The full-time Master program International Health & Social Management comprises 4 semesters of 15 weeks each and starts every winter semester. Graduates of the program are conferred the academic degree “Master of Arts in Business”. Lectures are held in English. Attendance is generally mandatory for all lectures. Students have the option to spend the 3rd semester or earn a double degree at a partner university abroad; the lectures attended there will be counted towards the required credit units. The Master program has been accredited by both the European Health Management Association EHMA and the Foundation for International Business Administration Accreditation FIBAA.

Speakers on the module include experts in psycho-social management of diabetes, child development including special needs, child education and communication, child advocacy and mental health in diabetes.

The course is taught at The University of Warwick and consists of pre-course work, four days attendance and assessment.

Course details

This programme addresses management in the construction industry in its widest sense. The purpose is to provide advanced training to graduates aspiring to higher or middle management positions in the civil engineering and building industries. It addresses the working of those organisations, as well as disciplines and techniques of practical use in the management and implementation of all stages of construction and civil engineering projects. This opens up a wide range of career opportunities, as many of the techniques are applicable both within and outside the construction industry. 

The programme includes lectures, tutorials, workshops, industrial seminars, site visits and an individual project.

Semester one modules are taken by all students to develop a firm base of general knowledge and techniques for further specialised management study. Delivered by leading academics in Birmingham Business School (BBS), the management content is research led, drawing on the expertise and reputation of BBS to help deliver a high quality experience for students. Topics include strategy, innovation, marketing, organisational behaviour and financial management. 

Semester two sees students move into a pathway of their choice, where the key management concepts tackled in the first semester will be complemented by the exploration of practical management applications by academics from the School of Engineering, drawing upon its wealth of research experience and industrial links. 

This new structure will allow us to present the core principles in semester one and then to demonstrate their application in semester two before you progress into the summer and the opportunity to investigate and develop a contemporary Engineering Management topic via a 60 credit research project.

Study part-time

The Advanced Engineering Management Programmes can be studied on a part-time basis over the duration of up to five years. Modules will be studied over a two-week period, therefore you can undertake one module per term or complete more if you would like to finish the course sooner. Module dates and times are yet to be confirmed, but if you have any queries about studying part-time you can contact .

Learning and teachment

Construction Management provides a ground in the main disciplines and techniques and to develop personal skills of practical use in the management and implementation of construction and civil engineering projects.

The programme addresses the management of technical (engineering) techniques, the development of personal, interpersonal and project management skills, and provides a fundamental understanding of the social, economic, resource management and legal frameworks within which the construction project takes place. Generally, The purpose of the course is to prepare the student to make an effective contribution to the project management of the whole enterprise and environment in which she/he will work.

The content of the programme takes into account the dominant position of the engineer at every stage in the development of a civil engineering project. Since the engineer is normally chosen to fill a position with responsibility for technical, financial and contractual decisions and for the overall management and administration of a project, the programme is directed to satisfying these needs.

To the elegant old house of 1908, that houses staff rooms and social space, a new multi-million pound state of-the-art teaching and learning complex has been added giving a unique combination of historic elegance and cutting-edge facilities.

The programme examines advanced knowledge about the theory and practice of social work and community development in an international context. You will be encouraged to develop a critical understanding of global social issues (such as social exclusion, poverty, environmental degradation, and disasters) and relate this knowledge to developments in their own country. You will be equipped with the skills to engage in research and to apply research findings effectively in practice. The programme includes a two-week field-based learning opportunity in a social work or community work agency. The dissertation provides space for you to carry out research on an aspect of social or community work in the UK. 

Durham University is a world leader in international social work and community development research, theory, and practice. Our social work team has edited the prestigious International Social Work journal and works closely with social work’s key international organisations - , the International Association of Schools of Social Work, .the International Federation of Social Workers (IFSW), and the International Council of Social Welfare (ICSW). Its Programme Director also represents social work at the UNFCCC and other UN bodies.

Work Placements

MSc Management with 14 weeks Work Placement (Optional)
The MSc Management (with Professional Practice) incorporates a compulsory work placement component of 14 weeks which allows students to take their learning outside the classroom and pairs them with companies in the UK.

Brunel Business School is amongst the first few Business Schools in the UK to introduce postgraduate placements for students completing their Masters programmes as far back as 2011. This feature, pioneered in the UK for undergraduate students by Brunel University, is becoming more popular amongst more mature students, for whom such a placement can often serve as a springboard to often extremely competitive labour market. Postgraduate work placement employers cover all related expenses with many also providing a salary.

At Brunel we provide many opportunities and experiences within your degree programme and beyond – work-based learning, professional support services, volunteering, mentoring, sports, arts, clubs, societies, and much, much more – and we encourage you to make the most of them, so that you can make the most of yourself.

Teaching

As an active research university, international level research findings by Brunel Business School tutors are regularly used in lectures. Tutors on this programme are leaders in the field of management and active researchers within one of the six centres of research within the school.

Modes of Study

1-year full-time in September: The taught element of the course (September to April) includes eight modules; delivery will be by a combination of lectures, seminars and tutorials/group work. A further four months (May to September) is spent undertaking the dissertation.

