Work Placement

The work placement has two components, and occurs across industry sectors including professional sport associations, community and amateur sport governing bodies, and private sector sport organizations. The placement provides valuable experience and industry contacts. During the placement, you will work closely with a placement supervisor to develop job skills that are needed for future employment success. The first component of the placement is concurrent with coursework and is a minimum of 210 hours. The second component of the placement is six weeks in length and a minimum of 35 hours per week.

Your Career

Upon graduation, you will be prepared to begin working as a sport business professional. Employment opportunities exist in professional sport, amateur sport, sporting goods, sport facilities, college and university sport, sport communications, event management, and sport marketing.

This programme is designed for individuals who wish to improve their impact and effectiveness in leading and managing individuals, teams, and organisations within the sport business industry. Students will immerse themselves in the business of sport, enhancing their leadership capacity and business acumen in relation to the complex and rapidly emerging global sport business environment.

The programme recognises that contemporary leadership and management are multifaceted and there is a need to draw upon numerous perspectives to have an impact in the current international sport business environment. This course is designed to introduce and bring together theories, styles and philosophies of leadership, provide an extensive understanding of business practices, and their practical application in the context of sport.

Developmental themes embedded within the programme relate to team work, sustainability, critical reflection, management development and leadership construction. ​Course Content​​

Drawing on management and leadership perspectives, the programme critically examines the sport and leisure industry, its environment ad current challenges. There is a clear focus on applied and experiential learning. This is achieved by drawing extensively on sports organisations operating across all sectors of the industry and on using external speakers who are experts in their field to bring real life issues and challenges into the classroom. A high quality experience is provided with teaching undertaken in small groups and an emphasis on interaction and group work.

All students study five core modules which embrace key management and leadership topics as well as research skills and developing a personal leadership plan. There is one option module and students can decide whether to undertake this or an alternative independent piece of work. Completion of the MA requires students to undertake a sustained project either a traditional dissertation or a Final Project. The 'live' Final Project is a further unique feature available to those with appropriate experience.

Core Modules:
- Principles for Management and Leadership (20 credits): This is an introductory module that considers three principal themes: 1) management and leadership principles, 2) Overview of sport and sport policy in the UK, 3) governance arrangements for modern sports organisations.

- Leadership and Entrepreneurship (20 credits): This module focuses on developing an understanding of what leadership and entrepreneurship is and draws extensively on the experience of leaders working in sport and / or related fields.

- Organisational Strategy (20 credits): This introduces the concept of strategy and analyses the external and internal environment. Other features of the module include: marketing and brand management as a way of positioning an organisation; organisational change; stakeholders; culture and politics.

- Personal Skill and Leadership Development (20 credits): This module aims to focus on you as the student learner, your ability to be a reflective practitioner and identify your personal/professional needs. It also focuses on peer mentoring which has direct relevance to the cohort working together.

- Research Skills for Management and Leadership (20 credits): This module aims to hone students' understanding of research. It focuses on developing critical awareness and reading skills. It also considers the role of research as relevant to modern organisations.

Option Module:
Students have the choice of:
- Improving Business Performance (20 credits): This module develops a critical understanding of why organisations must consider organisational performance and what tools there are to assist in this process. Students are challenged to look at their own organisation and develop a critical approach to developing performance;

- Independent Choice (20 credits): This module provides students with the option of studying an area of particular interest. This may relate specifically to the sport environment (disability, community development, partnership) or it may relate specifically to a management/leadership subject area (finance, marketing, IT, etc).

On successful completion of the taught modules (above) students may undertake the Final Project (equivalent of 3 modules / 60 credits) that leads to the award of MA: Sport Management and Leadership.​​

Assessment

Assessment varies from essays to presentations and plans with students critically evaluating and reflecting on specific issues. The contact teaching time for each 20 credit module is four days with some additional days allocated for induction and presentations.

