to pursue their personal interests. The course can be studied full-time over one year, or in part-time mode over a varying time, up to five years.

Qualified sport and exercise nutritionists find employment in a number of areas, ranging from research, to public health nutrition, to performance training, and many eventually become self-employed and create their own consultancy companies which can be very successful. Professional recognition

The course is accredited by the Association for Nutrition (AFN). This allows students to take the title Associate Nutritionist, which is the first step on the professional recognition and registration ladder.

This MSc in Human Nutrition will be delivered on a one year full-time basis. Core modules in the science of food, nutrition and human health will underpin an advanced understanding of links between diet and health at the individual, population and strategic level. Nutritional epidemiology will be studied to inform the practice of public health nutrition and how key issues in population health may be addressed. Key and topical issues in sports nutrition will be studied and applied to real world situations. Research modules will provide you with key research skills to design and carry out high quality nutrition research under supervision. You'll become a nutrition professional equipped to work in a range of nutrition settings and you will be eligible to apply to register as an associate nutritionist with the Association for Nutrition.

This programme, established since 1994 and accredited by the Association of Nutrition (AfN), provides students with an expert evidence-based approach to Human Nutrition, integrating teaching on basic sciences, clinical practice and public health applications.

Teaching and learning

Teaching is organised on a module-credit basis, with each module requiring approximately 36 hours of staff contact time and 200 hours of total student input in each 12-week semester.

The main theme of the teaching and learning aspect of this MSc is to encourage you to develop the necessary skills to understand and communicate advanced theoretical and research-based knowledge of nutrition to people who participate in sport and exercise. Learning methods reflect the wide variety of topics associated with applied sport and exercise nutrition and include lectures, directed reading, workshops, seminars, practical exercises, laboratory sessions and project work. The research project will be supervised on a one-to-one basis.

Student performance in each module is usually assessed by evaluation of the quality of written or design work, and verbal presentations. Assessment methods may include essays, seminar papers, formal written examinations, in-class tests, project case work, design and verbal presentations, workshops, simulations, and practical exercises.

Many sports are becoming increasingly professional in their approach to training and nutrition. For example, many sports clubs now employ full-time nutrition consultants. Career prospects outside sport are perhaps even more exciting. The NHS offers an increasing number of opportunities for students with specialist training in exercise nutrition to support GP referral schemes and other healthy living programmes. The growing awareness of health within society, coupled with misunderstandings about the relationships between physical activity, nutrition and health has led to an increasing demand for graduates who can deliver evidence-based solutions and advice at all levels. Research or teaching within further or higher education also provide potential career opportunities.

Graduates progress to a diverse range of careers including exercise and lifestyle consultants based within hospitals and private practice. This MSc will provide you with the knowledge and skills to manage sports injuries and illness and to explore the relationship between physical activity and health.

The clinical SEM course is aimed at doctors, physiotherapists and allied professionals with a strong musculoskeletal clinical background. We feel strongly that the range of backgrounds of the students provides students with a rounded education, drawing on the wide ranging clinical experience and different expertise of the students and lecturers.

Key facts

Clinical exposure - The MSc offers students the opportunity to sit in Sports Medicine clinics with consultant SEM doctors and physiotherapists. In these clinics the student will have exposure to all sections of the community, children, recreational athletes, elite athletes and the elderly. The student will see a wide ranging spectrum of musculoskeletal problems and first hand investigation and treatment.

Face to face teaching - One of the strengths of the Nottingham MSc is the face to face teaching that take place. This allows students real time interaction with clinicians, scientists and lecturers, enabling in depth exchange of knowledge and ideas. We believe that with this the student has a much greater understanding of the subject than with distance learning.

Pitch side exposure - Included in the fees is a Gold standard pitch side emergency care course (EMMiITS). This takes place at the beginning of the academic year and success in this course enables the student to undertake pitch side emergency care at the weekly BUCS matches. Students may wish to undertake a placement with a professional team and we will facilitate this whether ever possible.

