Funding

- Pharmacists in the South West region seeking HESW funded places
In response to specific commissioning requirements from HESW, we have been working in partnership with the University of the West of England (UWE) to develop a new interprofessional Non-Medical Prescribing Programme for a range of the non-medical professions eligible to train as prescribers (including pharmacists, nurses and the allied health profession registrants of the Health and Care Professions Council). This partnership between the University of Bath and UWE is called the South West Non-Medical Prescribing Alliance (http://www1.uwe.ac.uk/whatcanistudy/professionaldevelopment/coursesbysector/health/non-medicalprescribing.aspx).

The first intake of the new interprofessional Non-Medical Prescribing Programme will be in September 2016. Students applying for HESW funded places on this Programme will enrol directly as UWE students.

To apply for a HESW funded place, candidates need to have provided details of their requirement for a place into the ‘demand forecast’ for HESW funded places. The demand forecast process is conducted by UWE. Normally information on the requirement for funded places should be collated and submitted into the demand forecast by the employing organisation, or the local CCG. However, if individuals are in doubt about how to do this (particularly those employed in the General Practice setting), they can contact Emily Haycock at UWE () for more information.

In order to be considered for a HESW funded place, there needs to be a confirmed workforce need from the training organisation (which must be a provider of NHS services/contracted to provide NHS services) for the candidate to become an independent prescriber.

There are additional entry requirements set out by the General Pharmaceutical Council that applicants must meet in order to be considered for a place on the Programme; these can be found in the application documentation. Once candidates have registered their interest for a HESW funded place on the interprofessional Non-Medical Prescribing Programme, UWE will provide them with more information on the application process directly.

- The University of Bath uni-professional Pharmacist Prescribing Programme for self-funding and organisationally-funded applicants

The University of Bath will continue to offer the Pharmacist Prescribing Programme, with workshops held at the University of Bath campus, in order to cater for self-funding candidates and organisationally-funded pharmacists outside of the HESW region (including those who wish to complete an independent prescribing course as part of the University of Bath Postgraduate Diploma).

The MA in Local History offers students interested in the history, cultural and development of their local area the opportunity for advanced study and research within a collaborative and academic environment.

Course Overview

In recent years, local history groups have flourished in our communities. This course offers the guidance and support of professional historians for such interests. Although it focuses upon the specific local history of South West Wales, it will also draw upon a general awareness of historical trends and a detailed working knowledge of Welsh history.

The practical research element will familiarise students with research strategies and resources and will encourage them to undertake their own individual original research based upon their personal interests. Successful presentations could be considered for publication in relevant local history journals or as monographs.

The course offers focused support in practical research skills and techniques and detailed analysis of primary material, much of it untapped, which exists in both Welsh and English. Students will be able to make use of the excellent facilities available in local county libraries and record offices.

The course will explore a range of questions that include : How do we define 'local history'? How does local history relate to the wider Welsh and British contexts? What factors forged the lives of the ordinary people of South West Wales in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries? What sources are available for in depth local history research? And what skills will be fostered by an MA in Local History?

The Primary PGCE programmes (General Primary (Lower) and General Primary (Upper)) are designed to prepare students for a career in teaching.

The PGCE is a full-time, intensive vocational programme, suitable for those wishing to train to teach, inspire and enthuse primary aged children, helping them to make excellent progress in learning. The course offers rich opportunities for personal development, as students embark upon the first stages of a career which is challenging, fulfilling and rewarding.

The sessions both in school and at the University are intended to involve students in a range of experiences, which are carefully planned to increase understanding of learning and teaching across the Primary curriculum. There is a focus on developing personal reflective skills, and in engaging with current educational research in order to develop students as knowledgeable and effective practitioners.

The university element adopts a modular structure and teaching takes a blended learning approach including lead lectures, group seminars, tutorials, independent study and directed activities using the virtual learning environment (moodle).

Professional Teaching Experiences take place in a variety of educational contexts. Students build confidence and expertise, culminating in taking responsibility for planning, teaching and assessing a class of children in their chosen phase for a sustained period of time.

In our most recent inspection, Estyn (the Welsh educational inspectorate) praised the Centre’s innovative use of teaching approaches such as Problem-based learning, which forms a core element of the professional studies module.

Key Features

The primary PGCE programme at Swansea sets high expectations of its students and is run jointly between the University and partnership schools across the South Wales region. Programme tutors are knowledgeable and skilful qualified teachers. They possess a wide range of experience and expertise in key curriculum areas and other fields such as literacy, numeracy, ICT, inclusion, Welsh medium studies, humanities, early years, performing arts, bilingualism, PE, RE, thinking skills and more!

Tutors provide excellent pastoral and academic support to ensure that students receive the individual guidance and challenge required to make excellent progress.

