This degree provides a coherent combination of courses in South Asian languages and their associated literatures and cultures; it leads to an advanced level of understanding of one aspect of South Asian civilization, together with a broader appreciation of the linguistic and literary culture of the subcontinent. The ‘Directed Readings’ courses, available in several modern languages, have a flexible curriculum which allows them to accommodate the interests of individual students or groups of students. The MA will provide, inter alia, an appropriate training for students wishing to proceed to postgraduate research in South Asian studies; its focus on South Asian language, culture and literature distinguishes it from the interdisciplinary perspective of the MA in South Asian Area Studies on the one hand and the MA in Comparative Literature on the other.

Structure

Students take three taught courses, one of which is considered a major, and complete a 10,000 word dissertation related to the major.

Candidates who wish to take a language at other than introductory level will be assessed at the start of the term to determine the most appropriate level of study.

Part-time students (two years) will take two courses in the first year (normally their Minors) and the Major and dissertation in the second year; part-time students (three years) take one course per year, and their dissertation in the third year.

- Choosing the Courses
Applicants are asked to specify their preferred major subject and to give an alternative, as not all courses are available every year and practical considerations such as timetabling may limit choices.

Once enrolled, students have two weeks to finalise their choice of subjects, during which time they may sample different subjects through attending lectures etc.

Faculty of Languages and Cultures

Six of the academic departments are devoted to teaching and research in the languages, literatures and cultures of Africa, China and Inner Asia, Japan and Korea, the Near and Middle East, South Asia, and South East Asia, with the seventh teaching and conducting research in Linguistics. The Language Centre caters to the needs of non-degree students and governmental and non-governmental organisations. It maintains a huge portfolio of courses, including year-long diploma programmes, weekly evening classes in about 40 different African and Asian languages, and tailored intensive one-to-one courses. The Language Centre also offers courses in French, Portuguese and Spanish.

Their teaching is in three main areas:
- language competence acquisition;
- textual and cultural studies - both comparative and language-specific, and covering not only 'literature' in a strict sense but also visual media, performance, folklore, translation etc.;
- language studies with linguistics at its core - including the prestigious Hans Rausing Endangered Languages Project.

Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply (CIPS)
The Brunel MSc Global Supply Chain Management is one of a small number of programmes in the United Kingdom to receive accreditation from the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply (CIPS) and the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT). Operations and Information Systems Management Research Group (OISM)
Based on accumulated knowledge and resources in two previously successful research centres of the Business School (ISEing led by Habin Lee and Ray Hackney; and OASIS previously led by Amir Sharif and David Gallear), OISM has the ambition to be a leading research group specialised in responsible and sustainable operation management - exploring information systems, operations research, management science, and general and strategic management knowledge, using approaches across public and private industry sectors.

Modes of Study

1-year full-time in September: The taught element of the course (September to April) includes eight modules; delivery will be by a combination of lectures, seminars and tutorials/group work. A further four months (May to September) is spent undertaking the dissertation.

Assessment

Modules are typically assessed by individual assessment, or an examination in May.

Teaching methods include lectures and informal small study groups.

Coursework and examinations place considerable stress on the ability to think and reason critically, but constructively.

The dissertation (12,000 words) is the capstone demonstration of these skills, requiring students to conceive, justify, design and execute a major project.

Who is it for?

Students come from all over the world and from all kinds of backgrounds - from fashion to film and all other sectors of the creative industries. This Masters is ideal for those who have an undergraduate degree and a passion for the arts, or those with previous experience working within the cultural sector and eclectic areas of interest they want to pursue. From digital crowdfunding to policies for the creative city, and from social media and the democratisation of opera to the motivations of young fashion enrepreneurs or museum branding, students are able to investigate their own subject and develop their individual professional path on the programme.

Objectives

This programme is all about customising your learning so you can become a competent professional ready to start, continue or change your career. On completion of the course you will be able to evaluate and integrate the theories and practices of culture, policy and management.