Full and part-time option - As many of our students are practising professionals we have developed a range of study options to enable them to continue with their clinical practice whilst studying. The full time course is undertaken over one year. The part time course covers the same modules but can be taken over 2, 3, or 4 years.

Research projects - The research projects are a key strength of the course. Students are encouraged to undertake a project in a field of interest. However we acknowledge that not all students will be able to do this and we have a range of projects within the department that students can undertake, within both clinical SEM and also in nutrition and muscle physiology within the School of Life Sciences. International students have the opportunity to develop research and undertake research projects within their home country.

Course quality - The MSc has a faculty of excellent internal and external lecturers of all disciplines, all experts in their field. Many of the lecturers work at a national and international level in Sport and Exercise Medicine. Established in 1991, the MSc Sports and Exercise Medicine is one of the longest running SEM courses in the country and is constantly updated and improved. This successful programme is recognised nationally and internationally as one of the top sports and exercise medicine courses for the rounded sports medicine specialist.

This course is now delivered as part of the National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine – East Midlands (NCSEM-EM), which is a London 2012 legacy funded project aimed at improving the health and wellbeing of the nation.

Structure

The MSc Sports and Exercise Medicine can be taken full-time over one year or part-time over two to four years. As an MSc student, you will study a series of core modules in sports and exercise medicine, which includes research methods tutorials, in addition to the compulsory project and dissertation module. This is an exciting opportunity to undertake research on a subject related to sports and exercise medicine or exercise physiology under the supervision of an appropriate member of academic staff. There are also a wide variety of optional modules to meet your specific interests.

This course can also be taken as a Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) by those who do not wish to complete a research project and dissertation. The PGDip can be taken full-time over 9 months or part-time over 18 months.

The syllabus is covered by lectures, seminars, sport placements, anatomy teaching in our dissection room, eLearning and practical sessions. The course includes a two-day programme in Emergency Medical Management in Individual and Team Sports (EMMiITS).

Nutrition and Health focuses on the role of dietary and lifestyle factors in human health and disease. This role is studied from a biomedical perspective at the individual and population levels. In addition, the mechanisms underlying beneficial and adverse effects are studied at the sub-cellular (DNA), cellular and organ/ organism levels. Human nutrition is a multidisciplinary field of expertise. To solve problems in nutrition and health, you must consider chemical and biochemical characteristics, physiological and biomedical aspects, the social and behavioural context of nutrition, and the relationships between these factors. Solving problems in this domain requires multidisciplinary biomedical knowledge and skills as well as an interdisciplinary approach to communication with experts in human nutrition and other fields.

Epidemiology and Public Health
Epidemiologists try to determine causal relationships in large groups of people, such as the elderly or people with cardiovascular problems; between food, lifestyle and the development of diseases. Research results act as starting points for health advice and lead to a greater understanding of cause and effect. If you know that certain behaviour leads to a disease, that behaviour can be addressed, and the effectiveness of the efforts to do so can be measured. You will be helping to improve the overall health of people and may be able to prevent food-related diseases from developing.

Complete Online Master

Nutritional Physiology and Health Status
In this specialisation, you will study various age groups and situations, such as growth, pregnancy, and food consumption behaviour. You will also review special situations including serious diseases (clinical food), during sports and activity. You may also research the food consumption behaviour and habits of individuals and how you may be able to influence that, for example, through portion sizes. In short, you will review different aspects and will learn what the effects are of food consumption patterns and the physiological processes on the body and what that means for the status of its health and illness.

Molecular Nutrition and Toxicology
In this specialisation, you will learn to use techniques, at molecular and cellular levels, to discover the mechanism driving the relationship between food and health. In toxicology, you will learn to study the possible poisonous effects of substances present in food. For instance, new ingredients in food products and additives, but also natural substances present in our food. The relationship between food consumption, food and medicines can also be researched and through this research, you will find many new leads to improving our health.

