The MSc in Sport and Exercise Psychology (BPS Stage 1) seeks to provide you with an opportunity to develop advanced knowledge of the discipline and to increase your skills in applying such knowledge in the context of sport performance and exercise for health and wellbeing.

The course is accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS) as a recognised stage 1 qualification for those wishing to pursue a career as a Sport and Exercise Psychologist whilst also fulfilling the requirements for graduates wishing to pursue professional training through the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES).

By studying a Chichester you will have the opportunity to become involved in the wider research and consultancy work of the department which include Sport and Exercise Psychology academics and consultants.

The Sport & Exercise Psychology MSc is accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS).

It is a one-year full time (with part time routes available) programme of study designed for graduates from either Psychology or Sport and Exercise Sciences who are seeking to gain professional recognition through the BPS Qualification in Sport and Exercise Psychology (QSEP).

Graduates would therefore practice as an Accredited Sport & Exercise Scientist.

The MSc will also act as a suitable postgraduate qualification for those seeking research positions and other professions.

Within the past decade there has been a marked growth in the career opportunities available for sport and exercise psychologists (eg, working with individual athletes or clubs, teaching in further and higher education and health promotion).

Coupled with such growth has also been an increased need for appropriately qualified and accredited individuals to fill such positions.

The British Psychological Society (BPS) has developed procedures for the accreditation of suitably experienced individuals that stipulate the possession of a relevant form of postgraduate qualification.

Similarly BASES require applicants for Supervised experience to also have a postgraduate qualification in a specialist discipline.

The MSc in Sport and Exercise Psychology therefore seeks to provide students with an opportunity to study at a postgraduate level to fulfill the initial requirements for BPS and BASES accreditation, to develop their specialist knowledge of the psychology and to increase their skills in applying such knowledge in both sporting and exercise populations.

To gain a Postgraduate Certificate in Sport and Exercise Psychology, students need to complete three modules. Each module is assessed by the equivalent of a 4,000-word assignment.

If you wish to gain practical experience as a Sport and Exercise Nutritionist there is an opportunity to complete an extracurricular training programme during the first few weeks of the course. If you complete the entire programme you will be eligible to apply for an internship. This could provide you with an opportunity to gain experience in sport science working under supervision with our University's sports teams, sporting partners and elite performers, whilst studying for a masters degree.

There are no option modules on this course as it is designed to facilitate preparation for accreditation with the Sport and Exercise Nutrition Register. We will provide opportunities for the development of your professional skills relevant to a host of work across performance sport, physical activity, exercise and health. It will also cover the key theories of sport and exercise nutrition.

Assessment

Modules are assessed through a mix of coursework assignments, case studies, examinations, laboratory reports and presentations appropriate to the programme. Each module is assessed through the equivalent of 4,000 words.

Sport & Exercise Nutrition (20 credits)
Gain a good theoretical understanding of the current sport nutrition necessary to become a good sport and exercise practitioner, studying the general principles, concepts and underpinning theory in nutrition necessary for the development of nutrition strategies.

Measurement & Evaluation in Sport & Exercise Nutrition (20 credits)
You will gain knowledge, understanding and critical awareness of measurement and evaluation tools and techniques in sport and exercise nutrition. This module will also enable you to develop a personal CPD plan and critically reflect on the process of measurement and evaluation in sport and exercise nutrition.

Ergogenic Practices & Nutritional Manipulation in Sport & Exercise (20 credits)
On completion you will be able to use contemporary research to explore the complex interactions and relationships between dietary manipulation strategies and specific ergogenic aids/food supplements on metabolism, sports performance and health.

Physiology & Biochemistry for Performance (20 credits)
You will develop a critical understanding of the metabolic and endocrine responses to different types of exercise, their time course and scope for training and detraining adaptations. It will also facilitate the development of laboratory data collection skills.

Research & Professional Practice (20 credits)
This module will equip you with an understanding of the skills and experience necessary to operate as a sport and exercise scientist in a range of professional settings.

Research Methods (20 credits)
This module focuses on the design of research projects as a way of answering questions and solving 'real world' problems in a reliable and valid manner.

