Project Management Systems

You will develop a thorough understanding of the process of project management, together with the diverse range of resources and activities that the project manager must plan, co-ordinate and control to achieve a successful project. The Module establishes the framework for the management of projects through a comprehensive understanding of the role and functions of project management throughout the project life-cycle from inception through all its stages to completion and use.

Project Management Context

This module will give you a sound understanding of the context for project management and how projects relate to organisations and the larger organisational environment. You will explore contemporary project management by looking at examples from a wide range of organisations and industries.

Project Management Techniques

You will develop a systematic understanding of a number of key tools and techniques used in the management of projects, enabling you to critically evaluate project needs and to select and apply appropriate techniques for your project. With the demand for continuous improvement, production systems such as lean and agile will be explored as well as other performance improvement tools and techniques, including risk and risk management, to identify and manage risk throughout the project life cycle.

Cost and Financial Management

You will gain an in-depth understanding of the financial, commercial and cost aspects of projects and project management. You’ll explore the business and commercial environment in which projects exist, and critically evaluate the factors that influence the strategic and financial rationale for projects. You will learn how the business case for projects is developed, established and evaluated, together with the processes involved, supported by an understanding of financial and accounting protocols and practices.

Project Planning and Control

You’ll develop a systematic understanding of the principles, practices and systems used to plan and control projects. You’ll develop a critical insight into integrated planning and programming software and information systems and the potential of Project Management Information Systems [PMIS] to provide effective management of all aspects of a project, especially resources, time and cost.

Research Design and Methods

This module is designed to equip you with an in-depth understanding of the theories and methods of research and research design. You’ll develop a theoretical and practical foundation from which to develop your Masters Level Major Project/Dissertation.

Major Project/Dissertation

This Module provides the opportunity for you to undertake a significant piece of independent research using appropriate, recognised methods. You will identify and pursue a topic relevant to project management that is of interest and in which you wish to develop a significant level of expertise. You’ll develop and refine the theme for the project together with your course tutor, who will support you during the research and writing process. Competency in project management has become a key part of the skills-set of every construction professional and executive, with many construction project managers functioning in a strategic and co-ordinating role in the delivery of the client’s physical development and investment programme.

Society continues to value and shape the built environment resulting in both public and private investment in construction assets and the successful completion of construction projects. As these projects become more socially and technically complex in a changing world dominated by a concern for sustainability, there has been a growing challenge to develop existing and new skills and expertise in construction project management. This challenge is not only national but global as the need for construction project management skills continues to grow internationally. Indeed, our student cohorts reflect this global challenge with students from across multiple continents.

We have been running programmes in MSc Construction Project Management for nearly 20 years. This arose from the need to extend the managerial remit to those activities that fall outside the construction phase to include areas such as financing, design and hand-over. The programme is therefore tailored for construction professionals looking for a more holistic perspective of construction project processes and the challenge of project management in complex building and infrastructure projects.

Accreditation of the programme is provided by the UK’s Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), the Engineering Council and The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB).

- ICT for Construction Projects
This module introduces managers to a wide range of tools and technologies appropriate for their role and projects. The module covers a range of topics including project information flows, e-business, database technologies, emerging technologies, building information modelling technologies, groupware and collaborative systems.

- Research and Communication
The aims of this module are to provide the student with an overview of sources of information in construction; to explain to students how to conduct a literature review and introduce students to the principal methods of investigation in construction research; and provide an opportunity for each student to develop professional and academic skills in oral and written communication.

- Principles of Design and Construction
This module teaches students the fundamental principles of managing a project during the design and construction phases. The module develops knowledge and understanding of the role and principles of the estimating, tendering and planning of construction projects and the importance of health and safety in relation to design and construction activities.

- Principles of Project Management
Students will gain an understanding of construction project management principles and theory. Specific areas covered include management responsibility for running construction projects; contemporary issues facing the construction industry; cultural complexity and the impact of behaviour and motivation on performance; and applying appropriate project management techniques for the different project phases.

