The Master of Specialist Teaching has reduced (starting in 2015) from 240 credits to 180 credits. This means you can now complete this qualification in three years of part-time study.
Studying the Master of Specialist Teaching will allow you to apply your knowledge and skills in diverse cultural contexts to undertake practical research and advanced study within your area of specialist teaching and inclusive education.

Swansea University is the only UK university to offer a British Blood Transfusion Society approved degree in Advanced Specialist Blood Transfusion.
This is a part-time course that will be delivered via the Work-based Learning (WBL) route with students employed in a variety of heath care settings.
The Master's level course for the Specialist Blood Transfusion has been developed in collaboration with the British Blood Transfusion Society. Members of the British Blood Transfusion Society (BBTS) will work in partnership with colleagues from the College of Human and Health Sciences in providing appropriate support for these students.
The Advanced Specialist Blood Transfusion programme team will provide academic support and facilitation of the WBL and the identified work-based mentor will provide guidance clinically.
Students can therefore be working in a setting distinct from the College and able to work at their own pace and react to learning opportunities in a real life setting.
The BBTS is a professional membership body which is committed to supporting transfusion professionals through the provision of career development and learning opportunities, thus assuring ongoing advancement of blood transfusion and its practitioners. It currently has in excess of 1600 members, representing transfusion professionals at all levels and locations.
Whilst formal training and education has been available for doctors, clinical scientists and biomedical scientists specialising in transfusion medicine for some years, nurses and transfusion practitioners have had limited access to formal programmes of education in blood transfusion. The educational preparation of nurses and transfusion practitioners is critical to promoting safe and effective transfusion practice. The purpose of this degree in Advanced Specialist Blood Transfusion Practice is to prepare the practitioner to achieve the level of expertise that the BBTS has detailed in its curriculum framework for nurses and transfusion practitioners working in UK Blood Services and the wider NHS.
The programme reflects, in part, the content of the original framework for the BBTS Specialist Certificate in Blood Transfusion Science Practice (2008). The framework for the BBTS Specialist Certificate in Transfusion Science Practice for nurses and practitioners working in blood transfusion and associated specialties was compiled by representatives from the BBTS Professional Affairs and Education nursing sub-committee, the UK Blood Services and NHS hospital transfusion team representatives.
The format of work-based learning is well established within the College and concurs with modern learning philosophies, enabling students to learn in their working environment whilst being mentored by experts in their field of practice. This learning enables the employer to support students within their workplace. The student professionally develops whilst continuing to work in their workplace environment.
The CHHS will deliver the Advanced Specialist Blood Transfusion Practice programme in partnership with the BBTS, who will provide subject expertise and curriculum guidance.
This programme is offered on a part-time basis, and will normally take three years to complete.
The MSc programme in Advanced Specialist Blood Transfusion comprises 6 modules (120 credits) and a dissertation (60 credits). The first year will comprise of three 20-credit core modules and the second year will comprise of two 30-credit composite modules. In the final year, students complete the dissertation module (60 credits).
PGDip students undertake the same first and second year modules, but do not undertake the dissertation.
PGCert students undertake the first year modules only.

Nurses and other allied health care professionals (e.g. ODPs) may be interested in studying for a Master's or postgraduate qualification in Advanced Specialist Blood Transfusion Practice.
The core team for the College of Human and Health Sciences have professional backgrounds in either haematology and/or work-based learning. The programme manager, Mrs Heulwen Morgan-Samuel, has extensive clinical experience in general medical nursing, and has developed expertise in the care of cancer patients, including palliative care, and teaches on many palliative care and oncology modules. She is also the designated lead for haematology nursing in the College. She has published a number of research studies in peer reviewed journals specifically on infection control for the immune-compromised patient and the role of the nurse lecturer in supporting students. Heulwen Morgan- Samuel’s research interests include factors that enhance learning within the clinical environment, student support, principles of care and education for oncology nurses. She has co-edited a revised edition of the Fundamentals of Nursing book which is aimed at the pre registration nursing curriculum designated.
Teaching and learning is based on the best research evidence available, and the programme manager will work in close collaboration with members of the British Blood Transfusion Society (BBTS). Their membership includes professionals from all levels across the transfusion community, maintaining clinical and academic currency, to support and enhance practice in this field. The aim of BBTS is to “play a leading role in safe and effective transfusion practice by delivering high quality education and training, setting standards and promoting research and development and innovation” (BBTS, 2015).
Healthcare professionals employed in the field of blood transfusion that require advanced level education in the speciality would benefit from this degree in Advanced Specialist Blood Transfusion.
It is relevant to those wishing to build on their knowledge of blood transfusions within their existing career, but would also be beneficial to those currently working in an environment that manages blood transfusion who wish to focus and develop their career within this field of practice, as well as being a stepping stone for research study. The knowledge, understanding and skills developed would enhance students' expertise and would build on current practice within their own workplaces.
The Post-Graduate Diploma Specialist Nursing (with pathways) is aimed at preparing Nurses for Leadership roles in a field of Nursing of their choice. There are a range of Pathways to suit all Nurses including District Nursing, Mental Health Nursing, Learning Disability Nursing, and Community Children’s Nursing. The full range of Adult Nursing Specialisms include, Palliative Care, Stroke Care, Diabetes Care and Emergency Care.
The programme leads to more than one qualification. You will obtain a degree from Ulster University and a professional qualification from the United Kingdom Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). Students of District Nursing also obtain a further professional qualification in Nurse Prescribing.
The term, ‘Specialist Nursing’ refers to, the exercising of higher levels of judgment and decision-making in relation to the nursing care of individuals, families and communities. As a future Leader you must display this higher level of decision-making across four areas; clinical practice, care and programme management, clinical practice development and clinical practice leadership.
At Ulster we focus on developing you as a Leader and help you achieve academic and professional competence in all these areas. This programme is a 50-50 programme, meaning that 50% of the programme is university-based and 50% based in the practice learning setting. In the Practice Learning setting you will be allocated to a Sign-Off Mentor. This Sign-Off Mentor who is an established Specialist Nurse and Leader in Clinical Care will supervise you throughout the Programme. He/she will assess you and sign off your competencies prior to recording the professional qualification with the NMC. You will also be allocated to a Pathway Leader who will supervise your academic development and provide support throughout.
The academic component of the programme consists of a four 30-credit modules.
District Nursing students have an additional 20 credits to complete in order to evidence outcomes related to Nurse Prescribing.
Full-time students are expected to attend the University for at least 2 days per week, with the remaining time allocated to Practice Learning. Full-time students are normally time-tabled for Mondays and Fridays.
Part-time students attend the University for 1 day per week during Term-Time. In Semester One this is normally a Monday and in Semester Two a Wednesday. Some Pathways have additional days ( i.e Emergency Care) but you will be informed of this at Induction. Practice Learning is organised on days that suit you and your Sign-off Mentor.
All students are expected to attend all classes associated with the programme and be punctual and regular in attendance. Attendance will be monitored both at the University and in the Practice Learning setting and Employers are informed of all absences.

