Upon successful completion of the program, a graduate will:

• Analyze the changing face of the Canadian Textile and apparel industry in context with shifting global sourcing and manufacturing centres.
• Determine strategies and formulate a production plan for developing new fashion/cosmetic/fragrance products that are consistent with evolving market needs using Supply Chain Management principles.
• Strategically analyze the process of brand development, market positioning and new fashion/cosmetic/fragrance trends, and evaluate potential impact.
• Determine entrepreneurship strategies in both large and small companies.
• Develop replenishment processes for product inventory and develop pricing and market positioning strategies which take into account competitive pressures, manufacturing costs and corporate objectives.
• Create visual merchandising promotional images using specialized industry software.
• Formulate a strategic business plan based on the ever changing face of retail operations, and conduct primary research on market and manufacturing conditions in order to determine existing and potential levels of activity for particular fashion and cosmetic products.

Work Placement

According to City of Toronto data, the fashion industry employs nearly 50,000 people. Fashion design, wholesaling and retailing have grown dramatically in the last five years, with 10,000 fashion-related jobs. There are 4,600 fashion retail firms in Toronto that generate annual sales of $2.6 billion. Sales have grown by 6.4 per cent in the last year. Employment in the wholesale and retail trade grew by 34.5 per cent or 13,000 jobs in the last five years.

Graduates may find employment in companies that develop, manufacture, market, import, wholesale, distribute or retail fashion apparel and accessories. Employment settings include apparel suppliers, wholesale distribution companies, fashion retail companies, importers and logistics firms, marketing divisions within major retail operations, and up and coming online businesses. The program equips you for roles such as product development manager, private label/brand manager, retail manager, event manager, retail buyer, fashion manager relating to sourcing, logistics co-ordinator, inventory control manager, visual merchandiser, promotion manager or planner. Online retailing offers positions in community management, social media marketing and opportunities in customer service inventory management.

Introduction

Over recent decades the fashion and textile industries has been making changes; responding to enviromental and social needs; publishing corporate social reports and working with industry bodies and NGOs. Yet the Rana Plaza disaster in Dhaka, Bangladesh in 2013 was tragedy for the workers, their families, the country and the industries, and an imperative for new thinking, new practice, and fresh ethics. It is a horrific milestone for fashion manufacture, communication, consumer awareness and industry responsibilities. The industries are now reaching out to governments, NGOs, charities, unions and radical thinkers for advice and support. They are accountable for their current and future ethics. Without doubt it is time for change in which education is a crucial contributor to the new solutions, and alternative futures for the industries.

The new MSc Ethics in Fashion (See http://www.postgraduate.hw.ac.uk/prog/msc-ethics-in-fashion/ ) is a research led, taught programme, focussed on analysing and understanding the industry, whilst mapping the changes in practice, monitoring the voices and diversity of stakeholders in the supply-chain. The programme offers a chance for ethically aware graduates and established professionals to refresh and extend their knowledge and skillset. The taught programme has been created for those wanting to work, or already working in the fashion and textiles industries, in design, sourcing management, buying, journalism and corporate affairs. The qualification provides a set of fresh perspectives and insights for an existing first degree qualification, or relevant experience in any of the above areas or similar for those wanting to be part of the dynamic changing industries.

Industry links

The School of Textiles and Design, and the research staff have strong global industry and NGO links in design, corporate social responsibility reporting and corporate affairs, social enterprise. In addition teaching staff are Fellows of the Fellowship of 500, in the Ethical Fashion Forum. There are both courses, and research opportunities to work with local and international industry.

The programme has been designed to utilise selected core postgraduate courses offered within the School and introducing courses specific to Ethics in Fashion, thus encouraging inter-disciplinary participation and discourse, and membership of the a growing research community.