The student experience runs through everything we do, from the structure of the course itself to our discussions and tutorials. The curriculum was developed with support from an advisory group that includes senior figures from Arts Council England, the Barbican, Shakespeare's Globe and the V&A. This means your learning is attuned to the latest insights from the sector.

Placements

The professional work placement is an elective module giving you the opportunity to work in the cultural sector to apply the skills you have gained from the programme so far.

When it comes to the organisation, it is totally up to you. Previous students have gained experience with the Southbank Centre, Tate Modern, The British Library, IMG Artists, LIFT, Business of Culture (consultancy), Motiroti, British Museum, Unicorn Theatre, Jerwood Space, London Fashion Week, Arts Council England and the British Film Institute.

The British Library said their placement student was "certainly one of the best interns we have ever had in our team. We are eternally grateful for the hard work and dedication she put into her work and for making her stay in our team a very pleasant one on all fronts. We were sad to see her go!".

Teaching and learning

Teaching and learning is delivered through lectures, seminars, group work, tutorials, visits, workshops, verbal and written feedback, plus personal research from a wide range of resources.

You are able to apply your essay questions and academic work to the real world – and one that you know well. For example, in the marketing module, you can choose an organisation from your own country, conduct research and then write a marketing strategy, which could be practically implemented.

With 50% core and 50% elective modules, you can choose which specialisms you study from the first term onwards. This means you can design your own course and determine your direction right from the start. This flexibility offers our MA students the freedom to shape their future.

The MA is structured around a spine of four core modules taking place in the autumn and spring terms – culture, cultural policy, managing organisations and Introduction to research. The MA culminates in a 15,000-word dissertation (running through the spring and summer terms), which students complete by the end of August.

Media professionals and media firms are united in their need to acquire the commercial, strategic and managerial skills to prosper in an industry undergoing constant fundamental change. This course is designed to address these needs, developing entrepreneurial leaders equipped to deal with the complex and novel challenges presented by new technologies, consumer behaviour, and evolving business models.

The course will enable you to identify and analyse strategic and operational problems and opportunities, understand, quantify and access national and international media markets, and use foresight and planning techniques to understand and respond to change. As well as being able to manage complex media projects, you will also have the skills to engage in strategic direction setting, deploy business-planning skills, and excel in leadership and implementation.

The course is delivered by academic staff with lengthy experience of advising and managing media organisations. Teaching methods are based around practical problems and include in-class exercises and individuals and group projects and assessment. Assignments will enable you to develop and apply your skills in creative project development and business planning.

Course content

The course provides a rounded suite of managerial and commercial skills, rooted in a critical understanding of today's media and content industries, building on our role as a leader in UK media research. The MA in more detail

The MA in Social Entrepreneurship is one of the few graduate programmes in the world dedicated entirely to the study of the fast-moving field of social entrepreneurship and innovation.

It will equip you with a strong understanding of foundational theories of entrepreneurship, innovation, social problems and policy (with organisational sociology as the base discipline) while supplying practical tools in relation to entrepreneurial modelling and SROI.

There is also a marked emphasis on creativity, which means that you will have considerable scope to choose the precise topics you wish to tackle and the approaches you wish to apply. Teaching on the course is interactive and seminar-driven rather than based on the traditional model of long lectures and limited discussions.

What you study

The programme will introduce you to key concepts in the historical development of social enterprise and innovation and to its changing role in society and the economy. Seminars and talks will be given by social entrepreneurs, as well as leading professionals.

You'll learn innovative approaches to developing an enterprise, and gain confidence in revenue generation and financial modelling.

A significant amount of the learning is delivered through group projects and activities. This is designed to develop your individual communication skills and teamwork.

Social and alternative finance is among the key areas examined in such guest lectures; social innovation cases from particular country-contexts such as, for example, South Korea, Japan and Colombia also feature frequently.

