CONSUMER SCIENCES

Students must complete 30 hours of coursework. A minimum of 24 semester hours of course credit, including HES 509, two courses in statistics, and 15 hours in courses in the area of specialization are required. Students must complete 6 credit hours of thesis research and write a thesis. A final oral examination is required upon completion of the thesis, and a manuscript of publishable quality based on the thesis research is expected of each Plan I degree candidate.

FAMILY FINANCIAL PLANNING AND COUNSELING

In the financial planning specialty within the 30-hour Master of Science degree program, students will study economic and social influences on the family and learn how to help individuals and families achieve their financial goals. Coursework includes 24 hours of financial planning coursework and 6 hours of electives in the area of specialization. By taking two courses each semester, students may complete this M.S. degree in less than two years. The program is offered both in Tuscaloosa and by distance.

CONSUMER CONFLICT MANAGEMENT, NEGOTIATION, AND MEDIATION

The certificate requires the successful completion of 15 hours of course work, in addition to the hours required for the masters in the student’s discipline. All 15 hours may count toward the master’s degree. Students must apply and gain admission to the UA Graduate School. Students must adhere to all UA Graduate School admission policies and deadlines. See Section 4.3 of the UA Graduate Catalog.

Students who wish to complete the Graduate Certificate in Conflict Management, Negotiation, and Mediation must meet admissions criteria for the Master’s degree in General Studies in Human Environmental Sciences with a 3.0 or higher GPA. If the prospective student does not have the 3.0 overall GPA or a 3.0 on the last 60 hours of course work, then the student must provide the GRE or MAT with an appropriate score. CONSUMER QUALITY MANAGEMENT

Prepare yourself to become a quality management leader by earning your Master of Science in Human Environmental Sciences with a specialization in Consumer Quality Management from The University of Alabama. This 30-hour program is offered completely online to make earning a degree convenient for working adults. If you currently work or would like to work in quality management and would like to develop a deeper understanding of the field, this degree program can help you reach your goals. The CQM specialization will provide you with a comprehensive study of the facilitation skills necessary to lead an organization in continuous improvement.

INTERACTIVE TECHNOLOGY

The Institute for Interactive Technology offers a 30-hour asynchronous Master’s degree specialization in Interactive Technology focused on computer-mediated communications (General HES Degree). Students work with professors in adapting course projects to a particular profession. The focus is on how individuals and organizations interact with technology and might be described as “the difference between doing work and going to work,” reflecting the computer-mediated nature of the program.

SPORTS BUSINESS MANAGEMENT

Faculty members from the College of Human Environmental Sciences (CHES) have developed a 30 hours graduate level emphasis in Sports Business Management (Sport, Hospitality, and Entertainment Operations) at The University of Alabama. MSc Management with 14 weeks Work Placement (Optional)
The MSc Management (with Professional Practice) incorporates a compulsory work placement component of 14 weeks which allows students to take their learning outside the classroom and pairs them with companies in the UK.

Brunel Business School is amongst the first few Business Schools in the UK to introduce postgraduate placements for students completing their Masters programmes as far back as 2011. This feature, pioneered in the UK for undergraduate students by Brunel University, is becoming more popular amongst more mature students, for whom such a placement can often serve as a springboard to often extremely competitive labour market. Postgraduate work placement employers cover all related expenses with many also providing a salary.

At Brunel we provide many opportunities and experiences within your degree programme and beyond – work-based learning, professional support services, volunteering, mentoring, sports, arts, clubs, societies, and much, much more – and we encourage you to make the most of them, so that you can make the most of yourself.

Teaching

As an active research university, international level research findings by Brunel Business School tutors are regularly used in lectures. Tutors on this programme are leaders in the field of management and active researchers within one of the six centres of research within the school.

Modes of Study

1-year full-time in September: The taught element of the course (September to April) includes eight modules; delivery will be by a combination of lectures, seminars and tutorials/group work. A further four months (May to September) is spent undertaking the dissertation.

1-year full-time in January: The taught element of the programme includes 8 modules which are delivered in two terms (four in January to April, and four in September to December); delivery will be by a combination of lectures, seminars and tutorials/group work. The dissertation is undertaken May to August, and then can be completed January to March after the second teaching term.

Assessment

Modules are typically assessed by individual assessment and an examination in May.

Teaching methods include lectures and informal small study groups.

Coursework and examination assignments place considerable stress on the ability to think and reason critically, but constructively.

The dissertation (12,000 words) is the capstone demonstration of these various skills, requiring students to conceive, justify, design in detail and execute a major project.

Assessment may include some numerical analysis tasks as well as reporting on published financial data.

Tasks related to the gathering of published data or field investigation to new data.

Individual and/or group presentations using laptops, PCs and digital projectors.