Employability & Careers​

The programme is directed towards employability both in terms of developing and enhancing the careers of those already working in the sport sector and preparing immediate graduates and those seeking a change in their career to be competitive in the employment market. There is an emphasis on developing personal management and leadership skills and we encourage students to work together to develop and hone these.

Course objectives

The course will help you acquire the necessary knowledge, understanding and skills to enable reflective management practice in a range of sport settings.

Taught by staff with consultancy and research experience, this MSc reflects the current industry trends and employer needs. Delivery and assessment

Management concepts and theories will be delivered through traditional lecturing methods. Theory will be applied to practice through case study analysis, discussion with sport management practitioners, seminars and research. The course focuses on topics such as the study of sport politics; sport development in international contexts; leadership and entrepreneurship; project management and sport and the law. The intention is that students will develop the core skills that are needed and can be applied in ‘real-world’ settings.

This programme seeks to prepare students for work in the leisure industry, including HE sports, sports agencies and local authorities by developing high quality graduates in a research active environment. It is expected that students taking the programme will develop the skills to allow them to critically evaluate new developments/theory and integrate this knowledge where appropriate into their professional practice.

Graduates of the programme will be developed as lifelong learners with a conceptual understanding of the theories behind sport policy and management.

The MSc Sport Management has therefore been developed for those with aspirations towards senior or line management positions within the core functional departments of the sports management industry.

At UCFB we bridge the gap between academia and business. Students on our taught postgraduate programmes have significantly more contact time than those at traditional higher education institutions. This module develops students’ understanding of the ways in which financial and management information can be used to achieve competitive advantage. The module also examines the evolution of human resource management, human capital management, and their interaction with accounting and finance.

Strategic Sports Marketing Management
This module addresses the importance of marketing plans to sporting clubs and organisations and helps to develop well-informed strategic marketing plans, while critically appraising the range of academic material that is available to the sports marketer. While the module addresses practical aspects of marketing and takes account of the latest developments in social media and communication with customers, the main emphasis is on strategic marketing management and will require students to devise a plan and suggest ways of allocating their marketing budget.

Sustainable Stadium and Event Management
To explore current and future issues around sustainable sports management. The course uses the concept of sustainability to explore key contemporary issues such as: Types of sports venues, construction and refurbishment, venue design, event delivery, stakeholder management, venue marketing, and venue management. Each topic will include a balance between the establishment of a theoretical base, and the investigation of practical case-studies.

Leadership and Influence in Sport
The aim of this module is to understand the conceptualisation of leadership within the sporting and business world via the drivers of influence, mutuality and future.

Aims:
· Review different theories of leadership and their relevance to leadership practice, thus allowing learners to analyse critical incidents to judge organisational leadership performance.
· Understand how the role and nature of the organisation affects the leadership knowledge, skills and behaviour needed by senior leaders, while taking responsibility for own personal development and effectiveness in the leadership role.

Corporate Strategy in a Sporting Context
In order to be an effective sport manager, it is essential to possess a comprehensive and systematic understanding of the importance of corporate strategy in management, and to demonstrate how this can be applied in the area of international football and sporting management. Students will extend research skills alongside new analytical techniques in order to analyse the business environment. Students will be expected to show a critical awareness of how to carry out complex analysis of this information and explain the current strategic position of the organisation.

Current Themes in Sports Law
Sport is big business but the right to exploit its commercial value is not unfettered. This module explores how, under English and European Union law, an event organiser is able to exploit the commercial value of sport whilst also protecting its rights from infringement by third parties.

The module places this legal discussion in a multi-disciplinary context by examining the historical commercialisation of sport and how that contributed to the juridification of the sector and why and how some sports adopted various business models, for example the development of the Premier League and the Champions League. The module examines whether the specificities of sport preclude the application of UK and EU law to these business practices or whether the law should treat sport in the same way as any other economic activity.