We are occasionally able to provide additional training in related fields (such as accounting) in the form of short-term workshops to strengthen our students’ educational experience at Goldsmiths and at the University of London. We also encourage you to become members of various social entrepreneurship/collaboration hubs around London for learning and networking purposes.

A non-business school programme

The MA in Social Entrepreneurship at Goldsmiths is quite unlike traditional business/management-driven courses in the field: on the one hand, it allows scope for a far deeper examination of the theoretical and practical foundations of social innovation; on the other, it provides unique access to an expanding learning community (formed by our students and our wider, growing network) engaged in real-time research.

Equally important is the fact that students are consciously encouraged to, and supported with, forming their professional public profiles, through things like:

In a globalised and interdependent world, these issues can only be understood from an international perspective which accounts for these common pressures and processes, but which also recognises and engages with the diversity of national traditions and institutions for delivering welfare.

The International Social Policy programme takes a policy analytic approach to provide you with an advanced understanding of current debates, theories and concepts relevant to international social policy. You learn about the common features of social policy arrangements internationally and the variety and differences that characterise welfare across the countries and regions of the world. Drawing on the research-based expertise available at SSPSSR which relates to countries ranging from China, South Korea and Singapore in South East Asia to the UK, Germany and Sweden in Western Europe, you are equipped to understand how national and global forces interact to shape trajectories of welfare system development.

The programme enables you to apply theories and methods of social policy in exploring enduring cross cutting themes in social policy, including the prioritisation of equality and capabilities, as well as to drill down to how and why policy unfolds in key welfare fields. What is Business Development?

CNCP RECOGNITION

Students graduating from the MSc Business Development also receive a certificate conferring them the title of Manager International. This title, recognized by the Commission Nationale de la Certification Professionnelle - an agency belonging to the French Ministry of Labor - attests to the successful acquisition of a core of international management skills and knowledge necessary for future roles as managers in an international context. The Manager International label is registered on the Répertoire National des Certifications Professionnelles at Level 1, the highest level for such certification.

At the end of the classroom portion of the program, each student will be required to complete a thesis, known as the Final Management Project. This work is approximately 20,000 words in length and is completed under the guidance of a GGSB tutor.

To successfully complete the Final Management Project, you are required to address a particular research question or knowledge gap in the field of your study.

This should be business oriented and coherent with your program’s objectives. You may choose to write your Final Management Project on a topic grounded in your internship experience.

During this program, participants will have the opportunity to become real-life business developers by exploring a Live Business Case provided by companies working in partnerships with the MSc Business Development program. The work students do on the Live Business Case is closely linked to the International Study Residency. Students will work in groups, delving deeply into their cases during the seven months from October to June under the supervision of a GGSB coach.

EXPECTATIONS AND OBJECTIVES FOR MSC BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT STUDENTS

The Live Business Cases are launched by a briefing given by the company.

The Live Business Case will cover:

- Looking at business development and management issues from an integrated, holistic perspective,
- Provide students with a final opportunity to apply learning from the material, courses and lectures that they have studied.

At the conclusion of the Live Business Case, students will be able to:

- Build a company analysis
- Select and apply a methodology, and make useful and efficient recommendations
- Understand the Business Development process
- Provide critical analysis
- Make strategic decisions
- Work in small multicultural groups under time constraints
- Produce compelling written and oral presentations
- Demonstrate communication, negotiation and leadership skills

At the end of 7 months of the Live Business Case, each group will produce a written report and make an oral presentation to the Jury (company tutor, school tutor and program director) and the other groups from the program.

International Residency Trip: An Amazing Opportunity!

As part of the MSc Business Development program, students have the opportunity to visit one emerging economy each year (Brazil, Russia, China, India). The goal is to create an integrated learning experience for all participants.

