Half the course takes place on a clinical placement, and Welsh Government funding may be available.

Only by completing the Postgraduate Diploma (Pg Dip) programme will practitioners be eligible to have their names recorded on the third part of the NMC register.

This MSc course offers the opportunity for nurses and midwives who have completed the PG Diploma Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (SCPHN) to gain a Masters level qualification.

The MSc programme involves a taught element (one year full-time or two years part-time), leading to the professional award of Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (Health Visitor) with subsequent registration on the Specialist Community Public Health Nurse part of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) register (Please refer to the Postgraduate diploma description). On completion of the taught stage (52 weeks / 104 weeks), students shall be eligible for a Postgraduate Diploma (exit award) OR to progress to the dissertation stage of the programme and complete the full MSc route in Specialist Community Public Health Nursing. The dissertation module has to be completed within three years of completing the PGDiploma. Students will need to seek funding for this element of the program.

Distinctive features

• Enables registration as a Specialist Community Public Health Nurse, annotated as a health visitor on the third part of the professional register.

• You will spend 50% of the course on placement (this placement may not be in their local area and you will be expected to travel).

• Funding available via the Welsh Government for students undertaking the Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (SCPHN) programme

Structure

The Postgraduate Diploma course is divided into four modules that are credit rated. Each taught module offers 30 credits and all must be successfully completed in order for students to have their name included on the third part of the professional register as a Specialist Community Public Health Nurse.

Note: A clinical practice element will account for 50% of the taught programme, which is in accordance with NMC (2004) regulations. Students are required to pass assessment in both their clinical and theoretical work in order to achieve their qualification as a Specialist Community Public Health nurse.

Each student will be allocated a practice teacher (PT) who will take accountability and responsibility for assessing the student's clinical progress, which is evidenced through a clinical portfolio.

Students who complete the programme successfully will be awarded a Postgraduate Diploma in Specialist Community Public Health Nursing and may proceed to Part 2 to obtain a Master’s Degree in Specialist Community Public Health Nursing.

The course offers includes a dissertation for those who wish to move to Masters level. The MSc in SCPHN is optional and self-funded. The dissertation involves the completion of a 20,000 word dissertation. You have three years following completion of the Postgraduate Diploma to submit the dissertation.

The course content will cover the four principles of public health practice and students will be involved in: the search for health needs; the stimulation of awareness of health needs; the influence on policies affecting health; the facilitation of health enhancing activities. The Faculty of Health and Wellbeing will be able to guide you through this process once you have been successfully offered a conditional place at the University. LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT

The course is designed for practitioners who have post-registration practice experience and bring a variety of professional and life experiences. The demands and requirements of postgraduate study require an emphasis on informal methods of learning and the promotion of independence in the planning and organisation of learning. This requires your involvement in a variety of learning and teaching approaches designed to further develop your skills of academic discourse, independent study and scholarly enquiry. These approaches may include group discussions, problem-based learning, action learning, seminars, reflection and work and web-based learning, further enhanced through a commitment to shared learning.

Assessment is through a mixture of assignments, examinations (short answers and multiple choice), viva, portfolio and practice assessment. The practice assessment requires completion of the Practice Assessment Document that demonstrates achievement of the NMC standards of proficiency for specialist community public health nurses (2004). The NMC standards will be formatively assessed in semesters one and two, whereas in the third semester you will be summatively assessed. Learning contracts will be developed in partnership with you, your practice teacher and an identified educationalist to support the achievement of the NMC standards along with individually identified learning outcomes.

The teaching, learning and assessment strategy of the course reflects its interprofessional, client-centred and practice-focused approach. Opportunities for sharing existing and developing skills, knowledge and experience are maximised. The course is centred on practice and you will spend 50% of time in the practice environment. You will be encouraged to critically analyse and evaluate SCPHN practice with your lecturers and CPTs, and your assignments will provide a focus for analysing practice. Your CPT will be responsible for facilitating your learning, supervising your progress and assessing your competence in practice.

This course is unique in nature as you will be paid full-time (or part-time) thus your attendance at university is recorded. Sickness and absence during the course will affect your sickness and absence record. Equally punctuality at university is a important part of your professional role.

