What the course offers

Designed to help you get to the top in the field of injury rehabilitation and prevention, our British Association of Sport Rehabilitators and Trainers (BASRaT) accredited Master’s degree in Sport Rehabilitation focuses on clinical diagnostics, patient management, and the comprehensive rehabilitation of musculoskeletal issues.

Based in Bolton One, the University of Bolton’s specially designed sports and health teaching and research centre, this practically-focused course covers injury diagnostics, specialised early and late stage rehabilitation, trauma management and movement analysis. Practical laboratory and clinical work are essential elements of the course, and we host two commercially-active facilities on campus to support this – our Sports and Spinal Injury Clinic and our Athlete Development Centre. We also work with an extensive network of partners, offering external professional placements with professional sports teams, private clinics, and orthopaedic departments.

Our dedicated team of experienced academic practitioners have worked at all levels of elite and professional sport.   • Graduates of this Sport Rehabilitation Master’s degree will be eligible to join BASRaT, and subsequently use the title of Graduate Sport Rehabilitator (GSR).

The degree provides students with the knowledge and understanding required to assess and manage musculoskeletal injuries from the acute stage through to return to sport or activity.

There is currently a high clinical demand for provision of highly skilled, autonomous and analytical therapists specialising within the field of prevention, assessment and management of sports related injuries.

This demand is from sportsmen and women, teams and clinicians currently working in the field of amateur and professional sport and this course aims to provide specialists in the field of Sport Rehabilitation to fulfil this demand.

Why St Mary’s?

The teaching staff at St Mary’s have a vast amount of experience working with athletes at all levels of competition. The structure of the course embeds clinical placements into the programme, allowing students to bridge the theory to practice gap as they progress through their studies.

It enables students to observe and work with healthcare professionals working in high level sport and clinical settings providing an insight into the demands of the profession and the roles they will fulfill upon graduating.

The degree is underpinned by a detailed understanding of physiological, biomechanical, anatomical and psychosocial principles.

Career Prospects

Graduates of the MSc in Sport Rehabilitation will be eligible to join BASRaT, the professional body overseeing and regulating the practice of Sport Rehabilitators and Trainers in this country. The 400 clinical placement hours required for BASRAT membership are included in the Evidence Based Practice and Clinical Placement module. BASRaT also has a minimum attendance requirement for lectures, practicals and seminars. To qualify for BASRaT membership students must complete and pass an Immediate Care in Sport (Level 2) course, which is included.

Sport Rehabilitation is a dynamic profession focusing on understanding, preventing and treating sport and exercise related injuries. It takes an evidence-based approach considering anatomical, physiological, biomechanical, and psychosocial factors. The course aims to provide graduates from a sports science background with the knowledge and application of the musculoskeletal system, enabling them to clinically assess and return athletes to full functional fitness through expertly developed evidence-based rehabilitation programmes. Students will develop key practical skills in our teaching clinic and world class sports science laboratories and we blend this with online technologies to enhance remote study. Intense teaching periods enable students opportunities to apply and develop their knowledge through work-based learning in our sports injury clinic. A minimum of 400 clinical hours of hands-on experience will be obtained in our Sports Therapy and Rehabilitation Clinic.

In addition, students undertake professional work placements with our partners to broaden their experience. Graduates will be eligible to join the British Association of Sport Rehabilitators and Trainers (BASRaT) (pending, subject to validation). Foundation clinical and rehabilitation skills are developed through a blended learning approach. This aim is achieved by developing independent, reflective students with an understanding of professional issues, clinical reasoning and evidence based practice, whilst simultaneously equipping them with the wide spectrum of practical skills essential to Sport Rehabilitation. The course is endorsed by the British Association of Sport Rehabilitators and Trainers (BASRaT) and students who complete the accredited MSc programme will be eligible to apply for registration with BASRaT.

The course has a strong focus on practical skills and competences and all students must complete a minimum of 400 hours of clinical placement experience; a requirement directly linked to (BASRaT) accreditation. This innovative and dynamic MSc course is appropriate for all health, social care and exercise professionals working with different patient or client groups, adults or children. Teaching, learning and assessment strategies are intended to promote an interprofessional, patient-centred and practice-focused approach to rehabilitation.