- Design Management
This module introduces various Design Management techniques and approaches. These include process mapping techniques for design; ways to analyse and optimise the design process; and students will gain an understanding of the internal workings of a design office and their relationship with the construction team.

- Sustainability and the Built Environment
Students will gain an understanding of sustainability issues that relate to the built environment; ways in which these issues can be managed and effective communication of both strategic and technical information.

- Management of Construction Processes
This module introduces students to cutting edge contemporary management concepts and innovations; complexities of setting up and managing logistics on large construction sites; and essential project management techniques such as risk management.

- Postgraduate Research Project
The aim of this module is to provide the student with experience of the process and methodology of research by defining and studying (on an individual basis) a complex problem in a specialised area relating to Construction Project Management.

The aim of this module is to introduce students to the fundamental concepts of strategic management and the tools for formulating and implementing strategies within the construction sector. The application of strategic management tools to develop appropriate change strategies will be explored and fundamental skills in communication, negotiation and leadership will be developed.

- People and Teams
Students will gain a knowledge and understanding of the key fundamental management principles and theory (such as motivation, teamwork, leadership, task management) and how they can be applied to managing people within the context of the construction project environment. Students will also be able to analyse current theoretical approaches to people management, appreciate importance of ethics and cultural issues and evaluate the key factors driving HRM systems.

- Procurement and Contract Procedure
This module aims to develop students understanding of procurement methods, different forms of contract and contract practice. The module is designed to give students key practical skills including advising clients on appropriate procurement and tendering methods; selecting the most appropriate form of construction contract; and manage a construction contract effectively.

- Business Economics and Finance
Students will gain a sound understanding of macro, meso and micro economics and types, sources and management of finance relating to construction organisations and projects. This will allow students to analyse the policies and operations of construction organisations and projects from an economic perspective to determine likely performance consequences and analyse corporate financial data for investment prospects and business management decisions.

- Federated 3D Building Information Modelling (BIM)
The creation, deployment and use of aggregated and integrated models are key goals of collaboration through BIM. This module aims to deliver hands-on practical skills on the use of BIM technologies (i.e. design software and collaboration tools) for real-time co-creation and data sharing of federated/aggregated 3D BIM models. The concept of shared situational awareness within design teams/processes will be explored.

Careers and further study

Previous students have gone on to work for a variety of organisations nationally and internationally. These include Arup, Atkins, BAM Nuttall Ltd, Balfour Beatty, Kier Group, Morgan Sindall, Skanska and Transport for London. Many of these organisations engage with the University in both collaborative research and in delivering lectures on the courses. This provides an ideal opportunity for students to engage in discussions about employment opportunities.

Scholarships and bursaries

The University offers over 100 scholarships each year to new self-financing full-time international students who are permanently resident in a county outside the European Union. These Scholarships are to the value of 25% of the programme tuition fee and that value will be credited to the student’s tuition fee account.

Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) is embedded throughout the course with tools such as the ‘Blackboard’ eLearning Portal and electronic reading lists that will guide your preparation for seminars and independent research. Our use of lecture capture software will help you revise challenging material. You’ll have access to industry-standard software such as Microsoft Project, Asta Powerproject, IBM SPSS and NVivo.

Our library, which was ranked #2 in the UK in the Times Higher Education Student Experience Survey for 2015, has excellent digital resources with over 100 databases for independent learning as well as half a million electronic books and another 500,000 print books.

According to the PMI, project management is one of the fastest growing professions worldwide and the need for project management professionals is growing on every continent. The complex challenges faced in modern engineering have created a growing need for highly motivated graduates who understand project infrastructure planning, construction, management and maintenance issues.

This MSc course equips you with the knowledge, creativity and transferable skills required by project managers in the industry – developing your independent learning abilities and providing a foundation for your ongoing professional development.

You will learn current theories and practices for managing contemporary engineering projects from inception to completion – and for maintaining the resulting infrastructure throughout its lifetime.