All students must complete 75 days Practice Learning in an aproved setting. Students must have direct interaction with patients and families during this period. Supervision by an expert Specialist Nurse (Sign-Off Mentor) will occur during Practice Learning. A Specialist Practice Qualification (SPQ) Portfolio is required to evidence achievement of professional outcomes.
Graduates of this programme take up posts as Specialist Nurses. Most are in Team Leadership positions. There is 100% Employability associated with this programme.
MA Specialist Journalism at Cardiff Metropolitan University is taught by academic staff who are both practitioners and researchers. This module will provide students with the key skills required to write as journalists and then focus those skills on their chosen specialism.
This module will apply the skills developed in Writing for Magazines by exploring the language, content, style and structure of magazine, newspaper and online features.
The Specialist Journalist
In this module students decide on one specialist subject area, study the nature of journalists’ work in their chosen field, and also produce longer feature articles aimed at specifically targeted audiences.
This module will provide students with the key essential skills to become multimedia journalists and adapt those skills to their specialist field.
This module will provide students with an understanding of the changing landscape of contemporary journalism, and develop knowledge and understanding of journalistic law and ethics.
As well as a work placement in a relevant media organisation, students will also develop essential skills and knowledge needed for making a successful living in the new media landscape.
This module aims to provide the reflective skills necessary to function as a successful journalist, exploring the processes and skills necessary for undertaking rigorous, credible, ethical and worthwhile research.
Dissertation This module allows students to create a journalistic portfolio from their chosen specialism.
Most modules are taught through group workshops and seminars. Some modules will also include individual tutorials and the dissertation module is delivered entirely through one-to-one tutorials with your supervisor.
In workshops and seminars full use is made of University technology and course materials will be delivered and stored through our Virtual Learning Environment. It will be possible for you to access the Virtual Learning Environment remotely and you will be encouraged to do so.
Most modules are 20 credits and the dissertation is worth 40 credits.
In a 20-credit module you will receive 22 hours of timetabled teaching and you will be expected to conduct 178 hours of independent study. In a 30-credit module you will receive 33 hours of timetabled teaching and you will be expected to conduct 267 hours of independent study. The 40-credit dissertation is mainly conducted with independent study. You will receive 4 hours of tutorial supervision (this includes supervisors looking over your work) and you will be expected to conduct 396 hours of independent study.
Each student is appointed a personal tutor who will be available for academic advice, pastoral support and personal development planning. Tutors also have weekly office hours.
A critical but supportive environment is achieved through a combination of workshops, research seminars and e-learning. You will be introduced to the practicalities of preparing and submitting your work for publication.
We have a variety of approaches to assessment across the degree depending upon the module. All practical modules are assessed through portfolios of journalistic work and accompanying critical essays in which you are required to reflect on your journalism and to contextualise your work. These modules also include class-based formative peer-assessment in the form of practical workshops. These do not count towards your final grade but the sessions do help you grow and reflect as a specialist journalist.
Modules also make use of Virtual Learning Environments for assessments and you may be asked to view material online and then to respond to it.
You will receive tutor support in class and through our VLE in order to prepare you for each assessment point. We also have library facilities online and at campus.
As well as a career in journalism, the MA is also a great choice for those wishing to enhance their employment and professional opportunities in editorial and publishing careers.
Key journalistic skills and techniques are, of course, central to the degree. However, this degree will also encourage you to develop the valuable transferable skills of autonomy, effective collaboration, self-direction, organisation, initiative and adaptability that are highly regarded in the workplace.
As well as journalism, a Master's degree in Specialist Journalism could also lead to a variety of other careers, such as: teaching, research, public relations, marketing, the civil service, publishing, the media, and employment in the public or voluntary sectors.
