It offers flexibility with an innovative combination of block and online delivery, making it suitable for those working in the sports sector and recent graduates who are looking to develop their knowledge and understanding of this fast growing and important industry.

Spectator and participatory sport is a global phenomenon and has recently become one of the fastest growing economic sectors for both developed and developing countries. Through engaging with and analysing the commercial, media and political drivers of change, you are able to identify the factors that have created such growth and critically discuss the implications for business, society, nation branding and identity.

Sport is a sophisticated and complex international business with billions of consumers watching and engaging with sporting events on a weekly or even daily basis. This course aims to develop professionals in the provision, promotion and marketing of sport who are able to fully capitalise on the opportunities that the sector presents.

Through studying marketing, sponsorship, media and law – and after spending time in a sports organisation on a professional work placement – you gain academic understanding and practical knowledge of the issues involved in successful sport business management. This will help you to engage, manage and shape the sport businesses of the future.

This course can only be studied with our partner in The Netherlands, the Wittenborg University of Applied Sciences. The course is taught in English and delivered by academics from both the University of Brighton and the Wittenborg University of Applied sciences.

Course structure

You will experience a dynamic blend of academic study, research and – through the placement module – hands-on learning. The combination of academic study and practical analysis has been designed to provide greater depth of knowledge and future career success.

Course delivery:

The emphasis of the course is on using a theoretical approach to analyse and evaluate the Sport Business sector. If you are already working in the sector you’ll be able to use your existing knowledge to underpin your studies, whilst if you are a recent graduate there is the opportunity for more supported learning.

All core modules are taught in intensive blocks of two to three days. Depending on the module this could include a combination of university-based teaching, online seminars, tutorial support and webinars. The Professional Enquiry module is a combination of teaching and online tutorials which will support you during an organisational experience or project. Some optional modules will be delivered entirely online and others will be all classroom based.

The flexibility of the teaching method for the Sport Business Management MSc facilitates combining studying for a masters with a professional career. It also means that your commitment to attending the university’s campus may be different from others studying the same course.

Syllabus

A distinctive feature of the course is the flexibility and choice of your final project. Guided and supported by your personal supervisor, you have several options available to you. Whether an academic dissertation or an applied piece of research, such as a business or enterprise project, the final project allows you to pursue an area of particular interest and helps you to build knowledge and skills for your future career.

The course will address contemporary issues recognised as the major challenges and opportunities for sport business management. This includes researching the complex relationships between sports business and governing bodies, pressure groups and government agencies, and analysing the mechanisms by which sport generates revenue through TV and media rights, gate receipts, sponsorship and merchandise.

Core management studies involving strategy, marketing, sponsorship, operations management, finance, law and human resources are integrated within various compulsory modules that make up the core of the course. You can study areas of personal interest through two optional modules.

Professional experience

Professional-Based Learning Module:

All credit-based postgraduate courses at the School of Sport and Service Management offer the Professional-Based Learning module.

The module offers you an opportunity to undertake practical experience in a work environment and gain invaluable first-hand knowledge. It is designed to help you engage with the process of planning and delivering expertise in practice, and to reflect upon and take steps to improve your academic, personal and professional skills.

In Semester 1 (September–January) you will have classes on CV development, interview skills, target setting, reflective practice and experiential learning, leading to 100 hours of professional experience in Semester 2 (February–June). This experience could take the form of a part-time job, an unpaid internship, a volunteering opportunity in the university or time as a mentee in your chosen industry. You can also take this module as part of a live consultancy in connection with one of your tourism, sport, hospitality or event modules, either in the UK or a School of Sport and Service Management project overseas.

Our school-based Employability Hub will be on hand to assist you in securing an experience that best meets your career goals and aspirations. Professional experience will enhance your practice and academic knowledge, and many of our students have started their careers with their placement organisation.

Employment prospects

Management positions exist within marketing, sales, planning, sports events, sport administration and facility management. Organisations that offer these positions include professional sport clubs, sport governing bodies, sport public agencies, sport community recreation departments, sporting goods companies, sport marketing agencies, sport event organisers, health and leisure clubs and athletic service organisations.

The intention is that students will develop the core skills that are needed and can be applied in ‘real-world’ settings.

This programme seeks to prepare students for work in the leisure industry, including HE sports, sports agencies and local authorities by developing high quality graduates in a research active environment. Organised by the International Centre for Sport Studies (CIES) in partnership with three universities, De Montfort University in Leicester (England), SDA Bocconi School of Management in Milan (Italy) and the University of Neuchâtel (Switzerland), and endorsed by the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), the FIFA Master in Management, Law and Humanities of Sport was created to promote management education within the sports world. It has developed to become a top graduate programme developing all-round managers who can cope with the increasingly complex world of sport.


A unique programme

The FIFA Master takes its graduates on a unique journey through three different European countries to study sport. Three distinguished universities in England, Italy and Switzerland, which are among Europe's most sports oriented countries, have come together to provide a ten month programme that combines top-class academic teaching and practical case studies supplemented by guest lecturers and field visits. The course focuses on three key and inter-related aspects of sport humanities, management and law.

It is aimed at law graduates, law practitioners, sports administrators and sports agents. You learn the important elements of assistance, advice and representation in sporting relationships and you gain an expertise in unlocking and resolving sporting disputes, as well as understanding the regulation of sporting activities and relationships.