Aims

Engineering is at the core of a successful economy and the infrastructure it develops directly affects the wellbeing of its citizens and the environment. Skilled, qualified project managers have a key role in this vital work.

There are two main challenges facing the engineering and construction industry:

1. Clients are increasingly requiring contractors to deliver projects using limited resources, at low cost, in short duration and to a high level of quality and safety
2. Much existing infrastructure is under severe strain due to a legacy of inadequate maintenance and rapid population growth.

The course examines these commercial pressures and will provide opportunities for students to develop and demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:

- The principles of strategic planning and risk analysis in successful project and infrastructure management
- The theoretical basis for the organisation of project infrastructure development and how management of budgets, human resources and supply chains can affect overall project success
- The interplay between engineering project, infrastructure management and sustainability in the complex real-world situations.

The programme develops students' technical knowledge and transferable skills sought by employers, equipping them with the compulsory attributes to flourish in senior roles within the engineering and construction sector.

Course Content

The taught element of the course includes eight modules which approximates to 150 learning hours. For full-time mode of study, the programme is taken over 12 months. The eight modules will be taught over the first eight months (from October to May) and during the final four months (June to September), students will undertake a project dissertation.

The individual project gives you the opportunity to undertake original research in the field of engineering project and infrastructure management. The preparatory work for the project is undertaken together with the taught modules over the first two semesters, under a research methods module, whilst the summer period is being devoted to the actual project dissertation.

Teaching

Formal lectures are used to deliver course materials and are supported by structured seminars and problem solving sessions to develop your knowledge and cognitive skills. The lectures give a broad overview of the main concepts and principles you need to understand, providing you with a framework on which to build and expand your knowledge on through private studies.

The application of theory and strengthening of knowledge of taught material is achieved through computing sessions, field trips and group projects. The latter is aimed particularly at enhancing your teamwork skills.

Our well resourced computing laboratories allow you to develop your knowledge and experience of appropriate planning and management software packages - and to apply this to project and infrastructure management problems. You also have access to computers outside scheduled laboratory sessions to allow you to learn at your own pace and time.

Learning from real-world examples forms a significant part of the course. You will visit project sites to understand the challenges and solutions of modern engineering projects.

Our staff are active in research and maintain close contact with industry to ensure that course materials are up-to date with commercial needs. We also invite leading industry figures to the University as guest speakers.

You will also be allocated a personal tutor who will be available to provide academic and pastoral support during the whole duration of your course.

Assessment

Each of the taught modules is assessed either by formal examination, an assignment, or a balanced combination of the two. Methods of assessing assignments include essay, individual/group report, oral presentation and short test.

Information on assignments in terms of the aims, learning outcomes, assessment criteria and submissions requirements are clearly specified at the beginning of the academic year. Detailed feedback on assignment is provided to students to assist them in achieving the required learning outcomes.

This MSc programme has been specially designed to develop graduates and practising engineers and position them at the forefront of managing and leading these developments.

The course explores very current, 21st century issues around risk management, planning and programming, cost control, people and information management, contract/procurement management and sustainability. We receive input for the course from industrial partners and students get to understand project management at work through site visits.

Modules on project finance, risk, procurement and contract management, supply chain strategy, will underpin modules focusing on sustainable project, infrastructure and environmental management.

Internship

This option offers the opportunity to spend three months working full-time in one of the many companies/industries with which we have close links. You may be able to extend this over more than one semester in cases where it is adjacent to a vacation period. If you take this option, you will be assigned to our Library and Information Management Research Group. There is every possibility that you may contribute to published research and therefore you may be named as part of the research team, which would be a great start to a research career.

