Course Details

The first part of the MSW program is professional foundation content. Students typically complete their foundation coursework during the first semester (advanced standing) or first year (60-credit-hour) of enrollment. Typically, students enroll in advanced courses, including electives and course related to the student’s chosen concentration, only after they have completed their professional foundation courses.

Students may also enroll in the MSW program on a part-time basis. Part-time students typically complete the program in four years.

The School offers field education placements throughout the state of Alabama and occasionally in neighboring states. MSW students may also apply to complete their advanced field education placement (SW 595) in Washington, DC.

Course content and structure

The MSc in Social Work is a two-year course that runs over two academic years, and is based at Royal Holloway’s Egham campus. The course is full time and students are expected to attend from 9am - 5pm, both in College and while on placement. The course integrates theory, research, policy and practice in social work, and the academic and practice programmes run concurrently.

- Course structure and organisation
In the first year you'll attend College four days a week during the first term. In the second term you are on placement (70 days) from Monday to Thursday and in College on Fridays. The placement continues in the third term. There are occasional block weeks on placement and Recall Days when you need to attend College.

In year two you'll attend College on Mondays and Tuesdays and are on placement (100 days) the rest of the time. Again there are occasional block weeks on placement and Recall Days when you need to attend College. Course Aims

The course prepares you at postgraduate level for employment as a professionally qualified social worker and lays the foundation for your continuing professional development. It also provides an academically rigorous education at Masters Level, focusing on critical, research and evaluative skills. In order to qualify, you will be assessed through assessed practice and relevant academic study. After qualification you are eligible to apply for registration to the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). For this process all social work students (undergraduate and postgraduate) must be able to demonstrate knowledge, understanding, critical evaluation and practice application of the following:
- Principles, values and ethics, theories, models and methods;

- Legislation and policy/social work services and service users;

- Organisational/service delivery context;

- Practice.

Course Content

This professional qualifying programme continues for two full calendar years (24 months) full-time, starting in September. Teaching methods include seminars, lectures, workshops and skills workshops employing a range of methods. All parts of the course are compulsory. The programme incorporates the following elements:

- 300 Masters Level credits, of which 60 credits are awarded on the basis of a dissertation and 240 credits through taught modules – these are to be passed at Masters Level, with a pass mark of 50%, for the award of MA;

- Assessment in line with the Professional Capabilities Framework for Social Work comprising practice learning of 170 days and practice associated assignments which are to be passed at Masters level;

- The core curriculum content as specified by the College of Social Work;

- Compliance with QAA benchmark statement for social work.

In Year One of the course you must demonstrate your suitability for professional training in order to progress to the next stage of the award. You’ll study

You'll undertake a range of taught modules, a dissertation and assessed placements in a range of social work service settings.

Teaching staff

The School of Social Policy and Social Work has a long and rich tradition of education, research and consultancy in social work. The Centre for Excellence for Looked After Children in Scotland (a multi-million pound development funded by the Scottish Government to support research and training in residential child care), the Centre for the Child and Society, and Community Care Works are all based within the School and contribute to teaching in the course as well as to research and consultancy.

Relevant work experience

We normally expect you to have had at least six months full-time work experience, or its equivalent in part-time work, at the point of the application.

We’re more concerned with the quality of experience than whether or not it’s paid. It’s useful to think about experience in three dimensions - duration, range and depth. While longer and more diverse experience is of great value, depth (or quality) is perhaps more important since this is what allows learning and professional development. Often experience is "deeper" in contexts where supervision is offered regularly, allowing for in-depth discussion in practice issues and dilemmas. Undertaking relevant reading and training while working often helps people to "deepen" the quality of their work experience.

- Criteria for work experience
The following indicate the kinds of criteria we look at in considering the relevance and suitability of your work experience:
- does it involve direct contact with people either as service users e.g. individuals, families or groups where the focus is on helping them live with or manage major difficulties in their lives, or in stimulating collaborative ventures to seek social change?

