The course's strong focus on research skills provides an ideal platform for further study at PhD level. It is also an important first step into employment and can open many other doors into further training.
Sport scientists support athletes or sports clubs, they generally provide advice and support, designed to monitor and improve sport performance, alongside a team of specialists including coaches, psychologist, performance managers and medical staff. Areas of expertise include • strength and conditioning • physiology • nutrition and analysis of movement and tactical performance.
Exercise scientists are more concerned with improving a person's health and helping them recover from illness through a structured programme of physical activity and other health-based interventions. They are also involved with preventative treatments and work closely with GPs and primary care trusts or private healthcare organisations. Exercise scientists might be employed by local authorities to run community based health and exercise initiatives.
It may be possible to move into a particular clinical area, such as cardiology, or work as a health promotion specialist for a local authority or healthcare trust. Our close links with the National Centre for Sport and Exercise medicine, part of which is based in Sheffield, will provide additional opportunities to those wishing to pursue careers in this area.

Rapid growth in the volume and variety of sports publications, sports-related internet sites, and enhanced mass media exposure of sports events and activities is resulting in an increase in the need for individuals with a knowledge of sport communications/media.

Before you start the course, we supply you with an induction pack that includes a reading list to introduce you to the general management and specialist modules. We also run an induction programme to prepare you for the course.
During the induction we assess your existing study, IT and language (for international students) skills. This assessment leads to an individual learning plan to improve and develop your skills. We also provide language tuition as needed, if your first language is not English. Dissertation workshops help you to prepare for your dissertation.

Sport and exercise science research occurs within the world-leading Applied Sports Technology Exercise Medicine (A-STEM) Research Centre.
Significant research in diabetes and health as well as sedentary behaviour, physical activity, fitness, fundamental movement skills in childhood obesity is undertaken by a number of clinical exercise science staff.
Our elite sport performance group is leading a project supported by the European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Government to position Wales at the forefront of Science, Technology and Medicine in elite sport and to promote its wider application in health and education. This project represents a unique collaboration of leading Welsh academics, businesses and sport, with the overall objective of enhancing their respective performances.
Fundamental links integrating engineering and sport and exercise science research are being developed by the Sports Visualisation Group who analyse video material to rapidly produce data for immediate analysis of sports performance. Recently the Engineering Behaviour Analytics in Sport and Exercise (E-BASE) research group was set up to investigate the use of advanced sensor and processing technology to quantify training and activity in sport and clinical populations respectively.

The programme gives you the opportunity to critically examine the theoretical bases of science in understanding sport and exercise, the assessment methods and their practical application within physiology, psychology and biomechanics.
This programme will enable you to gain a critical appreciation of a multi-disciplinary approach to contemporary issues in sport and exercise science, along with the assessment of performance and support for the exerciser and athlete. You will be equipped to critically analyse and evaluate complex and specialised assessment and support techniques in sport and exercise, and to select the most appropriate methods for clients from one (or all) of the disciplines of biomechanics, physiology and psychology.
In helping you build on your practical skills, the course will enable students to understand the relationships between theoretical concepts and current techniques of assessment and support, through a range of practice-based learning and assessment where you will benefit from the feedback of staff and peers. This course will give you opportunities to gain knowledge and understanding in applied ways in relation to sport and exercise science field.
You will also have the opportunity to conduct independent research project with the support and supervision from our staff. You will have access to the state-of-the-art facilities in our Sport and Exercise Research Centre.
You will be able to select a range of modules from the three key disciplines in the programme, psychology, biomechanics and physiology, with a wide selection of optional modules and the chance to undertake your own research in an area that interests you.

The focus of this MRes Sport and Exercise Psychology course is on developing research expertise, with a project conducted over the entire year of study. The textiles industry is continually evolving. Developing new products that meet the needs of a changing market demands a combination of technology and design technology. This programme will give you access to the latest developments across the textile industry to equip you for these challenges.
You’ll receive training in key skills including laboratory practice, problem solving, and reasoning, and you’ll undertake a substantial research dissertation. In addition, you’ll have the chance to specialise in either textile technology or textile design technology, depending on your own interests and career plans. A variety of optional modules will also give you the chance to learn about topics such as medical textiles, or fashion and sustainability.
Taught by experts in one of the UK’s major hubs for textile research, this programme will help you gain the specialist knowledge and skills to build a career in a fast-paced and challenging industry.