Major Independent Study (60 credits)
You will complete a research project of your choosing under the supervision of a member of academic staff. Ideally you will aim to produce research of a publishable quality.

Course Overview

​The internationally recognised research expertise in the Cardiff School of Sport is uniquely combined with one of the leading centres for student sport in the UK to provide a popular MSc programme in Sport and Exercise Science. The programme is a modular pathway within the Cardiff School of Sport's Postgraduate Scheme in Sport . The flexible programme is centred on research-informed professional practice and adopts a student-centred approach to develop understanding of contemporary issues in sport and exercise through multi- and independent discipline (biomechanics, psychology & physiology) perspectives.

The programme assists students in exploring internship opportunities within applied sport science and clinical practice, and further supports student engagement within professional bodies (e.g. British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences: BASES).

​Course Content​​

The programme's core modules are centred on enhancing awareness of the professional issues and research applications associated with being a sport and exercise scientist in alignment with the informed practice of the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES).

The option modules are structured to allow students to tailor their programme based on personal interests within the respective disciplines. Students may alternatively maintain a breadth in their areas of study by combining multiple discipline-based option modules.

There are three exit points from the degree; Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education (PgC) after successful completion of three modules; Postgraduate Diploma in Higher Education (PgD) awarded completion of three core and three option modules; the MSc is awarded on successful completion of all taught elements as well as submission of a 15,000 word dissertation project.

Learning & Teaching​

​All modules, except the independent research project (dissertation) module, are 20 credit modules. Timetabled delivery for each taught module usually equals a minimum of 30 hours of time supplemented with up to 60 hours of directed study time and up to 60 hours of independent study time. Contact time is normally made up of lecture, seminars, practical laboratories/ workshops and tutorials.

Modules are usually taught through a combination of lecture, seminar and practical based sessions. Group discussions and tasks are frequently used. Student learning is supported through the use of our Virtual Learning Environment (Moodle) that provides learning resources over and above that found in the learning centre (library). All students are supported with access to a personal tutor who is usually the Programme Director of their course.

Assessment

With the exception of the independent research project (dissertation), all module assessment is based upon 5,000 words or equivalent. Assessment methods are designed to give students the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of theoretical, applied and professional practice issues and include coursework essays, needs analyses and the design of interventions, research reports, presentations and critique.

The independent research project (dissertation) can be presented either as a traditional 12,000 word thesis or in the format of a journal article.

Employability & Careers​

Many graduates of the programme are currently studying for a research degree (MPhil/PhD) in a related subject within Cardiff Metropolitan and at other UK institutions. Graduates have typically pursued careers as clinical and applied science consultants, lecturers (further and higher education) and, in the fitness and training industry. Recent graduates have also secured employment as applied sport scientists in the National Institutes of Sport (e.g. English Institute of Sport, Sport Wales), within UK academic departments and within clinical practices.

The MRes in Exercise and Sport Sciences is a one-year full-time masters course programme that provides students with a research-orientated training in a lively, highly interactive teaching and research environment.

This programme takes students who have a research focus, from a variety of backgrounds at entry and gives them new skills to enable them to move into further research and/or employment in a number of disciplines.

It is offered by the School of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences, in collaboration with the School of Clinical and Experimental Medicine, and Department of Nursing and Physiotherapy in the University of Birmingham Medical School.

The purpose of the MRes Exercise and Sport Sciences is to provide a strong foundation for research in exercise and sport sciences in health and disease.

Optional modules make up the taught component of the course, and offer teaching, learning and experience in core disciplines of exercise and health as well as in sport. Research experience is offered in academic or industrial settings within exercise, health or sports sciences.

Employability

The career opportunities available to sport and exercise scientists are expanding all the time. The 2012 London Olympics and increased National Lottery funding for sport has increased the number of jobs in elite level sport and public health. Many hospitals are starting to appoint specialists with exercise backgrounds to work in areas such as cardiac rehabilitation and health promotion. Clubs in a variety of different sports employ sports scientists as performance analysts, biomechanists and coaches. Other career routes include roles in the fitness and leisure industry, governing bodies, teaching, exercise prescription and testing, and sport promotion.