During the Programme students study a breadth of subjects, areas of learning and professional matters.

Assessment

In order to complete the programme successfully and meet national standards, students must pass both the practical teaching and written elements of the programme. Practical teaching competence will be assessed by teachers in schools, in conjunction with the university tutor.

University assessments currently include essays, portfolio tasks, presentations and research reports. The programme currently offers 40 level 7 credits at Masters level.

We seek to recruit students who are committed to developing their personal skills and knowledge throughout their studies. Students’ personal literacy and numeracy skills will be regularly audited and monitored throughout the programme. It is a requirement of Welsh Government that literacy skills are measured on exit and judged to be proficient for professional practice. Students complete an exit audit and submit a portfolio of evidence to meet this requirement. A pass grade is mandatory.

This programme is subject to change in response to Government policy.

Our PGCE graduates usually remain in close touch with us as they make their careers in the teaching profession and they often become Subject Mentors on the programme. This creates a very strong, sustainable professional network of teachers which is a rich source of continuing professional development.

Learning and teaching

Our programmes are modular, consisting of self-contained units, taught and assessed on a semester basis. As you progress through each semester and successfully pass the examinations, you will receive credit for the units, thus providing you with a clear indication of your academic progress.

Teaching takes the form of lectures, classes and seminars. Lectures are quite formal, whereas classes and seminars involve interaction between the lecturer and a small number of students for study skills and discussion.

Methods of assessment

Assessment consists of a combination of coursework essays, class exercises, projects, oral presentations and examinations.

This programme equips students with a wide range of theoretical knowledge of research methods and the ability to apply this knowledge within the field of psychology or other areas of social science. Our students leave with a tool kit of methods to use in their future research projects. In addition, students will have the opportunity to develop their practical skills in specific research methods; to develop their theoretical thinking about research; and to work closely on several of their own projects with an academic who is an active and leading researcher in their field. The objective is to equip students with the skills to design, conduct, analyse and report a wide range of research projects and make themselves efficient consumers of other people’s research. Students also acquire the communication skills and other key skills necessary to become an excellent researcher.

Research proposal

Applicants must provide a short research proposal. This is so we can see what fields of research interest you and match you to an appropriate supervisor. In your proposal, please describe a study or experiment that you might carry out during your MRes. This plan won't be binding, and might well change later in discussion with your supervisor, but it is valuable for showing us what interests you and what research methods you favour. Please also list in your proposal at least two supervisors who you think may be interested in your application. You should describe how your research interests match theirs; please also mention whether or not you have already been in contact with them. Also state how your undergraduate qualifications, postgraduate qualifications and work experience have prepared you for the research you wish to carry out and why you are seeking a place at Bath. You’ll learn to teach the core subjects of the national curriculum for children aged 5-11 in primary schools, as well as being introduced to the non-core subjects through lectures, seminars and workshops on campus and independent study. The programme consists of 14 weeks campus-based lectures and seminars interspersed with 24 weeks of three different placements. Overview

The Master of Research (MRes) in ‘Global Political Economy: transformations and policy analysis’ trains doctoral students who can assess the impacts of globalisation both in the short run and longer term using new international data sources and comparative methods.

On completion of this programme, students will:

- have a deepened and interdisciplinary understanding of social science discourses and methods for analysing global processes of change both generally and in specified policy areas.
- be knowledgeable of key contributions to thinking about social, economic and political aspects of the planet as an interdependent social system.
- have an understanding of how global and national policy processes interact.

The programme aims to equip students for careers as professional researchers in either academic or non-academic environments, by developing core research skills. Students will be encouraged to review and critically evaluate approaches to research and their application, and to identify and investigate their own original research questions.

- South West Doctoral Training Centre
This MRes is accredited by the Economics & Social Research Council (ESRC), specifically, as part of the larger South West Doctoral Training Centre (SWDTC). It is a collaborative, interdisciplinary programme, delivered by two universities (Bath and Bristol), building on the research strengths of each institution through the inclusion of collaborative units (delivered jointly by the two institutions).

The MRes can be taken as a course in its own right, or as part of the 1 + 3 (MRes + MPhil/PhD) pathway, which includes further collaborative elements with the University of Bristol.

Given the interdisciplinary nature of this programme, successful graduates could proceed onto an MPhil/PhD in one of several areas/departments, specifically:

- Department of Economics
- Department of Education
- School of Management
- Department of Social & Policy Sciences

If applying for an MRes/PhD (the 1 + 3 programme) applicants should indicate on the Application Form, their preferred MPhil/PhD route.

Progression from the MRes to the MPhil/PhD stage is dependent on achieving an acceptable level of achievement (typically an overall average of 60% on at least the taught component of the MRes).