The course is accredited by the Society of Dyers and Colourists as being equivalent to its ASDC examinations leading to Chartered Colourist (CCol) status. It is also accredited by The Textile Institute at Associate level (CText ATI), this demonstrates a good broad knowledge of textiles and its application, and allows you to apply for Licentiateship (LTI) upon graduation, and Associateship (CText ATI) after one year in industry.
Everyone studies the same compulsory modules throughout the programme, which allow you to become a confident researcher and give you experience of practical lab work in Semester 2. You’ll apply the knowledge and skills that you have gained throughout the course to a substantial piece of independent research, which you’ll submit by the end of the programme in September.

Textile Design Technology pathway
In the modules on this pathway you’ll learn how to view technology through the eyes of both the designer and the technologist. You’ll gain understanding of how to manipulate technology to design and produce new products and how to maintain and/or improve the desirability of current products.
Textile Technology pathway
You will gain in-depth knowledge of advanced textile technology, textile processes and quality management together with the science, technology and testing of functional textile materials, product development, coloration and finishing processes, medical textiles, nonwovens and performance clothing.
If you choose to study part-time, you’ll study over a longer period and take fewer modules in each year.
We use various teaching and learning methods, including practicals, lectures, seminars and tutorials. Independent study is also vital to this degree, allowing you to develop your skills and prepare for taught sessions so you can make the most of them.
You’ll be assessed by a range of methods including essays and exams as well as practical and project work, reports, literature reviews and presentations.
This degree is designed to equip you with a wide range of knowledge and skills to succeed in careers such as textile management, technical consultancy, and education and training. You’ll also be well prepared to continue with academic research in textiles at PhD level.
If you take the Textile Design Technology pathway, you could work in the industry as designers or in areas, which need an understanding of technology and design e.g. buying, textile product development for apparel, and in various third party testing houses. Moreover, you could work in various textile industries in managerial positions including the retail and supply chain management with major clothing companies and their suppliers.
The Textile Technology pathway will allow you to gain the skills to pursue a career in any of the following fields: technical consultancy; education and training; and academic research in technical textiles. You may also be employed as a product development technologist in specialist fields such as medical textiles, geotextiles and civil engineering materials, aerospace and transport engineering materials, and sport and performance clothing.

Our areas of research are wide ranging, including sports training, performance, fatigue, nutrition, hamstring injuries, sport psychology, cardiac rehabilitation.
First-class sports facilities and State-of-the-art equipment
The School of Sport and Exercise Sciences has excellent purpose-built facilities. For exercise testing, the School has everything you would expect and more, including state-of-the-art treadmills, cycle and rowing ergometers, an isokinetic dynamometer, brain and muscle stimulators, and blood testing and gas analysis equipment, sport and exercise science laboratories, teaching and student clinics, multiple physiology laboratories, a biomechanics laboratory which is equipped with 3D motion capture cameras and force plates, two large therapy clinics and two rehabilitation gyms, a psychobiology laboratory and a respiratory clinic. We were the first university in the UK to install an anti-gravity treadmill in our rehabilitation gym. Using NASA technology, this treadmill is a valuable resource for professional athletes as they look to speed up their return to fitness. Within our neuromuscular laboratory, we have equipment for transcranial magnetic and direct current stimulation and peripheral muscle and nerve stimulation. These devices allow us to manipulate and test areas of the muscle and brain before and during exercise. Only a handful of universities in the UK have access to such state-of-the-art equipment.
We have a heat and altitude environmental chamber that can create various environmental conditions to stimulate the most extreme conditions found around the world.
The facilities at Medway Park were specified to the highest standards in order to support athletes at pre-Olympic training camps and to enable world-leading research.

Five minutes’ walk from campus, the Dockside retail outlet offers a wide range of shops and restaurants. Nearby is the town of Rochester with its historic castle and stunning cathedral, which is one of the venues for Kent’s degree congregations.