Dissertation and Research Methods
The individual research project focuses on producing an in depth piece of work which has theoretical/ practical/ industrial/commercial relevance to the sports industry. Ideally, this will be a piece of industry sponsored work to produce a commercial output for the sponsor. The work need not be sports-related but mat be applied in the area of sports.

Your studies are made up of eight assessed modules, which include an industry-based research project in which you work with sport organisations to develop solutions to problems or explore potential market opportunities. You also have the option to complete a 12 week work placement, where you receive support and advice from a placement mentor. Before you start the course, we supply you with an induction pack that includes a reading list to introduce you to the general management and specialist modules. This assessment leads to an individual learning plan to improve and develop your skills. We also provide language tuition as needed, if your first language is not English. Dissertation workshops help you to prepare for your dissertation.

Research Methods and Dissertation
The dissertation allows you to design and conduct an independent piece of academic research, providing an opportunity to develop and demonstrate advanced scholarship skills. This combined research methods and dissertation module provides subject-specific methods training in preparation for the completion of a dissertation within the domains of marketing, entrepreneurship and leisure management. The research topic that you select must align with the title of the programme on which you are enrolled. The module begins with a series of taught research methods sessions, during which a research proposal is produced. This proposal then guides the development of a clearly defined and evidenced study purpose, a critical review of the extant literature, and a robust methodology. Data is then collected, analysed, interpreted and applied to the study purpose, and a 15-20,000-word research report (dissertation) is produced.

Madrid Experience

During the months of May, June and July, students will enjoy the truly unique opportunity to live and learn in Madrid, Spain’s capital city and home to the 10-time European football champions, Real Madrid. -For unemployed and underemployed* graduates living in the East London Growth Boroughs of Hackney, Newham, Tower Hamlets or Waltham Forest
-Award value: 100% off your tuition fees
-We are joining forces with The London Legacy Development Company to offer a two day programme of specialist support for graduates, including workshops, skills seminars and networking opportunities to increase students' employability and support those looking to enter into postgraduate education.
-Eligibility: At the end of the programme, eight students will be selected for a 100% scholarship to study a masters course of their choice at our London campus in September 2017.

Dean's Award for Enterprise
-For students looking for the skills and support to launch a new business
-Award value: 90% off fees to launch your business idea
-Eligibility: The award will be given at the discretion of the Dean and the Senior Leadership Team, based on a one-page submission of your business idea.

East London Community Scholarship
-For any students who obtained their GCSE’s or A-levels (or equivalent qualifications) from The Growth Boroughs – Barking and Dagenham, Greenwich, Hackney, Newham, Tower Hamlets and Waltham Forest
-Award value: 50% off your tuition fees

The Business Management in Sport MSc will explore the evolving and multi-faceted area of management in sport through core modules from business and bespoke sport modules.
This programme focuses on governance structures, ethical considerations, major competitions, sports marketing and sport’s political, social, economic, and cultural contexts.
You will develop knowledge of business management and sport on local, national, international and global levels to prepare for a career in the sector. You may choose to pursue a career within governing bodies, federations, clubs, sponsors, marketing organisations, the media, local and central government or legacy and heritage organisations.
There are also ways for you to tailor your university experience to your interests. You will have opportunities to get involved with a #DMUglobal experience and choose a language study option.

Teaching and Assessment

You will be taught through a combination of lectures, tutorials, seminars, group work and self-directed study. Assessment is through coursework (presentations, essays and reports) and usually an exam or test.
Your precise timetable will depend on the optional modules you choose to take, however you will normally attend around 15 hours of timetabled taught sessions (lectures and tutorials) each week. We expect you to undertake at least 15 further hours of independent study to complete project work and research.

A degree in Business Management and Sport will open up a wide range of career opportunities within sports management industries as you develop a broad base of skills that are in demand with global employers.
Students may choose to progress to careers in governing bodies, federations, clubs, sponsors, marketing organisations, the media, local and central government, events and legacy and heritage organisations.