Opportunities for interprofessional learning - sharing existing and developing skills, knowledge and experience - are maximised. All teaching, learning experiences and specific assessments is focused on the individual and their rehabilitation programme. If you are not in practice, or not from a health care background, the sharing of knowledge and experience can be of particular value. To make the most of the range of experience, skills and knowledge within the group, a variety of teaching and learning strategies will be employed.

Assessment methods used within the course are varied; they are designed to be stimulating as well as academically rigorous, and are based on your learning needs, individual aims, content, and the academic standards expected for the course. Assessment is based on coursework consisting of academic and reflective essays and case studies.

The course team is committed to providing flexibility, and is exploring ways of offering blended-learning approaches.

The Sport & Exercise Psychology MSc is accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS).

It is a one-year full time (with part time routes available) programme of study designed for graduates from either Psychology or Sport and Exercise Sciences who are seeking to gain professional recognition through the BPS Qualification in Sport and Exercise Psychology (QSEP).

Graduates would therefore practice as an Accredited Sport & Exercise Scientist.

The MSc will also act as a suitable postgraduate qualification for those seeking research positions and other professions.

Within the past decade there has been a marked growth in the career opportunities available for sport and exercise psychologists (eg, working with individual athletes or clubs, teaching in further and higher education and health promotion).

Coupled with such growth has also been an increased need for appropriately qualified and accredited individuals to fill such positions.

The British Psychological Society (BPS) has developed procedures for the accreditation of suitably experienced individuals that stipulate the possession of a relevant form of postgraduate qualification.

Similarly BASES require applicants for Supervised experience to also have a postgraduate qualification in a specialist discipline. 

The MSc in Sport and Exercise Psychology therefore seeks to provide students with an opportunity to study at a postgraduate level to fulfill the initial requirements for BPS and BASES accreditation, to develop their specialist knowledge of the psychology and to increase their skills in applying such knowledge in both sporting and exercise populations.

Indicative modules

All students are required to complete six taught modules, five discipline modules and one in research methods and statistics. In addition, students will complete a research dissertation.

Teaching and assessment

Teaching is delivered in small groups and is interactive. Students are encouraged to debate topics and lead their fellow students through presentations and discussions. In a number of modules there is also a practical element to gain experience of delivering mental skills techniques and developing the skills needed for applied practice. 

Requirements for exit qualifications:

  • To gain a Postgraduate Certificate in Sport and Exercise Psychology, students need to complete three modules. Each module is assessed by the equivalent of a 4,000-word assignment.
  • To gain a Postgraduate Diploma in Sport and Exercise Psychology, students need to complete six modules. Each module is assessed by a 4,000-word assignment.
  • To gain an MSc in Sport and Exercise Psychology students need to complete six modules, and a dissertation of 12,000 words or a sport science support placement.

Course delivery

The full time course runs from the start of the academic year in September through to the following August. 

Students undertake 3 taught modules in the autumn (September to December) and spring (January to May) semester. 

The dissertation or supervised experience is conducted and completed over the summer semester (June to August). Taught classes are held on Thursdays and Fridays. 

Part-time routes are available and those wishing to complete their studies part-time should contact the programme co-ordinator to discuss the options.

If you hold the British Psychological Society (BPS) Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) this course will support you along the path to becoming a registered sport and exercise psychologist. You can choose to study to obtain GBC after completing the MSc if you decide to follow the full pathway to becoming a registered sport and exercise psychologist.

Successfully completing the course provides you with Stage 1 of the BPS Qualification in Sport and Exercise Psychology (QSEP), and prepares you for stage 2, which is required to become a registered psychologist within the division of Sport and Exercise Science.

You gain core skills in the academic and intellectual understanding and researching of sport and exercise psychology. You also begin to consider applied practice in sport and exercise settings, enabling you to be supervised and taught by registered, practising psychologists.

The course provides you with opportunities to study psychology in both a sport and exercise setting. In this setting, you consider the role of psychological interventions for sport performers, coaches and teams as well as lifestyle behaviour change, such as exercise and physical activity adoption.

Coupled with this growth there has also been an increased need for appropriately qualified and accredited individuals to fill such positions. The British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences has developed procedures for the accreditation of suitably experienced individuals that stipulate the possession of a relevant form of postgraduate qualification. The MSc in Sport and Exercise Biomechanics, therefore, provides students with an opportunity to study at a postgraduate level to fulfil the initial requirements for BASES accreditation, to develop their knowledge of the sport and exercise sciences and to increase their skills in applying such knowledge in both sporting and exercise populations.