Objectives

- Analyse the ethics in supply-chain practice
- Speculate on, and develop, effective methods of communicating ethics

Assessment

Students are assessed through a combination of individual and group written course work, and projects and the Masters dissertation. Emphasis is placed on rigorous academic standards as well as acquiring and developing a range of transferable industry skills and individual development. Assessment exercises can therefore include making effective visual and oral presentations, writing reports and as well as team and group work.

You can study the programme over either nine months or 12 months.

The 9-month programme;

comprises 12 taught modules, seven of which are compulsory modules, and five of which are selected from optional modules.

If you are involved in any aspect of defence acquisition, then this course is relevant to you. Whether you are involved in establishing or managing capability requirements; engaged in procurement, commercial or contracting activities; or developing and implementing support solutions, this course will provide the underpinning knowledge and develop the critical thinking skills required for effective management of defence acquisition. This course offers three pathways - General Acquisition, Through Life Support and Commercial. The MSc programme also provides recognition by a number of professional bodies including the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply (CIPS), as this is a CIPS-accredited course, accreditation by the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT), and, eligibility for a Chartered Management Institute Diploma.

Overview

To be successful in the defence acquisition community requires a clear understanding of the fundamental issues that impact on the establishment of sound commercial relationships; the development of integrated acquisition solutions and the delivery of operational excellence. We aim to develop the ‘T’ shaped individual, with a broad appreciation of strategic issues, and a greater understanding of defence acquisition. The course provides and develops the skills to critically analyse management theories (acquisition), which can be applied to modern, increasingly commercialised, national and international defence acquisition management, in order to enhance the quality of decision making. Most of us take these technologies for granted. However, for the Web to function as it does numerous problems had to be solved: which pages should surface given your search query? Which status updates will you enjoy most? Or, how do we make sure you find the products that you where looking for?
These questions are solved using a combination of machine learning, and an understanding of users. As our use of the Web steadily grows, new questions are continuously emerging. Smarter and faster solutions to empower an intelligent Web are needed. In the Master’s specialisation in Web and Language Interaction you’ll learn the building blocks you’ll need to answer resolve future problems that arise on the Web. In this you’ll learn to understand the psychological, technical and statistical aspect of data science and other Web issues.
The key course in this specialisation is the new AI at the Webscale course, in which AI techniques are studied in the context of streaming and massive data. This course is complemented by the App-Lab course, aimed at understanding how Apps are set-up, built and evaluated. Our approach to this field

Language Information and Communication Technology lies at the basis of innumerable innovations in our society and has provided remarkable new services (like social media) and new products (like smart phones and tablets). Traditionally, applications of Artificial Intelligence used to be limited to micro worlds and toy systems. The horizon has now been widely extended to distribute mass applications of AI techniques. These developments are supported by a general availability of computation power and connectivity in the form of the web, social media, big data, wireless, and mobile platforms with input and output in many modalities.

Human-human and human-computer communication can be found in natural language applications like in the speech driven free-text systems such as Watson, and Siri, in brand sentiment detection and epidemic monitoring from tweets. But communication is also crucial for web applications and Apps that personalise information and make it accessible with other means. Examples thereof are voter guides, recommendation systems, click stream analysis, crowd sourcing and demand aggregation, e-therapy, e-inclusion, avatars with speech synthesis and recognition, gesture and emotion. Technical issues are e.g. map/ reduce architecture for massive data processing and emerging technologies like the semantic web.

Career prospects

Our Artificial Intelligence graduates have excellent job prospects and are often offered a job before they have actually graduated. Many of our graduates go on to do a PhD either at a major research institute or university with an AI department. Other graduates work for companies interested in cognitive design and research. ECTS Educational System

Though at first glance, this may sound easy, it is of course a challenging task. Furthermore, it is not enough just to be a good planner, it is also important to understand how various business processes must be in place in order to support a well functioning supply chain.

The programme provides you with an in-depth knowledge about

- Methods for planning and controlling flows of goods and information in a supply chain. This includes a solid understanding of how to develop the necessary IT based tools.