The School of Sport and Wellbeing has strong links with a large number of sports organisations, including professional sports teams, public and private sector sports providers and grassroots sports clubs. We regularly invite in guest speakers from industry to speak to students within the modules on this course. This represents a valuable opportunity for students to meet potential employers and learn about life in the sports industry. For example, we have had guest lectures given by representatives of Wigan Warriors Rugby League Club, Bolton Wanderers Football Club, St Helens Rugby League Club, David Lloyd Leisure and Preston City Council. Students have also visited the UK headquarters of Adidas, where they were given a lecture on the company’s marketing activities.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT

The teaching and learning environment will be interactive and challenging. It is organised to ensure that key concepts, theories and, where appropriate, practices relevant to marketing and management in the sports industry form a central role into your learning. Throughout the programme you will engage in a range of learning activities including lectures, seminars, debates, case studies, presentations, online activities, directed readings and group work.

Guest speakers from academia and/or the sports industry regularly contribute to modules, offering you additional practical and theoretical insight. The use of guest speakers on the course is designed to facilitate networking opportunities for students to meet with potential employers. The staff on the programme are friendly and supportive and they also have a considerable experience both within higher education and working in the sports industry.

Assessment on each of the modules is designed to maximise your learning in relation to both subject-specific knowledge and understanding and wider skills, including communication, problem solving and teamwork. Assessment types include reports, consultancy projects, essays, oral and multimedia presentations, debates and a dissertation.

FURTHER INFORMATION

Sport is now a multi-billion dollar global industry and the content of the taught modules is reflective of the global context in which sports organisations operate, with use made of a range of international case studies. The module 'The Sports Industry' explicitly examines the global business context of sport, while Principles and Practice of Sports Marketing incorporates international sports marketing as a key theme. Students will be given flexibility in assessments to draw on international materials, such as case studies of global and/or non-UK sports brands. Depending on the availability of suitable partners, students may be able to work on live international sports marketing consultancy projects, with either UK or non-UK-based organisations.

An integral part of the course is the Consultancy Project, which is an opportunity for students to work on a “live” sports marketing and business management project for an external client, agreed using a project specification negotiated between the student, client and academic supervisor. The Consultancy Project offers students the opportunity to apply the theoretical and practical knowledge that they have developed within the programme in a relevant, practical context. Previous students have worked on projects with a range of sports organisations, including professional sports teams, facilities, local authority and private sector providers and grassroots sports clubs.

This is an interdisciplinary program designed to teach management skills, covering areas such as; sports marketing and management, sports advertising, and media relations. The industry offers diverse and dynamic opportunities to graduates, ranging from professional sports to managing events and corporate sponsorships.

Course structure

The MBA in Sports Management program lasts one year, divided into three terms. Each term students complete five courses, including industrial visits and guest speaker sessions. In order to graduate, students must complete a management research methods module and a dissertation subject in addition to the other courses.

This unique programme encompasses the central functions of corporate, senior and operational management including financial management, governance, corporate strategy, strategic marketing and leadership. This degree is delivered in the state-of-the-art UCFB Wembley campus, with the iconic Wembley Stadium at its heart.

The specificity of sport, with its high media coverage and numerous stakeholders, requires managers to have uniquely honed business skills and an in-depth knowledge of the principles of sports management. The MSc Sport Management has therefore been developed for those with aspirations towards senior or line management positions within the core functional departments of the sports management industry.

At UCFB we bridge the gap between academia and business. In parallel to the academic curriculum runs the Employment & Enrichment Programme; a journey of professional and personal development through learning and knowledge enhancement activities. The Employment & Enrichment Programme allows access to industry leading guest speakers, business opportunities and additional classes.

The MSc Sport Management is suitable for graduates of all disciplines and for professionals working within the sports industry, in management, marketing, operations or other appropriate areas, and who wish to build on that experience through a structured programme of study.

As a capstone to the MSc Sport Management degree, students may have an opportunity to specialise their academic experience by undertaking a research project with a sports organisation, leveraging UCFB’s global network of contacts with leading organisations such as The Football Association, BBC Sport, the US Tennis Association, the Rugby Football League, as well as a multitude of football and sporting clubs both domestically and overseas. MSc students are also encouraged to apply for short term placements, internships and projects via our dedicated Employability and Enrichment team.

Course content

Financial and Human Capital Management

This module develops students’ understanding of the ways in which financial and management information can be used to achieve competitive advantage. The module also examines the evolution of human resource management, human capital management, and their interaction with accounting and finance.

Strategic Sports Marketing Management

This module addresses the importance of marketing plans to sporting clubs and organisations and helps to develop well-informed strategic marketing plans, while critically appraising the range of academic material that is available to the sports marketer. While the module addresses practical aspects of marketing and takes account of the latest developments in social media and communication with customers, the main emphasis is on strategic marketing management and will require students to devise a plan and suggest ways of allocating their marketing budget.

