Learn how to optimise athlete performance and improve well-being and activity levels by studying the psychology behind sport at Roehampton. You will explore key factors that affect sports performance, well-being, and activity levels such as mental toughness, self-confidence, motivation, stress and anxiety, concentration, and the psychology of sport injury.
This innovative programme provides you with a thorough theoretical, conceptual and research informed grounding in the discipline of sport and exercise psychology. You will develop a strong scientific understanding of human behaviour and experience, and of the complex interactions between these. You will also enhance your understanding of relationships between the theoretical concepts and current techniques used in sport and exercise psychology assessment and support. This will include becoming familiar with the different types of approaches, assessment strategies, and psychological skills used by Applied Sport and Exercise Psychologists.
To support your professional development, this course will cover the idea of reflective practice, and codes of conduct. You will also develop an awareness and understanding of the issues, methodology and design of research within sport and exercise psychology, and gain research skills through the completion of a detailed, empirical research dissertation and benefit from the support of our staff’s wide areas of expertise.
This programme is accredited by the British Psychological Society to provide you with Stage 1 training in preparation for your professional career in Sport and Exercise Psychology. Successful completion of the course will grant access to Stage 2 training with the BPS, the next stage on the route to becoming an Applied Sport and Exercise Psychologist.
Please note that only applicants who already hold, or are eligible for, Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) of the British Psychological Society (i.e., they must have undertaken a BPS accredited undergraduate degree), OR those who plan to obtain it by subsequently completing a BPS accredited conversion course, are eligible to register for the Psychology of Sport & Exercise MSc.

In the module ‘Approaches to Psychological Support’ you will initially be introduced to the varied approaches within sport and exercise psychology, and undertake an in-depth review of the differences of the theories, looking at them in practice through a selection of case studies. Other modules, such as ‘Application of Psychological Support’, will allow you to link theory to practice, and students will have the opportunity to develop consultancy skills under the guidance/supervision of a BPS Chartered/HPCP registered member of staff.
Further modules will provide important knowledge with respect to sport performance as well as well-being and physical activity promotion. Within the ‘Psychology of Sport and Performance’ module you will gain a critical appreciation for various social processes and individual differences that influence performance. The ‘Psychology of Physical Activity, Health and Injury’ module will explore the determinants and outcomes of physical activity and inactivity and provide students with important insights towards preventing, treating and managing certain health conditions.
You will also gain insightful knowledge of contemporary issues concerning professional practice within sport psychology. The module ‘Professional Practice in Sport Psychology’ will explore the importance of ethics and reflection within your practice, whilst also exploring the challenges and opportunities that you may face when working with various athlete populations (e.g., team sport athletes, injured athletes, and young athletes).
Finally, you will have the opportunity to undertake research on your areas of specific interest for your dissertation project. During the year, you follow a coherent pathway of study to facilitate your future direction within the exciting discipline of sport and exercise psychology.

This module develops students’ understanding of the ways in which financial and management information can be used to achieve competitive advantage. The module also examines the evolution of human resource management, human capital management, and their interaction with accounting and finance.
Leadership and Influence in Sport
The aim of this module is to understand the conceptualisation of leadership within the sporting and business world via the drivers of influence, mutuality and future.
Sustainable Stadium and Event Management
The aim of this module is to explore current and future issues around sustainable sport management. The course uses the concept of sustainability to explore key contemporary issues such as: types of sports venues, construction and refurbishment, venue design, event delivery, stakeholder management, venue marketing and venue management.
Global Strategic Sports Marketing Management
Many sports brands face domestic markets that are saturated, highly competitive and with little potential to grow sales revenues, a situation that may see them fall behind in the marketplace. Their main opportunity to grow is to target overseas markets in order to attract new customers and develop new revenues streams. Many sports leagues and brands sell the television rights for their marches to media companies in deals worth in excess of £2billion, who in turn sell these rights in as many as 100 different countries.
Corporate Strategy in a Sporting Context
In order to be an effective sport manager, it is essential to possess a comprehensive and systematic understanding of the importance of corporate strategy in management, and to demonstrate how this can be applied in the area of international football and sporting management. Students will extend research skills alongside new analytical techniques in order to analyse the business environment. Students will be expected to show a critical awareness of how to carry out complex analysis of this information and explain the current strategic position of the organisation.
Globalisation of Sport Management
The rapid growth of the sport industry in recent times has led to a need for sport to be studied in a global context. With globalisation as a key concept to be addressed, this module will emphasise the need for sport to be managed effectively in order for optimal performance to be achieved. It is essential for sport managers to fully apprehend the influence of globalisation on sports and the sport industry through acquiring and applying contemporary business analysis and decision making tools.
Research Methods and Dissertation
The dissertation allows you to design and conduct an independent piece of academic research, providing an opportunity to develop and demonstrate advanced scholarship skills. This combined research methods and dissertation module provides subject-specific methods training in preparation for the completion of a dissertation within the domains of marketing, entrepreneurship and leisure management. The research topic that you select must align with the title of the programme on which you are enrolled. The module begins with a series of taught research methods sessions, during which a research proposal is produced. This proposal then guides the development of a clearly defined and evidenced study purpose, a critical review of the extant literature, and a robust methodology. Data is then collected, analysed, interpreted and applied to the study purpose, and a 15-20,000-word research report (dissertation) is produced.
During the months of May, June and July, students will enjoy the truly unique opportunity to live and learn in Madrid, Spain’s capital city and home to the 10-time European football champions, Real Madrid. Whilst undertaking a 30 ECTS credit Diploma in Sport Management at the Real Madrid Graduate School – which students would earn in addition to the MSc International Sport Management degree – the invaluable learning enhancement experience is expected to provide a further foundation for employability prospects in the global sport marketplace. With classes taught at the Real Madrid Graduate School’s facilities including the Real Madrid Sports City in the Valdebebas district of Madrid and the famous Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, students will obtain access to leading executives from the football club. The Madrid experience will provide a vital international angle on the sport business, aiding students as they work towards completing their final MSc International Sport Management dissertation in September.
If you are an experienced high performing coach working with children or adults and want to develop your expertise, or performance coach working with talent, this course enables you to further develop and apply your knowledge, skills and competencies in your sport coaching environment. The course allows you to utilise and apply cutting edge research and technologies to shape and inform your advancing sport coaching practice.
This course represents a close working partnership between British Judo, Sports Coach UK and Sheffield Hallam. The content, curriculum design, delivery and assessment methods have been developed collaboratively to ensure it meets the needs of coaches working at this level.
The course has been designed to help coaches to evidence how their developing sport coaching practice meets the expected competencies of the UKCC Level 4 master coach, working within performance coaching. Successfully completing it enables you to use this qualification to directly evidence the academic aspects of the UKCC Level 4 award.