This programme aims to provide you with further knowledge of the scientific concepts and procedures underpinning sport and exercise related musculoskeletal function, measurement, injury and treatment.

The programme will allow you to adopt a multidisciplinary approach to the scientific study of sport and exercise related musculoskeletal health and performance including anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, bioengineering, and kinesiology. You will have the opportunity to carry out in-depth and critical research in selected areas of interest.

Core study areas include orthopaedic biomechanics, neuromuscular function, physiology of exercise and sport, immediate and pre-hospital care of the injured athlete, research methods for sport and exercise, basic science and regenerative therapy, emerging technologies for health and wellbeing, motion analysis of human movement, developing computer models for sports biomechanics, sports injury, and a research project.

There is also a hypoxic environmental chamber, and analytical chemistry, respiratory testing and psychobiology laboratories. This combined research and taught masters programme provides students with a research orientated training in the practical, theoretical and applied elements of Exercise and Sport Sciences.

Optional modules make up the taught component of the course, and offer teaching, learning and experience in core disciplines of exercise and health as well as in sport. Research experience is offered in academic or industrial settings within exercise, health or sports sciences.

Course details

The MRes in Exercise and Sport Sciences is a one-year full-time masters course programme that provides students with a research-orientated training in a lively, highly interactive teaching and research environment.

This programme takes students who have a research focus, from a variety of backgrounds at entry and gives them new skills to enable them to move into further research and/or employment in a number of disciplines.

It is offered by the School of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences, in collaboration with the School of Clinical and Experimental Medicine, and Department of Nursing and Physiotherapy in the University of Birmingham Medical School.

The purpose of the MRes Exercise and Sport Sciences is to provide a strong foundation for research in exercise and sport sciences in health and disease

Course Information

The taught elements of the course will be delivered in the form of optional modules in core disciplines within exercise and sports sciences, allowing students to shape the course to their particular interest. Optional modules include: Neuromuscular performance through the human lifetime; Integrated body systems; Cardiovascular and respiratory physiology; Nutrition and metabolism in health and obesity; Psychology of physical activity promotion.

Extended research experience is offered in the shape of a six-month research project in the students chosen discipline.

The career opportunities available to sport and exercise scientists are expanding all the time. The 2012 London Olympics and increased National Lottery funding for sport has increased the number of jobs in elite level sport and public health. Many hospitals are starting to appoint specialists with exercise backgrounds to work in areas such as cardiac rehabilitation and health promotion. Clubs in a variety of different sports employ sports scientists as performance analysts, biomechanists and coaches. Other career routes include roles in the fitness and leisure industry, governing bodies, teaching, exercise prescription and testing, and sport promotion.

Practical experience is an essential element of the programme and over the course of the programme you will attain 400 hours of supervised clinical experience in a range of settings. You will benefit from hands-on experience with local sports teams. Examples of prior experiences are with Darlington Rugby Club, Middlesbrough FC and Hartlepool FC, Aquatic Rehabilitation as well as University teams, the nearby MOD Infantry Training Centre and within gyms and University Massage and Sports Injury Clinics.

Teaching

How you learn

A wide variety of teaching strategies appropriate to each module is used, including formal lectures and tutorials, seminars, online learning, practical workshops, problem-based learning, work-based learning, guest speakers and student-led research projects.

You have the opportunity to develop continuing professional development throughout all modules on the programme. The delivery of modules is via blended learning, which uses a combination of face-to-face learning and online delivery. The modules have a site in the University’s virtual learning environment (Blackboard), which adheres as a minimum to the University’s Threshold Quality Standards.

How you are assessed

Assessment methods include assignments, critical review, presentations, portfolios and practical examinations.

These methods allow you to demonstrate a critical and systematic understanding and application of the relevant curriculum. Professional and key transferable skills are also developed through these assessments. You are required to undertake appropriate research, using the skills developed in the core modules and this provides the impetus for the development of your project proposal. The sport and exercise research project module gives you the opportunity to demonstrate an appropriate standard of research and enquiry into a specialist area, selected by you, displaying an original and/or compelling study or review of that area. 

Employability

Typically graduates are employed as sports therapists and sports rehabilitators. However, you are also well prepared for employment in related areas including the health and fitness industry, sport development, research and sport science support.