Sustainable Stadium and Event Management

To explore current and future issues around sustainable sports management. The course uses the concept of sustainability to explore key contemporary issues such as: Types of sports venues, construction and refurbishment, venue design, event delivery, stakeholder management, venue marketing, and venue management. Each topic will include a balance between the establishment of a theoretical base, and the investigation of practical case-studies.

Leadership and Influence in Sport

The aim of this module is to understand the conceptualisation of leadership within the sporting and business world via the drivers of influence, mutuality and future.

Aims:

· Review different theories of leadership and their relevance to leadership practice, thus allowing learners to analyse critical incidents to judge organisational leadership performance.

· Understand how the role and nature of the organisation affects the leadership knowledge, skills and behaviour needed by senior leaders, while taking responsibility for own personal development and effectiveness in the leadership role.

Corporate Strategy in a Sporting Context

In order to be an effective sport manager, it is essential to possess a comprehensive and systematic understanding of the importance of corporate strategy in management, and to demonstrate how this can be applied in the area of international football and sporting management. Students will extend research skills alongside new analytical techniques in order to analyse the business environment. Students will be expected to show a critical awareness of how to carry out complex analysis of this information and explain the current strategic position of the organisation.

Current Themes in Sports Law

Sport is big business but the right to exploit its commercial value is not unfettered. This module explores how, under English and European Union law, an event organiser is able to exploit the commercial value of sport whilst also protecting its rights from infringement by third parties.

The module places this legal discussion in a multi-disciplinary context by examining the historical commercialisation of sport and how that contributed to the juridification of the sector and why and how some sports adopted various business models, for example the development of the Premier League and the Champions League. The module examines whether the specificities of sport preclude the application of UK and EU law to these business practices or whether the law should treat sport in the same way as any other economic activity.

Dissertation and Research Methods

The individual research project focuses on producing an in depth piece of work which has theoretical/ practical/ industrial/commercial relevance to the sports industry. Ideally, this will be a piece of industry sponsored work to produce a commercial output for the sponsor. The work need not be sports-related but mat be applied in the area of sports.

The course combines the expertise of two of the University’s Schools: the Ulster University Business School and the Ulster University School of Sport, and is suitable for aspiring graduates from any academic discipline.

This MSc is designed for those who recognise the need to progress their academic study in order to embark on a successful career in sports management. The modules on the course offer a comprehensive introduction to the essential areas of business and management. In addition to the taught modules, the course places a substantial emphasis on developing students’ employability skills. Attendance

The MSc Sport Management course is offered on both a full-time and part-time basis. The full-time route has a one year duration and the part-time route is studied over two years, both starting in the Autumn Semester (September).

The modules on the course will provide students with a thorough grounding in general business and management principles as well as the specifics relating to the area of sports management. Students begin the course by studying towards the Postgraduate Diploma. On successful completion of this they progress onto the full Master's qualification.

Work placement / study abroad

An internship forms an essential part of this course. Students work alongside an employer in semester 3 which allows them to gain some good work experience to further apply and contextualise skill sand develop their CVs. This internship also forms the basis of the final assessment on the course - the Management Project.

Students have worked in local sport goods manufacturers and clothing organisations such as Ecco and Adidas as well as with sports clubs, teams and organisations such as the Belfast Giants, Ulster Rugby and the IFA.

Career options

There are a variety of careers available to graduates of the course. Many students take up roles within the sports industry, for example in consultancy, marketing or administration. Other graduates have made use of the more generic business and management skills that are taught on the course to gain employment with organisations such as Apple.

This course can only be studied with our partner in The Netherlands, the Wittenborg University of Applied Sciences. The course is taught in English and delivered by academics from both the University of Brighton and the Wittenborg University of Applied sciences.

Course structure

You will experience a dynamic blend of academic study, research and – through the placement module – hands-on learning. The combination of academic study and practical analysis has been designed to provide greater depth of knowledge and future career success.

Course delivery:

The emphasis of the course is on using a theoretical approach to analyse and evaluate the Sport Business sector. If you are already working in the sector you’ll be able to use your existing knowledge to underpin your studies, whilst if you are a recent graduate there is the opportunity for more supported learning.

All core modules are taught in intensive blocks of two to three days. Depending on the module this could include a combination of university-based teaching, online seminars, tutorial support and webinars. The Professional Enquiry module is a combination of teaching and online tutorials which will support you during an organisational experience or project. Some optional modules will be delivered entirely online and others will be all classroom based.

The flexibility of the teaching method for the Sport Business Management MSc facilitates combining studying for a masters with a professional career. It also means that your commitment to attending the university’s campus may be different from others studying the same course.