The programme offers 3 unique pathways of • anti-doping law • football law • international sports marketing and sponsorship. You gain an insight into the practice and procedure of sports law with an emphasis on the practical elements of unlocking complex sporting disputes.

Experts guide you through the practice and procedure of the highest and most important sports law forums, such as the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), FIFA’s Dispute Resolution Chamber (DRC), UK Anti-Doping and many others.

Emphasis is given to case studies, with a continuous analysis of the practical aspects of sports law. You analyse important current cases with your tutors and you are offered the opportunity to work with them in real-life sporting scenarios. The MSc Sport Management has therefore been developed for those with aspirations towards senior or line management positions within the core functional departments of the sports management industry.

Financial and Human Capital Management
This module develops students’ understanding of the ways in which financial and management information can be used to achieve competitive advantage. The module also examines the evolution of human resource management, human capital management, and their interaction with accounting and finance.

Strategic Sports Marketing Management
This module addresses the importance of marketing plans to sporting clubs and organisations and helps to develop well-informed strategic marketing plans, while critically appraising the range of academic material that is available to the sports marketer. While the module addresses practical aspects of marketing and takes account of the latest developments in social media and communication with customers, the main emphasis is on strategic marketing management and will require students to devise a plan and suggest ways of allocating their marketing budget.

Sustainable Stadium and Event Management
To explore current and future issues around sustainable sports management. The course uses the concept of sustainability to explore key contemporary issues such as: Types of sports venues, construction and refurbishment, venue design, event delivery, stakeholder management, venue marketing, and venue management. Each topic will include a balance between the establishment of a theoretical base, and the investigation of practical case-studies.

Leadership and Influence in Sport
The aim of this module is to understand the conceptualisation of leadership within the sporting and business world via the drivers of influence, mutuality and future.

Aims:
· Review different theories of leadership and their relevance to leadership practice, thus allowing learners to analyse critical incidents to judge organisational leadership performance.
· Understand how the role and nature of the organisation affects the leadership knowledge, skills and behaviour needed by senior leaders, while taking responsibility for own personal development and effectiveness in the leadership role.

Corporate Strategy in a Sporting Context
In order to be an effective sport manager, it is essential to possess a comprehensive and systematic understanding of the importance of corporate strategy in management, and to demonstrate how this can be applied in the area of international football and sporting management. Students will extend research skills alongside new analytical techniques in order to analyse the business environment. Students will be expected to show a critical awareness of how to carry out complex analysis of this information and explain the current strategic position of the organisation.

Current Themes in Sports Law
Sport is big business but the right to exploit its commercial value is not unfettered. This module explores how, under English and European Union law, an event organiser is able to exploit the commercial value of sport whilst also protecting its rights from infringement by third parties.

The module places this legal discussion in a multi-disciplinary context by examining the historical commercialisation of sport and how that contributed to the juridification of the sector and why and how some sports adopted various business models, for example the development of the Premier League and the Champions League. The module examines whether the specificities of sport preclude the application of UK and EU law to these business practices or whether the law should treat sport in the same way as any other economic activity.

Dissertation and Research Methods
The individual research project focuses on producing an in depth piece of work which has theoretical/ practical/ industrial/commercial relevance to the sports industry. Ideally, this will be a piece of industry sponsored work to produce a commercial output for the sponsor. The work need not be sports-related but mat be applied in the area of sports.

The LLM is studied by distance learning and is fully assessed by coursework and a dissertation. The distance learning mode involves optional attendance at Leicester De Montfort Law School, for a maximum of ten Saturday study days during the period of study. The course is structured in a way that allows you to exit at one of several points, if desired, each with a postgraduate award.

The course will develop and enhance students’ business management knowledge and skills in areas such as marketing, HRM, finance and enterprise, strategy and economics. It is completely taught within the sport context by staff with sport management and consultancy experience. INDUSTRY LINKS

The School of Sport, Tourism and The Outdoors has strong links with a large number of sports organisations, including professional sports teams, public and private sector sports providers and grassroots sports clubs. We regularly invite in guest speakers from industry to speak to students within the modules on this course. This represents a valuable opportunity for students to meet potential employers and learn about life in the sports industry. For example, we have had guest lectures given by representatives of Wigan Warriors Rugby League Club, Bolton Wanderers Football Club, St Helens Rugby League Club, David Lloyd Leisure and Preston City Council.

The course team are currently working with the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity as part of their consultation on accreditation of HE courses.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT

The teaching and learning environment will be interactive and challenging. It is organised to ensure that key concepts, theories and, where appropriate, practices relevant to business and management in the sports industry form a central role in the student’s learning. Throughout the programme students will engage in a range of learning activities including lectures, seminars, debates, case studies, presentations and group work.

The staff on the programme are friendly and supportive and they also have considerable experience, both within higher education and working in the sports industry. This means that learning is stimulating, creative and challenging.

Assessment on each of the modules is designed to maximise the students’ learning in relation to both subject-specific knowledge and understanding and wider skills, including communication, problem solving and teamwork. Assessment types include reports, consultancy projects, essays, oral and multimedia presentations, debates and a dissertation.
