This programme fulfils the need for dental practitioners to have access to a higher dental degree which provides specialist clinical training in Special Care Dentistry.

The Professional Doctorate is a research qualification that contains Professional Skills Training. Students who successfully complete the DDSc programme in Special Care Dentistry will be awarded the DDSc (Special Care Dentistry) from the University of Liverpool and will be eligible to sit the Tri-collegiate Diploma of Membership in Special Care Dentistry (MSpec Care Dent) specialty membership examination from the Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) of Edinburgh, Royal College of Surgeons of England and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow.

Both the UK Specialist Curriculum in Special Care Dentistry and the tri-collegiate Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh blueprints in Special Care Dentistry are embedded into the programme. The aims and learning outcomes of the International Association for Disability and Oral Health Postgraduate Guidance in Special Care Dentistry are embedded within the programme.

An Honorary National Training Number leading to CCST may be available to suitable candidates with full GDC registration who satisfy the entry requirements to specialty clinical training in Special Care Dentistry as determined by the General Dental Council.

Provides a theoretical foundation and develops appropriate clinical skills for the care of patients needing special care with particular emphasis on the use of behaviour management techniques, analgesia, sedation and general anaesthesia. It also covers training in research methods and their practical application. You will also undertake a research project. Research focus is on the management of individuals requiring special care and the impact of providing this service for the community.

For clinicians working in general practice, community, hospital and/or university departments who wish to become specialists and leaders in this area of dental care. To increase knowledge about dental care for individuals with special needs and the impact of providing this service for the community.

We are currently redeveloping and revalidating all of our Pre-Registration Nursing programmes and we expect to run new MSc and BSc Mental Health Nursing courses from September 2016.

Working at master's level, you will focus on developing a knowledge base in mental health nursing that is evidence-based and strongly underpinned by research.

You will develop an in-depth knowledge and understanding of mental health nursing. This will be informed by scholarship and research as well as critical awareness of current issues/development in the field.

You will acquire specific skills, knowledge and competence in your chosen field and more broadly will be enquiry focused, reflective, innovative, confident and self-aware.

You will complete a master’s level research project involving primary data collection; a service improvement project, a critical review of the literature, or other scholarly output and will be supported to publish your work.

In health and social care no professional group works in isolation. Oxford Brookes teaches a wide range of pre-qualification and foundation courses including health and social care, nursing, midwifery, occupational therapy, osteopathy, operating department practice, paramedic emergency care, and social work. This is the only part-time MSc Clinical Pharmacy course in the North East of England. It runs on a distance learning basis and allows you to combine study with work and family commitments. Each of our £57,000 SimMan mannequins has blood pressure, a pulse and other realistic physiological behaviour. The models can be pre-programmed with various medical scenarios, so you can demonstrate your pharmacological expertise in a realistic yet safe setting. Our academic team is also actively working with the SimMan manufacturers to develop new pharmacy simulations.

Pharmacy Practice
One of the most important skills of pharmacists is to communicate their expertise in a manner that the public can understand and accept. The University has invested in a purpose-built model pharmacy complete with consultation suite. This allows you to develop skills in helping patients take the correct medicine in the right way, with optional video recording of your interaction with patients for the purposes of analysis and improvement. This course focuses on contemporary practice, teaching evidence-based principles and systems to ensure an optimal outcome for the patient and practitioner.

INDUSTRY LINKS

Completion of this programme of study provides 60 allowable credits towards the FGDP (UK) Career Pathway (Clinical); 30 allowable credits towards the Career Pathway (Other).

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT

The programme encompasses a blended learning approach and consists of a combination of lectures, seminars, workshops, clinic training sessions and laboratory visits. Each person will be assigned a personal tutor for the entire programme.

Each module of your course will have a series of assessments and examinations - these are designed to develop and test your core knowledge and skills at regular intervals throughout the programme. Assessments focus on your higher levels skills of diagnosis and planning, rather than simply remembering facts. Typical assessments would include analysis of given clinical cases OSCEs and essays.

FURTHER INFORMATION

During the course (two years PgDip; three years MSc) you will be expected to attend up to 20 study / assessment days per year. Many of these sessions will be within the School of Dentistry on the main UCLan Preston campus, though some sessions will be timetabled in the adjacent UCLan Dental Clinic, where you will observe, assist and ultimately lead in clinical treatment. To accompany the study days, much of the course content, including lecture notes, PowerPoint slides, and assignments will be delivered to you via the University’s Blackboard Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), allowing you to both prepare work for study days and undertake additional work independently from your home location.

Work in the early part of the course will comprise lectures, presentations and practical sessions in our state-of-the-art phantom head facility. As you move through the course you will progress to working on live patients under close supervision within the UCLan Dental Clinic. Here skills will be developed and assessed through Direct Observations of Procedural Skills (DOPS). The academic underpinning that supports this discipline will be developed though lectures, presentations, directed reading and case-based discussions, which you and others in the group will be expected to prepare and lead. Group sizes are generally small (typically 10 per cohort) leading to an informal and supportive learning environment where you can ensure that your own learning needs are being met.
