Overview

The aims of the international social policy masters programme are to provide you with:

  • an in-depth understanding of key theoretical and conceptual debates in international social policy, the capacity to evaluate competing explanatory frameworks and the role of cross-national and comparative perspectives
  • detailed knowledge of the various means by which social policy is delivered and the ability to analyse the strengths and weaknesses of these different approaches in varying national contexts
  • a knowledge of key issues in the philosophy of social science and the ability to apply this knowledge in the design and practice of social research
  • a knowledge of the principal methods of qualitative or quantitative research utilised in the social sciences and an understanding of their application in different contexts, and (dependent on your choice of options in semester two) a knowledge of the techniques of data analysis utilised in the social sciences and their applications
  • a choice of specialising, dependent on pathway, on key issues associated with international social policy (ie ageing societies, development and social enterprise) or advanced qualitative and quantitative research methods

The MSc in Sustainability is an interdisciplinary master’s degree designed to explore sustainability issues in both developed and developing societies. It addresses critical global challenges including:

- enabling population health and wellbeing in an increasingly stressed planet

- delivering food, water and energy to an urbanising world

- understanding the present and future development impacts of patterns of settlement, land use and 

land cover change

- understanding the inter-dependencies between people and the planet

Taught across three faculties, the MSc Sustainability will allow you to flourish within the interdisciplinary arena of sustainability. The course is designed with flexibility to allow you to create a programme of study that is tailor-made to your requirements and aspirations.

Guidance is provided on the wide variety of optional modules which allows you to specialise in pathways centred round consultancy, population and remote sensing & GIS or to gain a broader experience across the disciplines. Our PGCE programme prepares you thoroughly to teach children across the primary age range, through a careful integration of University and school-based learning which draws on the expertise of our partner schools as well as University tutors. In the c36 week course you will spend approximately two-thirds of your time in school and the remainder in University, other settings and self-study. Most trainee teachers will focus on ages 5-11, with some School Direct alliances offering places to train to teach ages 3-7.

We aim to develop your understanding of how children learn and the factors that are involved; develop your subject knowledge in relation to the National Curriculum; support your growing proficiency in planning, teaching, assessing and managing a classroom; familiarise you with current policy and initiatives; and help you to become an informed, reflective, and enquiring professional who will be an asset to any school.

Specialism

Schools are increasingly looking for teachers who can lead and support staff in a range of areas. All trainees are encouraged to take advantage of the range of opportunities we provide to personalise their PGCE so that it reflects their professional experience, personal interests and developing areas of specialism. Current options include French, Science, Storytelling, PE, Green issues, Maths leadership, computer science, children's literature and drama. 

We have a strong commitment to developing positive attitudes towards the health and well-being of children and teachers in schools. This runs as a thread across the course and all trainees participate in a project to explore and develop their practice in this area, for example investigating emotional health and well-being, healthy eating, or the use of the outdoors. In the modern global world, we are aware of the importance of developing international links; since 2012, trainees have been offered the opportunity to work in Kenya for two weeks of the course, with many of them describing this as ‘life-changing’.

For suitably-qualified applicants (i.e. a degree, good A level grade or equivalent or appropriate experience), we offer Primary Mathematics as a specialism, alongside training as a general Primary teacher. Focused university sessions, carefully selected school placements and a programme of additional experiences help you develop the specific skills needed to be a Mathematics specialist in school.

This programme is a pathways-based MSc degree, with a strong emphasis on the development of skills and specialism in Bioarcheology, including opportunities to gain experience with both human and zooarchaeological remains.

Students will acquire expertise in the anatomy of humans and animals, bone identification, sexing, ageing, health and disease, paleopathology, growth, diet, death and burial, and ethics. They will learn how to consider issues such as status, ethnicity, social identity, disability, migration and domestication thorough skeletal material and mortuary contexts.

The programme has a strong practical component. Students have full and unlimited access to the large human skeletal collection held in purpose-built facilities in the Department of Archaeology, including Bronze Age, Roman, Anglo-Saxon, and medieval skeletons, as well as one of the largest faunal comparative collections in the UK, including fish and birds. Practical work further includes opportunities to work with isotopes for analysis of diet and migration in our isotope preparation lab, with analysis undertaken at National Oceanography Center, part of University of Southampton. State-of-the-art imaging is available at University of Southampton MuVIS Imaging Centre where students can access a full scanning, imaging and micro-CT suite through Archaeology’s collaboration with Bioengineering. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and 3-D printing facilities are also available. In addition, students engage with the latest developments in molecular techniques that can be applied to osteological material.

