You will develop knowledge and skills in areas such as the structure and functionality of the Canadian sport industry, marketing, sales, sponsorship, economics and finance, event planning, and management. Upon successful completion of the program, a graduate will:

Work Placement

The work placement has two components, and occurs across industry sectors including professional sport associations, community and amateur sport governing bodies, and private sector sport organizations. The placement provides valuable experience and industry contacts. During the placement, you will work closely with a placement supervisor to develop job skills that are needed for future employment success. The first component of the placement is concurrent with coursework and is a minimum of 210 hours. The second component of the placement is six weeks in length and a minimum of 35 hours per week.

Your Career

Upon graduation, you will be prepared to begin working as a sport business professional. Employment opportunities exist in professional sport, amateur sport, sporting goods, sport facilities, college and university sport, sport communications, event management, and sport marketing.

Full time – 1 year – two days a week with four taught modules each semester followed by a project.
Part time – typically 2 years – tailored to your needs where possible and normally one day a week.

Most teaching is in small groups of typically less than 20 people, allowing for close interaction between students and academic staff.

Before you start the course, we supply you with an induction pack that includes a reading list to introduce you to the general management and specialist modules. We also run an induction programme to prepare you for the course. During the induction we assess your existing study, IT and language (for international students) skills. This assessment leads to an individual learning plan to improve and develop your skills. We also provide language tuition as needed, if your first language is not English. Dissertation workshops help you to prepare for your dissertation.

Assessment: coursework assignments, essays, management projects, problem solving exercises, group work, project, phase tests.

The MSc Sports Business Management is designed to enable students to make a significant contribution to the dynamic and complex global sports industry. The course will develop and enhance students’ business management knowledge and skills in areas such as marketing, HRM, finance and enterprise, strategy and economics. It is completely taught within the sport context by staff with sport management and consultancy experience. Graduates of the programme have gone on to work for a range of UK and international sports organisations including: leisure trusts, local authorities, consultancies, commercial sport providers, sports governing bodies and professional sports clubs. INDUSTRY LINKS

The School of Sport, Tourism and The Outdoors has strong links with a large number of sports organisations, including professional sports teams, public and private sector sports providers and grassroots sports clubs. We regularly invite in guest speakers from industry to speak to students within the modules on this course. This represents a valuable opportunity for students to meet potential employers and learn about life in the sports industry. For example, we have had guest lectures given by representatives of Wigan Warriors Rugby League Club, Bolton Wanderers Football Club, St Helens Rugby League Club, David Lloyd Leisure and Preston City Council.

The course team are currently working with the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity as part of their consultation on accreditation of HE courses.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT

The teaching and learning environment will be interactive and challenging. It is organised to ensure that key concepts, theories and, where appropriate, practices relevant to business and management in the sports industry form a central role in the student’s learning. Throughout the programme students will engage in a range of learning activities including lectures, seminars, debates, case studies, presentations and group work.

The staff on the programme are friendly and supportive and they also have considerable experience, both within higher education and working in the sports industry. This means that learning is stimulating, creative and challenging.

Assessment on each of the modules is designed to maximise the students’ learning in relation to both subject-specific knowledge and understanding and wider skills, including communication, problem solving and teamwork. Assessment types include reports, consultancy projects, essays, oral and multimedia presentations, debates and a dissertation.

The master programme Health Economics consists of 120 ECTS- (European Credit Transfer System) Points and is designed as a 4-semester full-time programme. It is a consecutive master degree based on a bachelor degree within the field of health economics.
The Core and Advanced Section of the master programme Health Economics contains 48 credit points. This area covers the basics of health economics.
The Specialisation Section, where students altogether complete 36 credit points, includes seminars as well as specialisation modules in health economics and medicine.
In the Supplementary Section, at least one module from economics and/or sociology has to be completed. Furthermore, to accomplish the required 18 credit points within this section, further modules from business administration and/or medicine have to be completed.
