Applying the principles of sport and exercise biomechanics to support and enhance your understanding of human performance and injury is at the heart of this course. You will have the opportunity to examine the function and movement of the human body through laboratory data collection, employing cutting-edge technology such as 3D motion analysis, multicomponent dynamometry and neuromuscular imaging.

Your learning will be inspired by the very latest insights, and you will be supported by tutors who are engaged in research and scientific support within the areas of neuromuscular assessment and the optimisation of athletic performance. Their research was graded "internationally excellent" and "world leading" in the Research Excellence Framework 2014. They have provided support and coaching interventions for Olympic athletes. Under their guidance, you will be able to put your learning into practice working with University sports teams, professional sports clubs and elite performers.

ASSESSMENT

Modules are assessed through a mix of coursework assignments, case studies, examinations, laboratory reports and presentations appropriate to the programme. Each module is assessed through the equivalent of 4,000 words.

​The internationally recognised research expertise in the Cardiff School of Sport is uniquely combined with one of the leading centres for student sport in the UK to provide a popular MSc programme in Sport and Exercise Science. The programme is a modular pathway within the Cardiff School of Sport's Postgraduate Scheme in Sport . The flexible programme is centred on research-informed professional practice and adopts a student-centred approach to develop understanding of contemporary issues in sport and exercise through multi- and independent discipline (biomechanics, psychology & physiology) perspectives.

The programme assists students in exploring internship opportunities within applied sport science and clinical practice, and further supports student engagement within professional bodies (e.g. British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences: BASES).

The programme's core modules are centred on enhancing awareness of the professional issues and research applications associated with being a sport and exercise scientist in alignment with the informed practice of the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES).

The option modules are structured to allow students to tailor their programme based on personal interests within the respective disciplines. Students may alternatively maintain a breadth in their areas of study by combining multiple discipline-based option modules.

There are three exit points from the degree; Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education (PgC) after successful completion of three modules; Postgraduate Diploma in Higher Education (PgD) awarded completion of three core and three option modules; the MSc is awarded on successful completion of all taught elements as well as submission of a 15,000 word dissertation project.

Learning & Teaching​

​All modules, except the independent research project (dissertation) module, are 20 credit modules. Timetabled delivery for each taught module usually equals a minimum of 30 hours of time supplemented with up to 60 hours of directed study time and up to 60 hours of independent study time. Contact time is normally made up of lecture, seminars, practical laboratories/ workshops and tutorials.

Modules are usually taught through a combination of lecture, seminar and practical based sessions. Group discussions and tasks are frequently used. Student learning is supported through the use of our Virtual Learning Environment (Moodle) that provides learning resources over and above that found in the learning centre (library). All students are supported with access to a personal tutor who is usually the Programme Director of their course.

Assessment

With the exception of the independent research project (dissertation), all module assessment is based upon 5,000 words or equivalent. Assessment methods are designed to give students the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of theoretical, applied and professional practice issues and include coursework essays, needs analyses and the design of interventions, research reports, presentations and critique.

The independent research project (dissertation) can be presented either as a traditional 12,000 word thesis or in the format of a journal article.

Employability & Careers​

Many graduates of the programme are currently studying for a research degree (MPhil/PhD) in a related subject within Cardiff Metropolitan and at other UK institutions. Graduates have typically pursued careers as clinical and applied science consultants, lecturers (further and higher education) and, in the fitness and training industry. Recent graduates have also secured employment as applied sport scientists in the National Institutes of Sport (e.g. English Institute of Sport, Sport Wales), within UK academic departments and within clinical practices.

Within the past decade there has been a marked growth in the career opportunities available for sport and exercise biomechanists (eg teaching in further and higher education, World Class Support programmes). Coupled with this growth there has also been an increased need for appropriately qualified and accredited individuals to fill such positions. The British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences has developed procedures for the accreditation of suitably experienced individuals that stipulate the possession of a relevant form of postgraduate qualification. The MSc in Sport and Exercise Biomechanics, therefore, provides students with an opportunity to study at a postgraduate level to fulfil the initial requirements for BASES accreditation, to develop their knowledge of the sport and exercise sciences and to increase their skills in applying such knowledge in both sporting and exercise populations.

We provide performance support for elite athletes and competitive teams. We consistently perform well against the elite of university sport. A high number of our performance teams compete in the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) programme at the elite level.

Several teams are supported with high-level coaching, training facility support and sports science analysis. Numerous local and national sports clubs links with our student sports teams provide additional high-level playing opportunities.

You will be able to collaborate with our members of the Sport and Exercise Science Research Centre engaged in range of multidisciplinary research themes including: Neuromusculoskeletal Function through the Ages; Extreme Environments; Amputee Mobility; Performance and Well-Being; and Exercise Adherence and Health.

You will study modules that provide both the theory and hands-on application in areas such as biomechanical assessment/support techniques, neuromuscular function, and biomechanics of gait. The teaching in these modules is both in-depth and highly practical, with extensive use of laboratory facilities such as Vicon 3D motion capture system, 2D video analysis, Kistler force plates, isokinetic dynamometers, ultrasound scanners, electromyography, and neuromuscular electrical stimulator.