Study Abroad

We have exchange agreements with universities all over the world, including partners in Europe, Asia, the Americas and Oceania. If you take the Study Abroad option you will spend a semester at one of these partners, continuing your studies in English but in a new cultural and learning environment. Learning, Teaching & Assessment

The course begins with a Professional Development Audit (PDA), where we help students evaluate what they have done previously and what they need to add to gain the MSc and qualify for CEng. Based on the PDA, the student and Aston University set up an individual Learning Agreement which specifies the areas of study to be undertaken and how that study will be carried out, through suitable combinations of workplace projects and distance learning, and assessed – mainly through reports on the workplace projects. The student then works through the agreed study and assessment, with support from Aston University staff and a workplace mentor, gradually building over an agreed period to completion and award of the MSc.

The information listed in the section entitled ‘What you will study’ is an overview of the academic content of the programme that will take the form of either core or option modules. Modules are designated as core or option in accordance with professional body requirements and internal Academic Framework review, so may be subject to change. Students will be required to undertake modules that the University designates as core and will have a choice of designated option modules. Additionally, option modules may be offered subject to meeting minimum student numbers.

Academic Framework reviews are conducted by LJMU from time to time to ensure that academic standards continue to be maintained. A review is currently in progress and will be operational for the academic year 2016/2017. Final details of this programme’s designated core and option modules will be made available on LJMU’s website as soon as possible and prior to formal enrolment for the academic year 2016/2017.

Teaching & assessment

Over the 12 months of this course, you’ll take ten taught course units, attend various seminars and workshops and complete a final project or dissertation. Each term is made up of five taught course units. The dissertation of 15,000 words will be on a project management topic.

Energy

Energy forms a critical component of our daily lives and its demand is set to grow by 35% by 2035. It is an industry that will continue to grow and evolve in the foreseeable future.A career in energy will involve tackling important issues such as climate change and improving sustainability as well as developing new sources of fuel.

Energy modules include:

Energy Audit and Energy Asset Management

This module focuses on techniques for auditing and managing the amount of energy used in a range of industrial processes. The module will provide an understanding of the strategies and procedures of energy audit and energy asset management. Using case studies throughout, the module will present energy audit, managing energy usage, factors affecting energy efficiency on plant, and cost benefit analysis of introducing alternative strategies and technologies. It will also address the efficient use of other commodities, for example water consumption.

Renewable Energy Technologies

Renewable energy is regarded as an integral part of a sustainable development strategy. This module concentrates on the renewable energy technologies most likely to succeed in the UK and other temperate countries, i.e. solar energy, energy from waste, wind, hydro and biomass. Topics for discussion include: the scale and variability of resources; technologies for exploitation; technical and economic feasibilities; integrated (hybrid) systems. Software tools will be explored for design and analysis of renewable energy systems.

Construction Management  

Developed with the support of the CITB Construction Industry Training Board, the programme is designed to meet the increasing demand for innovative and far-sighted construction managers.

It offers a choice of modules covering the wide variety of skills that modern construction professionals need. This comes from a growing drive to find sustainable and environmentally sound construction methods and innovative management practices to replace traditional procurement routes and management methods.

The programme covers the skills that modern construction professionals need in order to meet the challenges of the industry. It provides recent graduates and experienced professionals with an outstanding opportunity to upgrade their skills in order to enhance their career choices.

Strategic Management in Construction and Property Enterprise

The module develops insight into the strategic decision-making processes necessary for organisations to establish and meet organisational goals. It also examines the types of strategies and how they may be successfully utilised. Contemporary analytical techniques are reviewed and evaluated. Factors which influence Corporate Strategy are considered and contextualised in relation to the construction and property industry and constituent enterprises.

Oil and Gas 

The oil and gas industries are widely affected by a growing range of factors, including shifting global economics, an evolving global energy mix and environmental issues. There is an increasing demand for those working in the industries to develop an intelligent awareness of this complex business environment and to grasp the ways in which these changes will affect organisations.

The professional project manager must deliver projects on schedule, on budget, to scope and with the right quality. This MSc develops the multi-faceted skill set needed to successfully manage international projects in the oil and gas industry.