Bioarchaeology at University of Southampton has close links and collaboration with Anatomy through the Centre for Learning Anatomical Sciences and with Historic England. It is a global leader in research with projects across the globe including Spain, Romania, Croatia, Sudan, Egypt, USA, Canada, Denmark, UK and students frequently participate in these. Staff are actively involved in the following journals and organisations: Bioarchaeology International, Paleopathology Association, British Association for Biological Anthropology and Osteoarchaeology (BABAO), and American Journal of Physical Anthropology (AJPA)

Overview

You will engage with hands-on, real-world archaeological materials and situations, including opportunities to collaborate with a range of stakeholders and partners in the archaeological sector through a professional placement. By these means you will acquire skills for vocational employment or subsequent PhD research. Your programme will be embedded within Southampton Archaeology’s distinctive research culture, with world-class expertise, diverse practice, and contacts with the commercial environment and the heritage sector.

The specialism in Bioarchaeology includes elements that familiarise you with human skeletal biology; key research questions in, and approaches to, bioarchaeology; palaeopathology and disease; the archaeology and anthropology of death; and zooarchaeology. This pathway provides a springboard towards further research or a career in the commercial sector. 

Important aspects of the programme are available across all specialisms. These include the compulsory dissertation module, which should focus on an area of your specialism, if you have chosen one. Furthermore, modules from each pathway are open to you as options, regardless of your chosen specialism. By these means you will be able to build a personalised and flexible programme tailored to your needs.

The aim of the programme is to provide you with all the data analytics and optimisation skills required for a successful career in finance and other business organisations, therefore a wide spectrum of techniques and approaches are covered. For this reason staff from both the Mathematical Sciences and the Southampton Management School are involved with teaching on the MSc programme.

Programme objectives are: 

-to give you a thorough knowledge of the mathematical, financial, computational and communication skills needed for the practical application of Operational Research and finance

-to give you a broad appreciation of related disciplines important in Operational Research 

-to illustrate the use of Operational Research and finance tools in a wide range of applications. This part of the programme is not just descriptive since much of the application of Operational Research is best learned by active involvement. The 3-month summer project and computer workshops are designed with this in mind. In addition, seminars provide a forum for the discussion of practical Operational Research issues 

-to introduce you to research methods and current issues in Operational Research and finance

What is Operational Research and Finance?

Operational Research is the application of scientific methods to the study of complex organisational problems. In this degree course, there is an emphasis on complementary financial studies. Even within the same organisation Operational Research and Finance tends to be highly varied because of its project-driven nature. This breadth of experience offers an exciting and rewarding career in many financial organisations, enabling many Operational Research workers to progress to a career in general management. Moreover the nature of the work brings an Operations Research and Finance graduate into early contact with senior management, and career advancement is typically rapid.

Why do an MSc?

An MSc is generally accepted as being highly desirable for starting and developing a career in OR and financial modelling. The MSc is also a good preparation for research work.

A highlight of the programme is the 3-month summer project. The student is usually placed with a nearby company and works on a real problem of practical importance to that company.

Environment

The Operational Research Group in Mathematics is a strong committed team of 11 lecturing staff and a number of research staff. The Group teaches a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses, as well as undertaking consultancy work for outside organisations. Many of the staff are internationally known in their fields of research.

This programme is an ideal opportunity to provide yourself with the analytical and statistical skill set necessary for success in industry, business or in the public sector. From day one you will find yourself working with multinational organisations on case studies to develop your abilities in applied analytics and statistics. Opportunities for summer projects in a wide range of industries are an integral part of the programme.

Full time study: This one year master programme is suitable for numerate graduates. The MSc programme lasts for twelve months.

The MSc programme in Operational Research and Statistics provides students with the ideal skill set in mathematical modelling, experimental design, statistical analysis, and numerical computation. This programme also provides soft skills such as communicating results to managers/executives. These prepare students to pursue a wide variety of career opportunities in industry, business or in the public sector.

A highlight of the programme is the three-month summer project: it may be either in Operational Research or Statistics (or the interface between the two). You will have the option to bid for an external project which is usually based at a nearby company and requires working on a real problem of practical importance to that company. You also have the option to work on an internal project which might involve data from external sources. The MSc project consists of an individual investigation and is under the supervision of a member of staff. This project enables students to integrate and consolidate skills learned on the course (and to fulfil deliverables for the sponsoring company in the case of an external project).

In summary, the learning and teaching aims of the programme are:

1. To give you knowledge of operational research techniques and applied statistical theory and methods at an advanced level;

2. To train you for careers as either an operational researcher or as a statistician.

3. To enable you to develop oral and written communication skills.

4. To give you experience of applications of operational research and statistical methods.

This unique programme is taught jointly between Engineering and the Environment and Ocean and Earth Science at the University of Southampton, with extensive input from industry.

The coastal zone is widely recognised as important at national, European and global levels.