You will also have the opportunity to gain two weeks work placement in gait laboratories of Guys and St Thomas’s Hospital and Queen Mary’s Hospital. Through this placement our previous graduates have developed their clinical gait analysis skills and have enhanced their employability within the field of Biomechanics.

In your research dissertation, you will have the opportunity to perform focused research in a project to be developed with our staff member with the view for publication in a peer-reviewed journal.

The key modules on this course revolve around you producing a high-level independent research project, which will prepare you for higher levels of research and study.

The course begins with a research methods module which will equip you with a comprehensive understanding of different approaches to research, allowing you to choose the correct method for your project, depending on your specific area of interest. You will study key philosophical questions as to the nature of science and knowledge, and develop a critical awareness of the principles and practice of qualitative and quantitative approaches and techniques. You will also be introduced to the management of ethical issues associated with collecting and analysing data on human participants.

You will also be guided on the development of your research proposal, and be invited to attend the Sport Science Seminars Series to frame your understanding of current sport-related research.

Biomechanics is the study of the mechanical functioning of the biological system. This course applies biomechanical knowledge in both a sporting and clinical context.

The curriculum is research-led with a number of core modules being directly informed by the current research activity of staff. Extensive training is provided in laboratory-based skills and in the interpretation of biomechanical findings and there is comprehensive coverage of contemporary issues in biomechanics.

The course is taught through a mixture of lectures, seminars, tutorial support, practical sessions and workshops which encourage critical, reflective engagement with a range of theoretical and applied topics.

You will also be exposed to a wide range of research questions in biomechanics and learn how to critically appraise and interpret the literature. The diversity of assessment methods, including written coursework and oral viva assessment, are innovative and well received by students.

Technical Training in Biomechanics: provides technical training in laboratory techniques appropriate to sport and clinical biomechanics. It will enable you to develop laboratory skills including 2D, and 3D motion analysis, force analysis and biomechanical modelling so that you can collect and interpret biomechanical measurement and protocols to benchmark standards. The topic is taught in the laboratories in a hands-on, interactive manner.

Research Methods: provides mastery and expertise in quantitative research strategies, methods and techniques, specifically focussed on quantitative data so that you can undertake postgraduate research. It aims to encourage critical understanding of how quantitative data should be handled and analysed using a variety of approaches. The module enables you to develop critical analysis of statistical concepts and procedures, trains you to use statistical analysis software and extend your knowledge of the experimental and research design process.

Current Issues in Biomechanics: develops and extends your opportunity to investigate issues of current importance in Biomechanics. You will be presented with a variety of cutting-edge research topics in biomechanics applied to sport, exercise and clinical applications. You will need to read up-to-date literature in the appropriate fields and to evaluate past and current directions. Laboratory content will involve using measurement skills developed in the Technical Training module to replicate an experimental study from the literature.

Muscle-tendon mechanics: introduces the main biomechanical characteristics of human muscles and tendons and the implications for human movement, performance and biomechanical testing. The mechanical parameters and behaviour of these tissues of the human body in-vivo will also be examined in response to chronic loading and disuse to understand basic, musculoskeletal mechanisms and adaptations underpinning changes in whole-body function and performance.

Biomechanical assessment in sport and exercise: provides the conceptual and practical knowledge base that develops and extends understanding of biomechanical assessment. With continuous developments of equipment, software, and knowledge, there is a growing need for biomechanical assessment in sport and exercise. This has a role both in performance evaluation, in injury prevention, and in injury rehabilitation. You will be exposed to a large variety of tools, each time first gaining a better understanding of the theoretical framework that justifies the use of such tool.

Clinical Movement Analysis: provides the conceptual and practical knowledge base that develops and extends your understanding of clinical movement analysis. You will learn how to interpret gait analysis results in a clinical context through exposure to the current literature, specialised methods, and clinical case studies. You will also be exposed to the latest research developments in the unique area of virtual rehabilitation.

The key modules on this course revolve around you producing a high-level independent research project, which will prepare you for higher levels of research and study.

The course begins with a research methods module which will equip you with a comprehensive understanding of different approaches to research, allowing you to choose the correct method for your project, depending on your specific area of interest. You will study key philosophical questions as to the nature of science and knowledge, and develop a critical awareness of the principles and practice of qualitative and quantitative approaches and techniques. You will also be introduced to the management of ethical issues associated with collecting and analysing data on human participants.

You will also be guided on the development of your research proposal, and be invited to attend the Sport Science Seminars Series to frame your understanding of current sport-related research.

Other modules on the programme allow you to study more in-depth knowledge and gain relevant practical skill in biomechanics, psychology, and/or physiology that are invaluable for your dissertation project.

Exercise scientists

The Sport & Exercise Psychology MSc is accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS).

It is a one-year full time (with part time routes available) programme of study designed for graduates from either Psychology or Sport and Exercise Sciences who are seeking to gain professional recognition through the BPS Qualification in Sport and Exercise Psychology (QSEP).

Graduates would therefore practice as an Accredited Sport & Exercise Scientist.

The MSc will also act as a suitable postgraduate qualification for those seeking research positions and other professions.