Sensory Science
This specialisation is positioned at the interface of the programmes Food Technology and Nutrition and Health. Sensory scientists deal with the way humans perceive the world and act upon sensory input. They address how sensory systems function, from stimulation and perception to cognition and behaviour. You will work with humans and products in different contexts and study the way in which product properties affect, for example, sensory perception. The study always keeps a link to the application of this knowledge in the fields of human health and the design, production and consumption of attractive healthy foods.

Your future career

Many of our graduates begin working as researchers or PhD students. Another group becomes advisors, trainers or take up other jobs in the private sector. The majority of graduates finds employment at universities (including university medical centres), research institutes (TNO Nutrition or RIVM), in the public sector (national, regional and local governments, Netherlands Nutrition Centre, District Health Authorities) or companies involved with nutrition, pharmacology and toxicology (Unilever, Nutricia, Friesland Campina, Danone Research, Novartis). As graduates progress in their careers, they usually advance to a (more) managerial level.

What is this course about?

There has been a growing demand for Strength and Conditioning practitioners outside of professional sport structures, with the increasing professionalisation of amateur sports such as the GAA. The 'fitness trainer' of a decade ago that tended to be assume sole responsibility for the physical conditioning of inter-county Gaelic football and hurling/camogie teams, has now been replaced by 'Strength and Conditioning teams'. There is also a pattern of Strength and Conditioning practitioners working closely with special populations (paediatric & seniors), physiotherapists, sports rehabilitators and athletic therapists in both prevention and rehabilitation of athletes to return them to performance from injury. This new two year part-time programme will provide an opportunity for students to study for a MSc in Strength and Conditioning, corresponding to a Level 9 Qualification (90 ECTS credits). The overall aim of the programme is to provide an intellectually challenging applied postgraduate programme of study that will give graduates advanced knowledge, understanding and practical coaching skills in Strength and Conditioning. This will enable them to work with both elite athletes and specialist population groups. Graduates of the programme will be eligible to apply for membership to the Irish Institute of Sport (IIS), United Kingdom Strength and Conditioning Association (UKSCA) and the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) based in the United States of America.

The first part of the programme is designed to develop the knowledge, skills and analytical techniques in the sub-disciplines of Advanced Resistance Training, Explosive Conditioning, Metabolic Conditioning, Sports Nutrition and Periodisation. With the primary emphasis on preparing athletes and players for optimum sports performance, these modules combine more advanced theoretical and practical elements of Strength and Conditioning, providing students with the skillls to operate as a Strength and Conditioning Practitioner in a sports performance environment. The elective options of the programme provide the opportunity for students to develop further specialist skills; ranging from Injury Rehabilitation and Reconditioning and High Performance Testing, to the emerging fields of Strength and Conditioning for paediatric and geriatric population groups. Students who elect to complete the full MSc programme will also undertake a Research Project in a relevant field of study that will hone their research and analytical skills.

What follow-on study opportunities are available?
Students who successfully complete 60 credits of the programme will be eligible for the Postgraduate Diploma in Science (Level 9) should they opt to leave the programme Embedded Exit Award).

Postgraduate Diploma in Science in Strength & Conditioning is an Embedded Exit Award.

What are the entry requirements?

- This programme is suited to graduates from a range of disciplines including sports science, physical education, physiotherapy, athletic therapy and sports rehabilitation and coaching [minimum requirement relevant Level 8 (Honours Degree) minimum 2nd class honours)].

- Candidates with significant experience in the Rehabilitation/Sport Science field (as determined by Recognition of Prior Learning), in addition to an Honours Primary Degree in another discipline area may also be considered for entry.

- Applicants applying for entry via routes other than those listed above will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Criteria to be considered will include academic qualifications and recognition of prior learning.

- Applicants may be called for interview as part of the application process.