Syllabus

A distinctive feature of the course is the flexibility and choice of your final project. Guided and supported by your personal supervisor, you have several options available to you. Whether an academic dissertation or an applied piece of research, such as a business or enterprise project, the final project allows you to pursue an area of particular interest and helps you to build knowledge and skills for your future career.

The course will address contemporary issues recognised as the major challenges and opportunities for sport business management. This includes researching the complex relationships between sports business and governing bodies, pressure groups and government agencies, and analysing the mechanisms by which sport generates revenue through TV and media rights, gate receipts, sponsorship and merchandise.

Core management studies involving strategy, marketing, sponsorship, operations management, finance, law and human resources are integrated within various compulsory modules that make up the core of the course. You can study areas of personal interest through two optional modules.

Professional experience

Professional-Based Learning Module:

All credit-based postgraduate courses at the School of Sport and Service Management offer the Professional-Based Learning module.

The module offers you an opportunity to undertake practical experience in a work environment and gain invaluable first-hand knowledge. It is designed to help you engage with the process of planning and delivering expertise in practice, and to reflect upon and take steps to improve your academic, personal and professional skills.

In Semester 1 (September–January) you will have classes on CV development, interview skills, target setting, reflective practice and experiential learning, leading to 100 hours of professional experience in Semester 2 (February–June). This experience could take the form of a part-time job, an unpaid internship, a volunteering opportunity in the university or time as a mentee in your chosen industry. You can also take this module as part of a live consultancy in connection with one of your tourism, sport, hospitality or event modules, either in the UK or a School of Sport and Service Management project overseas.

Our school-based Employability Hub will be on hand to assist you in securing an experience that best meets your career goals and aspirations. Professional experience will enhance your practice and academic knowledge, and many of our students have started their careers with their placement organisation.

Employment prospects

Management positions exist within marketing, sales, planning, sports events, sport administration and facility management. Organisations that offer these positions include professional sport clubs, sport governing bodies, sport public agencies, sport community recreation departments, sporting goods companies, sport marketing agencies, sport event organisers, health and leisure clubs and athletic service organisations.

Teaching and Assessment

You will be taught through a combination of lectures, tutorials, seminars, group work and self-directed study. Assessment is through a variety of methods including presentations, essays and case studies.

Your precise timetable will depend on the mode of study you choose to take, however you will normally attend a contact week at the beginning of each semester together with another in week 7 of the academic calendar with timetabled taught sessions (lectures and tutorials) and guest speakers. We expect you to undertake at least 114 further hours of independent study to complete project work and research for each module.

Course Modules

- History, Structure and Governance of Motorsport aims to provide a solid theoretical background on key themes within the context of the history and development of motorsport. This module will also provide a thorough understanding of the roles, responsibilities and operating framework of the key regulatory and commercial organisations within the motorsport industry

- Site Visits, Foreign Trip and Motorsport Business Reflection affords students the perfect opportunity to interact with the motorsport world through visiting various motorsport sites such as Donnington, the MSA and Prodrive. Industry leaders will offer an insight into their roles and the organisation’s objectives within motorsport

- Ethics in Sports Management and Governance concentrates on ethical issues in the modern sports industry and explores crises in the sector. You will develop an agenda for reform and examine legal and organisational frameworks relating to problem areas in sport. This module also covers existing regulations, management and governance in relation to other business and cultural areas

- Sports Heritage and Legacy Management will consider the development of heritage and legacy in sport by examining the legal, academic, cultural, commercial and political frameworks relevant, both nationally and internationally. The module will include visits to key sport venues and museums, as well as travel to Rome for historical context

- Sponsorship Models in Elite Motorsport and the Role of the Media offers the opportunity to look at a wide range of commercial principles as applied through third party support and sponsorship of motorsport activity. Commercial case studies and lectures from industry experts will form a central part of this module

- Commerce within Motorsport provides the opportunity to analyse a wide range of commercial principles applied within the motorsport industry. From budgeting and financial management of competing in motorsport as a driver or team, the costs of managing motorsport venues, sponsorship and brand activity through to the need for fan engagement

- Motorsport Brands, their Extension and Future Trends explores a range of topics related to the current and future commercial rationale for brands becoming associated with motorsport. You will critically assess what brands look for in their association with motorsport and identity how this is likely to evolve in the future

- Work Professionalism Skills focuses on commercial employability skills, enabling students to undertake the Executive Company Project and post-study job applications and interviews with a professional and prepared approach.

- Executive Company Project gives you the opportunity to create an individual and sustained piece of work to address a specific area in the field of business management and sport. This will involve a dissertation supported by appropriate background research and the application of theoretical knowledge