1-year full-time in January: The taught element of the programme includes 8 modules which are delivered in two terms (four in January to April, and four in September to December); delivery will be by a combination of lectures, seminars and tutorials/group work. The dissertation is undertaken May to August, and then can be completed January to March after the second teaching term.

Assessment

Modules are typically assessed by individual assessment and an examination in May.

Teaching methods include lectures and informal small study groups.

Coursework and examination assignments place considerable stress on the ability to think and reason critically, but constructively.

The dissertation (12,000 words) is the capstone demonstration of these various skills, requiring students to conceive, justify, design in detail and execute a major project.

Assessment may include some numerical analysis tasks as well as reporting on published financial data.

Tasks related to the gathering of published data or field investigation to new data.

Individual and/or group presentations using laptops, PCs and digital projectors.

PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOPS

In addition to the core courses, students can attend personal and professional development workshops. These workshops cover current topics of interest, recent trends in management and career development. They serve as a complement to the core modules.

COMPANY ANALYSIS AND PROFILE

Students will select a company with international business located in different national culture. The purpose is to evaluate the impact of organization design on human resources roles and responsibilities. The objective is to gather public and internal information to develop their own analysis of the situation.

The program encourages effective teamwork as the major part of modules expects students to work in groups. These groups will consist of students of different nationalities and rhythms, as some students attend courses part-time.

RESEARCH TECHNIQUES AND PROJECT PROPOSAL

A research techniques module has been created to provide the skills required to effectively work on the Final Management Projects and on future professional projects.

FINAL MANAGEMENT PROJECT

The second year of the program is dedicated to the Final Management Project, a written work of approximately 20,000 words, conducted under the supervision of a tutor from GGSB. Students will choose an aspect of International HR Management and are encouraged to link the chosen subject matter to their future career. The project can be completed in parallel with full-time employment or an internship based in France or abroad.

FOREIGN LANGUAGES

Operating in an international environment requires foreign language fluency and therefore a foreign language module is an option on the program for all students.

Non-French speakers may study French (beginner to advanced level). This option is highly advised for those who are looking to become professionals in France. French speakers may choose from a number of other languages at beginner level.

Careers

Graduates of this MSc program will be qualified for posts in both multinational corporations and companies experiencing rapid expansion in international markets.

Graduates may equally enter the consulting field in the areas of HR and organizational development.

Purchasing and Supply Chain Management MSc addresses the strategic role of these two critical functions of organisations. It also examines the impact of changes in the regulatory and policy environment, and the effect of new technologies and techniques on current and future problems within the supply chain. 

During the course, you will develop your knowledge of best practice in purchasing and supply chain management, and enhance your understanding of the importance of business process and activity integration through our range of modules. 

The sectors of purchasing and supply chain are expanding, leaving our Master’s graduates attractive on the job market. Depending on your interests and desired career path, you will have the opportunity to specialise in international law or project management as part of this course.

Internships

All students on our full-time Business Masters courses can apply to undertake the PG/MBA Internship Programme, which forms part of the Reflective Practitioner Module.

The internship allows you to test drive a career and explore one of your career interests before you complete your Postgraduate studies!

Completing an 8-12 week accredited internship helps students gain invaluable work experience. This fantastic work experience can be taken in addition to option modules. Students are responsible for finding their own internship with the support of the Business Experience Team.

To express an interest in the module, students must submit a completed application form and a copy of their updated CV. This will give students membership a dedicated website that offers exclusive access to internship vacancies, one to-one CV guidance appointments, mock interviews, employability workshops and much more.

Students can apply to London-based organisations and have the flexibility to take their internship in the summer period or alongside their studies.

Career path

Past students of the course have developed successful careers in both supply chain management and procurement. Course graduates work in both large and small to medium companies all over the world. Examples include Unilever, Puma, and Sony. In today's complex and demanding environment where sound judgement, personal responsibility and initiative are sought, this course will help you acquire the qualities to either advance in your current role, or gain new employment. Areas of work you could consider include purchasing and contract management, supply chain management, operations/logistics management and supply chain planning and development. 

Alternatively, you might want to continue onto research or further study. On successful completion of the course, if you have three years' relevant work experience you may be awarded Member of Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply (MCIPS) status. Alternatively, you can apply to CIPS for MCIPS status at a later date, once you have acquired the necessary work experience.

Dissertation (Social Research)

Social Research Methods Course Structure

Teaching is in the form of lectures, seminars, group-project work and individual study. All Social Research Methods students are assigned a Personal Tutor and Dissertation Supervisor appropriate to their chosen area of study.

The Social Research Methods course is made up of six 20-credit modules (Part 1) and a 60-credit dissertation (Part 2).

For example, Professor David Hughes has published on the universal coverage healthcare reforms of Thailand and Turkey, Debbie Jones jointly led on The Student Sex Workers' project from Swansea University's Centre for Criminal Justice and Criminology.

The MSc Social Research methods is serviced by research active staff, many of whom are leaders in their field of research. The team has strong links with Criminology whose staff have been awarded Howard league Research Medal 2013 for work on the Swansea Bureau Youth Scheme.