The Oil and Gas Industry

This module introduces the student to the fundamental principles and activities within the global oil and gas industry. This includes legal ownership of hydrocarbon reserves, strategic investments, and the processes involved in upstream and downstream activities within the oil and gas industry. Oil and Gas Contracts and Disputes

This module will provide the student with an understanding of procurement and contract administration in a modern international oil & gas environment based on the main contracts. The module will examine the various methods of resolving disputes arising under contracts at law, through statutory legislation and by agreement: Litigation; Arbitration; Adjudication; ADR including Conciliation, Mediation, Negotiation, Comparison of cross border/international methods of dispute resolution particularly in relation to arbitration and adjudication.

Engineering projects are becoming increasingly complex, being undertaken by multi-disciplinary teams who collaborate to achieve project goals and so often require dedicated and qualified project managers. Project management has become the strategic focus of all successful organisations, and project management skills are considered a valuable attribute by employers.

The course will cover all aspects of engineering project management and is therefore suitable for engineering graduates wishing to develop a career in project management and non-engineers who are expected to manage projects in technology or engineering-related sectors. Individual modules can also be taken by practitioners as part of their CPD.

Block delivery

This course is taught in in block delivery, so you are able to work around existing work commitments. Each module is delivered over a three week period through lectures, tutorials and practical workshops.

Timetable

The taught modules are delivered in three-week blocks. Each module is typically 200 hours of study time. To complete the course in one year you must take four modules each semester.

If you wish to pursue a Master's qualification as part of your CPD you can take up to five years to complete the course.

Engineering graduates wishing to go into project management or as an add-on to their BEng studies;

Who is it for?

This postgraduate Project Management, Finance and Risk programme is for those pursuing or planning a career in managing the introduction of capital goods or applying the latest project management techniques to complex projects. It is particularly suited to students with a scientific or financial engineering background as we cover quantitative risk assessment in depth, which requires an aptitude for measuring and analysing data.

Objectives

Consider the risks contained within a project such as the Euro Tunnel. Two governments sponsoring the project and nine billion pounds of finance ring-fenced through a special purpose company to complete it. Will it be finished on time and will it secure the revenues to service the debt? These are the kinds of questions we address on this programme.

MSc Project Management, Finance and Risk gives you a foundation in quantitative risk assessment and decision-making under uncertain conditions, coupled with classical engineering economics and financial engineering.

From analysing indecision within games theory to rebuilding a country’s infrastructure, we explore the drivers in which businesses operate, and the challenges and opportunities that project managers face. Teaching is provided  by internal and external lecturers with expertise in the field. This is complemented by invited lectures from the Sir John Cass Business School, together with people from industry and the banking sector who bring in diverse skill sets and the ability to solve complex problems.

Placements

There is no formal requirement to do an industry-based placement as part of the programme. However, some students arrange to undertake their final project within a company.

Teaching and learning

As well as lectures, you learn through tutorial support, guided private study, coordinating group activities, and coursework. Not every module has an exam and in some cases you will be assessed through a module project.

Full-time students complete the programme in one year and we expect you to devote a significant part of the non-taught hours to project work, group activities, as well as your own independent study. The duration of a part-time programme is two years (this may be extended to three years in individual cases.

Modules

There are four core modules and two electives. Out of the two electives you can choose from four or five topics including games theory, perspectives on management and leadership and entrepreneurship, innovations and enterprise.

You can also take part in a rolling programme of one-day events to build your communication and team-building skills while you study. These sessions cover topics including conducting research, improving your presentation skills and dealing with people.

The course is modular and each module lasts four days. The structure has been designed in this way so that both full and part-time students can follow the programme. In addition, the course offers practical skills in management, leadership, entrepreneurship, software and communications tools.

You are normally required to complete all the taught modules successfully before progressing to the dissertation.

A Prince 2 Project Management Practitioner’s Course will be offered to students in the summer term. This five-day course, paid for by the institution, is presented by an outside training agency. By successfully completing the course you will be awarded a coveted practitioner’s certificate.