All entrants must register with the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) and meet suitability criteria regarding offending history, employment record etc.

Overseas students

As with home students, overseas applicants should be able to demonstrate their motivation, aptitude and preparedness for social work training. You must have substantial relevant paid or voluntary work experience. In addition, you must have a recognised degree or an equivalent qualification.

Application for entry to the course must be made through UCAS. The subsequent selection process is broadly the same as for UK and EC applicants. However, in order to ensure that applications from out-with the UK are given full consideration it is advisable that in addition to applying to UCAS you should send additional information directly to us. This should include:

- where English is a second language please provide information about your levels of proficiency in English

The teaching and learning approach is student-centred and aims to promote reflective learning. Our key approach is problem-based learning which is universally recognised as an effective way of developing the critical thinking and problem-solving skills needed by busy professionals.

On completion of the course graduates will have:
- Developed their ability to critically evaluate theory and utilise research findings in relation to advanced practice and leadership.

- Enhanced their skills and ability to provide ethically-sound and effective practice and leadership within an anti-oppressive practice framework.

- Undertake independent, critical analysis and thinking, and enhanced professional development through reflective learning and practitioner-led research.

Assessment

A range of assessment methods are used and they include essays, case study analysis, oral presentations, direct observation and use of video material, reflective commentaries , practice evidence, and for the Masters award a 15,000 word dissertation.

Employability & career opportunities

A postgraduate learning experience of this kind will assist students in thinking more deeply and critically about their work and setting and about the roles they take within it. This programme will provide knowledge and skills that are transferable to a wide variety of employment opportunities in advanced practice, leadership and management in social care and health services.

This course also provides a firm foundation for further postgraduate study and research,

The Department of Social Work runs in collaboration with St Georges and Kingston University, a Doctorate in Professional Studies (Health and Social Care Practice) which students who wish to pursue further study could participate in. In addition The Department offers the standard PhD option.

The Department of Counselor Education offers a Master of Science degree program in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. The program meets the educational requirements for counselor licensure in all fifty states, as well as the Federal government requirements to work with veterans and individuals receiving Medicare or Medicaid. Completion of this program will also qualify graduates to immediately sit for the National Certified Counselor (NCC) examination. The clinical mental health program will effectively prepare graduates for a broad range of career possibilities, including working in community settings, hospitals, educational institutions, VA treatment centers, and private practice settings.

In preparation for employment, WCU's programs offer a vast number of field placement sites with experienced supervisors as well as professional field experience coordinators who offer assistance in securing the best placement options available.

Our faculty are counselling professionals with real-world experience bringing their teaching to life. Many have authored the textbooks used in our courses. Additionally, each candidate in the program has a full time faculty member advisor to help make the most of their graduate experience.

The Clinical Mental Health Counseling program prepares students to be effective mental health counselors and provides the educational requirements for counselor licensure, while earning an M.S. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. The 60-credit hour program consists of:

• core counseling courses,
• clinical mental health specialty courses and
• 700 hours of field work.

The comprehensive program results in a strong foundation for serving the mental health needs of the community.

Curriculum

The M.S. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling is a Full-Time Program which consists of four specific curricular elements: the 27 credit Common Core (6 credits of which will be provided by the Department of Professional and Secondary Education), 15 credits of CMHC specialty coursework, nine credits of elective coursework (that can be taken within the department or in other departments), and nine credits of field experience coursework. Each student is required to pass a comprehensive exam that requires the student to take the knowledge gained through coursework and apply it to a real world case scenario.

Accreditation

The Clinical Mental Health Counselling program is not yet CACREP-accredited, as it was recently launched and cannot be accredited until a first cohort of students are prepared for graduation. However, the Department of Counsellor Education is currently preparing application for accreditation of the Clinical Mental Health Counselling program and will seek accreditation as soon as possible. All of our master's programs satisfy the core educational requirements for licensure as a Licensed Professional Counsellor (LPC) in Pennsylvania and most other states.