Course overview

Careers in Sport and Exercise Science can develop in at least two directions. Firstly you can help elite athletes reach their optimum sports performance. Secondly you can help the general population to improve fitness through exercise referral and community programmes.

This course allows you to specialise in both those areas, by providing you with a solid grounding in measurement, evaluation, research methods, data analysis, and sport and exercise psychology. Additionally, you will get the chance to study applied physiology, applied biomechanics or complete a personal project. The final stage is a research project that reflects your developed knowledge and skills.

Compared to undergraduate studies, this Masters has more emphasis on self-directed lab work, data collection and analysis. We encourage you to undertake real-world internships and build up experience with external clients and sports clubs. This practical experience will complement the rigorous research elements of the course.

By the end of the course you will have a portfolio of work, feedback from clients/employers, and a record of practical and academic projects. This will give you a clear advantage when it comes to applying for jobs.

Sports Medicine and Anatomy
Anatomy is taught by experienced staff in a specialist clinical lab using skeletons, anatomical models, 3D software, online material and human subjects. You will learn techniques for sports injury rehabilitation, including the use of sports massage and ultrasound equipment.

You will also examine balance and stability using our Biodex® stability and balance trainer and assess strength imbalances using our sophisticated Biodex® dynamometer and new BTE Primus® rehabilitation equipment. You can investigate how new techniques such as thermal imaging are being used in injury assessment with Flir® IR cameras.

Fitness and Conditioning Suite
In our lab, you'll find fitness and conditioning equipment that would be the envy of most modern gyms. From a wide range of cardiovascular equipment to machine and Olympic weights, you will receive hands-on teaching in a professional environment.

This course will suit you if you are a sport and exercise graduate, a graduate from a related science or a medical student looking to specialise in the field of sport physiology. It is designed to focus on professional skills that improve your employability, as you learn with state-of-the-art equipment including environmental chambers, breath-by-breath analysers, blood sampling analysers and transcranial magnetic stimulation devices.

You also again gain real-world experience in areas relevant to your interests by working alongside experienced practitioners. Past projects have included the design of individualised training programmes leading up to the Brighton Marathon and the physiological testing of elite athletes. Our teaching laboratories are accredited by the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES), as are most of our course staff. You can register on the BASES Supervised Experience Scheme yourself to achieve personal accreditation.

The course is flexible in that it allows you to exit with a postgraduate certificate at the end of one semester (three 20-credit modules) or a postgraduate diploma at the end of two semesters (six 20-credit modules). You must complete the 60-credit research project to qualify for the MSc.

You spend around 100 hours of the course with an organisation related to the practice of physiology, which will allow you to apply your academic knowledge in a vocational setting. Previous students have worked with organisations including Brighton and Hove Albion Football Club and the English Institute of Sport. You can also visit the Paris based Institute Nationale du Sport, de l'Expertise et de la Performance (INSEP), working with elite coaches, scientists, medical staff and athletes from many different fields of sport.

Many students have commenced their professional careers with the organisation that provided them with work experience.

Areas of study

In taught physiology modules, you'll experience and discuss the responses of the human body to various stimuli, including effect of environmental changes (heat and hypoxic chambers) and of ergogenic aids which can be used to simulate peculiar clinical conditions and help students understand better exercise tolerance. This novel approach to teaching integrative physiology will help you to develop a host of laboratory skills. You will be introduced to the latest in the research field of exercise physiology and will have an opportunity to write your own paper from your research project.

With modules such as Professional Enquiry, you'll also gain vocational skills to give you a competitive edge in the job market; through placement opportunities and chances to network in the world of sports physiology, you'll graduate with a foot firmly in the industry.

Teaching environment

Laboratory work
- We accept a maximum of 15 students on this course
- All classes take place in our Exercise Physiology Laboratories with a ratio of 2:3 (staff:students)
- Students work in groups of four to five on problem-based situations.

Tutorials
- Students can book individual tutorials with every lecturer offering around three hours of tutorials per week.
- Group tutorials are also scheduled in our teaching programmes.

