The course builds on existing study or industry experience to develop the knowledge and skills required for personal and professional development. It equips you for a career in sport management by giving you an in-depth understanding of core aspects of business and finance and building soft skills such as leadership and team working, all underpinned by the latest research in sport management.

Your studies are made up of eight assessed modules, which include an industry-based research project in which you work with sport organisations to develop solutions to problems or explore potential market opportunities. Our teaching team includes staff with substantial industry, research and consultancy experience, many of whom work in the University’s internationally renowned Sport Industry Research Centre.

Course structure

Full-time – one year – two days a week with four taught modules each semester followed by a project

Part-time – typically two years – tailored to your needs where possible and normally one day a week

The course is made up of eight core modules, plus a research or work-based learning project. Modules provide a broad grounding across management disciplines in sport business. Most teaching is in small groups of typically less than 20 people, allowing for close interaction between students and academic staff.

Before you start the course, we supply you with an induction pack that includes a reading list to introduce you to the general management and specialist modules. We also run an induction programme to prepare you for the course.

During the induction we assess your existing study, IT and language (for international students) skills. This assessment leads to an individual learning plan to improve and develop your skills. We also provide language tuition as needed, if your first language is not English. Dissertation workshops help you to prepare for your dissertation.

The MSc Sports Business Management is designed to enable students to make a significant contribution to the dynamic and complex global sports industry. The course will develop and enhance students’ business management knowledge and skills in areas such as marketing, HRM, finance and enterprise, strategy and economics. It is completely taught within the sport context by staff with sport management and consultancy experience. Graduates of the programme have gone on to work for a range of UK and international sports organisations including: leisure trusts, local authorities, consultancies, commercial sport providers, sports governing bodies and professional sports clubs. A strong philosophy of the MSc is to be intellectually and academically stimulating but clearly focused on the vocational needs of the industry, generating practitioners who can challenge and develop existing practices. INDUSTRY LINKS

The School of Sport, Tourism and The Outdoors has strong links with a large number of sports organisations, including professional sports teams, public and private sector sports providers and grassroots sports clubs. We regularly invite in guest speakers from industry to speak to students within the modules on this course. This represents a valuable opportunity for students to meet potential employers and learn about life in the sports industry. For example, we have had guest lectures given by representatives of Wigan Warriors Rugby League Club, Bolton Wanderers Football Club, St Helens Rugby League Club, David Lloyd Leisure and Preston City Council.

The course team are currently working with the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity as part of their consultation on accreditation of HE courses.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT

The teaching and learning environment will be interactive and challenging. It is organised to ensure that key concepts, theories and, where appropriate, practices relevant to business and management in the sports industry form a central role in the student’s learning. Throughout the programme students will engage in a range of learning activities including lectures, seminars, debates, case studies, presentations and group work.

The staff on the programme are friendly and supportive and they also have considerable experience, both within higher education and working in the sports industry. This means that learning is stimulating, creative and challenging.

Assessment on each of the modules is designed to maximise the students’ learning in relation to both subject-specific knowledge and understanding and wider skills, including communication, problem solving and teamwork. Assessment types include reports, consultancy projects, essays, oral and multimedia presentations, debates and a dissertation.

The Consultancy Project offers students the opportunity to apply the theoretical and practical knowledge that they have developed within the programme in a relevant, practical context. Previous students have worked on projects with a range of sports organisations, including professional sports teams, facilities, local authority and private sector providers and grassroots sports clubs.

Our Social Science Research (Sport and Exercise Science) programme provides students with a comprehensive overview of the key methodological and philosophical debates that shape the social sciences.

Our research is multidisciplinary, drawing on the full spectrum of natural and social sciences, and is focused on issues of contemporary concern at international, national and local levels. We engage in strong partnerships with leading schools, institutes and universities across the world in the research fields of sport, exercise, education, health and well-being. The broad scope of this research has led to developments in the treatment of eating disorders; improved understanding of the effects of sedentary lifestyles and the benefits of physical activity; academic support to enhance sport coaching; advice to international sport organisations and governments on policies and procedures; guidance and support for elite athletes (both able-bodied and disabled) to achieve their full potential; and the use of exercise in treating health conditions.

Recent research projects have included: the sociology of policing and police-community relations in the 2012 Olympics; levels of BAME representation in football leadership and coaching, and Sport For A Better World? - a social scientific investigation of the Sport for Development and Peace (SDP) sector.

We are ranked 1st in the UK for the overall quality of our research, and 1st in the UK for research outputs, impact and research environment (based on GPA x Volume).

The programme is in full compliance with the Economic and Social Research Council’s requirements for an MSc in Social Science Research. On completion of the course, a student will have met the training requirements for PhD funding from the ESRC, opening up the possibility of securing PhD funding from the ESRC.

Information on the Programme

The master programme Health Economics consists of 120 ECTS- (European Credit Transfer System) Points and is designed as a 4-semester full-time programme. It is a consecutive master degree based on a bachelor degree within the field of health economics.
The Core and Advanced Section of the master programme Health Economics contains 48 credit points. This area covers the basics of health economics.
The Specialisation Section, where students altogether complete 36 credit points, includes seminars as well as specialisation modules in health economics and medicine.
In the Supplementary Section, at least one module from economics and/or sociology has to be completed. Furthermore, to accomplish the required 18 credit points within this section, further modules from business administration and/or medicine have to be completed.

Research trainingWhen you begin your research, we allocate you a director of studies and one or two supervisors. Regular meetings between you and your supervisors are scheduled, with targets set for written and oral presentation of research progress.

As part of you personal, academic and professional development you undertake a training needs analysis. This identifies a bespoke programme of training you engage with during your studies such as

  • research methods training
  • computer software courses
  • research seminars
  • scientific writing courses.

Assessment

Thesis followed by viva voce examination.

The Sport Management program serves the needs and schedules of today's busy students. The curriculum consists of 36 units and classes meet one evening per week from 6:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., allowing students to complete their master’s degree in just 23 months.

Scholarships and Assistantships

Assistantships

Several departments on campus, including the Koret Health and Recreation Center and the USF Athletic Department, offer a limited number of graduate assistantships. When assistantships become available, job postings are sent to the Sport Management office, who will then share the posting with all students currently enrolled in the program.

Scholarships

We award a limited number of merit-based scholarships to incoming students. These scholarships are a one-time award and are used to cover tuition costs in a student's first or second semester of our program. These scholarships do not require a separate application; all applicants are considered during the admission decision process