The International Residency Trip combines academic lectures, corporate visits, and cultural activities. The students gain extensive knowledge of global business practices to prepare them as business developers that consistently perform across cultures and compete in a global market. The International Residency Trip is linked with the Live Business Case and students will have the amazing opportunity to visit important companies.

FOREIGN LANGUAGES

Foreign language skills are essential in business today and the program is taught in English but provides the possibility to learn a foreign language at the same time.
No prior knowledge of French is required to attend the program. Non-French speakers may study French, native and fluent French speakers will have the possibility to choose from Spanish or Chinese. The language component is not compulsory.

MANAGERIAL CREATIVITY: A SELF MANAGEMENT METHOD

This course/ work shop is an introduction to all group assignments to be carried out all through the year. In order to help you be efficient when working in small groups, you need to know not only your personal strengths and improvement points but also those of your class.

By discovering them during this course, you'll be able to imagine together how to leverage the strengths of your class and how to manage the improvement points. You have to manage the classroom as a company so we will appoint the different representatives in charge of taking care of the main aspects of the construction of the class as a performing team: event manager, class representative, time keeper, project leader, MSC community leader, Alumni communication and coordination manager. The aim of this course is to equip present and future public service practitioners with the skills and understanding needed to play a significant role as change agents within their home professional environments.

The programme places great emphasis on:

-Developing a commitment to lifelong learning and reflective practice in students.

This innovative public policy oriented and public management based course is taught by an experienced and dynamic team of academic staff who are active in the international research community in the fields of public management reform in transitional countries, comparative public policy and governance, strategic management in public sector organisations, corruption in transitional countries, and local and regional governance.

Our aim is to develop high quality administrators and managers who will play a critical role in their home country environments. This will be achieved through an interdisciplinary programme of study, which is intellectually rigorous and professionally relevant to your local context and organisation. The course is particularly attractive to graduates working in public services abroad who want to develop expertise in public service reform, capacity strengthening and institutional development.

The course meets the demands of an ever more complex and dynamic sector comprised of government departments, local authorities, public agencies and voluntary organisations from Britain and abroad, thus reflecting the need for skilled and innovative public managers, administrators and policy makers acting as agents for change.

Using a blended learning approach incorporating a variety of teaching and learning strategies appropriate to postgraduate level study, the course introduces you to the latest strategic management and planning tools applied in public agencies, overviews emerging trends and best practice in public policy within a comparative context and provides a strong theoretical and methodological grounding. Uniquely, the programme benefits from a bespoke research methodology component focused on public policy and management research and analysis. Moreover, the University’s vanguard Virtual Learning Environment, coming to support the teaching and learning process, as well repeated opportunities to reflect upon personal academic development, add value to your student experience and to the overall value of the programme.

The core teaching team on this course is both experienced and dynamic. The team is involved, on a regular basis, in civil service training, in consultancy and advisory work for public sector organisations, as well as in internationally recognised academic research, thus providing the Master in Public Administration teaching with relevant, informative and contemporary case-studies. One of the course’s greatest strengths is that it achieves a fine balance between its theoretically informed structures and the practical application of skills developed throughout. Expert practitioners from a range of public and voluntary sector organisations contribute to the course.

The course has historically attracted students sponsored by the Commonwealth, the governments of Bangladesh, Indonesia, Japan, Romania, South Korea, Vietnam, and students from (amongst others) Afghanistan, Germany, Kosovo, Morocco, Nigeria, South Africa, Poland, Russia, Ukraine and the USA. Our graduates access managerial and decision-making positions in a range of public and voluntary sector organisations.

A key feature of this course is that it includes a work placement module that offers students the chance to experience directly the work of a relevant area of public service in a London-based organisation over a substantial period of time. You will also benefit from the skills and support from our full-time placement and employability officer.

The course’s variety of teaching and learning styles is reflected in the variety of assessment tools employed throughout the course. Within the general principle of mixed mode formative and summative assessment, we use a diversity of assessment instruments: a range of written assignments, such as essays, reports, portfolios, individual or group classroom presentations, and the dissertation.