Prerequisite courses
In the first semester you follow the prerequisite courses that form the methodological and academic basis for the further study programme.

In Research Methods in Logistics you are introduced to the research traditions in the field of logistics, in particular how Operations Research can and should be used.

In Advanced Excel you will get beyond basic Excel knowledge as you will also be introduced to simulation by use of Crystal Ball and to Visual Basic programming.

In Simulation: Modelling and Analysis you will be acquainted with the discrete event simulation methodology and how this can be applied for solving logistical problems.

In Optimisation Methods you acquire basic knowledge about how to model and solve optimisation problems.

In Production Planning and Control you get knowledge about the methodologies that are the foundation of the production planning modules in any ERP system.

Supply Chain Management: Strategy and Design will focus on high-level supply chain strategies and concepts but also provide you with an understanding of the role quantitative models play for doing a supply chain analysis.

Specialisation courses
In the second semester you follow the specialisation courses of the programme.

In Demand Management the students learn tools for forecasting and learn to understand the relationship between forecasts and planning within the company.

In Global Sourcing Strategic focus is on business relations between buyers and sellers on the industrial market. The students will learn to analyse this relationship and to develop well-founded possible solutions for complex problems within the subject area.

In Inventory Control the students get a solid understanding of issues about allocation and dimensioning of inventories in a supply chain.

Distribution and Transportation will be focused on how to solve practical logistical problems within the fields of transportation and Distribution Planning.

Supply Chain Performance Management deals with how decision making units in a supply chain can track their strategic focus while controlling that operations are lean and agile. Essential elements are the roles of key performance indicators (KPIs) and score card tools , as well as the links to issues in management accounting and financial performance measurement.

In Project Management with Accounting Perspectives the student will learn about the qualitative as well as the quantitative issues regarding the management of projects.

In the third semester you can choose elective courses within your areas of interest. The courses can either be taken at Aarhus BSS during the semester, at the AU Summer University or at one of our more than 200 partner universities abroad. You can also participate in internship programmes either in Denmark or abroad.

The fourth semester is devoted to the final thesis. You may choose the topic of the thesis freely and in this way get a chance to concentrate on and specialise in a specific field of interest. The thesis may be written in collaboration with another student or it may be the result of your individual effort. When the thesis has been submitted, it is defended before the academic advisor as well as an external examiner.

Marketing executives help develop marketing campaigns to promote a product, service or idea. The work can be exceptionally varied – from sourcing and placing adverts, to producing marketing materials such as leaflets and e-newsletters, to organising events.

Excellent writing and confident presentation skills are essential to work in marketing. Good people skills are also a must as networking is particularly important. So is having a creative and adaptive mind.

A traditional career path leads from marketing executive to senior marketing executive, then to marketing manager, and finally to marketing director. However the marketing industry is very broad, with many companies in all different sectors requiring varying degrees of marketing expertise, so options for progression vary considerably.

Salaries for marketing executives in the early stages of their careers generally range from £20,000-£30,000, while marketing professionals with a wealth of experience can earn up to £50,000. (All About Careers)

Many of our alumni work for advertising, brand, and market research agencies. Equally our graduates are successful in client-based companies such as manufacturers and banks.

Teaching and learning

The course offers a highly qualified teaching team of strong, research-active marketing communications academics who have published widely in books, journals and reviews. The team has broad industry experience in marketing communications as consultants, senior managers and agency directors.

Student engagement with industry-led research, practitioner shadowing and career opportunities feature as does access to the growing LSBU Marketing alumni network that actively participates in career and marketing events and regularly provides job opportunities.

Student on this course have the added advantage of having access to the substantial international marketing communications and consumer behaviour research undertaken by the Ehrenberg Centre for Research in Marketing, based at London South Bank University. Members of the Centre, as well as visiting researchers from the Ehrenberg-Bass Institute in Adelaide will continue to disseminate new findings to students.
