The Postgraduate Diploma course is designed to prepare nurses and midwives to become Specialist Community Public Health Nurses.

It leads to the professional award of Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (Health Visitor) with subsequent registration on the Specialist Community Public Health Nurse part of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) register.

Half the course takes place on a clinical placement, and Welsh Government funding may be available.

Only by completing the Postgraduate Diploma (Pg Dip) programme will practitioners be eligible to have their names recorded on the third part of the NMC register.

This MSc course offers the opportunity for nurses and midwives who have completed the PG Diploma Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (SCPHN) to gain a Masters level qualification.

The MSc programme involves a taught element (one year full-time or two years part-time), leading to the professional award of Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (Health Visitor) with subsequent registration on the Specialist Community Public Health Nurse part of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) register (Please refer to the Postgraduate diploma description). On completion of the taught stage (52 weeks / 104 weeks), students shall be eligible for a Postgraduate Diploma (exit award) OR to progress to the dissertation stage of the programme and complete the full MSc route in Specialist Community Public Health Nursing. The dissertation module has to be completed within three years of completing the PGDiploma. Students will need to seek funding for this element of the program.

Distinctive features

• Enables registration as a Specialist Community Public Health Nurse, annotated as a health visitor on the third part of the professional register.

• You will spend 50% of the course on placement (this placement may not be in their local area and you will be expected to travel).

• Funding available via the Welsh Government for students undertaking the Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (SCPHN) programme

Structure

The Postgraduate Diploma course is divided into four modules that are credit rated. Each taught module offers 30 credits and all must be successfully completed in order for students to have their name included on the third part of the professional register as a Specialist Community Public Health Nurse.

Note: A clinical practice element will account for 50% of the taught programme, which is in accordance with NMC (2004) regulations. Students are required to pass assessment in both their clinical and theoretical work in order to achieve their qualification as a Specialist Community Public Health nurse.

Each student will be allocated a practice teacher (PT) who will take accountability and responsibility for assessing the student's clinical progress, which is evidenced through a clinical portfolio.

Students who complete the programme successfully will be awarded a Postgraduate Diploma in Specialist Community Public Health Nursing and may proceed to Part 2 to obtain a Master’s Degree in Specialist Community Public Health Nursing.

The course offers includes a dissertation for those who wish to move to Masters level. The MSc in SCPHN is optional and self-funded. The dissertation involves the completion of a 20,000 word dissertation. You have three years following completion of the Postgraduate Diploma to submit the dissertation.

The course assessment strategy is closely aligned to the teaching and learning strategy which is designed to have: immediate professional relevance; draw on expertise-by-experience; foster active learning and be leaner-centred in approach. A distinct feature of the course is the range of assessment tasks, including those that allow you to undertake workplace relevant assessments that can have an immediate impact in practice. Examples include: written assignments ranging from reflective pieces to academic essays culminating in a service improvement project, assessed practice within your placements; and a portfolio of evidence of learning in practice and a profile of the health needs of your local practice area. Assessment

The course assessment strategy is closely aligned to the teaching and learning strategy which is designed to have: immediate professional relevance; draw on expertise-by-experience; foster active learning and be leaner-centred in approach. A distinct feature of the course is the range of assessment tasks, including those that allow students to undertake workplace relevant assessments that can have an immediate impact in practice. Examples include: written assignments ranging from reflective pieces to academic essays culminating in a service improvement project, assessed practice within your placements, a portfolio of evidence of learning in practice and a profile of the health needs of your local practice area. The course assessments also include a timed, invigilated exam as this is an NMC requirement

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT

The course is designed for practitioners who have post-registration practice experience and bring a variety of professional and life experiences. The demands and requirements of postgraduate study require an emphasis on informal methods of learning and the promotion of independence in the planning and organisation of learning. This requires your involvement in a variety of learning and teaching approaches designed to further develop your skills of academic discourse, independent study and scholarly enquiry. These approaches may include group discussions, problem-based learning, action learning, seminars, reflection and work and web-based learning, further enhanced through a commitment to shared learning.

Assessment is through a mixture of assignments, examinations (short answers and multiple choice), viva, portfolio and practice assessment. The practice assessment requires completion of the Practice Assessment Document that demonstrates achievement of the NMC standards of proficiency for specialist community public health nurses (2004). The NMC standards will be formatively assessed in semesters one and two, whereas in the third semester you will be summatively assessed. Learning contracts will be developed in partnership with you, your practice teacher and an identified educationalist to support the achievement of the NMC standards along with individually identified learning outcomes.

The aim of this course is to prepare and develop registered nurses and midwives to meet the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) professional standards for specialist community public health nurses. Teaching and learning

The teaching, learning and assessment strategy of the course reflects its interprofessional, client-centred and practice-focused approach. Opportunities for sharing existing and developing skills, knowledge and experience are maximised. Lively debates develop within the sessions and you will be able to discuss relevant issues with others from different primary care trusts and the wider health and care environments. In order to make the most of the range of experience, skills and knowledge within the group, a variety of teaching and learning strategies will be used. Approach to assessment

The course is centred on practice and you will spend 50% of time in the practice environment. Your community practice teachers (CPTs) are highly involved with the development and implementation of the course and there is a great deal of collaboration with the primary care trusts (PCT) education leads. You will be encouraged to critically analyse and evaluate SCPHN practice with your lecturers and CPTs, and your assignments will provide a focus for analysing practice. Your CPT will be responsible for facilitating your learning, supervising your progress and assessing your competence in practice.

Attendance pattern

This course is unique in nature as you will be paid full-time (or part-time) thus your attendance at university is recorded. Sickness and absence during the course will affect your sickness and absence record. Equally punctuality at university is a important part of your professional role.

We have a number of both promising and experienced researchers working in established areas including cancer care, children and families, drugs and alcohol, physical rehabilitation and enablement, and interprofessional education and collaborative practice. Over the past few years, these researchers have won external research and consultancy contracts including grants, fellowships and studentships for NHS staff. Our research staff collaborate with researchers from across Oxford Brookes University and from the Institute of Health Sciences at the University of Oxford, along with research teams from many other UK and international centres.

Following successful completion of the required theoretical learning outcomes (120 credits at master’s level) and the specialist community public health nursing practice competencies (NMC 2004) you are eligible to register as a specialist community public health nurse (school nurse), and be recorded as a community prescriber on the NMC register. You continue your studies and complete a 60 credit master’s level dissertation module leading to an MSC Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (School Nursing). This is undertaken as one year part-time or six months full time study after SCPHN (SN) registration with the NMC. It must be completed within five years of commencing the PGDip.

What you study

You study evidence based practice and the factors which impact on the health and well-being of children, young people and their families; protection and safeguarding standards for children and young people; the new school nursing agenda; public health, personal leadership philosophies and behaviours and their application within organisational settings; public health nursing practice, legal and ethical dimensions. Prescribing from the community practitioners’ formulary, and designing and managing a service evaluation.

Teaching

The programme comprises 50% theory and 50% practice within an integrated approach. Practice based learning – you are allocated a practice teacher by your sponsoring organisation who facilitates your learning in practice and is responsible for the assessment of your competence in practice.

Teaching methods include lecturers, seminars, experiential learning, scenarios, problem based learning, case study work, simulations, action learning sets, and peer led seminars and discussions.

Assessments include examinations, a defended poster, essays, case study analysis, research proposal, simulations and a service evaluation project. Practice is assessed via the practice progress file through the mechanism of the tripartite meetings which include you, your practice teacher and your academic mentor.

Employability

The course prepares you to work as a school nurse and to take practice forward to meet the challenges of a dynamic school nursing profession.