The MPA dissertation is a 60 credit project that allows students to pursue individual research on a topic of their choice, within the public administration and public policy fields.

Detailed verbal and written feedback is given on all assessments, and significant tutorial support is given during the dissertation, including bespoke dissertation workshops.

Modular structure

The course consists of five taught modules, a work experience placement in a UK public service organisation (two days a week over 15 weeks), and a triple-module dissertation (which may be completed in your home country).

After the course

Graduates can expect a host of public administration job opportunities in the contexts of transition and modernisation – the course is ideal for those already employed in the sector who wish to update their skills, or progress to further study.

The work placement is also an excellent opportunity for you to practice the skills and apply the knowledge acquired during the programme, but also to forge long lasting professional relationships within the sector. The network of employers that offer work placements for our students include: the London Boroughs of Hackney, Harrow, Havering, Islington, Redbridge, Tower Hamlets, Westminster; government bodies such as the Department of Work and Pensions, and voluntary sector organisations such as Thames Reach, amongst others. Students have praised the work placement for its relevance to their career development and the employability skills it fosters.

Our recent graduates have accessed positions in central governments in Romania, Poland, Bangladesh, in executive agencies and local government in the UK and in wide range of voluntary sector organisations in the UK and abroad – to name just a few.

International links

The London Met MPA operated two international franchises in Russia, in conjunction with the Higher School of Economics in Moscow and the Urals Academy of Public Administration in Ekaterinburg. London Met MPA staff are regularly invited to contribute to programmes abroad.

Additionally the International Summer School in Public Administration, delivered by core MPA staff, has run since 2003, attracting students of politics, management and public administration.

Moving to one campus

Between 2016 and 2020 we're investing £125 million in the London Metropolitan University campus, moving all of our activity to our current Holloway campus in Islington, north London. This will mean the teaching location of some courses will change over time.

Whether you will be affected will depend on the duration of your course, when you start and your mode of study. The earliest moves affecting new students will be in September 2017. This may mean you begin your course at one location, but over the duration of the course you are relocated to one of our other campuses. Our intention is that no full-time student will change campus more than once during a course of typical duration.

All students will benefit from our move to one campus, which will allow us to develop state-of-the-art facilities, flexible teaching areas and stunning social spaces.

Programme structure

The MFA runs over two academic years and is four semesters long. You may have the opportunity to take part in an exchange with South Korea in semester 2 of Year 1. The programme culminates in an assessment of the production of a body of practical and written work on an agreed, self-initiated studio project.

Your study will combine practical studio work with theoretical and written studies, including professional practice elements to prepare you for employment in the industry, and a lecture/seminar series that will examine the wider context of your studies.

The MA North Korean Studies provides the only dedicated master’s degree in this subject area outside South Korea. Uniquely, this one year course embeds the learning and teaching in a graduate introduction to social science philosophies and methods, provides training in the Korean language geared to the language level of the student (beginners, intermediate, or advanced) and, at the same time, introduces a wide range of materials on the society, economy, politics and International relations of North Korea. The course director, Professor Hazel Smith, is a world-leading scholar whose publications provide global benchmark studies on North Korea. The MA is taught by staff situated in UCLan’s International Institute of Korean Studies, which works within a globally established network of influential academics, diplomats, journalists and public policy officials who work on North Korea.

The course will provide you with the comparative advantage in journalism, diplomacy, international organisations, NGOs, and global business of gaining knowledge and expertise, not just on North Korea, but in the international relations of East Asia, which is the motor force of the world economy yet also contains some of the globe’s pressing security problems; the most important to all of the global powers of which is North Korea’s nuclear programme. Students graduating from this master’s course will have developed knowledge, analytical skills and language skills (Korean at beginners, intermediate or advanced level) that will equip them to work in a number of employment sectors dealing with international affairs.