Within the past decade there has been a marked growth in the career opportunities available for sport and exercise psychologists (eg, working with individual athletes or clubs, teaching in further and higher education and health promotion).

Coupled with such growth has also been an increased need for appropriately qualified and accredited individuals to fill such positions.

The British Psychological Society (BPS) has developed procedures for the accreditation of suitably experienced individuals that stipulate the possession of a relevant form of postgraduate qualification.

Similarly BASES require applicants for Supervised experience to also have a postgraduate qualification in a specialist discipline.

Requirements for exit qualifications:

  • To gain a Postgraduate Certificate in Sport and Exercise Psychology, students need to complete three modules. Each module is assessed by the equivalent of a 4,000-word assignment.
  • To gain a Postgraduate Diploma in Sport and Exercise Psychology, students need to complete six modules. Each module is assessed by a 4,000-word assignment.
  • To gain an MSc in Sport and Exercise Psychology students need to complete six modules, and a dissertation of 12,000 words or a sport science support placement.

Course delivery

The full time course runs from the start of the academic year in September through to the following August. 

Students undertake 3 taught modules in the autumn (September to December) and spring (January to May) semester. 

The dissertation or supervised experience is conducted and completed over the summer semester (June to August). Taught classes are held on Thursdays and Fridays. 

Part-time routes are available and those wishing to complete their studies part-time should contact the programme co-ordinator to discuss the options.

The programme will allow you to adopt a multidisciplinary approach to the scientific study of sport and exercise related musculoskeletal health and performance including anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, bioengineering, and kinesiology. You will have the opportunity to carry out in-depth and critical research in selected areas of interest.

Summary

Our programme equips you for a career in sport and exercise physiology. You will be provided with advanced knowledge based on the latest research in the theory and practice of a range of different areas in sport and exercise physiology, for the benefit of performance and health.

This inspiring degree offers a thorough theoretical, conceptual and practical grounding in the discipline. You will gain a detailed understanding of the science of sports and exercise with the focus on applied physiology. Among other things, you will study a wide variety of physiological assessment techniques, nutritional aspects of sport and exercise performance, and the physiological characteristics of the neuromuscular system with application to sport and injury. You will also be challenged to develop and publish new knowledge on a research topic of interest to you via a dissertation project.

Taught by leading experts in the field, you will develop the necessary skills to carry out your own consultancy work with a client. We also aim to provide opportunities for you to gain flexible and professional work placements through our professional networks. Placements in the past have included British Fencing, British Paralympic Sitting Volleyball, Watford FC and Queen Mary’s Hospital.

You will automatically become a part of the Sports and Exercise Research Centre, a research group committed to excellence in the field of sport, exercise and health sciences. Our research facilities have recently received over £250,000 of investment in state-of-the-art equipment located in specialist reach and teaching spaces - a physiology laboratory, walk-in environment chamber, cell-culture and wet laboratories, and a biomechanics laboratory.

Content

In this practical and theoretical taught programme, you will learn in-depth the advantages and disadvantages of adopting particular protocols and practices and consider an integrated approach to physiological assessment when working with your clients. You will study the structure and function of tissues of the musculoskeletal system, from basic scientific mechanisms to applications in sports performance, injury, disease, and treatment.

Our hands-on teaching approach will enable you to analyse contemporary assessment techniques used in the testing of exercise and sport participants, focussing primarily on those required for the assessment of the elite performer. At the same time, you will be able to develop your own laboratory reports by using theory in the completion of a client specific assessment. This will demonstrate the assessment procedure, analysis and interpretation according to your research findings.

This programme engages coaches in the process of applying theory to their practice and aims to develop reflective practitioners with the ability to effectively manage coaching problems. It offers a unique opportunity for professional and career development, focusing on applied and experiential learning within a community of practice.

​Course Content​​

The MSc Coaching Science is a pathway within the School of Sport's Postgraduate Scheme in Sports Studies (modular). Three exit points exist from the course; Certificate (successful completion of three core modules), Postgraduate Diploma (completion of four core and two option modules), MSc (completion of taught modules and dissertation).

The programme also involves a 12,000 word independent dissertation project.

Learning & Teaching​

All modules, with the exception of the independent research project (dissertation) module are 20 credit modules. Allocated teaching timetabled (contact time) delivery for such modules usually equals a minimum of 30 hours of time supplemented with up to 60 hours of directed study time and up to 60 hours of independent study time. Contact time is normally made up of lectures, seminars, and individual tutorials. Modules are usually taught through a combination of lecture type and interactive seminar where group discussions and tasks are frequently used. Student learning is supported through the use of our Virtual Learning Environment (Moodle) that provides learning resources over and above that found in the learning centre (library). All learners are supported with access to a personal tutor who is the Programme Director of the course. ​

Assessment

All module assessment is based on 5,000 word assignments or equivalent. Presentations are also assessed in some of the core and optional modules.

Employability & Careers​

Students from this course have developed careers in sport coaching, teaching, sport science support, further and higher education, and sports development. The programme also provides an excellent spring board for students wishing to progress to MPhil/PhD or Professional Doctorate study.