The Centre for Sport and Exercise Science boasts one of the largest physical activity and sport-related portfolios of research expertise in the UK. It focuses on physical activity, wellbeing and performance enhancement. The centre worked closely with GB Volleyball and GB Table Tennis as they prepared for London 2012.
The course is led by Michelle Vernon-Way, an expert in sport coaching with over 20 years industry experience of bespoke development for NGB coaches.
Sheffield Hallam University is accredited by the UK Coaching Standards Group to work with National Governing Bodies of Sport to deliver a UKCC Level 4 coaching programme.
The course comprises of four learning strands which have been identified as fundamental to the development of advanced sport coaching practice. Modules are designed within these overarching strands, which are developed throughout your studies.

This course has been developed in conjunction with a number of leading sports organisations to meet their requirements of a practicing UKCC Level 4 master coach. The sport coaching industry is driven by the UK Coaching Framework and this course provides the ideal springboard to gain employment in this dynamic area.
Graduates from this course are current national and Olympic coaches or high performing coaches working in a variety of coaching contexts.
Possible progression or career routes include • high performance coach • national coach • national governing body (NGB) performance director • national governing body (NGB) director of coaching or coach education • coach mentor • academic teaching or research careers in the UK or internationally • further study for example professional doctorate or a PhD.
This course is designed for students wishing to specialise within the discipline of sport and exercise psychology, in order to gain professional training in the provision of psychological support to clients, acquire vocationally related psychological skills, develop a critical thinking approach to the existing knowledge base and conduct research, all within a science practice model. This MSc was developed in the context of the increasing professionalisation of sport and exercise psychology, the accreditation criteria for the British Psychological Society (BPS) and the need for a university level course on the island of Ireland. The MSc will provide graduates with competencies in applying interventions professionally and ethically. As such, the programme will provide students with a thorough grounding in the theory, themes, issues and practical skills that are central to the knowledge base of sport and exercise psychology. The programme is organized around 3 main themes – (1) theory-practice (2) Individual content (3) stability-change – which permeate throughout each of the taught modules. These themes are embedded to serve as a heuristic tool to enable students to apply and underpin critical thinking in the field. This thematic approach also supports and reflects the critical philosophy that underpins the programme as a whole and is central to teaching, learning and assessment. Graduates should expect to possess professional skills in consulting, advanced research skills, relevant personal skills and a deep understanding of the high performance environment.
The overarching aim of the programme is to provide a recognised level of training for aspiring professionals in the field of sport and exercise psychology by providing them with the competencies required to apply psychology professionally and ethically in sport and exercise settings. The programme has three themes at its core which influence the pedagogical outcomes throughout the modules: theorypractice; stability-change and individual-context.

Accredited by the British Psychological Society, this makes up Stage One of the training in Sport and Exercise Psychology. In order to gain the eligibility to apply for registration with the HCPC, to practise and use the protected title of Sport and Exercise Psychologist, an approved HCPC Stage Two programme needs to be completed.
Track I: Teaching/research in sport sciences and consulting;
Track II: teaching/research inpsychology and also consulting;
Track III: Clinical/Counseling services to various populations including athletes;
Track IV: Health promotion and working with clients but not necessarily athletes;
Track V: Further PhD research study.