The course is interesting to

  • (public) health practitioners currently working in the UK or overseas: each year, the cohort has been made up of around 60% overseas students from all over the world alongside students from a range of public health organisations in the local area. If you currently work in a public health role you can gain academic credit for work based learning in the public health practice elective
  • practitioners not in a public health role, but working in organisations with a (potential) public health remit, for example local authorities, housing associations, schools, social services, criminal justice system, voluntary and community organisations
  • practitioners working with population groups who experience inequality, for example people with disabilities, older people, asylum seekers and refugees, people who are unemployed, people with mental health conditions, people with chronic illness, and who wish to explore these communities in a public health context.
  • students who have just completed their undergraduate studies in a related discipline. In the past we have had students from social work, education, sports science, food and nutrition, nursing and a range of professions allied to medicine.

You explore the links between policy, evidence and practice and you address key questions including

You develop knowledge in the 10 key public health competencies and standards needed to join the UK Voluntary Register for Public Health specialists. This registration allows you to work at a senior level in public health.

Students are assessed using a variety of methods: reports, presentations, book reviews and essays and for all but three assessment tasks students are able to choose a public health topic and/or population group on which to focus their work. There are no examinations.

Employability

By successfully completing this course, you may find that it makes it easier to gain promotion, or enter jobs in public health departments of primary care trusts. Previous graduates have gained roles such as teenage pregnancy coordinator, health promotion specialist and five-a-day co-ordinator. Others have joined local authorities, the voluntary sector such as Agewell, and become Sure Start managers.

A number of graduates have remained in their roles as health visitors, public health nurses or midwives, working more strategically and in more depth. Overseas students have used the qualification to work successfully in their own countries. Some people have taken the course to work towards becoming a nurse consultant.

A new vision developed for District Nursing (DH 2013) Care in local communities: a new vision and model for district nursing will underpin the content and delivery of the pathway with a focus on 'Compassion in Practice' underpinning the new model focussing on:

Successful completion of the Postgraduate Diploma will lead to the NMC approved specialist and registerable qualification ‘Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (Health Visiting)’, ‘Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (School Nursing)’ or the Specialist Community Nursing (District Nursing), depending upon the route that the student registers for.

Students who have met the requirements for the award of a Postgraduate Diploma will be eligible to proceed into year 2, onto the Masters’ award – subject to the rules of progression. This post registration award prepares you for a career in Specialist Community Public Health Nursing at both strategic and operational levels. The PG Dip consists of six compulsory modules, two are practice focused modules underpinned with key theoretical concepts and run for the duration of the course enabling theory to inform practice and vice versa. A consolidating period of practice equivalent to at least ten weeks at the end of the programme is incorporated into this programme as per NMC SCPHN Standards (2004).

All modules are linked to service delivery and developments within Primary Care/Public Health and are intended to develop core skills in research, practice development, public health activity and education. 50% of the programme is in a practice environment which is commensurate with the specific annotation students are following: for example Health Visiting or School Nursing. Methods of Learning

The course comprises of 45 programmed weeks for full time students (50% of which is in practice, 50% in theory), or no more than 208 weeks for part time students which is in accordance with NMC 2004 SCPHN regulations. An initial theory (university based) induction programme is timetabled at the beginning of the course, followed by a practice induction period.

Following this induction, the course integrates both practice and theory, so for those students following the full time course, they can expect to be in practice for part of the week and at university for the remainder of the week. One study day per week is also timetabled whenever possible. There are block weeks in practice which usually occur at least once per term, and block study weeks which, wherever possible, are timetabled to coincide with preparation for assignment submission dates. The final ten weeks of the programme is spent consolidating practice as per NMC standards (2004).

Students following a part time route will, under normal circumstances, attend university for one day per week, practice for the second day and have half a day study time each week. Block weeks will be timetabled as above, but will be for two and a half days per week.

The course is delivered by a wide range of blended teaching and learning activities including lectures; enquiry based learning; online activities; workshops; tutorials and group work. Specialist practitioners and service users input into the teaching elements of the course whenever possible.

Attendance is through either a full or part time route which will be negotiated with the sponsoring Provider Service.

Assessments

This programme comprises of a range of assessment strategies which enables students to demonstrate knowledge, synthesis and analysis in a variety of forms. Assessment strategies include portfolios, exams, vivas, reports, essays, audio taped interventions and presentations alongside a practice proficiency document. The aim of the assignment programme is not only to test knowledge and skills but also to develop these skills (for instance, the ability to present to a group of people). Students can expect between one and three items of assessment per module.

Should I take the BSc (Hons) or the PgDip qualification?
Depending on the level of your existing qualifications you will either undertake the BSc (Hons) course, or the PgDip qualification. If you qualified as a nurse with a Bachelors Degree you should take this course - the PgDip. If you qualified as a nurse with an Undergraduate Diploma you should take the BSc (Hons) Occupational Health Nursing (Specialist Community Public Health Nursing) programme. The content of the courses is the same.