Facilities

Our facilities include an x-m square Gym over two floors with state-of-the-art fitness equipment including a three-camera system to analyse weight-lifting actions and an isokinetic dynamometer to allow measurement of muscle strength. Our sport and exercise laboratories which are all accredited by the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES) and include:
- A Molecular genetics laboratory with biobanking
- A biomechanics laboratory with motion analysis equipment, various EMG systems, an immersive screen
- Two exercise physiology laboratories where aerobic / anaerobic endurance, power and strength assessments as well as body composition, cardiac and pulmonary screening can be carried out
- An Environmental Laboratory with purpose-built environment chamber where we can simulate different climates by controlling the temperature (-20 to +50°C) and relative humidity (20 to 95 per cent), and a 1.13m x 1.13m x 1.5 m water immersion tank
- A research-based laboratory with an oxygen-controlled chamber to simulate altitude (hypoxia)
- A biochemistry laboratory where we can analyse blood and tissue samples.

The programme -

Built on a successful and popular undergraduate programme, this high-level master’s degree helps to prepare students for a career in the sports industry by delivering hands-on professional skills and adopting an interdisciplinary approach to coaching.

During the course, students will explore key areas such as talent identification, long-term athlete development, performance analysis, strength and conditioning, peak performance, technical and tactical development, marginal gains, and injury prevention and management.

To complement their studies, students are expected to undertake work placements relevant to the course within professional sport and exercise organisations. Working at all levels, from elite athletes to schools or rehabilitation patients, students will gain valuable ‘real-world’ experience working alongside leading experts. Work placements are expected to have been organised prior to joining the course; if students have been unable to organise a placement, the University will support them in finding a suitable opportunity.

Students have full access to the University’s leading, fully-equipped sports science facilities, which boast a BASES-accredited physiology laboratory, as well as biomechanics, health and exercise, and psychology laboratories. Many of these facilities are regularly used by professional athletes, including players from Southampton FC.

Past students have benefitted from a guest speaker programme which has featured lectures from professionals from the highest level of a variety of sports, who have shared their advice, knowledge and experience of the industry.

The course team has strong industry links and the University is a partner of Southampton FC. The University also works with other top sports organisations, including Reed’s High Performance Academy, British Swimming, Hampshire Rugby, Crystal Palace FC, London Irish RFC and GB Wheelchair Rugby.

Course Content

Technical Development in Sport: On this unit you will critically analyse coaching methods and how skill is acquired, building your understanding and use of technology for developing, monitoring and testing athletic performance.

Psycho-Social Development in Sport: The aim of this unit is to analyse the theories underpinning talent identification and long-term athlete development, and to examine the psycho-social factors affecting performance throughout an athlete’s career.

Physical Preparation in Sport and Exercise: This unit examines the science behind effective training, injury prevention and rehabilitation in a practical setting. You will focus on physical and mental loading, and on the key fitness components of strength, speed, endurance and flexibility.

Tactical Development in Sport: This unit focuses on performance analysis techniques, providing practical opportunities to collect, assimilate and analyse tactical, technical and time motion information, with the aim of improving performance.

Marginal Gains for Peak Performance: This unit identifies past, current and future methods of obtaining potential marginal advantage in performance, with a chance to build first-hand experience via off-site learning.

Individual Project: The project provides an opportunity to undertake a sustained, intensive and independent investigation into a topic of your choosing, presenting your work in a peer-reviewed journal format.

Teaching, learning and assessment -

The course combines theory-led sessions with practical sessions, working individually and in groups in both the laboratory and the field. On all units you’ll work with real-life clients, in a placement either organised yourself or by members of the course team.

Work experience -

Prior to starting the course you’ll be expected to have a placement organised that will last throughout your studies; this can be in more than one organisation if required. The placement should be in a role relevant to the course, and might include (but not limited to) coach, sport scientist, performance analyst, strength and conditioning coach, exercise physiologist, biomechanist, laboratory technician, etc.

If you’ve been unable to organise a placement, the course team will support you in finding a placement, potentially with university partners Southampton FC or a range of other top sports organisations, including Reed’s High Performance Academy, British Swimming, Hampshire Rugby, Crystal Palace FC, London Irish RFC, GB Wheelchair Rugby and more.

Assessment -

Assessment will be a range of written coursework, viva, presentations, reports and practical tests.

Graduation is the ceremony to celebrate the achievements of your studies.
