Course objectives

The course will help you acquire the necessary knowledge, understanding and skills to enable reflective management practice in a range of sport settings.
Throughout the course you will be challenged to evaluate the dynamic environment in which sport organisations in the public, commercial and voluntary sectors strive to flourish, and to apply your developing knowledge and management skills to meet the inherent sport management challenges.
Taught by staff with consultancy and research experience, this MSc reflects the current industry trends and employer needs. Your studies will include: strategic management, finance, research methods, professional practice and integrated sport management studies. You will also have the opportunity to widen or deepen your knowledge through selection of two option modules.
On successful completion you will be able to:

Delivery and assessment

Management concepts and theories will be delivered through traditional lecturing methods. Theory will be applied to practice through case study analysis, discussion with sport management practitioners, seminars and research. You will acquire ‘softer’ management skills such as problem-solving, team-working, leadership, analysis, evaluation and presentation through a range of learning activities, and which are essential if you are to become an effective manager. The course builds on existing study or industry experience to develop the knowledge and skills required for personal and professional development. It equips you for a career in sport management by giving you an in-depth understanding of core aspects of business and finance and building soft skills such as leadership and team working, all underpinned by the latest research in sport management.

Your studies are made up of eight assessed modules, which include an industry-based research project in which you work with sport organisations to develop solutions to problems or explore potential market opportunities. Full-time – one year – two days a week with four taught modules each semester followed by a project

Before you start the course, we supply you with an induction pack that includes a reading list to introduce you to the general management and specialist modules. We also run an induction programme to prepare you for the course.

During the induction we assess your existing study, IT and language (for international students) skills. This assessment leads to an individual learning plan to improve and develop your skills. We also provide language tuition as needed, if your first language is not English. Dissertation workshops help you to prepare for your dissertation.

The course focuses on topics such as the study of sport politics; sport development in international contexts; leadership and entrepreneurship; project management and sport and the law. The intention is that students will develop the core skills that are needed and can be applied in ‘real-world’ settings.

This programme seeks to prepare students for work in the leisure industry, including HE sports, sports agencies and local authorities by developing high quality graduates in a research active environment. It is expected that students taking the programme will develop the skills to allow them to critically evaluate new developments/theory and integrate this knowledge where appropriate into their professional practice.

The MSc Sport Management has therefore been developed for those with aspirations towards senior or line management positions within the core functional departments of the sports management industry.

At UCFB we bridge the gap between academia and business. Students on our taught postgraduate programmes have significantly more contact time than those at traditional higher education institutions. In parallel to the academic curriculum runs the Complementary CurriculumTM; a journey of professional and personal development through learning and knowledge enhancement activities. Financial and Human Capital Management
This module develops students’ understanding of the ways in which financial and management information can be used to achieve competitive advantage. The module also examines the evolution of human resource management, human capital management, and their interaction with accounting and finance.

Strategic Sports Marketing Management
This module addresses the importance of marketing plans to sporting clubs and organisations and helps to develop well-informed strategic marketing plans, while critically appraising the range of academic material that is available to the sports marketer. While the module addresses practical aspects of marketing and takes account of the latest developments in social media and communication with customers, the main emphasis is on strategic marketing management and will require students to devise a plan and suggest ways of allocating their marketing budget.

Sustainable Stadium and Event Management
To explore current and future issues around sustainable sports management. The course uses the concept of sustainability to explore key contemporary issues such as: Types of sports venues, construction and refurbishment, venue design, event delivery, stakeholder management, venue marketing, and venue management. Each topic will include a balance between the establishment of a theoretical base, and the investigation of practical case-studies.

Leadership and Influence in Sport
The aim of this module is to understand the conceptualisation of leadership within the sporting and business world via the drivers of influence, mutuality and future.

Aims:
· Review different theories of leadership and their relevance to leadership practice, thus allowing learners to analyse critical incidents to judge organisational leadership performance.
· Understand how the role and nature of the organisation affects the leadership knowledge, skills and behaviour needed by senior leaders, while taking responsibility for own personal development and effectiveness in the leadership role.

Corporate Strategy in a Sporting Context
In order to be an effective sport manager, it is essential to possess a comprehensive and systematic understanding of the importance of corporate strategy in management, and to demonstrate how this can be applied in the area of international football and sporting management. Students will extend research skills alongside new analytical techniques in order to analyse the business environment. Students will be expected to show a critical awareness of how to carry out complex analysis of this information and explain the current strategic position of the organisation.

Current Themes in Sports Law
Sport is big business but the right to exploit its commercial value is not unfettered. This module explores how, under English and European Union law, an event organiser is able to exploit the commercial value of sport whilst also protecting its rights from infringement by third parties.

The module places this legal discussion in a multi-disciplinary context by examining the historical commercialisation of sport and how that contributed to the juridification of the sector and why and how some sports adopted various business models, for example the development of the Premier League and the Champions League. The module examines whether the specificities of sport preclude the application of UK and EU law to these business practices or whether the law should treat sport in the same way as any other economic activity.

Dissertation and Research Methods
The individual research project focuses on producing an in depth piece of work which has theoretical/ practical/ industrial/commercial relevance to the sports industry. Ideally, this will be a piece of industry sponsored work to produce a commercial output for the sponsor. The work need not be sports-related but mat be applied in the area of sports.

Research Methods and Dissertation
The dissertation allows you to design and conduct an independent piece of academic research, providing an opportunity to develop and demonstrate advanced scholarship skills. This combined research methods and dissertation module provides subject-specific methods training in preparation for the completion of a dissertation within the domains of marketing, entrepreneurship and leisure management. The research topic that you select must align with the title of the programme on which you are enrolled. The module begins with a series of taught research methods sessions, during which a research proposal is produced. This proposal then guides the development of a clearly defined and evidenced study purpose, a critical review of the extant literature, and a robust methodology. Data is then collected, analysed, interpreted and applied to the study purpose, and a 15-20,000-word research report (dissertation) is produced.

Madrid Experience

During the months of May, June and July, students will enjoy the truly unique opportunity to live and learn in Madrid, Spain’s capital city and home to the 10-time European football champions, Real Madrid. Whilst undertaking a 30 ECTS credit Diploma in Sport Management at the Real Madrid Graduate School – which students would earn in addition to the MSc International Sport Management degree – the invaluable learning enhancement experience is expected to provide a further foundation for employability prospects in the global sport marketplace.