The degree course consists of six modules each worth 20 credit points. Of these; one is a research module and is taught across a range of primary care programmes. The remaining five are OH pathway specific. Some modules are available on a standalone basis. Timetable

Full-time students attend for two days each week studying the Role of the occupational health practitioner and Assessing risk 1 modules on one day and Assessing risk 2 on the second day of attendance.

Part-time students attend for one day each week and join the full-time cohort studying the Role of the occupational health practitioner and Assessing risk 1. This programme recruits from a wide geographical area. Past students have travelled from as far afield as Manchester, Cornwall, Norfolk and Suffolk. In order to facilitate the travel needs of such students, the first lecture of the day is scheduled to commence at 10.00am and all lectures are completed by 5.00pm.

Teaching and learning

Each module equates to 200 hours of student effort, 36 hours of which take place in the classroom. This is supplemented with blended learning initiatives including electronic learning activities and workplace visits.

Teaching consists of formal lectures, seminars, group work and field work activities including a risk assessment activity which takes place in the Palm House of Kew Gardens.

A variety of assessment strategies are used including essays, case studies, reports, a professional practice portfolio and one examination.

Placements

It is a Nursing and Midwifery (NMC) requirement that you must gain experience in the OH practice setting throughout your studies. This can be achieved through employment in an OH service or as a result of a practice placement undertaken on an unpaid basis. In order that you gain a placement appropriate to your learning needs and personal circumstances. This experience is negotiated and secured by the student.

Placements

Practice is an integral part of the programme. In the practice setting, you will work alongside a practice teacher or practice teacher and mentor from the specific sphere of practice, while completing learning activities and a practice assessment document.

You are required to undertake 15 days additional experience in an area of, or that may be of, responsibility, even if not central to the defined area of practice. This can be anywhere in the world. Past students have visited Denmark and Scotland, for example, as well as working elsewhere in London. They have worked with food banks, specialist nurses, environmental health officers and been involved in community development projects.

For the final ten weeks of the programme, you will work consistently in practice, consolidating your learning.

During your placement, you will have at least three visits from your link lecturer (who is also your personal tutor) to support learning in practice and facilitate theory- practice development.

Academic facilities

The Clinical Skills Centre at City offers excellent facilities for you to rehearse practical caring skills prior to your practice placement. You will have access to a simulated six-bed high-dependency unit (HDU) with realistic equipment including piped oxygen, call bells, medicines and emergency equipment. In addition, medium-fidelity simulators and laboratories, including a biology laboratory, allow you to rehearse skills in preparation for practice in a range of placements, including clinics and people's homes.

The School of Health Sciences is one of the first health schools in the UK to open a Technology Enabled Care Studio - City TECS. City TECS is a specially designed studio flat at our Northampton Square campus, fully equipped with the latest telehealth and telecare technologies, providing you with the unique opportunity to learn how to use the latest and future healthcare technologies while you study.

Should I take the BSc (Hons) or the PgDip qualification?

Depending on the level of your existing qualifications you will either undertake the BSc (Hons) course, or the PgDip qualification. If you qualified as a nurse with a Bachelor's degree you should take this course - the PgDip. If you qualified as a nurse with an undergraduate Diploma you should take the BSc (Hons) School Nursing (Specialist Community Public Health Nursing) programme. The content of the courses is the same.

Modules

You will normally complete all eight units, including a professional practice unit relevant to the defined pathway.

Core units:

Evaluating research for health care
A public health approach to promoting health and well-being
Developing professional practice for school nursing
Protecting vulnerable children
Mental health and well-being of families
Developing leadership and management skills for SCPHN

Optional:

Community nurse prescriber (V100)

Accreditation

The programme is accredited by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). The Nursing and Midwifery Council regulates nurses and midwives in England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Islands.

Employability

This programme is for qualified nurses who wish to further develop their professional knowledge and skills to enable them to work as health visitors in the community promoting the health of children and families or school nurses working with the school-aged population. Qualified Specialist Community Public Health Nurses may also obtain employment in the wider field of public health, for example, in community development work.

Students on the BSc programme may wish to further their studies in the field of public health. Postgraduate Diploma students may study for an MSc in SCPHN through doing a dissertation after qualifying as a SCPHN. Take a look at our online CPPD prospectus for more information about CPD options.
